Sunshine laughed. Jane was funny, whether she knew it or not. Her nose wrinkled in disgust, and she pushed it back, her feet flexing as she swung forward.
"Yep. I'm part of the BPD. Toting criminals to the prison is the worst, especially when they rave about..."
She decided to stop herself there. What criminals could she talk about without triggering a panic attack? She was still not sure about vampires, even if they were stunned by garlic spray. And some criminals raved so much, the threats were beginning to blur into an aggressive mess

Jane's smile faded almost completely. This girl was a part of the BPD? She hardly looked the part. Granted Jane had a bias towards police officers that became almost a deeply rooted hatred for those in the uniform. But she couldn't necessarily take that out on Sunshine. The girl didn't know, and she hadn't exactly acted like the other officers had. So the half troll just moved past it.
"I haven't found a job yet. Considered looking over at the library." she said. "Or maybe seeing if some students needed a tutor or something."

"I'd aim for the library. It's less competition than a school tutor," Sunshine suggested. So Jane was a bookish type, which was just okay. The last bookworm she knew had passed away from being a prostitute. She had never known the darker side of the city until finding out from Shadow, who has put the customer's pimp behind bars. The only books Sunshine read were cookbooks. "The only time I ever read is to figure out how to make a cherry pie less boring."

"So... You make a lot of pie?" Jane said.
An officer and a baker? Seems this woman was stretched thin. As long as she could do her jobs nothing seemed to be wrong. The woman seemed happy enough despite the contrasting work and hobby. Jane couldn't say much. She was the daughter of a rock star who wanted a quiet life with books. Solace was found in the pages of old text.

Sunshine smiled again. Jane sounded both curious and concerned. "Yeah. My stepdad owns the Nevermore Bakery. He's had it ever since he and my mom got hitched. I got the baking job when I turned sixteen. So...two years baking, one year on the police force. My partner Shadow teases me in saying I should bring dessert as a means of coping with criminals; sweet tooth never fails," her laugh was a light chuckle

"Yeah because you're supposed to reward the bad guy for what they do."
She was unable to keep the vicious bite out of her voice as she spoke. Treats for bad people, even if suggested as a joke, left Jane with a bad taste in her mouth. The system was broken. Jail time did nothing to curve crime. Officers were too thinly spread. Jane frowned as she looked down at the dirt beneath her shoes. Seems like the city hadn't changed since she was whisked away.

Sunshine's face went from a semi smile to a hurt glare at Jane. Mood swing much? She said herself it was a joke. They never gave away goodies to bad guys. What they got was a long dull drive. It wasn't fun for the cops either.
"Not all cops are shitty, you know. I know you had a bad experience, but you can't just include everyone who actually does their job in the ring of disrespect."
She hopped off the swing, trying to find her shoes. Of course, they were gone. Probably buried underneath the mulch

"The last cop I met, sent me away and I was separated from my father for eleven years." Jane said evenly. "Cops and I don't get along. But... I know why people like that are necessary. Someone has to protect people, even if some of them screw up."
Jane leaned back and looked up at the sky. She had heard tales of heroism, valor and sacrifice from others. There were bound to be a few good cops out there, but Jane couldn't trust them as far as she could throw them. Not after how much time of her own childhood she lost. The family she was torn from just because she was picked up by the wrong cop and no one stood up for the sobbing nine year old girl or listened to what she had to say. That's why there were cold cases - like her mother's and brother's.

"Unless that cop had a license, he had no right swiping you away from your family." Sunshine began sweeping the mulch around. Oh, come on, where were her shoes? She had them right there. Finally, she found one. Talking about cops would make her mad, but she did have something in common with Jane.
"My father up and left me. I was only six. And I don't know why he did."

"Unfortunately there are stupid people out there," Jane said. "Your dad is one of them. No offense."
That could both be said about the officer who re-homed her and the father who walked out on Sunshine. Someone who could do that had to be wrong in the head or something. Her dad had been absolutely overjoyed and ecstatic to see her again. But for someone to give their child up? It made no sense. The blonde did seem nice. Even if she was a cop. Jane supposed that would have to be something she would have to overlook a lot around here.
"What made you decide to be a cop?" she asked, rather surprised by it.

Susnhine ignored the huff about stupid people. To be honest, she had completely forgotten what her father was like, so there was nothing really to get offended by. Not many people knew that dark stain in what was her positive attitude. She instead shook out the splinters and mulch from her shoes and leaned them against the swing. There. That way they couldn't fall and disappear. She settled back into the swing while grabbing her sketchpad, flipping through her sketches. Her finger paused on the one drawing she had done of Shadow in her style.
"I thought it'd get easier to talk about over time. It still kind of brings back...awkwardness." She handed Jane the sketch of the stoic red and black hedgehog. "That's my partner, who was the one who got me the gig. He was also what got me inspired to be a cop. You see...I...sort of didn't really care about Others until I got snatched up by vampires. But I wasn't the only one targetted by that gang. Shadow was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught, too. The vampires tormented both of us..." She sighed, trying to block out the goblin giggler and Jasmine's leers, their eyes changing a vibrant orange-red hue as they leered in to try and scare her - and succeeding - and the constant bruises and abuse they both went through.
"His stubborness made me realize sitting around and doing nothing wasn't good for anybody. One day, I tried something using my hair," she stroked her hair, "and it worked. We got out okay. Since then, I just...I just want to see what I can do now that I know I'm not just some baker girl, you know what I mean?"

Jane’s mouth worked slowly but words didn’t seem to tumble out. She had no idea how Sunshine could talk about something like that and still be so cheery. Jane’s attitude towards everything went south after her mother and brother’s murder. She had been an angry little kid that no one understood which only got her into trouble with the foster care center. It wasn’t until she was older that she was able to fake being happy. Being back in the city, was the first time she truly felt happy especially now she had her dad back and had new friends. “I… Sunshine that’s…” she fumbled for words. Nothing seemed to amount to what she needed or wanted to say to the blonde. “It make sense. It's important to you."

Sunshine just sat in silence as Jane's mouth struggled to find words to say. This was one of the many reasons unshine didn't like talking about the story, the reactions ranged from angry remarks at resorting to an Other to help her or to questions she really didn't want to answer. Her only response to Jane's final statement was a wordless nod, and her hands wrapped around the swing, the fingers closing in as if she were trying to squeeze the memory out It didn't help the goblin giggler turned to a balloon when she stabbed him with a spoon a few months later.

"I'm glad you can smile." Jane said.
She didn't look over at Sunshine as she spoke. Instead she watched the kids in the park laugh and play. She felt a tinge of jealousy towards them. They didn't know what it was like to be truly alone. But Sunshine, while obviously impacted by the events in her life, didn't let pessimism get her down.
"Makes me think I can smile like that too."

"You've been through a lot," There was a seriousness laced with Sunshine's tone. She looked over at the group of kids where Jane was watching. The laughter was almost contagious, but with the attitude Jane had been coping showed that her childhood was anything but happy. "Shadow doesn't smile much either. Then again, he has no memory of the past and, well, he's...seen a lot. He'd kick the ass of that cop who took you away, though, I can guarantee it. I would, too."
