Sketching on the riverfront was getting boring. Sunshine had enough of painting and sketching riverboats, old mills, and trolleys going down the street. It was time for a change. She had set up a canvas outside an old mansion, studying the architecture and chewing on a shrimp Po boy made from leftover read from the bakery. The green on her brush got dabbled in, turning it into a patchy tree.

Ralph was exhausted. He was only just getting off from his latest case and, while he had managed to finally get some pictures of his client's husband visiting his mistress, he wouldn't be able to get the pictures to the right sources until he had caught some zzz's. He had spent the whole night watching the house where the cheating husband lived and his lover visited when the wife wasn't in town. He had been watching the place for most of the night and had only caught the two together in the early hours of the morning.
The Giant let out a loud yawn and rubbed his tired eyes with his large hand as he thought over the case. The wife had come to him and stated her suspicions that her husband was cheating on her. However, she didn't have the proof to file for a divorce and wanted him to get it. Well, he had it now and would soon send it to the right sources such as the wife's divorce lawyer, but his energy was nearly gone and before he did anything else he needed some sleep.
He was just turning along one of the corners of Lieu Sanglante when he was hit by another yawn. He was so busy trying to stifle it that he didn't see the canvas set on the sidewalk or the artist until he had run straight into them.
"Ah damn it!"
Ralph stepped backwards as his large frame caused the painting to hit the ground. He was just leaning over to pick it up and an apology was forming on his lips when he looked at the owner of the painting. He paused and blinked.
"Sunshine?"

"EEK!"
That was the only noise Sunshine could make before the canvas nearly hit her in the face. The good news was, the canvas decided not to hit her square on. But it did leave a nice, grass green streak on her cheek, making her look like she got kissed by a Dyrad. The grabbed the scattered tuff off the ground, frowning at the squirt of green that got on the sidewalk from the tube. She'd clean it up later.
But then a voice called her name.
Sunshine took a look at who had spoken. It was a very big guy, like big enough to dwarf a basketball plyer. He was blinking at her, and she just cocked her head. "I'm sorry, but...have we met?"

"Once. A few years back at the BPD."
Ralph carefully picked up the painting and placed it on its stand as he looked at the blonde woman more closely. Yes, it was definitely Sunshine. She had just joined the BPD around the time he himself had left and it was somewhat amazing to realize he remembered her enough to have recognized her. The one time he had met her she had seemed like a nice enough person and might be able to rub some of her lighter attitude off on Shadow. Still, it wasn't a surprise that she didn't recognize him.

Sunshine just looked at him. A few years...she was only in the BPD for almost two years. She was the youngest recruit cop-wise, and that meant not a lot of older cops noticed her, unless they were friends or acquaintances of Shadow. But then, she remembered one of her first missions, how she was thirsty and went to the cooler, and how a very big hand guided her way from the cooler in the closet near the offices...
"OH! You were the bug guy who helped me with the water cooler! When I accidentally drank the holy water."
Her face had been so pink at the time. But now, Sunshine was just laughing at her naivety.

Ralph watched a crease appear on Sunshine's forehead as she tried to remember him. Something must have clicked because her expression cleared and she spoke of the first and only time he had really spoken with her.
"Yeah. Good thing you weren't a vampire like some of the other detectives the BPD has had, otherwise I would have spent my last day cleaning up the ashes of a new recruit."
He could remember it himself. He was in the process of clearing out his desk and had come out into the hallway to throw out some garbage when he had seen the young, blonde recruit drinking water out of the container where they held their supply of holy water. She was new and the cooler didn't exactly have a label on it so he had gone over and explained what she was drinking. Her face had been a bright pink as he directed her down the hall to the actual water fountain but that had been the last he had seen of the woman. Until today.

"And...the last thing they need is for the media to get hold of said ashes..." Despite Sunshine's smile and crack, she still felt a twinge of discomfort when it came to vampires. She had yet to meet one in the BPD, but her distrust was big. This bug guy wouldn't hurt her. She wiped at the green smudge of her cheek,
"So...you went off to do something else?"

"Yeah, in a way."
Ralph didn't feel like going into detail how he had quit the BPD before they could actually fire him or the reasons behind his departure from the Others Unit. He'd already had to talk about it with another member of Bellerouge's finest he had run into and he didn't want to repeat that with Sunshine.
"I opened my own private investigator business. Actually coming back from a case I'm working on right now."
He didn't feel like going into the details and was spared the need to when another large yawn escaped him.

"That explains the sleepiness. Long case?" Sunshine wrung her hair nervously. It was against a lot of codes to ask about the private investiagator's work. One, it would upset any confidence that was held through the work. Two, it was just plain rude with her being an officer. The dedication to work was something she could relate to. If the BPD ever let them back on the La Llorona case, she'd be going around giving food to any kids in trouble. She thought about her co-worker at the bakery who brought his daughter, and about Yang. Would they be okay with a killer out?

"Long and boring but coming to an end."
Ralph managed to say this at the end of his yawn but didn't offer much in the way of details. He still held a large amount of distrust towards the BPD as an organization. Yes, he still had friends from the BPD that he spoke to and met a few times, but it was a small number and many of the officers now working at the station had arrived after his own departure. And while Sunshine had seemed nice enough upon their first meeting, he wasn't about to trust her after only one time.
"So you still partnered with Shadow?"

Not a lot of officers took notice about Sunshine. For them, she was just a lowly cop with sun harnessing skills. But, then again, Shadow was protective of her, keeping her in the company of people he trusted. This big guy seemed trustworthy enough, and more importantly, nice.
"Yeah, I'm still with Mr. Prickly," she dropped her voice to a whisper, "he'd kill me if he heard me call him that. Besides, I like working with him."

"He still as sour as he was when I left? I swear, I've known lemons that are sweeter then he was when I last saw him, and that was only last week!"
Ralph was mostly joking, although in truth his friend really did tend towards darker moods and sullen moments more than any other living person he had met. Even when they were off the job and just grabbing a few drinks together, it could be hard to get Shadow to lighten up.
"We went and grabbed some drinks together but his mood was even darker than usual. Said something about being upset over a case he was yanked off of."

"Everyone's upset, if it helps." Well, this guy knew Shadiw, which meant her guard has lowered. She let a frustrated sigh, her green eyes going downward. "Pardon my French, but the head of BPD really like to shit on the Others Unit. One minute we're helping locate bodies in the bayou, and the next...kicked off for no traces of supernatural activity." Pearl, Anna, and Kirk had to finish the autopsy, but hope was starting to wean.

Ralph raised an eyebrow at Sunshine's mild outburst about the head of the Bellerouge Police Department. However, his expression wasn't one of concern at her language or even judgmental about her attitude, rather it was the kind of look that someone who has experienced something similar might give.
"Sounds like much hasn't really changed since I left the BPD after all. The BPD head was fond of kicking the Others Unit off of cases labeled "non-supernatural" even when I was there."
He didn't even bother trying to keep his annoyance concealed from Sunshine. If there was one place where his anger at the BPD was the most focused, it had to be the head of police. After all, it had been through them that Ralph had received the warning that if he didn't start adhering to all the rules of the BPD he could kiss his badge goodbye.

"...Good to know that's of the norm, I guess..."
In truth, Sunshine was still new to the department. She had joined the academy at a very young age, all because of Shadow's letter of recommendation for her to join despite being under eighteen. She was on the brink of it, and had reached the age during her time at the academy, which was, honestly, sheer dumb luck. Her parents had been shocked to see the letter, and even more shocked that she would have to juggle shifts. Sunshine played with a strand of blonde hair, pulling it up and down, She wasn't anything special. The only thing special was that she could harness sunlight into yellow energy and healing factors. Not useful to have on the field during nighttime.
"So..." her guard was officially let down. If Shadow knew this guy and trusted him, so could she. "...you and Shadow knew each other while you there, huh?"
