"Maybe I just need to see that not all cops are bad." Jane said.
It would take a lot of time. And patience, particularly on the officer's part. Jane had inherited her father's temperament after all, among his bloodline. She was quick to judge and quicker to hold a grudge. She let out a small sigh when she heard the kids laughing again. What she wouldn't have done to started all over again.
"Do you think we could be friends?" she asked.

"A friend offer that isn't virtual?!"
Sunshine exaggeratedly fell off the swing along with her gasp. The joke faint didn't hurt much, and she sat up, dusting the wood chips off of her. She grinned at Jane's direction. "Well, acquaintances isn't a bad start. And I'm always looking for people to hang out with outside the department."

"Oh ha ha," she said.
She shook her head over Sunshine's show of dramatics. But it certainly did lighten the mood. Jane had to cut back, learn how to talk to people her own age. Never staying in one place for very long didn't help her but she was trying. Sunshine seemed like a good test run on newfound social skills that didn't involve bars and drinking.
"Fair enough." she replied. "So... Tell me more about yourself Sunny."

"First of all, don't call me Sunny," Sunshine narrowed her eyes. "The only nickname I answer to is Blondie." After she got that bit of seriousness out of the way, she flipped some of her blonde hair out of her eyes. "Where to begin? Um...well, I live in the French Quarter." At least she could tell a friend where she lived in case Jane wanted a girls' night. "I'm, what you'd call a Renaissance person. I paint, I craft, I bake, I...dabble in a couple of things. I read a tiny bit."

"Okay," Jane said. "I'm sorry. I didn't know."
Open mouth. Insert foot. Jane wasn't doing great in her attempts to be less of a jerk it seemed. She smiled a little uncertainly. Okay, now she had to make this better. Wasn't hard. Sunshine had a lot of cool things to do when she wasn't out being a cop.
"Renaissance? Huh..." she mused. "Seems like you keep yourself busy. All those hobbies!"

"I'm surprised I can handle all of them myself," Sunshine answered. There were some days where after working a case of a long shift or both, she would vent by painting a picture. "Maybe it's a vent outlet. Seems to cool me off when I'm overworked."

"Well, are you going to that big party?" Jane asked. "Apparently some of high society is throwing some sort of shindig at their place."
Jane had helped Yang find her dress and shoes. She wanted to make sure Yang went at least. Yang deserved to go out and have fun. She spent so much time taking care of those kids of hers, that she forgot to be a kid herself. It was kind of sad really. Seems like everyone in this town grew up too fast for their own good.

"Oh, the masquerade party?" Sunshine perked up. Shadow already had elaborate plans - and by elaborate, everything has been planned. He was welding armor using his chaos abilities, and promised she could shed artistic licensing on the character going with him.
"My family's catering, so of course I'm going! I was shocked that Shadow wanted to go. He's usually," she lowered her vocal range to try and imitate her partner's husky, low tone, " 'Pft, I'd rather chew aluminum that stand around the nampy pampy crowd."

"Yeah. That." Jane said.
She had helped Yang find a dress and a pair of shoes. She had even found a dress for the occasion, despite Jane's one dislike of dolling herself up for no reason. It was nice to hear that someone else was going too. She supposed that Sunshine was better than any of the other cops that were bound to show up at the promise of free food.
"Then I'll be sure to try what you and your family make," Jane said. "Your partner sounds like a riot though."

Sunshine cheered inwardly. A guarantee people would eat what they served as opposed to having people turn up their noses at the Seddon's food was better than no one apart from family friends coming by and eating it out of pity.
"I'll keep an eye out for you. What color is your mask? That way I can pick you out."

"Haven't decided on a mask yet. Probably something that'll go with my dress. It's green." Jane said. "I was helping a friend get her stuff ready."
She smiled. She was looking forward to the party. At least there would be good food there. She hadn't been to a big party like that in a while. One of her foster families was all into that sort of stuff. Jane wasn't a high society type. Especially silver spoon type. She preferred the bar, drinking and loud music. She got it from her father she supposed. Just like Sunshine got baking from her family.
"What about you? I double I'll miss you in the crowd." she said.

"I'm going as Lady Elaine...um...oh, wait, you know who she is!" Sunshine smacked her forehead. Jane would know about Arthurian myth. She was smart enough, "I'll have a bunch of flowers in a thick braid. I don't have a mask; it'll retract too much from being a pleasant server."

"I'm sure you'll look great!" Jane assured her. "You know, not many people focus on that story. It's all Arthur and Gwendolyn or Merlin and Morgan le Fey."
It was nice to see someone focusing on something other than the stories that Hollywood had made famous. Jane liked the Grimm stories the best, mostly because it involved Others. Not many stories had creatures displayed in a good light.

"Yeah, everyone forgets about Lancelot and a girl who had the hots for him. Then he turns her down." Sunshine smirked. It was hard not to laugh at the image of Shadow in a bulky knight armor. He pitched the idea to her, saying they'd stand out as a duo. Sunshine had agreed on the promise of artistic license. Also, thank God their relationship was nothing like Lancelot and Elaine.

"I almost wish I had someone to double costumes with. It'd be much more fun than just a dress," Jane said.
Then again, Jane pretty much only knew her dad and Yang. The former might not have even gone to the party out of sheer stubbornness to protest the high society bash, and probably because he was cheesed off that no one asked him to play for the night. She doubted heavy metal went hand in hand with the sort of party they were going to. As for Yang, the young foster mom needed to get out and on her own, without anyone else interfering. Yang needed to be reminded she was still a kid, a young adult, and could still have a bit of fun that didn't involve fight rings, bars and taking care of the other kids on the street.
