"Like I said, better safe than sorry." he reassured her. "Now, what you need to do is get yourself an emerald weapon. Or at least an emerald necklace. Hurts us something fierce."
The girl would be better off with some form of defense with a weapon. The emerald would really hurt whatever demon was after her. Not to mention the good police officers in this city that actually cared about what happened instead of the corrupt officers that used and abused the system. She just needed a direct line to the ones that actually wanted to help her.

"I don't know...how well that would work," Adeline said, hesitating with her words slightly. If emeralds hurt demons, would they hurt her too? She was kind of one, in a way. It was like telling a vampire to protect itself from other vampires with holy water. Truthfully though, she hadn't really tested it yet. She had been more focused on taming the demon inside her than finding ways to protect herself from Thrax, or other demons that might want to mess with her. Maybe she should devote some time to that. Her mother had once been pretty good at using spells that required precious stones and crystals. She could hunt through them and see if any of them gave her, like, a major headache or something.

"Emerald powder?" he suggested. "Or a vial of liquid emerald? I could even melt it down for you.
The liquid form could be dumped in someone's face or used like mace. The emerald spray would act like super intense demon pepperspray. It would be ground up and all she had to do was blow it in the demon's face. But if she didn't want to, he wouldn't press the issue. He was also giving her a way to hurt him, but he could take emerald, even if it hurt like Hell. He would have felt bad if he left some girl on the streets unprotected or something.
"Do you have a friend or anyone you can call if you see one of these other demons?"

Maybe having an emerald liquefied could work. Adeline wouldn't even have to touch it if it was in that state. Just splash it on someone and boom. She was good to go. "Maybe i should put it in a water gun or something," she joked. She doubted something like that would work, but it was funny to think about. Although, Axel's offer to melt one down for her made her raise an eyebrow. "You just happen to have some emeralds lying around?" she asked. That seemed a little weird. Emeralds were precious stones, after all. They weren't exactly easy to come by.
"Yeah, but there's usually not much he can do," Adeline replied. "It's like, they always find me at the right moment, when any help that tries to show up arrives too late. I must be like a beacon to them or something." It was frustrating, to say the least. But the last thing Adeline wanted was for extreme measures to be taken, like getting her a bodyguard or putting her through the witness protection program or something. She had a life to live, after all. It may be one that she wasn't prepared for, but she wanted to live it, and being cooped up inside all the time wasn't going to help her with that.

"I don't necessarily have any on me, but I can make things hot enough to melt."
He hadn't used his fire powers in a while, but it was for a good cause. He would appreciate using his fire again. It was a win-win for both of them. But he kept his calm. The water gun might be a bit ridiculous for her to carry around all of the time, but that was her choice. He was pretty sure they could just put it in a pepperspray can or something. She was a sweet girl. He didn't want her to believe that she was a prime target for these deplorable creatures.
"You could always get someone to escort you from place to place." he said. "Someone that can fight fire with fire. What about that other 'good demon' of yours?"
He might have offered himself but he didn't know how she felt about some stranger walking her around. Might as well as be her friend, the one she knew or someone else she trusted. There was power in numbers. Demons were less inclined to attack groups unless they were supremely certain of their strength and in Axel's opinion overrated in their arrogance.

"He's a cop. He probably has enough on his plate already without worrying about babysitting me," Adeline replied. She wasn't sure how fond Pitch would be of that idea, tagging along after her everywhere she went. Sure, the two were friends, but she doubted he wanted to spend that much time with her. He was an adult, after all. He probably had other things to do than hang out with her. Besides, it seemed like the cops were getting loaded with more cases every day. Vanitas was a current case, then there was the whole Sapien drug crisis. No, Pitch had enough to worry about right now. She didn't want to become a burden to him.

"Then I guess that leaves me," he said. "If you're up for it, kid."
He could be intimidating enough, he supposed. Scare away your average offender with just a look. The non-average were easy to frighten by a sheer force of will. Scaring another demon off was a little harder but they often retreated due to not wanting to get burned by him. They would probably fight to a standstill or at least long enough until the police got involved. Axel was a fighter. He couldn't just let someone bully this girl into meekness. She was a fighter for sure, even if she had been terrified of him.

Adeline blinked. Axel was willing to follow her around just like that? He barely knew her, and vice versa. "Why do you want to help me?" she asked. "I haven't exactly done anything for you." Heck, she had treated him like a criminal not too long ago, braced for a fight and accusing him of wanting to hurt her in some way. That wasn't exactly a very good first impression.

"I don't like bullies." Axel shrugged. "Besides, demons who hurt others like that only piss me off."
It's why he had a record. But he also changed himself so that he no longer did those things without rhyme or reason. A good reason would be to protect a young girl from another demon. She didn't deserve to be a target. Honestly, he didn't know how a shy little thing like her could even end up on a demon's radar. If the police couldn't step up for her, the least he could do was walk her to and from school or work or home or whatever it is that teenage girls did these days. He didn't know what all her schedule consisted of.

Adeline sighed. "I don't know how you'd do against these guys," she said. "Vanitas has always managed to escape from the cops. And Thrax? He got away from a room chock full of people. And nobody's seen him since." It scared her, just thinking about it. Thrax was out there somewhere, waiting to make his next move, and Adeline had no idea what it was or when it would happen. But if it was anything like what happened at the LaFayette's ball, she knew it would be terrible.

"Demon versus demon is a little bit more fair." Axel said. "Unless you'd rather be alone when they come at you again."
They both knew that wasn't the case. She was terrified of demons because of those two. Those demons had literally struck fear into her very core. Axel really did want to see her safe. In his opinion, the kid was far too nervous for her own good. She was going to fret herself into an early grave at this rate. It was a little low for him to play on her fears of being alone when one or both of those demons came back.
"Or you can find a friend or something?" he offered.

Adeline sighed. Axel seemed pretty dead-set on this idea. She appreciated the gesture, truly. But she wasn't sure if having someone tagging along with her all the time was the right solution. "I can't depend on other people to look out for me forever. I have to learn how to do this on my own eventually. I want to..." She paused, trying to find the right words to describe how she was feeling. "I got myself into this mess in the first place. I want to be able to get myself out of it. I want to be strong enough that I can face them on my own." That was why she was training so hard with Pitch. She had to get this demon side of hers under control, and be able to stand up to people like Vanitas and Thrax in the future. Otherwise, she was going to be some scared little girl for the rest of her life.

"Are you one of the gifted humans?" Axel asked. "Do you know self defense?"
She had to have something that made her look like an attractive target for demons. Whether sheer magical talent or if she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Twice just made her a bad luck magnet. He hoped she took his advice and got herself something emerald. It was expensive, but the right pawn shop would have it for a good price. Something that wouldn't break the bank. Kid like her, he doubted she made a lot at whatever job she had. If she had a job. She might have been too young for all he knew.
"Don't have to strike it out alone you know? But you do whatever." he said dismissively.

"I'm a witch. Or, at least I was. Now I'm just a..." Adeline sighed. She might as well give an explanation. Axel deserved that much, at least. "I summoned Thrax, because I was cocky and thought that since I was the brightest witch in my class, I could pull it off. But, everything went wrong, and he decided to put a piece of himself inside me." Her fingers tightened around her mug. "That's why I have to learn how to face him, and Vanitas, by myself. I can't let them intimidate me anymore. It's just going to feed this demon side of me if I keep feeling scared or angry whenever they're around." She glanced up at Axel, hoping he understood. Help was good and all, but when it came to facing people like Thrax and Vanitas, she had to be strong enough to do it herself one day. She couldn't just sit around and hope that Axel or Pitch would protect her.

"Geeze..." Axel breathed. "If you were a bit older I'd offer you something a little harder than that."
He motioned to her tea. He would lose his job if he offered a hard drink to a minor, but if anyone had earned one it was her. But the day she turned twenty one and if he was still working there at the time, he would give her a drink on the house. Still, this only fueled his disgust for Thrax. The kid hadn't asked for what Thrax had done to her. He just did it simply because he had the ability to. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He had to keep his calm. Couldn't go starting fires.
"You... could always try an exorcism but they're dangerous. You'd really have to find someone who knew their shit." he said. "Otherwise it'd kill you."
