“See? And here I thought you would take forever picking,” Jane said. “Let’s go to the changing room and try them on.” She motioned for Yang to follow her. Yang had been a bit more successful than Jane, but worse come to worse, Jane would just wear one she already had. She did have a few she saved for occasions like this. Her last foster mother adored big parties. She had tried to get Jane to adore them too but Jane much rather prefer the quiet and solace of a good book, curled up with her pjs and a pint of ice cream. But that was the past. She had left that foster family quite quickly when they realized she wouldn’t conform to their ideal cookie cutter ‘daughter’ model. “Have you heard from dad?” she asked. “Is he going?”

"Nah, I'm not one of those girls that takes, like, two hours to get shopping done," Yang said. Although, to be honest, Yang wasn't like most girls in a lot of areas. Even before she had lived on the streets, she was going against the grain. It was just part of her personality. "Haven't heard a for sure 'yes' or 'no,'" Yang replied. "It'd be cool if he did, but I guess I can see why he wouldn't." Fancy parties were kind of the opposite of Omar. Yang wasn't the hugest fan of them, but she figured it'd be fun to hang out with friends and play dress-up for a bit, even if did have to ask Jane to help pay for it. She slipped on the blue dress first, looking herself in the mirror for a moment before stepping out of her dressing room. "Jane, what do you think?" she asked. The blue was a nice color, but it just didn't feel totally right. Maybe it was because she tended to wear warmer colors than cool ones.

"Didn't think you would be. You're just naturally pretty so you don't have to work at it." Jane said.
Yang was pretty in that sort of tough girl way of hers. Beautiful but subtly dangerous. Jane had heard rumors. Who didn't in a city of gossip like this? Yang was more than met the eye and was more than capable of taking on anyone who got in her way.
"I'd love it if he got to play but I doubt that whatever high society hag is throwing this one has cultured taste for anything aside from classical."
She would have loved to see her father play. Not to mention it would have been good publicity for the band, minus the police presence. It would have been a good payout too. Money was always good. She just hoped things would pick up for her old man.
She shook her head. The blue seemed to clash. It was such a gentle color too, but it didn't seem to suit Yang. At least they had options.
"Yeah, you don't look comfortable in it either. Try on the next one?" Jane suggested.

"Hey, you're pretty too," Yang said. "Don't sell yourself short." Jane might look plain to others, but Yang felt like her kindness was what made her shine. Who wouldn't love a girl that was as nice as her? She did have to laugh at the mental image of Omar playing some heavy metal song at the party. "That would be kind of hilarious though," she said. "I bet some of these people have never heard heavy metal in their life." Pulling something like that would probably get Omar thrown out, though. Still, it was funny to think about. Jane seemed to agree with her on the blue dress, so as soon as she stepped back inside her dressing room, she tossed it aside and put on the fire-y one instead. It fit her a bit better, but she still wondered if wearing flames was too cliche, since she had fire powers and all. "I wonder if people would be too intimidated by a walking flame," she said as she glanced at Jane.

"Oh I would so record it if he did that," Jane laughed. "He would make their brains melt."
Jane liked her dad's music, which probably struck people as weird because she tended to do more quiet activities like reading or studying. But what else was there for a half troll like her to do? She had to have something to take her mind off things as a kid. She just happened to do well in school.
"Mmm..." Jane hummed. "Guess that one went up in smoke?"
Jane grinned over her joke. She would probably crack a few more if Yang actually wore the dress. So maybe not that one either. That being said, they still had the fall back dress. White. Plain. Simple. Cute. Jane didn't get a good look at it when Yang grabbed it but she hoped the third time was a charm.

Yang had to laugh at Jane's pun. It was pretty funny. There was still one more dress to try on though. Yang grabbed the white dress and slipped on. As soon as she looked in the reflection, she knew this was the dress for her. Sure, some might see white as a boring color. But this one still had a bit of shimmer, which Yang always loved. And it showed off her curves perfectly. "This one fits me like a glove," she said with a grin. "I'm getting it." After changing back into her regular clothes, she turned to Jane and said "Okay, you're next. Let's check out the ones you got."

"Ha! Score!" Jane laughed. "It looks great on you!"
White. Normally associated with innocence. It looked oddly good on Yang. It was also a reminder of how young Yang really was. She might act like an older mother of four but she was still just a kid. Jane was so glad that Yang was going to go to the party. She would have pulled all the strings to make sure Yang could go if she tried to put up a fight. She was already going to try to see if Yang would let the kids stay over at her apartment, hook them up with a pizza, ice cream and her Netflix account and they would be golden.
"Okay, okay," Jane laughed. "But if these don't work I'll wear a dress I already have."
She slipped into the stall that Yang just left to try on a green dress, strapless and plain.

Yang was happy to see that Jane agreed with her. White was usually assorted with angelic and pure stuff, everything Yang wasn't. Maybe that was why she liked it. It was ironic. Or maybe she just liked how good she looked in it. Either was a plausible reason. She just hoped Jane could afford to get herself a new dress, plus the one Yang wanted.

Jane stepped out of the changing room. She liked the dress well enough. It was a dark emerald green, like the forest. Very earthy in tone. She smiled. She could find something nice to go with this. She could already figure out something to do with her hair. Dressing up was easy. Playing the part was something else entirely.
"So, you up for lunch after this?" Jane asked. "Or you want to soldier on for shoes?"

Yang gave a gasp when she saw Jane in the emerald-colored dress. It looked so pretty on her. Green was definitely Jane's color. "Oh, you look gorgeous!" she exclaimed happily. It looked like their dress hunt had been successful. When asked if she wanted to take a lunch break or look for shoes, Yang instantly replied with "Let's do shoes first. Once we get our outfits complete, we'll be able to chow down with ease."

"Then I guess this one's my ringer," Jane laughed. "So shoes and then grub."
She went back into the changing room to change back. She set her unwanted dresses on the rack and kept the green dress in hand. She was having fun. A lot of fun actually. It was her first real, girl's night with a friend. Yang was her first real friend. So that counted for something. She just hoped Yang was enjoying herself as much as she was.
"I'm wearing flats with these," she admitted. "I've got a perfect pair at home that I got last week, but let's see what they've got for you."

"Yeah. All I've got are sneakers and boots." Those were usually the most comfortable, and they kept Yang's feet warm during the colder months. Not that Louisiana was a freezer, but still. It could get down to the 40's sometimes at night during winter. She spotted a shoe rack near the back of the store. "Hmm, we could go for more white," she said. "Or silver." Silver and white always went well together.

"You don't strike me as a heels sort of girl. So maybe something low rise?" Jane suggested.
She knew she was clumsy when she was in heels. So she wouldn't force that on Yang. That would be a cruel and unusual punishment for the tomboy. But they also needed something that could be used again if Yang chose to, something casual, but still dressy. That way it could be used in Yang's day to day life. Not just for the party. Who knows how many parties there would be in the future?

"Hmm, a short heel would be a lot easier to walk in," Yang agreed. The last thing she wanted was to trip and fall on her face. Or get blisters. She ducked down low when she spotted two pairs of shoes next to each other. One was labeled grey, the other silver. Yang's brow furrowed. "Is there much of a difference between grey and silver?" she asked, looking up at Jane.

"That's the thought," Jane said. "No clue. All I know is that silver sparkles. besides, at the end of the night, women tend to kick their shoes off anyway."
As long as Yang was happy with what she had to wear, that was all that mattered. Jane couldn't tell the difference between the two pairs of shoes. The variation was so subtle that she couldn't pin point it exactly. Though to be fair, Jane preferred to bum her way through life in a shirt and pants. Designer anything was not in her vocabulary.
