Pitch took a few moments to try and straighten out his thoughts before he answered. Even as he did, he kept his yellow eyes focused on a stray cloud that was passing overhead.
"There are some people at the BPD.....members of the Others Unit. I never stopped to consider that they might be anything other then acquaintances but....I suppose some of them are more then that."
He continued to frown up at the cloud before closing his eyes and putting a hand over them as if the sunlight hurt. In truth he still didn't enjoy being out during the daylight much but he didn't avoid it like he once had.
"I suppose until recently such things didn't concern me."

Adeline didn't get any names, but at least Pitch admitted where his supposed friends would be. She figured she'd have to settle with that, for now. "I guess that's one thing I'm guilty of," she said. "I made you all mushy inside." She said the last sentence in a joking tone, but she supposed there was some truth to it. According to Pitch, she had made him feel things he didn't even know he could feel. In a way though, he had done the same to her. She'd never loved anyone like this before, not really. It made her want to reach out and take his hand, but she wasn't sure how he'd react to such a public gesture. Instead, she scooted a little closer to him. Being near him was still a pretty good thing.

Suddenly, Pitch removed his hand from his eyes and turned so that he was looking into Adeline's face. His expression was one of mild incredulousness.
"Mushy? Is that what you call my expression of emotions?"
And despite the look on his face, he couldn't completely hide the trace of a smile that appeared along the corners of his mouth.

Adeline laughed. "Maybe not me, but others might. They'd wonder how on earth I managed to get a demon to feel so sentimental," she said. Of course, there was the question of whether anyone would ever know what was going on between them. Adeline couldn't imagine what her parents might think. She hadn't even mentioned Axel to them yet, who already had the image of a "bad boy." They'd probably flip out even more if they found out Adeline and Pitch were in a relationship. Sure, they liked Pitch well enough, and were thankful that he had taught Adeline how to manage her demon side. But that wasn't exactly the same as giving him permission to date their daughter.

"The way you talk, you'd think you used your powers on me and turned me from a Terror Demon into a marshmallow."
Pitch's voice was slightly disgruntled as he said this, but he didn't move away from Adeline when she pushed herself closer to him. In fact, in the next moment he had reached out and gently taken Adeline's hand into his own pale palm without realizing what he was doing. Normally he would have avoided displaying any kind of physical contact with Adeline in an effort to protect her. No one at that time knew about there relationship and he wanted to keep it that way. After all, he was a Terror Demon and a member of the Others Unit and had no shortage of enemies.
When he had cared only for himself, that hadn't been a problem. There had been no one he cared for that an enemy could use as a weapon against him. However, all that had changed now because of Adeline. Now, he had to keep her safe.

Adeline had to snicker at Pitch's disgruntlement. "Maybe a very burnt marshmallow," she said, referring to how 90% of him was the color black. Anything that wasn't black was grey. Or gold, if you counted his eyes. She felt her heart skip a beat though as Pitch's hand gently took hers. She still marveled at how he felt different from humans. Demons tended to run colder or hotter than humans, depending on their personality. Or powers. Pitch tended to be on the cool side, although it wasn't an unpleasant feeling. Personally, Adeline was surprised that Pitch had made the first move. Sure, the grave yard was a pretty private place, but she had expected him to be more paranoid about somebody walking in on them. Maybe she was being the paranoid one, not wanting to overstep any boundaries. "So, this is a thing we can do now?" she asked, her fingers tightening slightly around his.

It was only at Adeline's words that Pitch realized he had taken her hand into his own without even realizing his action. For a moment he thought about releasing his hold but when she gently tightened her fingers around his palm, he didn't. However, the realization of what he had done only served to remind him how careful the two of them would have to be.
"If we are careful, yes...."
He fell silent once more, one of his fingers gently stroking the back of her hand as his mind tried to make sense of what he and Adeline were to do. Yes, they both loved each other and in the fairytales that was more then enough to overcome the trials and difficulties that faced said lovers, but this was real life. Even if neither of them had the lingering threat of human criminals, dangerous Others and vengeful Demons hanging over them, there were still many obstacles set before them. Even something as simple as their age difference could create problems.

Technically, Pitch did say "yes" although there were strings attached. Adeline knew that being careful was going to have to be a major factor in their relationship, but she still felt a little sad that they had to hide it. And she had no idea if they would ever be able to tell anyone. Sure, one of their problems would be solved once Adeline was legally an adult, but there were still others. If Thrax ever found out their relationship was like this, he'd probably try to exploit it. Just because he wasn't focused on Adeline anymore didn't mean that he was done with hurting her. He could go after anyone, if he felt like it. He was unpredictable. "You'd think after reading so many books like Twilight, people would be more accepting of a teenage girl falling for an immortal being," she joked, her fingers playing with his.

"That is because in the end they know it's not real. Humans love the idea of something as long as its just that, an idea and nothing more. However, once that idea starts to become a reality..."
Pitch didn't finish. There really wasn't any point when the answer was so glaringly obvious. Yes, people loved ideas when they were nothing more substantial then dreams, when they were unreachable and therefore harmless. Once something became real, however, people often didn't want it anymore because those dreams were now real. And real always meant a great deal of bad came with the good.
"Stories you can finish in the end. You can put a book back on a shelf and it will never harm you. Reality is just the opposite."

Pitch had a point. Stories like that were nice in theory. But them actually existing in real life? Not so much. Adeline still found it troubling though. She wished she could do something about that. But she had no idea where to start. Besides, preaching like that had never been her thing. That involved being in the spot light, in the center of attention, and she usually craved the opposite. She liked to fade into the background until she was almost invisible, especially since Thrax had left a piece of himself inside her. Feeling everyone's eyes on her after her demon side acted up was always the worst feeling. "I'm hoping our story turns out alright though," she said, glancing up at him. "Even if the odds are against us." She hoped she could remain positive about that. The feelings she and Pitch had for each other were real. There was no doubt about that. She just hoped it was enough to see them through.

Pitch paused before responding to Adeline's words, and when he finally did speak his yellow gaze had turned to look into Adeline's eyes. Those eyes, once a source of pure fear and terror to so many people, were far soften then they had ever been before in the Demon's long existence.
"I suppose that depends on us."
In that moment he felt a deep desire to pull the young Witch close to him, to hold her in his arms and feel her gentle warmth, to kiss her lips once again.... but he couldn't. Not now, even in such a seemingly private place as the graveyard. It was too much of a risk given everything that had already happened to both of them. And he couldn't risk her safety.

That was a heavy responsibility, the two of them making sure their relationship lasted. But Adeline felt like it was something she could carry on her shoulders. It was a weight she was happy to bare. If she could handle all this demon stuff, surely she could handle any drama this relationship threw at them. Even if it meant not being as affectionate as she would like in public. Their fingers were intertwined now, but Adeline remembered how strong Pitch's arms had been when he was holding her, how his lips had been hard yet gentle at the same time. Her skin tingled anytime she thought about it, and she wished they could do that again right now. She gave a little chuckle as she said "I remember seeing kids at my old school, and wondering how on earth they never got tired of being all romantic towards each other and stuff all day, every day. I think I'm beginning to understand why." Really, that was all she wanted to do with Pitch. Being near him, holding his hand, talking with him, she felt like she could do it non-stop. Even when she wasn't around him, she was usually thinking about him. It was a sensation that she liked.

Pitch nodded his head slightly as he continued to caress her hand, but a shadow appeared to suddenly fall over his face even though there were no clouds overhead. He had badly wanted to see Adeline again even if they couldn't public display their relationship, but there was another reason for this meeting with her. He had been quietly debating with himself on whether or not he should tell her about it. After all, the information might simply distress her for no reason and leave her with lingering anxiety overtop what she already had.
However, sitting there with her hand in his and his feelings for her pounding strongly through his blood, he realized he couldn't keep this from her. She had a right to know.
"The BPD has given me the assignment to find Thrax and bring him in."
He said this in a low, clear voice but kept his gaze away from Adeline and on a nearby tombstone covered in moss. He didn't want to see the mixed emotions that would be racing across her face as she processed his words. He didn't want to see the surprise, the worry and the fear reflected in her eyes.

Pitch was quiet for a really long time, but Adeline felt like he wasn't just enjoying the silence. He had something on his mind. And when he said what it was, she felt herself freeze for a moment. Really, this was a sensible thing for the BPD to do. Pitch was probably the only officer who could go up against Thrax and have a good chance of winning. Nobody else seemed really cut out for the job. Still, Adeline felt fear coursing through her at those words. She knew Pitch could take care of himself just fine, but she still worried about what Thrax might do to him. After all, he blamed him for making her go "soft." What if he decided to get revenge? Her fingers tightened around Pitch's, as if that alone could protect him. "Do they want him alive? Or..." Her voice trailed off. She wasn't sure which option was better. She knew having Thrax face the legal system was the right way to do things. Being stuck in jail for all eternity was what he deserved. But there was no way he could be persuaded to surrender. The only way he could be brought into jail was if he physically couldn't escape. And Adeline wasn't sure if that was possible. Killing him might be the only option.

Adeline's response to the news was almost exactly how Pitch predicted it would be. He could feel the tension in her hand as she squeezed his tightly, could taste the fear that was coming off of her in waves. However, he waited quietly to see if Adeline would speak. Eventually, she did.
"They would like me to bring him in alive if at all possible. However, if Thrax becomes too much of a danger I am allowed to use whatever means necessary to stop him."
In the Demon's mind, these words were just a bad joke that no one was laughing at. Thrax wasn't going to just surrender and allow himself to be taken in without a fight. Vanitas might have been that kind of Demon, but not Thrax. No, when Pitch finally did confront him he knew it would be a hard fight, a difficult fight, and that it would most likely end with Thrax's death.
