There was a splashing sound nearby, and Shadow and Yang quickly veered to the left. She spotted what had made the noise a moment after he had: stuck in the mud was a little kid, his hand being the only visible part. Shadow pulled him out some of the way, and Yang was relieved to see that he was still alive. She scrambled over, the flames dying down in her hands as she grabbed the boy's other hand and pulled hard. Her head whipped around, wondering if the La Llorona killer was nearby. Had they left, thinking they had finished the boy off? Were they lying in wait, ready to pounce? Maybe they weren't here at all, and this was just a random incident of a kid getting lost in the swamp. It had happened before, but Yang didn't think it was a coincidence, not when the bodies of some kids had been found here not too long ago.

Between the blonde and his own strength, a nearly drowned boy was breathing. His chest, coated with sludge and swamp water, was rising between coughs. The only thing still submerged was an ankle. Shadow studied the ripples. Was this how the killer got the kids to drown? Weighing them down? Any more and the kid could be worse than nearly drowned.
"Stand back," he ordered the others
Taking a breath, Shadow held a hand aloft. The energy in him pulsed. The dark water would be too much of a waste, so the chaos spear was his chance of freeing the child. With a throwing motion, yellow fire-like shots went out. One hit the chain on the kid's ankle, also highlighting his dark hair and dark eyes.
But the other plan was to find what weighed them down. It was an d rope. But rather than a cinder block or anything typical heavy, the weight was some kind of chest. As the chaos spears died down, Shadow grabbed and rope and fished it out. This chest could be the clue that was missing,

"Jeez, how heavy is this kid?" Yang muttered. He didn't look he weighed much, but Shadow soon uncovered what the problem was. The kid's ankle had been chained to a pretty sturdy looking chest. No doubt the killer had done it to ensure the kid's body would sink to the bottom of the water. Yang shuddered at the thought. Deep water gave her the heebie-jeebies. The kid was still pretty out of it, but at least he was breathing. "Easy there, kid. You're okay," Yang said soothingly, hoping he wouldn't panic when he fully regained consciousness. No, that was a bit too much to ask for. Anyone would freak out after experiencing something like this, especially somebody as young as this kid. She glanced up as Shadow gave one last pull and hauled the chest onto dry land. "Is it locked?" she asked, glancing at it from where she was sitting with the kid.

Just so long as the kid was getting comfort was all right. Shadow was swiping the mud from the chest. There wasn't any family crest or any name adjusted to the chest. The only marking there was an uncanny mark similar to the killed victims. The only difference was there was a series of numbers; 062616. The rain was smudging more mud, meaning investigation would have to be done at headquarters.
The blonde girl asked if the chest was locked. The lock was there, but there wasn't a key or padlock. Despite shaking and jiggling, it still was stuck. "Locked. Jammed. It's one of the two. I'll have to take this to headquarters to see what this has to do with anything."
He joined her side to look at the little boy. He showed his badge, which really stuck out now with his white chest fur getting wet. "I'm a member of the Bellerouge Police. It's okay, you're safe now."
The little boy sniffed, "thanks. I thought I was done for. But," he pointed to the blonde, "who's she?"

Yang frowned. She was kind of hoping the chest could be opened now. She was curious as to what was inside, and if it could help solve the mystery. But, she had to take comfort in the fact that at least they had found something. And they had saved the kid, who was finally coming around a bit. When he asked who Yang was, she wasn't exactly sure how to respond. She and Shadow had literally met only a few moments ago. She wasn't sure if that made them friends. Maybe they were just acquaintances? She could go with that. "My name's Yang," she said to the kid. "I'm an...acquaintance of Shadow's." It still felt a little odd saying it, since all Yang knew about Shadow was what she had heard from Sunshine, but it was what she was going with for now.

Acquaintances. That was a very good word to go off of. Yang, as the blonde introduced herself, was doing a good job keeping the little boy calm. Maybe it was her skills when dealing with her own kids He nodded at Yang, deciding on what question to ask to kid next. An interrogation after drama was always difficult, and he didn't have any water or blankets; that would require a run, and even thought it would be fast, Shadow didn't want to risk the life of the boy and Yang at the same time. "Can you tell us your name?" Since names were being shared, best go that route.
The little boy looked at the two - one cop and one witness/ally - before answering, "...Nemo, sir."
"Okay, Nemo. Where do you live?"
"In Lieu Sanglate," came the answer. "A big pale green house with a squirrel living in a tree and a big white arch."
Specifics. Good. Shadow would need those if we wanted to get Nemo home safe. An address was more fitting, but given the crap Nemo had gone through, a house description would have to do. "Were you there this morning?"
Nemo shook his head. "I thought I was dreaming about swimming. But when I woke up, I really was in the water. Before it started raining, it was up to my waist. I don't know who got me out of bed," he gestured to his mud-stained pajames, "but it couldn't have been my parents. They're always too busy."

The boy, whose name was Nemo, answered the questions relatively calmly. Yang considered that a good thing. It showed he had some resilience. From what he said, it sounded like someone had carried him off from his house and brought him here to die. Yang bit her lip. "This is bad," she said to Shadow. "Whoever this abductor is, they seem pretty good at breaking into people's houses without getting caught." This would make them especially hard to catch.

Shadow nodded in agreement to Yang. This was opening a lot more doors to the investigation. Mainly how the killer targetted families. If what Nemo said was true the killer was targetting children who felt neglected. That meant, the back of his mind nagged, Yang's children could be in trouble, but...well, the killer would be roasted given Yang's fiery abilities. He patted Nemo's shoulder, asking "Can I get you anything?"
Nemo blinked blearily, "I just want my mom and dad,"
"I can do that," Shadow promised. He stood up, calling the cops-on-duty number, It rang for a while before getting an answer. "This is Detective Shadow Griffiths. I'm at the third fork of the bayou. One one of the La Llorona victims is alive...Yes, but...But we can't leave this kid alone! He's scared and probably on the verge of...I don't care if my unit was called off, I'm at least doing my job...well, can you come pick this kid up and take him home?...Yeah, third fork. Okay, thanks." The thansk part wasn't so sincere. Shadow's red eyes were blazing as he snapped the phone shut, fighting the urge to start swearing in front of a child.

Shadow seemed to agree with Yang's statement, but it looked like asking the boy anymore questions was going to have to wait. He called in to get someone to pick him up, and apparently whoever was on the other end of the line managed to piss him off. Yang remembered what Sunshine had said, about the BPD being kicked off this case. Despite her dislike of cops in general, she still felt like that was a stupid move, considering some of the friends she had were part of the unit and they were pretty nice. "Are the higher ups still acting like jerks?" she asked. "Sunshine mentioned how they've acting really...stupid lately." It was a bit of an inadequate description, but Yang felt like that was the best word she could come up with that didn't involve bad language.

Shadow let out a low breath. It felt weird talking about work to a total stranger, especially since he was too mad to say anything. Well, things that wouldn't scar poor Nemo for life. But then, the anger and frustration melted like butter in a hot pan, replaced with curiosity. Yang mentioned Sunshine, and more importantly, that she had talked with her. "You know Sunshine?" Whatever walls he had when talking with Yang before were completely down. Maybe it was the thougth of hearing the optimism of Sunshine through someone else, hearing she had gotten to another person besides him, that piqued his curiosity.

Yang nodded. "Yup. I go to the Nevermore Coffeehouse and Bakery a lot, so we just kind of ended up chatting and becoming friends and stuff." Heck, it was kind of hard not to become friends with Sunshine if you were in the same vicinity as her. She had a way of winning people over with hardly any effort at all. At least, that was how it seemed to Yang.

Shadow let out a small chuckle. Somehow Yang and Sunshine seemed like they'd be friends. Maybe that was why the black hedgehog was growing to like Yang; she was the fiery version of Sunshine. "I must not see you or we just miss each other. I go in all the time, too."

"Hmm, we may have to change that," Yang said, giving a little smile. Shadow seemed like a decent guy. Sure, she didn't know that much about him, but she'd like to. Having Sunshine there would probably help. She was good at breaking the ice in conversations.

Shadow chuckled. "what do you need me to do? Plant a tracking device?" It was rare for his comment of cop nature to be turned into a joke, but Yang was friendly and, proven to be trustworthy. He already pictured her joining him and Sunshine in a game of hold me while drinking their respective coffee. "And your kids? Do they like Nevermore as much as you?"

Yang gave a chuckle, although she was sure some of the cops she had given the slip would love to take that statement literally. Yang was a good fighter and all, but she could make a great escape when the occasion called for it. So far, she hadn't been caught. Well, technically she had by Pitch, but he let her go, so that didn't count in her mind. She nodded. "Yeah, they like it. One of them, Louie, loves beignets as much as I do. I swear, we could eat a million of those." Yang had officially dubbed Louie her fellow beignet lover a few months back, and he seemed to enjoy the title.
