"A beryl?" Weiss looked up at that. A little rock was supposed to be good against demons? It almost sounded ridiculous, and it was a bit different from the typical holy water/crosses combination that people typically used when fighting demons. Weiss's family wasn't the religious type, but you couldn't deny that stuff like that had an effect on some dangerous creatures.

Elsa nodded. "Something about their blood reacts to it. Emerald fatally wounds them, aquamarine...it isn't pretty..." She looked down, sighing shakily to prevent any tears from welling up. She had just had this conversation with Anna, over someone who had been a demon, killed by an emerald bullet. People usually assumed what they saw in exorcism movies was how the BPD expelled demons. Exorcism was only half of the deal. Demons could be coaxed out using flattery, and well, holy water did have beryl in it, so ticking it off by splashing it with a substance similar to acid to them helped. Actually killing the demon was the harder part.

Elsa seemed...well, Weiss didn't know how to put it. Sad? Scared? She wasn't sure. Personally though, she was intrigued by all this. "Guess I'll have to make a trip to the jewelry store sometime," she said, more to herself than Elsa. Her mother would probably find it pretty convenient that the thing that could hurt demons the most could be worn as an accessory. She just hoped her mother would prioritize them over her rubies, which she usually wore when fall arrived. She liked to coordinate things like that.

Elsa smiled serenely. The Lafayettes could probably afford a ton of beyrl jewelry to supply their security with. If they paid manufacturers who helped the Others Unit enough, they could get advice on how to create bullets.
"Really, that's the only demon hunting," she used air quotes around 'hunting' "advice I have. Unless you want to talk about other things."

Weiss sipped her coffee for a moment as she thought. Knowing that beryls were a weakness to these demons certainly made her feel a little better. She just wished she could try it out herself. She still felt ashamed, that Thrax had gotten the best of her so easily. She wanted a rematch, despite the fact that he had a lot more power than she did. But rather than be intimidated by the challenge, Weiss faced it head-on. That was just how she was. "I just can't get over how crazy this demon is," she said. "You'd think a classier criminal would show a little more caution." Thrax had been ready to take down anyone that was in his way. It was only when his chances of winning grew very slim that he decided to run.

"Unfortunately for some, the spotlight is too tempting," Elsa mused. She sipped her own coffee. The determination in Weiss was a side of the young girl she had never seen. It was a side she appreciated but at the same time worried her. There was being able to fight, but then there was. "It can turn the most elegant of lawbreakers into fools."

Weiss sighed. "Seems like he made the rest of us look like fools too," she commented. "Do you know if there's been any progress on figuring out who helped him?" That was the other juicy bit of the story that reporters had been commenting on lately. In addition to the fact that Thrax had trashed the party, it looked like he hadn't been acting alone. The question was, who had helped him? The mob? A friend of his? Somebody he had made an temporary alliance with? The possibilities were endless, which made finding the answer even more difficult.

"They say some fellow by the name of Vanitas," Elsa answered. She hD listened in on the day the cops got security from the Lafayettes. Technology could do so many wonders. By comparing the frequency of a portal from a previous case - a case involving the snakeskin from a voodoo priestess - the cops were able to pinpoint who caused it. Her face fell. She was giving way confidential evidence, and other lawyers AND the BPD wouldn't appreciate it. That, and Vanitas' lawyers always found a way to weasel him out

"Vanitas?" Weiss had never heard of him before. Then again, news about criminals hadn't really interested her in the past, especially after Riku left. The idea of seeing his name in the paper had brought about a whole well of unpleasant emotions. Maybe it's time I change that, she thought. For a long time, the only world she lived in was her rich lifestyle, where she tried to pretend that everything was perfect. Maybe it was time for her to reach out beyond that and pay attention to what was happening to other people for once.

Elsa sipped her coffee again. Really, talking about the big vases was the police's job, not hers. "I'm just finding comfort that somehow Thrax will have to make up the deed. It's a sort of...code demons practice." She had seen it many years. There may have been an awkwardness among the creatures, but there was a sort of mutual respect as well. "Wait. Your brother is on the force..." she realized, setting her cup down. "I'm surprised he hasn't told you what has been going on."

"Oh, right." Demons were fickle like that. They hated owing anybody anything. Thrax was going to have to pay Vanitas back someday for saving his butt. Weiss just wondered what Vanitas would want from him. Elsa soon mentioned her brother though, and Weiss's mouth tightened into a thin line. "We don't talk that much anymore," she said, almost coldly. The last time they had spoken was at the Nevermore Coffee House and Bakery sometime before the ball, and it hadn't been a pleasant talk. Riku was bitter towards their parents, and Weiss was bitter towards him. She knew she was being stubborn, but she just couldn't shake off the feeling that he had abandoned her and chosen his job over her. It confused her even more so when she felt relief that he hadn't shown up at the ball. Who knew what might have happened to him.

"I understand you two have your differences, but right now he is the closest thing to the force you have. I don't like working with certain lawyers...don't get me started on Claude Frollo." Her own lips fell into a thin line, not unlike Weiss. But the difference with that was frost was collecting on the edge of her coffee mug. When she was on edge, this frosting happened. It didn't spread much after much practice on self control, but the ice evidence was still there. She made a quick sigh. "The point is, I wish I could tell you more, but confidence in a case must be treated with care."

Weiss's brow furrowed. Was Elsa really suggesting that she go to Riku about this? She wasn't sure if he would even talk to her. Besides, this information seemed pretty classified. She would probably have to get on his good side if she wanted to hear any of it, and she refused to stoop down so low. Speaking of people they weren't on good terms with, Elsa seemed to get icy just mentioning Frollo's name, literally. "Has he been a jerk lately?" she asked. Sure, people supported him, but she knew a lot of other people didn't. You either loved or hated the guy.

Like a frost on a hot day in Louisiana, the ice thawed into nothingness. Elsa's face relaxed into a softer, if not still frustrated, expression. Weiss' diversion of the topic into something that wouldn't turn the sitting room into an ice chamber was best. "In a way," she answered. "He wants to revoke some of the rights given to Others. He says far too much freedom allows for more accidents."

"Typical," Weiss scoffed. Frollo tended to take that stance a lot. No doubt he was going to have a field day with this Thrax incident. Weiss's opinion of the guy tended to be negative. Sure, he had a lot of influence, but his opinion of dark supernatural creatures tended to rub off on her the wrong way. Voodoo often dealt with the dark side of things all the time. There was no fear in it if you understood it.
