"Give it a little time," Vanitas said. "It's so easy to change these things."
He smiled wickedly. She was so easy to taunt, so easy to trigger. She made it too easy. He stepped out of her way as she lashed out and attacked. With her rage, she became sloppy. Her aim was off. He could feel the static of her magic burning the air around him. His hair was already spiky and on edge. If he were struck once, he would get a new hairdo at best. If this little witch had better control of her magic, then she could do some real damage with these spells of hers. She might even have killed someone. Maybe she would show no remorse. It'd be delightful.

No, no, no! The words kept repeating in Adeline's head. Or maybe she was saying them out loud? She wasn't sure anymore. Everything was red and all she could feel was anger and sadness and pain. Thrax had made her this way. It was all his fault. And Vanitas was no better. He had helped him. He was just as bad as him. She just kept letting out blast after blast, hoping one of them would hit Vanitas eventually.

Well that comment really egged her on. This time, Vanitas was unable to dodge out of the way in time. One of her little bursts of magic hit him square in the chest. He was thrown back onto the ground. Even has the pain surged through him, he laughed. If only she had put a bit more force behind the attack, it might have stopped his heart at least for a second. He lay on the filthy ground, sprawled out and laughing through the pain. She insisted she was not like a demon, that she was a good little human but she went and did something like this. Maybe if Thrax didn't make her into a demon, Vanitas would have to try his hand at it.

Adeline finally managed to lay a hit on Vanitas, sending him flying backwards. But instead of crying out in pain, he just laughed. What was it going to take to hurt this guy? It made Adeline furious, but as she tried to summon more magic power, she found that her legs were starting to tremble. What? Adeline was confused until she realized just how much energy she had spent. Unlocking her demon side, plus using so much magic power in a short amount of time, it was starting to drain her. Her anger had sapped away a good portion of her strength. "No, stop it!" she yelled, as if she could command her own body just by shouting at it. She wasn't going to stop now. She had finally hit him. She wanted to do it again.

Vanitas sat up when it seemed she had spent all of her energy hitting him the once. It was a pity. So much potential, so little magical stamina. He was just going to have to show her what a real demon could do. Real magic. He slowly got back to his feet, a grin lining his features. He looked up at her. He put a hand over his chest, trying to soothe the ache that her little burst of magic had caused. She was going to regret bumping into him. He would make sure of it.
"Are you done now?" he asked, like scolding a child.

Vanitas was back on his feet by this point, and while he seemed amused, Adeline knew better than to assume that he thought this situation was funny. This was a fight, after all, and it looked like it was his turn to strike back. "You wish!" Pushing her abilities forward, she summoned enough power to shoot one more blast. But almost immediately afterward, she fell to one knee, breathing heavily like she had just sprinted for a mile straight.

Vanitas' shadows blocked this last blast. He walked over to her. His shadows withered around him and swayed, almost protectively, only because of his whim, not because the shadows chose to protect him. He stopped as he stood looming over her. The little school girl exerted all of her energy just trying to hurt him. It was almost cute. But even as just a human, he could see that she had a blood lust in her eyes. She wanted him to suffer - to make him pay for mocking her. He shook his head before he started laughing. It was hilarious to see her try so hard but come so short of accomplishing what she wanted. It put him in a good mood to say the least.
"You're almost not even worth my time," he told her. "But I guess I might just keep you around."

Adeline glared at him, but she could feel her demon side slipping away now that her strength was fading. All that anger was disappearing, and was replaced with the fear she had felt earlier. She had lost control, and now she was paying for it. Come on, move! she thought to herself, trying to get her legs to move. She had to get out of here, or she was going to get seriously hurt. Or worse.

The look on her face was priceless. Anger to weariness to absolute panic. He knelt down in front of her, sneering down almost triumphantly. He considered striking her, but the fewer marks he left on her, the better. She would have no evidence to take to the police. The longer he stayed off their radar, the happier he would be. As much as he wanted to show her a demon's true potential, he also liked staying out of the jail cells. He would find her if she told anyone. It was what he did. He knew things about people. Finding out things about the shy school girl wouldn't be that hard.
"Tell Thrax to come find me," Vanitas said. "Or I'll come back and finish the job."
He tapped her across the cheek with the tips of his fingers and got back to his feet. He dusted himself off, smirking. Then he turned on his heel and started to walk away, whistling a merry little tune. Yes, the fear on her face was just enough to make his evening.

Vanitas certainly seemed to enjoy the fear that was slowly growing in Adeline. However, instead of striking back, he only left a warning. And it was one that chilled her to the bone. After that, he simply walked away. Once he was out of sight, all the adrenaline, fear, and anger Adeline had been feeling finally wore off. Her eyes dimmed down, reverting back to their original color. Then, they rolled into the back of her head as she promptly passed out. She would stay that way until morning, when her parents finally found her. Even though they asked a lot of questions, she couldn't say a word. The whole experience had frightened her terribly. She would need time to recover.
