"Ok Anna. You can do this. It's been too long since you've done this and it's just as important as being able to perform a successful autopsy. It's part of your job and you love your job, so just do it. Besides, what's the worst that could happen?"
Anna couldn't help but snort somewhat at this last statement as she stood in the training grounds of the BPD, strapping on protective equipment and looking down at the gun hanging from her side over and over again. She had already checked it over a dozen times and even though the weapon was in perfect condition, she was still leery of it.
It was ironic in a way. She was perfectly capable of using a gruesome range of utensils on dead flesh and even living if the situation ever called for it. Her stomach was iron and had never once lost its contents even on crime scenes that had sent senior officers running outside to upchuck. She even had a detailed and extensive knowledge on guns, how they worked, and the ways to determine what kind were used in crimes.
And yet she still got nervous around them.
Normally she wouldn't even have come down to the training grounds, let alone to practice with a gun. However, the time had come for her yearly training update and that included knowing how to properly use a firearm. It was BPD regulation that everyone have training in this area in case any of them came under attack during an investigation. And as unlikely as it was that she, a forensic examiner, was going to be attacked, it was still protocol that she be trained in firing a BPD-issued gun.
"Why a gun? Why couldn't it be knives or even a saw? I'm perfectly capable with those, but nooooo! It has to be a gun."
She sighed, knowing that she was being silly and not in the usual way. She knew the reasons behind using a firearm over any other weapon, but it still bothered her. To her mind, a gun was a cheap weapon, something that made killing so easy when it should be the most difficult thing in the world. All you had to do was point and pull and someone could be dead. Also, she kept thinking she would end up shooting her own hand off. Call it a stupid fear, but she couldn't shake it.

Jim and Dimitri walked into the shooting range. Each brother had a duffle bag full of their own guns. Jim exchanged a look with his brother at Anna's voice. "Didn't think she'd be squeamish around guns." Dimitri said to Jim as they came into view.

Anna was running out of reasons to put off taking the gun exam when she heard the doors behind her open and a voice speaking softly enough for the sound to be heard but not the words spoken. She looked up from the weapon in her hands and immediately her blue eyes landed on the Colt brothers. Her look of annoyance disappeared and a smile quickly stole across her features as she called out.
"Hey, if it isn't the dynamic duo themselves! What brings you two into the shooting range on this fine day?"
Dimitri and Jim didn't often come down into the forensic labs and she jumped at the chance to speak with them while also avoiding taking her gun exam.

"Same thing that brings you here, I'm guessing." Jim said with a friendly smile. Even though he and his brother didn't really go to the forensic lab that often he did like Anna. She seemed like a nice enough person.
"Yeah." Dimitri said with a nod and his characteristic flirtatious grin. "Although we tend to use our own guns for the mandatory test. More reliable you know?"

"Yeah, guess that was kinda obvious."
Anna gave a laugh, this one slightly more nervous when Dimitri started talking about the test. She REALLY didn't want to take this test but knew it was impossible to dodge this bullet, bad gun pun aside.
"Seems like everyone has their own personal weapon of choice around here. Sunshine has her frying pan, Shadow has his chaos blasts, Pitch has his shadow weapons. Guess it would only make sense you have your own special guns and all that."
Ok, there was no point in pretending now. She really was just blabbering on and on. She glanced back towards the place where the gun she would be using for the test sat on a side table, silent and seemingly harmless yet a big point of worry for Anna. Why oh why was she so against using a gun?

"Yeah kinda was." Dimitri said with a friendly chuckle, which turned into a grunt of pain when Jim elbowed him in the side, hard. To anyone who didn't know the two brothers, they would think Jim was the elder instead of Dimitri.
"We could help you with yours if you'd like." Jim said noticing her hesitation. While he and his brother where perfectly comfortable using guns, he knew that not everyone was.

"Well......"
Anna looked down at the weapon in question and debated on if she should take Jim's offer or politely refuse it. It was a very short debate before she reached her choice.
"Yeah, that would be super duper helpful. I'm still a little.....uncomfortable around guns."
She gave a smile that was clearly fake.

Dimitri interpreted the smile as a flirtatious one. Before he could say anything though, he received a death glare from his brother and a swift kick in the shin as well. "Bitch."
"Jerk." Was all Jim said to Dimitri. "Ignore him." He said giving a friendly smile to Anna. "It's nothing to be ashamed of. Not everyone was raised around guns like Dimitri and I were."

Anna couldn't help but suck in her lips slightly when the two brothers started to cuss at each other. She had heard plenty of foul language in her line of work but usually refrained from cursing herself. However, she wasn't about to call out someone just for using a naughty word and merely gave a small cough before speaking again.
"Yeah, guns were never really involved in any part of my raising. It must seem silly, me being afraid to fire a gun when I deal with everything else that comes with it. Guess I always just thought I was too clumsy for one and would end up shooting my own fingers off if I tried to use one."
She dropped her gaze at this admission. While it was good to explain her hesitation, she couldn't help but feel slightly embarrassed about it either. A small blush of color spread across her cheeks as she rocked back and forth on her feet in front of her fellow officers.

"Hey each person is different." Jim said. "And it's actually good that you're careful around guns. They aren't toys." That was something their father was very clear on. True Jim and Dimitri had each gotten a gun at a young age, ten years to be exact, but John Colt had been very careful to teach the boys about how to use guns safely and properly before they were given one.
"So which one do you need to take the test on?" Jim asked. "Just so I know how to help you. Because each gun is different."

"I'm supposed to test with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. I have to be competent and comfortable enough to use at least the most basic firearm for the BPD in case blah blah blah."
Anna flapped her hand like a puppet to show how much she cared about the supposed reasons for using the gun. She knew why, she just didn't understand why! Sure, the detectives and cops would need it since they were directly in the line of fire, but she was a medical examiner. She spent most of her time in the labs doing autopsies and running tests alongside Pearl and when she did go to a crime scene, it was after the fact. Yet she was still expected to take the gun exam 'just in case.'

"Well at least it's a simple gun." Jim said. "Simple as they come in fact." He was glad that Anna was only being tested on one type of gun. It could get complicated to try and explain just how each gun worked to someone who wasn't familiar with guns, like Anna.
"Yeah might as well have a water pistol." Dimitri said leaning up against the wall. He gave an inoccent smile in response to the glare Jim shot him.

Anna didn't become upset or annoyed at Dimitri's snide remark about the gun she was training on and actually smiled at the elder brother.
"Actually I have something better."
With that, Anna suddenly reached down into the top of the boots she was wearing, producing a long and balanced knife from the interior where it had been concealed. She casually twirled the knife between her fingers with a grace that seemed to go against her normally clumsy actions.
"Say hello to my little friend. I can defend myself just as well with my sweet little collection of knives as you can with your gun. It's just my bad luck that the BPD still wants everyone trained on basic firearms regardless of other weapon skills."
She said all of this in a perfectly cheerful and friendly tone, the knife still twirling around her palm effortlessly as she looked back towards Jim. Guns she might be an amateur with, but she had been working with blades for so long in her line of work that she had come to find they made for good defensive tools as well as medical examination implements.

Jim and Dimitri gave an impresed whistle at Anna's skill with the knife. Not many people could do what she was doing and make it look that easy. Jim rumaged around in his duffle bag searching for the type of gun Anna needed to use for the test. Sometimes people learned best by copying movements. He wasn't sure how Anna best learned things, but he figured it wouldn't hurt. Once he found it he pulled it out and loaded it in a few quick easy movements. "Ready?" He asked.

"As ready as I'm gonna be."
Anna gave a small sigh before firmly grasping the knife in hand and sliding it back into the holster concealed in her boot. She stood back up and went to retrieve her examination gun, holding it far less confidently then she had wielded the knife. She then stepped up next to Jim so that they were both standing in the same shooting range.
"Well, here goes nothing."
She took the gun in both hands and held it out, remaining perfectly still in the position so that she could watch Jim while also getting feedback on what she needed to do.
