For a while, Adeline had mixed feelings about the cemetery. She had avoided it for a while, since it was the place where Pitch had ditched her. But now, it seemed like an oddly nostalgic place. This was where they had met, after all. And where they'd had more than a couple of training sessions. Besides, it was quiet here. It gave Adeline a chance to get away from all the noise and traffic in the city. At the moment, she sat under a tree, thinking. While she still hadn't gotten the nerve to speak to Yang or Weiss directly, she'd managed to get some info on both of them. Yang had been released from the hospital not too long ago, so that had to mean she was doing okay. According to the tabloids, Weiss was getting out of the house every now and then, although reporters wondered why she always seemed to be by herself. Then again, Adeline wasn't sure how much she could believe celebrity gossip. Stuff like that had to be taking with a grain of salt, along with reports on how the city was doing. Some said it was doing well and good while it recovered from the prison break. Others claimed that it would never forget some of the bad things that had happened. Adeline felt like it was a mixture of both. Some people had moved on, others were still haunted by what had happened. Adeline felt like she was somewhere along that line. She still felt guilty over what had happened, but she was at least trying to move forward. Fixing things with Pitch had definitely put an optimistic light on things.

Suddenly, a light breeze passed over the graveyard and the tree under which Adeline rested. A moment later a tall, slender shadow appeared from nowhere and came to rest over the young woman. For a moment there was no sound other then the gentle breath of the wind as it passed on its way.
Pitch watched the young woman in silence another moment before he spoke.
"Hello, Adeline."
Seeing her now, even after he had finally come out of his self exile, gave him the same feeling he only experienced when close to her. And while part of him still baulked at the emotions he had come to know because of her, he couldn't deny that the mere sight of her seemed to release some unknown weight from his shoulders.

Adeline's hair rippled as a breeze blew by. It was cold, but not unpleasant. Almost as soon as it passed, she felt a presence nearby. She knew it was Pitch before he even greeted her. For most people, he made the atmosphere a bit heavier. For her though, feeling him nearby was comforting. And she couldn't deny the happiness that blossomed inside her whenever he was nearby. It was different from when she was just crushing on him, mostly because now, she received affection in return. "Hey Pitch," she said, looking up and giving him a small smile. It almost seemed odd, that the two of them kept running into each other here. Even Axel had commented how a cemetery wasn't exactly a romantic destination. Still, it seemed almost right for the two of them. It fit the darkness that both of them carried.

Slowly, Adeline opened her eyes and looked up at where he stood, offering her own small greeting. When she smiled, his pulse seemed to quicken by the slightest degree.
"I am glad to see that you are alright."
Slowly, he walked over to the tree where she sat and lowered himself gracefully to the ground, leaning an elbow against his leg while his back pressed against the rough bark. He left a small space between himself and her, not touching but also not far from her. He had thought he might find Adeline in the graveyard where they had first met but hadn't had a chance to come and check on her until only a short while ago.
Part of the reason was simply to see her but another part was to make sure she was safe. Ever since the prison break in Bellerouge, the city had become far more dangerous than usual. And things hadn't improved much since he had finally returned to the Others Unit after his 'disappearing act.' He had gone straight back into his work as an officer without offering any explanation for his leaving in the first place, and although rumors abounded about why he had suddenly left the BPD no one had really had time to listen to such gossip. Not when so many criminals had found their way out of jail and back into the city.
He himself had been hard at work since that time, his Nightmares constantly on the search for escaped convicts. Already he had managed to recapture a dozen of those who had escaped, but not the ones he sought out. Not Cinder's lackey or Vanitas....or Thrax.

"Yeah, I guess 'alright' is the best way of putting it," Adeline said wryly. She wasn't doing great, but she wasn't doing terrible either. She was just "alright." Although, considering how low she had been feeling not too long ago, "alright" was a nice step in the right direction. Of course, having Pitch around improved her mood considerably. He sat close to her, but not close enough where they could touch. Despite being the only two people in the graveyard right now, physical contact in public probably wasn't the best thing. Age wasn't a huge factor in relationships around here, particularly since so many of the citizens around here were hundreds or thousands of years old, but people probably still wouldn't approve of the two of them getting romantically involved. Adeline didn't see what the big deal was. If Pitch looked like a teenager, nobody would bat an eye at the two of them. And there were plenty of people that were like that. Vampires or elves or ghosts could be centuries old, yet look no different from the regular teenagers that ran around this city. She was brought out of her thoughts though, when she realized that she had been quiet for a long time. "Sorry. Just...thinking about things," she said.

Pitch didn't respond to Adeline's own wry words, instead choosing to lean back against the tree and sit in silence. Things were quiet as they normally were in the graveyard, a welcome reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the city surrounding them. Perhaps that was why they were both drawn to this place. The dead didn't demand anything of you, were far beyond any need for rushing about, and they kept your secrets.
For a few minutes neither of them said anything and merely listened to the breeze as it gently blew through the leaves overhead, creating a soft rustling that almost sounded like running water. Really, it could have been a peaceful moment if darker thoughts hadn't lingered over them. The silence was only broken when Adeline offered a small apology. Pitch merely shook his head, his yellow eyes focused on nothing in particular.
"There is no need for apology. A great deal has happened to you over such a small span of time."
At these words, he shifted slightly in his posture as he realized he himself had to be included in this assessment. After all, he still had moments when he had to think over all that had happened between him and Adeline. It seemed so distant and yet felt as if it had only just happened a moment ago. And he was still sorting through what all of this now meant for him. He loved Adeline, yes, but there was no telling where such a relationship would go.

"Yeah, I guess." Adeline had been dealing with a lot of emotional baggage lately. But really, was that the worst thing to happen? Other people had it worse. Weiss, Yang, even Namine. The poor woman was still scared to death after what Vanitas had done to her. Adeline only encountered him for a few minutes. Namine had been kidnapped by the guy. Anytime Adeline was in a bad position, it didn't last too long. Her last encounter with Thrax was still on her mind though, and the possibility of him getting somebody to replace her made her anxious. Who knew what he would do to accomplish that. "The city seems ready to move on though," she said. "Everyone's pretty eager to put the past behind them." She had mentioned as much to Namine the last time they had spoken. Every day, the city repaired itself a little bit more and people were getting closer to resuming their daily lives. Of course, a lot of them were still on edge, but there were still attempts at getting back to normal. Adeline had to admire that.

"And yet you find yourself having trouble doing the same."
It wasn't a question. Pitch's voice, however, was gentle and held no note of accusation in it. Yes, the city did indeed seem eager to put the past behind it, to forget what had happened and move on. But at what cost?
There were those still struggling to come to terms with what had happened to them and yet everyone expected them to push it aside like it was nothing. The past is in the past they would say, its old history, build a bridge and get over it....but it seemed to him you could never get rid of the past that easily. At least, not entirely, and maybe you weren't meant to just forget it like so many of the people in Bellerouge believed. However, that was one question he didn't have an answer to.
"Adeline...."

Adeline didn't even try to deny it. She was having a hard time moving on. She was making efforts to do so, it was just difficult. She still felt guilty, no matter how many times she tried to tell herself that it was Thrax's fault for what happened, not hers. And she still felt cowardly for not talking to Weiss or Yang face-to-face. Didn't they deserve to meet the girl that had summoned the demon that had hurt them so much? Even though Adeline knew what Thrax did wasn't her fault, that didn't mean that they thought the same. If they blamed her for what happened, Adeline knew it would just make her guilty feelings that much harder to get rid of. "Thrax hurt a lot of people. And I feel like I should...I don't know, say something to them? But I just...can't."

Pitch turned his head slightly so that he could just see Adeline out of the corner of his eye as she spoke of a guilt she couldn't rid herself of. He could see the worry etching itself across her face and sensed the guilt and uncertainty that still plagued her. In this way, things really hadn't changed much between the two of them; he could still read her emotions as easily as if they were an open book. Slowly, he turned so that his gaze was once more fixated on nothing more then the surrounding tombstones and the trees that shaded them.
"You feel guilty still...."
Once upon a time Pitch would have scoffed at how illogical and misplaced emotions could be, how they could leave you feeling responsible for things that you had no role in whatsoever. Now, however, he understood this experience far more then he had ever wanted to. Guilt didn't have to be reasonable or make any sense yet it still possessed a great power that could destroy you.

Adeline sighed. "Yeah. I know you've said it's not my fault, and my parents have too. It's hard to just...turn off how I feel, you know?" Logic couldn't do much against emotions if they were strong enough. In a way, love was the same way. Adeline couldn't just turn off how she felt about Pitch, no matter how much she wanted, and he couldn't do the same regarding her. They had tried to forget about each other, but they had been pulled together again anyway. Love was weird that way. "I've blamed myself for anything Thrax did for so long. It'll...take some time, to get out of that habit." She wasn't going to change on a dime. Not having these feelings was going to take some work. She just wished it could pay off sooner.

Pitch didn't speak. There really was nothing to say at this point, no way to counter Adeline's words or try and debate the point simply because she was right. She couldn't simply push aside how she felt, no matter how misplaced her feelings were. It was like when he himself had tried to deny he cared for the young Witch, desperately pushing against those feelings but finding it impossible to rid himself of them. The heart played by its own set of rules that seemed to fly in the face of common sense.
Like so many of the other burdens and problems she had faced, this was something Adeline would have to resolve in her own way. However, there was one crucial difference this time.
"You won't have to face it alone."

Pitch did have a point. She didn't have to do this alone. Her parents remained faithful by her side. She had a friend or two that could help her out. And she had Pitch. She had to remember that that was a lot, compared to others. Some people didn't have anyone to rely on and had to do everything by themselves. She was lucky in that retrospect. "That does make me feel a little better," she said, smiling up at Pitch. However guilty she might feel, she at least still had others who didn't blame her for what happened, and liked her, despite being part demon. She wondered if Pitch had any kind of support system. Did he even need one? He seemed to be used to tackling things on his own. And if he had any friends, he didn't really talk about them that much. In a way, Adeline didn't really know that much about Pitch, the little things at least. Sure, she knew some big things, like the promise he had made, and that he had done some terrible things before becoming an officer. But other things were still a mystery. Did he have a favorite color? Or TV show? Or book? "You have friends that help you out too, right? When you're going through something tough?" she asked.

"No."
The answer came short and quick, but even after he had said it Pitch's face fell into a slight frown. His immediate thought had been a resounding negative in regards to Adeline's question but the more he thought about it, the more he realized that wasn't really true. While only a short time ago he would have never even considered the idea of friendship, it seemed that now there were certain individuals who did care to some degree about him. And indeed he did care about their own wellbeing in turn.
It wasn't much, but still...
"....Maybe."

Adeline blinked at Pitch's first answer. She hadn't expected it to be, well, short. It was just "no" with no explanation or elaboration. She frowned, feeling some pity swell inside her. Even demons had to have friends, right? Sure, they probably wouldn't talk about touchy-feely stuff, but still. However, after a moment of silence, Pitch's answer changed from a "no" to a "maybe." Honestly though, Adeline found it just as confusing. What did a person do to be considered into the "maybe" category? Adeline felt like it was a more straight-forward thing. You were either friends or you weren't. "Like...?" She paused, wondering if Pitch would name anybody. She had met a couple of cops due to her frequent visits to the police station, but she didn't really know any of them. Did Pitch?
