Vanitas was beyond cross. His last few encounters with well anyone had gone the opposite of how he anticipated. That officer blinded him. Moses seemed to think he was a 'good' guy. He had been arrested by that stupid Faery. A demon interrogated him. That dumb troll probably thought he could get away with another bar fight with him. Needless to say, Vanitas felt like he was losing his touch. Too many things were out of his control.
Naturally this left him in a foul mood as he prowled the streets. Most people avoided him on principle. No one wanted to get involved in any sort of confrontation with a demon like him. However the streets were mostly bare except for a young woman. Walking alone in the darkness.

Adeline sighed as she adjusted the book she carried in her arms. She shouldn't have stayed at the library so late. Her parents were already worried about her being out on her own. They probably didn't feel any better about her being by herself at night. But, Adeline had assured them that she would be fine. She knew the streets here like the back of her hand. Well, most of them at least. She wasn't the savviest person in the world when it came to street smarts, but she had grown up here. She felt like that counted for something, at least. However, she couldn't deny the uneasy feeling she got when she realized that she was the only person on the street. She hugged the book a little closer to her chest, like it was some kind of shield that would protect her. But, she wasn't alone for long. Somebody else was apparently out walking this late. However, the uneasy feeling in Adeline's stomach didn't go away. If anything, it got worse. She narrowed her eyes. She didn't like this.

Under normal circumstances, Vanitas would have just scared the girl off. Shadows lurking after her, darkness making her see things that weren't there, or just looming after her ominously. It would have put him in a better mood to scare the girl running. But this girl wasn't something usual. Vanitas walked over to her. She was different. There was a sort of magic that lingered about her that was Otherly. Namely demon. A magic lingered around her from a demon that he had only encountered once. A demon he would very much like to talk to since he had done the other a favor. Vanitas did not throw out favors on a whim.
"You!" he accused.

Adeline jumped in surprise. Not just at the accusatory tone the man used to address her, but from the vibe she got from him. Even though she hadn't met him before, she would know a demon when she saw one. She had part of one inside her, after all. This guy wasn't just dark though. He was angry. And for some reason, Adeline felt like he was mad at her, although she had no idea why. "W-what?" was all she could stutter out.

Vanitas snorted. She was a fearful little mouse. She was probably one part flight and zero part fight. That pretty much summed up the look she was giving him. All he had to do was be intimidating. That almost took all of the fun out of it. He just had to bully her a little bit. He stopped, but only when there were a few feet between the two of them, but he was leaving her no room to run until he got the answers he wanted from her.
"Where's the demon?" he demanded.

Adeline took half a step back as the man approached her, like a tiger closing in on its prey. Running wasn't an option now. He'd catch her in a second. Besides, she didn't even know if she could do anything to him. This guy was strong. "I-I don't know what you're talking about," she said. She really didn't. There were probably lots of demons running around here. Who knew which one this guy was addressing? Was there a chance he knew Thrax? Or Pitch? Both seemed highly likely. Thrax was bound to make a few less-than-good friends while running around the city. And Pitch...well, Adeline didn't know that much about him, so anything was possible. Even with the reveal of the promise he had made, she still didn't exactly understand the circumstances leading up to it, or what he had done before becoming a member of the BPD.

"Don't play coy with me girl." Vanitas said.
It might have sounded like a sing-songy voice if not for the dark gleam in his eyes that promised nothing good for her. Vanitas didn't really care how he got his answers from her. His methods included threats before he broke down and just beat the answers out of people. He would almost have been tempted to take her soul but it wasn't 'marinated' enough. Besides, she was tainted with another demon's influence. Her soul wasn't worth consuming for that reason alone. It would taste awful.
"The one pulling your strings... he owes me." Vanitas hissed. "The demon from the ball."
If she made one more move to get away, he would restrain her. More carefully than he had with the police officer who threw voodoo dust into his eyes. That incident left him seething. It left him likely to take out those frustrations on this little witch. The fact she wasn't putting up much of a fight was also annoying. She had no sense of self preservation it seemed.

Adeline's head instantly snapped up at those words. There was no denying who this guy was asking for now. "Thrax? You know Thrax?" she asked. She wondered how they met. Were they working together? That definitely wouldn't be good. Thrax was dangerous enough on his own. Adeline didn't even want to imagine how much trouble he could cause if he had people working with him.

"Yes," Vanitas hissed. "How else do you think he got away from the cops?"
It wasn't until after he assisted Thrax, did Vanitas start having a bunch of problems. Someone went snooping through his hideout. He had to move to a new dump which was literally falling apart on him the longer he stayed there. He was blinded by a police officer, though he broke the brat's arm. But then there was that upstart demon halfing that kept trying to appeal to Vanitas' 'good' nature. That annoyed him to no end. Then there was this little mouse. Vanitas wanted nothing more than to beat her pretty little face in. It would show her a thing or two about hiding things from him. Then again, Thrax had left a mark on this one, tainting her. He would probably even know if she was 'damaged'.
"So I'll ask... one more time," he threatened. "Where is he?"

Adeline's eyes widened. "You? You...helped him?" This guy was the reason Thrax had managed to escape? Her stomach dropped. This was bad. If this guy and Thrax were working together, it could mean big trouble for her and anyone else they went up against. She swallowed, wondering how she could get out of this situation. She could already feel her demon side rising, responding to her fear. No, I can't let that happen, she thought. I've got to stay calm. I can't let this get out of hand. She sucked in a breath, trying to calm her racing heartbeat. It was already picking up speed. "I don't know where he is," she said. "I haven't seen him since the ball."

"What does he see in you?" Vanitas uttered.
The girl obviously didn't listen or she was extremely slow. He had just asked a simple question. Where was the demon that manipulated her? Hell, if she was smart enough with those powers of hers she could reverse track him. She was panicked and afraid. Good. She should be. At least someone in this city still had some sense left in their rotten heads. Maybe he should just kill her and be done with it. He hadn't actually done that in a while. It would really feel good to kill someone again. His fingers itched to get his hands on her.
"I don't believe you." he responded.

"I don't know, okay? I swear!" Adeline didn't know what she could do to convince this guy she was telling the truth. "Trust me, if I knew, I would have told the police about it or something." This city was like a maze sometimes, with its nooks and crannies. If Thrax was lying low, it would take a while to find him. Besides, the police force couldn't spend all their time on him and ignore their other cases, especially with the whole Sapien thing going on. With that drug being circulated, the members of the BPD were stretched pretty thin.

Vanitas sighed. Of course she didn't know. It couldn't ever be that easy, could it. He could not catch a break on anything it seemed. Oh well, he would have fun tormenting this one for just a little bit longer. This girl was a curious thing. Human with powers but with a demon stench. Now how did something like that come to be? He was a naturally curious creature. He didn't like what he didn't know about. Knowledge was power after all. He did like staying alive. So knowing things that were unusual kept him alive.
"You reek of demon." he said. "What happened? Make a deal over your head? Sell your soul away so that the star football player would like you? Did he promise you power?"

Adeline's eyes narrowed. "Why do you want to know?" she asked. Was this guy going to use this against her or what? She had no idea if she could tell him anything. He obviously didn't seem the trustworthy type. "Why are you so interested in Thrax anyway? Did you guys make a deal or something?" It was a possibility, in her mind. This guy helped Thrax get out of the ball alive, and now he had to do something in return. Adeline wasn't sure if Thrax would keep his promise though. The guy was the epitome of every lying, cheating, stealing criminal that lurked in this town.

"Because I like to know what the competition is up to," Vanitas replied.
The dim girl didn't even realize that there was a demon right in front of her. Oh well, her oversight was now his advantage. Normally his eyes gave him away. Other demons might have used this as their chance to have one human ally, but Vanitas had only survived as long as he had on the streets because he trusted no one. Perhaps this meek little mouse would learn the same lesson? He didn't really care if she did.
"There's nothing I hate more than when someone owes me," he continued. "I didn't help him out of the kindness of my heart... Maybe I should just take you as collateral."
Thrax was likely to show up if his pet project went missing. Or if it was damaged. Vanitas smirked. Going toe to toe with another demon would be fun. He hadn't done it in a while. Even more so since Pitch used his powers against him. Just thinking of Pitch got his blood boiling. He wanted nothing more than to make the other demon pay for what he had done.
