Shadow mused on that. Vanitas was one reason he had stayed behind. There had to be some kind of crack in his seemingly flawless defense system. Elsa had been digging herself but was coming up dry. The red and black hedgehog looked back over at Namine. There was something about her stature, about her quiet and well meaning nature that was...familiar. A weird wave of conscious comparissons were flooding it. Her white dress was sort of blueish now...her blonde hair was swept back by a blue hairband...
Maria.
He snapped out of that thought quickly. Namine may have looked like Maria, and some time acted like Maria, but the reality was she was dead and Namine wasn't her. But the spitting image was...well...uncanny. "Kind of," he answered. "Really it was more of a...personal exploration than police work. Well, it started off as police searching, and then it blended into an ego trip, and..." he sighed, knowing what he was saying would make no lick of sense if he continued.

Personal like Aqua's search for Terra. The blue faery might have thought she was clever about hiding her tracks, but Namine knew. Secrets were something Namine was good with. She had quite a few of her own that she had not shared with anyone on the force. She hadn't wanted their pity. For others it was pride. Still, there were those who didn't know how to talk about it.
"I-It'll be okay," she said, soft spoken but firm.

Soft but firm. Wow, this artist girl was giving Shadow so many Maria vibes, that it almost wasn't real. At least, the memories he had of her were. He had to mentally kick himself for thinking that. He had thought it with Sunshine. The only blonde, ironically, he didn't get a Maria vibe from was Yang. Part of him wondered how she was since the whole ball incident.
"Yeah, that's what Sunshine says, too." He slumped back at his desk, leafing through the printouts. "A lack of memory doesn't help..."

"O-Oh," she breathed.
Her momentary spurt of bravado was gone like a balloon being deflated. Memories. She knew she could control memories, manipulate them if she had to, but she was far too afraid to use it on another person. Not after what happened the first time. She shrank in on herself a little, gripping her cup close. Did he know about her powers? She had kept that a secret for the most part. Most of the people she met had always taken her for Human. Not gifted. She could feel her heart racing in her chest.

"You should rest. Honestly, I should be taking my own advice." The quivering cup in Namine's hand looked likely was about to spill at any given moment. Her eyes, beneath the anxiety, had subtle signs of fatigue. He looked at the paper of an old printout he recovered from the archives. In the picture was a balding bespectacled man with a white Roosevelt mustache. This was the scientist he had seen in the memories granted to him by Disparion.
"Just who are you, Professor?" He whispered to himself. "I know your face and your voice...but how?"

"I-I want to help b-but I..."
She shook her head. She couldn't do this! It was a bad idea. The worst idea. Her powers were dangerous and uncontrollable, namely due to her fear of how to use them. Memories themselves were such fragile things to begin with. The wrong amount of tampering could seriously hurt someone. She didn't think she could live with herself if that ended up happening. Someone had to have told Shadow about her powers or maybe he read her file but that was a horrible idea.
"I can't." she breathed. "I just can't."

"Are you okay?"
Dumb question, she was definitely not okay. Anxiety had been risen by the twentieth. Aqua had not mentioned any sort of fear in connection. And it wasn't like Shadow was asking her to use her powers up front.

"I'm a witch," Namine said quietly. "W-With the power over memories. B-But it's not s-safe. I don't want to hurt you."
That part was honest. Namine's father used to call her a witch, among other things. Yelling at her, hurting her, telling her how useless she was. She didn't want to be. But at the same time, she didn't want to do something and hurt Shadow. She could turn him into a vegetable if she wasn't careful, without the ability to make new memories or even think for himself. It was terrifying - her power. She hated that she even had it.

((Okay LOL on the vegetable thing. Just pictured her turning him into an artichoke)) A witch. That was something that was in a gray area. Witches could be good or they could use their magic for malicious ways. Namine didn't seem like the type who would do something entirely out of spite. Shadow set his coffee down, "Aqua told me about your ability with memories. She didn't go into much detail, she just said you had some kind of touch."

Namine looked down. She felt like crying. Aqua had been one of the few people she trusted with this 'secret'. The faery might not have realized it, but she didn't give that information lightly. It was hard enough telling Shadow. It was admitting a lot of her own short comings to the officer. She was afraid he was going to think less of her because she was afraid of her own powers.
"I c-can," she said softly. "B-But I... I c-could make you forget. Everything."

"Don't worry, the forget part's been taken care of." Even just mentioning this amnesia to Namine was uncharacteristic of him. He was trying to make light of this whole situation, but at the same time, he was opening up a side of him only a select few knew about. If Shadow was opening up this early, it meant there was something he found trustworthy in a person. Yes, he had just met her in person, but Namine had never led the department astray

Namine bit her lip. It didn't make it any better or make her want to use her powers any more. But if he already forgot, then would it hurt try? It already felt like a bad idea. She was afraid. She was always afraid. Of accidentally using her powers, of other people, of everything. But Shadow seemed so sad. It was awful that he knew what she could do but she couldn't help him. Or rather she was too afraid to help him.
"I... I could try?" she whispered.

The timid response was something Shadow had expected. She was afraid of her gifts. Then agaib, most gifted humans who had suffered any kind of mental abuse were. People like Sunshine, who had embraced their gifts openly and could share it with people they cared about, were less susceptible to not wanting to do any powers. Also, what was he thinking talking all about this to Namine. If she didn't want to use her powers, that was her choice. She didn't need him to make her probe into a mind that was tangled with memories that were either true or false. "Only if you want to."

"M-Maybe tomorrow," she said.
She certainly didn't want to try poking around in his memories when both of them were about ready to collapse on their feet. She was still hesitant to do it, but she wanted to help, Shadow insisted there was no further damage she could do. She still felt faint at the idea, but she was a gifted human. She had to come to terms with her abilities at one point or another. She couldn't keep hiding. Even if she would still prefer the pool of people who knew what she could do a secret.

"All right."
She had a point. Given how tired both of them were, poking around his head would have to wait until they were rested. He looked at his phone to check the clock. It flashed 8;00. The Nevermore kiosk would be opening up, and Sunshine's stepbrother Thomas had started working there. He also had made a habit of picking Sunshine up to get to work. A familiar face would help,
"You...want to get breakfast at the kiosk? I usually meet Sunshinr down there."
