"A Nevermore beignet and a coffee does sound good right now. Maybe not as many as Louie would like, but anything to get my mind off this rain," Shadow half-joked. He and Sunshine often carried a hot pot in their car, usually for brewing hot drinks to calm people down. IF they weren't waiting for the cops, he would have given Yang and Nemo something warm to drink. Plus, he hadn't eaten in while, if the Chinese in the fridge hadn't gone bad yet, he would stuff himself full. But, he focused on trying to keep Nemo warm, adjusting tree branches to avoid dripping water on the muddy boy.

Yang glanced up as Shadow mentioned the rain. It was coming down a bit hard. But it wasn't exactly monsooning yet, which worked in Yang's case. While she couldn't exactly make a fire thanks to all the wood around here getting soaked, she could still make something, and that could probably warm Nemo up little bit. "Hey, check this out," she said, grinning at the little boy before making a flame appear in her hand, much like when she and Shadow had first run into each other. Hopefully, it would distract the kid a little bit from the gloomy environment they were in.

The leaves and sticks were being bent, and while Shadow couldn't tie them down, he could at least pin them in place with rocks. A makeshift shelter was completed, and he looked at Nemo, asking, "Are you okay?"
"...Yeah," Nemo answered amid shivers.
Shadow frowned. Heat was what he needed. It was one thing to have a roof above his head. But Yang was one step ahead of the curb. Despite the mild rain, she was able to conjure up a small flame like she had held in her hands earlier. The yellow-orange tongues of fire licked up some of the flecks of dry wood and lichen in the bayou's air, turning it to black filling the air with a small scent of smoke and leaving behind a greenish trail. But instead of spreading out of control or becoming smaller, it stayed a relative size. Nemo's eyes widened, carefully extending one hand out to wamr himself. Shadow gave an impressed nod to Yang, adding just one word; "Nice."

"Being half phoenix does have its perks," Yang said, giving a grin. Sure, she couldn't be reborn from ashes or stuff like that, but being able to make fire had come in handy many times since she had started living on the streets. She never had to worry about carrying a lighter or a matchbox. As long as she had something to burn, she could make a fire.

"Have to say, that's a first I've heard of a half-Phoenix." It was true. In all of his years on the police force and just living in Bellerouge in general, Shadow had never come across a half-phoenix...anything. Phoenixes were rare in general. The only knowledge of their existence was that things woven from tufts of their feathers to make fire retardant blankets and clothing was sold in Magnolia Road. Better yet, the fire was a win=win. It would keep everyone including Nemo, warm and maybe give a heads up to where the three of them were stranded to the cops coming to pick them up.

Shadow's reaction was a typical one. Phoenixes weren't as common as other supernatural creatures, like vampires or fairies. Yang wasn't sure if she wanted to feel special because of that, though. It made her think of her mother, and Yang's parents were a touchy subject for her. She always tried to avoid mentioning them, if possible. "Well, you're the first...uh...hedgehog person that I've met," she replied.

The faintest trace of a smile crossed Shadow's face. "That seems to be the common term to describe me," he muttered. "To be honest, I have no idea what I am. Worst part, I can't even remember...family." That was the best of his knowledge on how to put his amnesia. He only remembered his time on the force, his friends, what he had for breakfast this morning and....Maria.
For the briefest of seconds, he swore he saw her on the shore, her blonde hair getting pelted with rain, her big eyes pleading. Suddenly she crumpled, only letting out a noise...
Shadow blinked, listening to the dying sound of thunder. The noise was Nemo sneezing, sniffling as he wiped his nose with his arm.

"Oh. I'm sorry." Sunshine hadn't mentioned that. Then again, losing your memory was kind of a personal issue. Yang couldn't imagine what that was like. As painful as some of her memories were, at least she had them. They made her remember why she was the way she was. She glanced up at Shadow, and her eyes furrowed. He seemed kind of...spaced out, like his mind wasn't here. "You okay?" she asked.

If Nemo sneezing didn't bring Shadow to full consciousness, Yang's voice certainly did. Where Maria had been standing was just a rotting log with cat tails getting rained upon. He had been having thoughts of Maria a lot recently, maybe because the thought of what would have happened if she hadn't died...but he hadn't found it necessary to talk to anyone, including Sunshine.
"...I'm fine. Just...wrapped up in thoughts, I guess."
The little white lie would have to do. True, Yang was Sunshine's friend and was helping him save a boy's life, but his trust to confine personal topics wasn't so easily bought. A short siren wailed, and headlights blazed through the brush, flooding white light, and flashes of blue and red, through the bog.
"Detective Griffiths?" A voice called out.
Shadow raised his hand. "He's with me!" Part of him wanted to give Yang credit, but his colleagues' reactions to get were uncertain.

Yang narrowed her eyes. Shadow was hiding something, she could tell. Heck, she often did the same thing herself. But before she could contemplate whether to ask more questions, a police siren sounded, along with a voice. Yang let out a breath. While she'd love to stick around make sure Nemo was okay, she knew better than to stick around with a bunch of cops. What if Pitch was there, or some other police officer she had tangled with in the past? It was probably best if she left. "Hey, um, you got this, right?" she asked Shadow.

Was Yang going to take off before the police got there? Well, that was a question for another day. Shadow's remark of "Be careful," was a two-fold response; a means of saying she could go and gratitude for keeping Nemo warm and warm, ot to mention her assistance in helping get him out. He helped the younger boy up, hailing the officer again with a hand up. "He lives in Lieu Sanglate," he reported as he guided the boy over to the car. But, if he was going to give Yang credit, he would do it without mentioning her, "An anonymous source led us here."
"Any clues on the killer?"
"That chest," Shadow pointed to the box with his thumb. "we can break into it at headquarters."
The police took pictures of the crime scene, all while comfortably talking to Nemo. His work done, Shadow turned in the direction of his own car, speeding off and hoping Yang would be fine, but he knew she could take care of herself. A half-phoenix would be hard to take down.

No doubt Shadow had questions on his mind. Innocent people didn't run from the police, after all. But, Yang would have to try and think of an answer for them another time. She gave a nod at his farewell before running off, careful not to step into too much mud. She only glanced back once, and saw Shadow talking with an officer while some others comforted Nemo. She had to smile a little at that. The kid was safe, and hadn't ended up another victim. Plus, there was the chest. Maybe it could help lead the police to the killer. Or, maybe it was nothing. But Yang refused to think that. She had to be positive. So, she focused on the good outcomes as she headed out of the marsh, her blonde hair bobbing with every step.
