The water level in the bayou was rising with the rainfall. Given the La Llorona killer was at large, that was bad. Rain was the cause of all of it, and reporters were talking about missing children. Reports went and came with findings from easy to find kidnappers to wanderers.
But that didn't away Shadow from getting the feeling kids could be in trouble.
Drops pattered hard on his head. He didn't bother taking an umbrella. The safety of children was more important. He was using in his inhibit ring to reflect light. The one time he needed Sunshine's power and she was on a shift. The only clue he had for now was a broken bracelet, letter beads scratched up and missing. This was a blind search, but at least there was something

While Yang wasn't exactly bursting with confidence anymore about this investigation, that didn't stop her from trying to find out something whenever she had nothing to do. After all, as long as the La Llorona killer was on the loose, her kids were in danger. Which was why, she happened to be mucking about in the swamp while it was raining. She wasn't fond of the place, but it was where some of the bodies had been found, so she figured she might as well start there. She managed to keep a flame going strong in her hand, despite the fact that it hissed every time a raindrop happened to hit it. As she carefully stepped around a pile of mud, she saw that she wasn't alone. Somebody else was here too. She squinted, trying to make them out better. Wait...a black hedgehog...wasn't that Shadow, Sunshine's partner? Despite being acquaintances with her for a while, Yang hadn't actually seen her partner face-to-face before. However, she hesitated in approaching him. Her run-in with Pitch was still fresh on her mind, and she wasn't sure how much info was given about her before he decided to let her go. She bit her lip, not sure what to do. It wasn't like she hated Shadow like most cops. She figured he was at least decent, considering Sunshine was friends with him. But paranoia was holding her back, and while it had saved her plenty of times in the past, it could sometimes get in the way of things.

Just as Shadow was getting his bearings, something unexpected occurred. The rotten tree he had stopped to study got bright, as if a pool of light had hit it. Pool of light? Not just any light either, but something giving off an orange yellow aura. How did she know he was coming in here? Better question, how did she find him? He put one hand on the tree,
"So far, nothing. I know what you're going to say; I'm in over my head, but I'mnot going to let anyone die. Not during this rain..." As he turned, he realized his mistake
Yes, the person close by was a blonde, but it wasn't Sunshine. Last he checked, Sunshine was not a master pyrokinetic. The little flame danced in the stranger's hand. It hissed it retaliation to each drop.
"Oh. Sorry, I thought you were someone else."

For a moment, Yang blinked in confusion as Shadow talked to her. But, when he apologized, she realized what had happened. She remembered her and Sunshine joking about how much they looked alike, thanks to both of them having bright blonde hair. But this was actually the first time she had been mistaken for her. "It's fine. Don't worry about it," she said, waving the matter aside. She hesitated for a moment before asking "So, whatcha doing out here?" If Shadow was here doing police work or something, she wasn't sure if he'd answer, what with confidentiality issues and all. But she figured it couldn't hurt to try.

Shadow nodded. This girl seemed kind and friendly, hardly s gone who would sadistcally drown innocents. Besides, her fire skills were useful. The bayou got dark around this time and swamp fog was an enemy to all investigations. After a momentary pause, he answered, "Normally I'd disclose information, but you look like someone who can help. I'm scouting the area in case a certain killer is taking advantage of the weather. What about yourself?"

Yang had a pretty good guess about who the certain killer might be. If Shadow was looking for clues, she figured she might as well help. He seemed to like the idea anyway. "I guess I'm here the same reason you are," she replied. "I've got kids to look after, and as long as that killer is running around, they're not safe." Maybe she could actually help make some progress on this case if she was investigating with an actual member of the BPD. She wasn't sure if she would count Shadow as a friend per say, but she was willing to work with him for the moment.

She had kids of her own? She looked maybe a year or so younger than Sunshine. So many questions ran through Shadow's head. How many? Where did they live? Had the police tried to bully them into foster homes despite the Peter Pan Act? Time was not on their side. A rumble of thunder snapped him out of question mode as he looked at the broken letter bracelet. "Does this ring a bell? I found it in the big near that patch of cat tails."

Shadow seemed almost confused by the statement Yang made, but it didn't seem like he was about to ask questions now. He instead went right back to the investigation, showing her a bracelet he had found. She shook her head in response to his question, though. "Doesn't stand out to me. Seems like a pretty common bracelet, though. Kids always like getting them so they can spell out their names and stuff."

No recognition. Oh well. But she did have a point; the bracelets were common. Was it a tactic by the killer? Best not to think about it. All that mattered was it was a clue. Sunshine would have said something positive like that at least this syranger's kids weren't hurt. But that wasn't true. He let the thought go and pocketed the bracelet,
"Fair enough. Thanks anyways. So far, it's been the only clue. I was heading there," he gestured farther down the bayou. "And we better go. The tide gets highest around 9 P..."
But as he continued, a high pitched scream echoed throughout the bayou. Unsuspected people would have seen this as a ghost story come to life. Even Shadow twitched at the sound. Apparently he had spoken too soon

Yang bit her lip. It wasn't much of a clue to go on. Maybe if they had a bloodhound or a werewolf, maybe whatever scent was on there could be tracked. Wasn't that how it worked? She wasn't entirely sure. But, any thoughts about that were interrupted when a loud scream echoed through the air. Yang's eyes narrowed. She wasn't sure if the scream belonged to an adult or a child, but either way, it could mean that the Llorona killer was nearby. Her fists became encased in flames. "You're not getting away from me," she muttered. She took off running towards the sound, not really having a plan beyond shooting some fireballs and letting her fists fly. But, that was typical of Yang. Her emotions tended to fuel her rather than reason.

Well, nice to know this stranger wasn't afraid of running into danger. Shadow watched her rush off, taking a second to charge chaos to his jets. The skates, unlike man made rockets, were powered by the power he held. They hummed until he was shooting off, gliding like a speed skater to catch up to the literally fired up blonde. He caught up and glided by her side. Years at the force taught him running after someone invoked a chase, which he had no intention on giving his unlikely ally.

Shadow caught up soon enough, thanks to some handy skates he had. Yang wondered if he had made those himself or something. They could come in handy, although she was pretty good at shooting off like a rocket with a fiery blast. It wasn't technically flying, but she could get pretty far as long as she had enough fire in her. "Any idea what we can expect?" she asked as she narrowly avoided a puddle. She figured there wasn't much Shadow knew about the La Llorona killer, but any info was probably helpful at this point. Of course, the killer may not have been responsible for the scream, but still.

"My guess? Keep your eyes open for firearms. A killer doesn't go out unprepared. Also, make sure that nothing that's likely to hide a kids gets hurt."
Honestly, the real plan was play it by ear. If the La Llorona killer was going to get caught, it was a blind test. The case had no evidence on attacks save for the rosary burn. True, the rosary could be used for strangling, but that could be a risk when going against two fast footed fighters.
Another cry cane out. But rather than being a scream like before, the noise was definitely belonging to someone young. So much for fighting a killer. But a kid's scream was a good thing. It meant there was someone who was going to be okay and it gave them a general direction of where to turn

The advice was of a general kind, but Yang figured it was better than nothing. Until they found the source of the screaming, they couldn't really plan ahead much. But she liked it that way. She was better at thinking on her feet anyway. When another scream was heard, her head shot up. That definitely sounded like a kid. Whether the killer was nearby was unknown, but at least the kid was still alive. And if she and Shadow could just make it there quickly enough, it could stay that way.

The run was relatively quiet. Shadow had no other advice to give, at least not yet. The only noises to be heard were the splashing of the blonde's footfalls and the swishhing of his jets pushing the water away like an airboat. The child had to be left out somewhere nearby. As Shadow swerved to avoid a rotting stump, a splashing noise came from the left side. "Left!" he called to the blonde as he changed route.
The rush took them to a land part of the bayou. The island was small, but at least it was a section of dry land. The bad news was whatever dry land was nromally htere was being swallowed by high tide. A small hand was stick ing out Much to Shadow's relief, it was wiggling freely; someone was trying to get out.
"We've got something. Help me get him out!" Shadow called out as he ran over. He gripped the young hand and began pulling. The fingers of the hand closed in, and the black hedgehog began to pull. The water made a sucking noise as it began to expel what it had been trying to swallow. It was a besodden young boy, coughing out water as oxygen was returning to his lung.
