Yang awoke in the middle of the night, shooting up into a sitting position as she gasped for breath. It took her mind a moment to realize that Thrax had just been in her nightmare, and she was still at the hospital, safe and sound. At least, that was what everybody was telling her. Yang wasn't so sure though. She couldn't help but feel like Thrax would come back for her, finish what he had started. She swallowed as she buried her head between her knees, her right arm hanging uselessly by her side.
The doctors had said she was lucky to pull through, that maybe her phoenix side had kicked in to save her. Yang didn't agree with them. What kind of luck could a person like her have? Everything she did just made things worse. She just wanted to keep her bad luck to herself and not affect anyone else with it. She looked up, wondering if there was any point in going back to sleep, when her eyes caught a figure inside her room. She couldn't see who it was, but her mind immediately assumed the worst, and her adrenaline spiked. "Stay back or your face gets burned!" she threatened, stumbling to her feet. Her left hand sparked as she struggled to get some kind of intimidating flame going.

Chat had been helping the police with the riots when he heard over the radio what happened. Yang... Her arm had been cut off by Thrax. Distressed and confused, going on two days of no sleep since the riots went out and still in his black suit and mask, he had run to the hospital. Once he realized his appearance, he knew he couldn't just walk in the front door, because there were still some police officers that would arrest him on the spot and they were likely to be guarding Yang's door, he went up the side of the building, climbing in through a window. He was hot, uncomfortable, sweaty and he probably smelled of heaven knows what from the riots and the grave yard...
He sat silently for nearly an hour, sitting vigil near her bedside. This was his fault. Thrax had busted Emerald out of jail. Emerald worked for Cinder. Cinder had gone after Yang. If he hadn't gotten Yang involved in any of this... she might still have had her arm.
He jolted when she jacked into a sitting position, gasping as if she had been running a marathon. A nightmare. One he couldn't save her from. But she caught sight of him, threatening him, the way she had the first time they met. He could already hear her heart rate monitor beeping like crazy and if the hospital staff heard it, he would be caught.
"Yang, it's okay. It's just a dream." he whispered softly, trying to make her think this was just a continuation of such.

Yang blinked, trying to see clearly. The black suit...the ears...that voice...her eyes widened. "Chat?" The word came out soft and full of disbelief. Was she still dreaming? She felt like she wasn't. Then again, she felt unsure about a lot of things these days. But she felt like if she was dreaming, Thrax would be here. He always tended to make an appearance. "What are you doing here?" she asked Chat as she turned back to him. Dream or not, she felt like that was a legitimate question. Chat had practically sworn to stay away from her until Cinder was dealt with. Why was he here?

Chat bit his lip. What was he doing there indeed? He had been the one to leave her. It was supposed to be for her safety but now... He wasn't sure if that was a good thing either. But nothing was simple. His dual identities clashed with one another. Adrien - the media perfect super model who no one knew was an Other - would never have been allowed to be around Yang. His father would have snubbed her and deemed her a bad influence following a restraining order to keep Adrien from her. Then Chat Noir - the Other who had fallen for her utterly and completely - was wanted by the police and would be arrested on the spot. Neither would have been good for her.
"I heard about what happened and I just... I had to see you." he said. "I just had to see you were still-"
Still alive. As soon as he heard on the radios that Yang was being taken to the hospital, his mind went blank. Nothing else mattered except for getting to the hospital to see her but she had a slew of visitors. He had to wait. Then, she was a sleep. He didn't dare wake her when she looked like she needed the sleep. He looked down at his hands. He had apparently lost one of his gloves and his suit was torn near his collar. Nothing that couldn't be fixed. He would live. So would Yang.

Yang's eyes narrowed, and her hand clenched into a fist. Seriously? Chat decided to see her now, of all times? "So, you decided to pay your respects to the cripple? Is that it?" she asked, her voice bitter. The last time Chat had seen her, she had been pretty happy with herself. She could fight. She was open to those around her. Now...now she felt like nothing. A piece of her had been taken away. And he wanted to see her now, five months later, when she was like this. The whole thing made her feel angry beyond belief.

"It's not like that!" Adrien shot back. "When I heard... I thought... I was so scared for you Yang."
He smoothed a hand through his hair and one of his ears from his costume came off, falling into his hand. He shook his head and stuffed it into one of the pockets his outfit had. He crossed his arms over his chest. He almost lost Yang. Again. He truly was nothing but bad luck to anyone he crossed paths with. His ungloved hand went to his mask. The adhesive to the leather was wearing thin from how much he had been sweating and how long he had been wearing it. He was tired and sore and scared. He had been so scared. Even now, his hands were shaking from the adrenaline that had been surging through his system when he found out that Yang had been hurt.
"All I heard was you were being taken to the hospital for serious injuries. I didn't know if you were alive or dead." he said. "And despite what you think, I care about what happens to you, Yang."

Chat's words just made Yang angrier. "You care? Seriously?" Her voice rose as her frustration finally bottled over. "You sure have a funny way of caring, Chat Noir. I don't hear from you for, what, five months? And then you show up out of the blue, when I'm like this?" She gestured angrily to what was left of her right arm. "Well guess what? I don't need your caring!" She gave Chat a shove. "I don't need your sympathy!" She shoved him again. "And I don't need you!" Her fist swung forward, knocking into the side of Chat's face. There was a moment of silence, then a clattering sound as Chat's mask fell to the floor.

She pushed him once. Then twice. He honestly wasn't surprised. He deserved it. It still didn't stop him from glancing to the door to make sure some orderly didn't see them fighting. But then she hit him. Quite soundly. He grunted from the force. His mask fell to the floor with a clatter. His eyes widened in mute horror as he stared at the mask. Bare. His face was bare.
At first the only thing going through his head was panic. She could see him. As who he was and who he pretended to be. It was hard to determine which was which. He wanted to run, hide his face before she saw, but he knew nothing good came from him running. He stood his ground, hardened his resolve and met her gaze with his own.
"I left because I thought if Cinder thought you weren't important to me, you wouldn't get hurt. I don't expect you to forgive me," he said. "But you are - were... my only friend..."

Yang slowly looked up, and her eyes widened. Staring back at her, was Adrien Agreste. She took a step back. This was who Chat really was? Pretty-boy, wishy-washy, rich kid Adrien? Yang heard him talking, but the words didn't really register in her mind. Her brain was too busy trying to figure out how this could be. But, in a way, she was just in denial of what was in front of her. Her mind could already make the connections. She had always felt like Chat and Adrien looked similar. And Adrien's talk of how controlling his father was reminded her of Chat saying he felt trapped, like he was in a cage. But Yang didn't want to accept this. Adrien was nice and all, but being Chat Noir? Her very own Robin Hood? The boy she had fallen in love with? It felt impossible. "No, no, no, no..." Yang's hospital bed squeaked slightly as she sat down on it, holding her head in her hand.

"Yang?" he asked softly.
He fought back his own urge to run. She wasn't taking this well. He never thought she would, but her complete and utter denial like this hurt more than her punch, which hurt. His cheek was still stinging sharply. He reached out to touch her but at the last second his hands jerked back. She wouldn't want him to touch her. Despite how much he felt the need to just hug her and try to reassure her that he was the same as Adrien or as Chat.
"I'm... sorry." he whispered. "I'm probably not what you expected..."
And he knew he wasn't the person she wanted. He was a disappointment and he knew it. She probably had all these stories of Chat Noir - that he was some guy like her, that he was some cool super hero out of the comics. Not some rich brat with too much time on his hands. His hands dropped to his sides. He willed himself to stay strong, not to show weakness until he got out of the hospital room.

"Of course you're not!" Yang snapped. Her head jerked back up, tears stinging her eyes. But she refused to let them fall. She didn't want to break down and cry in front of Adrien. "You weren't supposed to be one of them! I thought..." Her voice shook as she fought to keep talking. "I thought you were like me." She felt like that was one of the reasons she had liked Chat so much right off the bat. She had felt like maybe, he was a street kid like her. Or if he wasn't, he was at least on the bottom rung, and knew what it was like to struggle to find a place to live, to fight for nearly every meal. But no. He lived in some fancy house where everything was done for him and he had never had to worry about anything. She felt like those at the top looked down on people like her. And Adrien belonged to that crowd. "Why the hell did you decide to start helping me out? Start helping out other people like me?" she asked. "Was it just some game to you? Thought it'd be fun to slap on a mask and be some renegade hero?"

One of them.
Now that hurt. She knew just what to say to hurt him. It was working too. He might have been from a different social class, but all the money his 'family' had didn't make him happy. Spending time with Yang, eating pizzas they ordered in or just talking, or just... Yang in general made him happy. And he blew it. Because he had too much money. It wasn't something he could control or pick...
"I might not... live life the way you did." he said. "I picked up the mask because... Adrien wasn't enough to make a difference. Things were so... messed up and I knew it but I couldn't fix them as Adrien. I helped you because - I wanted to."
It wasn't necessarily a lie. He did help her because wanted to. Wanted to spend more time with her. She made him feel like he was a person, instead of the 'puppet' being groomed by his father. Not to mention how corrupt things were. He gave money as Adrien, to all the right charities and all the right places. His father sneered at the gifts and had his accountants add them to tax write offs. His son the 'bleeding heart' he sneered. He recently had a financial adviser come in to put a stop to Adrien's donations. Because Adrien was 'costing the company' money.
"Everything I told you as Chat, was true. I didn't lie." he said. "Things with my dad suck. I don't have any friends because he constantly has me working or preparing to take over the company I don't want. I put on the mask so my father didn't recognize me. If he found out..."
If his father found out, he would be shipped off to 'rehab' or some other 'mental hospital' on a 'stay-cation'.

Yang didn't want to be swayed by Adrien's words, even though she could feel herself feeling some empathy. Putting on a mask so he could escape from the reality of his life...in a way, that was what Yang had done living on the streets. She had thrown herself into a world where she could do what she wanted and feel free, so she wouldn't have to deal with the pain of losing her parents to a corrupt police officer. She could feel her grip on her emotions slipping. Everything inside her felt angry and hurt and sad and she didn't know how to make herself feel better. "Well guess what pretty boy? There's no helping me now. Nobody can help me now. My arm is gone, and it's never coming back!" The words just slipped out at that point, and the weight of them seemed to crush Yang down. She was really like this, and she couldn't do anything to change it. The realization of it all finally made her grip on her emotions slip away, and the tears finally started to fall. She cried and cried and she didn't know how to stop. She had never felt so alone in all her life.

Adrien's hands clenched. There was something he could do. He just didn't think she would let him. He had money and he could finally use it for a good cause but with this father's financial adviser blocking him, it would be harder to do than usual. For now, he was just going to have to take care of things one at a time. First off, Yang was hurting now...
"Yang," he breathed.
His heart clenched when she started to cry. This time, he didn't stop himself from pulling her into a hug. She could hate him as much as she wanted but she couldn't ask him to just sit by and do nothing as she hurt like this. He was already willing himself not to cry. The two of them crying would get nothing accomplished.
"Yeah, it's gone." he said. "And I'm so sorry it happened... But if you give up now, then that guy won. And I know you don't want that."

Yang didn't push away Adrien this time, and instead leaned into his touch as she felt his arms wrap around her. She didn't want to be alone right now, not when she was hurting so much. She heard Adrien say to not give up, that that would mean Thrax won, but would her going on really make him lose? He hadn't been after her, not really. She had just gotten in the way, and she wouldn't have even been out there if she hadn't driven Louie away. She felt like the whole thing was her fault. "I just make everything worse," she sobbed, her face pressing into Adrien's shoulder. "Every time I try to help someone, I screw up. I'm done." She felt like that was the best thing for everyone. She wasn't about to kill herself or anything like that. She just wanted to detach herself from everyone's problems. She didn't want to get involved with them, not ever again.
