Yang had never really been to a masquerade ball before, but when she heard about the one going on at the Lafayette mansion, she made up her mind to go. It sounded like fun. Not to mention, a lot of people would be there. There was just one problem: She didn't have anything fancy to wear. Yang had been prepared to try and scrounge something up at a thrift store, or steal something, but her kids had convinced her to ask Jane for help. So, the two of them had decided to go on a shopping trip and pick out dresses to wear. Yang didn't like asking for help, but Jane had pretty much offered to help her out whenever she needed it. Besides, a dress was a little more pricey than a pizza or a pair of sneakers. Now, she found herself waiting outside Sweet Pea and Tulip Botique, keeping an eye out for Jane. She was a little reluctant to go in there by herself. This place was the fancy/cute type, and Yang didn't look either of those things. She'd stand out like a sore thumb.

Jane was more than delighted to hear Yang ask for her help to find a dress for the big masquerade. She hurried to the store. She wanted to make Yang look amazing. It was the least the young woman deserved. Jane doubted that Yang ever got the chance to be anything more than the tough girl she was and the adoptive mother of four. It was probably hard for Yang to get out when she was taking care of her children.
"Hey! Were you waiting long?" Jane asked.

Yang waved to Jane as she headed over the store. She seemed pretty excited about all this. Maybe it was just the opportunity to help Yang in the first place. People didn't do it too often, after all. "Nope. I only got here a few minutes ago," she replied. She glanced back at the store. "I can't remember the last time I set foot in a place like this," she said.

Jane's expression softened. She could only imagine why Yang felt so uncomfortable doing something girly. She had to be tough, living on the streets the way she did. She also didn't have time to do something for herself because kids demanded a lot of time. Jane didn't even know if the kids were in school or not. Good if they were, but harder on Yang if they weren't.
"Well, let's go make you look amazing. By the time we're done, you're going to be the star of the night!" she said.

While Yang still felt slightly apprehensive, Jane was especially perky about the whole thing, and that made her feel better. She didn't know why she felt so nervous. She was going to a party, after all. Sure, it was a fancy schmancy one, but it was still a party, and she loved stuff like that. And from the looks of it, a lot of her friends would be there too. She was just overthinking, again. She felt like she had been doing that a lot lately, and it was getting on her nerves.
"I do like being in the spotlight," she agreed as she headed inside the shop. She was instantly greeted by the sound of a cheesy pop song being played above her head, and the array of clothes on the racks. "We have to make sure you look fabulous too," she said as she looked back at Jane. "I can't be the only one looking gorgeous."

"See?" she insisted. "We're going to be the best looking there."
The store was a bit silly, what with the music playing in the background and overly flamboyant ball gowns on mannequins. But that was just how it was. Jane stepped over to the racks, perusing the wares. She didn't have too many dresses, probably not too many elegant enough for a ball. Coloring was always difficult to get right.
"So... What color do you want?" she asked.

"Hmm..." Yang looked around for a moment. It seemed like there was a dress in nearly every color of the rainbow. She had to keep reminding herself that she was trying to pick something depending on whether it would look good on her, not whether it would be useful or not. That was how she did most of her shopping for clothes these days. If it would keep her kids warm, or it was comfortable, then she would get it, no matter what it looked like. "How about we start with these red ones?" she asked, pointing at a small section of dresses that were various shades of red.

"Red it is then!" Jane said.
She stepped over to the many shades of red. Ball gowns didn't seem Jane's thing. Too much fabric, lots of fluff and stuff. It made it hard to move about and she couldn't run if she had to. Then again, short dresses were often revealing, even showing more skin than should be shown. Literally leaving nothing to the imagination. Yang was comfortable in her body, but it might leave people with the wrong impression of the young caregiver and reputation was a lot when you looked after others.
"Long dress or short?" Jane asked.

Yang glanced at the dresses for a moment longer before replying. "Short. Otherwise, I'm gonna be tripping over my dress the whole evening," she replied. "Besides, if I get a nice pair of shoes, I want people to see 'em." She gave a smile before a dress finally caught her eye. "Ooo, check out this one," she said, pulling it off the rack to show Jane. It was short, just covering Yang's knees. It had a lot of sparkles, and some black to go with it. "You'd probably knock a lot of boys dead with this one," she said, winking in Jane's direction.

"Not unless dad knocks them dead first." Jane reminded her.
She considered the dress. Sparkles weren't really her thing. Especially those with sequins because they itched. She wasn't getting anything puffy or with oodles of skirts. Maybe a log sleek dress. A simple pair of flats. Jane never did dress up often. She never really had the chance as a kid and when she got older it was more or less to spite her foster parents.
"I was thinking either green or blue?" She mused. "Do you like this one?"
She held up a short dress that had been gradient dyed. It started red at the top, faded to a light orange around the middle and ended with yellow at the bottom. Lace straps hung to the sides so they would hug her shoulders. A sweetheart neckline would hug her.

Yang had to laugh at that. Omar would probably do something like that. "Is he coming? We'll have to find some way to get him into a suit of some sort." That would be interesting, seeing Omar wearing a tie. Yang had never seen him wear one before. His wardrobe usually consisted of faded T-shirts and jeans, some of which had holes in them. That seemed to be the typical wardrobe of a rock band member. "Green or blue would look nice on you, though. It'd totally bring out your eyes," she said as Jane picked out another dress, which looked pretty nice. The way the colors combined actually looked like a flame. "Heh. With this one, I'd be wearing flames instead of shooting them," she said, running a hand through the material. "Let's keep this as a 'maybe,'" she said as she took it and hung it over her arm. "We'll check out some of the other ones and see if any catch our eye. Then, once we get a couple, we can narrow it down." That sounded like a good plan, in her mind. After all, it felt a little weird, just picking one dress then heading back out in, like, five minutes. Didn't girls usually take a long time when shopping? That's how it was in the movies, at least.

"No clue but he would so fight us on the suit thing. I don't even think my mom was able to get him to wear something other than band t-shirts and jeans." she said.
But then again, Jane didn't quite remember what her father wore when she was younger. They had been apart for so long. His wardrobe had to change a little bit, right? Jane brushed the thought aside as she nodded. She picked up a dress that might suit her a little better. Long, slim, one strap for the right hand shoulder. Normally her shopping trips were unbearably boring. She hated going out to find clothes. Maybe it was because she had company this time. They did say things were better with friends. Yang was her first friend in the big city.
"Sounds like a good plan to me," she said. "Personally I think the masks will be much more fun to pick."

"I bet you could convince him to do it," Yang said. "He loves you to pieces." Omar would probably wear a tux if his "little girl" asked him to do it. She glanced over at the other dresses, looking until another one caught her eye. "Ooo, I like this one," she said, pulling out a white dress that had lace, plus a little bit of glitter just to give it some shine. And it was sure to fit Yang's curves just right. "Can't remember the last time I wore anything white, though. Hope it doesn't stain too easily."

"Yeah and he'd probably whine and complain the whole time. No thanks!" Jane laughed. "Besides, he wouldn't be comfortable and I can't do that to him."
Jane smiled. It was a very pretty dress. Jane hadn't expected Yang to pick something like that for herself but she was certainly glad that Yang was going out on a limb to try something new. The white would attract attention, especially in a crowd, but it would look dazzling, especially with the shimmers under a light. If they did her hair up and the mask, no one would even recognize her.
"It'll be fine," Jane insisted. "That's why they made tide-sticks. Those remove stains like nobody's business."

"Whatever you say," Yang said. Jane did have a good point though. If Omar had to wear any kind of suit and tie, he'd gripe about it the whole time. She wondered if there was actually a dress code for this ball. She knew some school's proms had one. She nodded at Jane's mention of tide-sticks. Those were pretty handy sometimes at getting out stains. She'd have to pick some up sometime. "Let's see...let's pick one more..." She glanced around the racks one more time, figuring a total of three dresses was enough to choose from. "I think this'll be option #3," she said, reaching over to pick a light blue dress of a hanger.
