Adeline let out a breath. She figured as much. That tended to be the standard when it came to police officers. Then again, who knew if Pitch would actually abide by that. Adeline knew how much he hated Thrax. He had pretty much promised to keep her safe from him, and she knew he'd go to any lengths to keep that promise. Adeline just hoped he didn't go too far and end up getting seriously hurt. "You'll be careful, won't you?" she asked quietly, looking up at him. "I know demons are pretty sturdy and stuff and I know you're strong enough to take him on but..." Her voice trailed off, wondering if she was acting silly. Should she really be so worried about this? Pitch was strong, she knew that much. But she knew Thrax didn't play fair. He'd use any means to win, even if it meant playing dirty or doing something outrageous. He came from Hell, after all. Creatures from there weren't known to play by the rules.

At long last, Pitch finally turned his gaze away from the tombstone and back onto Adeline. She sat under the tree, her pale face framed by black hair that blew lightly in the wind. Her eyes, an amber color that could almost be described as yellow, were turned towards his own face. Beautiful. Adeline truly was such a beautiful creature but he couldn't allow that to distract him if he were to keep her safe. Not now, not ever.
"Of course. It's fine, Adeline. Even at his most powerful, Thrax has never posed a threat to me. He wouldn't have even been able to escape my shadows at the Masquerade Ball if another Demon had not aided him. No, when the time comes I will find Thrax, I will defeat him, and if it must be, I will end him. You have nothing to fear."

Pitch sounded so sure of himself. Adeline hoped she was right. Maybe she'd just have to live with her paranoid feelings until Thrax was caught. Sometimes, you couldn't stop worrying about something until it was over and done with. She just hoped it would be done soon. She was tired of feeling anxious and guilty and sad so much. She had started this whole thing with Thrax, she wanted it finished, even if she couldn't exactly finish it herself. Some might have called that cowardly, but Adeline knew better than to try and end this on her own. She'd be badly outmatched, and Thrax would have no qualms with killing her now, not when he no longer needed her. "I hope you're right," was all she said in response. She hoped Pitch could deal with her paranoia. It wasn't that she doubted him, far from it. She knew that he meant his promises when he made them. She just tended to have a slightly pessimistic outlook on Thrax-related things.

"I am. It will turn out fine."
At these words, Pitch rose slightly onto one knee and turned so that he was more or less in front of Adeline, his eyes locked onto her face even as he continued to hold her hand lightly in his own.
"I promise."
He then offered her a small smile. It was barely a turn of the lips but for the Terror Demon it was quite the expression of emotion. This small thing seemed to transform his face as well, turning it from a cold, pale and haunting mask to something still distant but handsome and warmer.

Another promise, and it seemed like the most sincere one yet. Adeline felt like Pitch was making a lot of promises lately. She just hoped he could keep them all. She felt like he had a lot to do. He had promised to keep her safe, and now he was promising to defeat Thrax, one way or another. But, he seemed so confident when making them. Maybe he was just the type to take promises seriously. He had good reason for it. The remains of one of them still lay on his chest as a nasty scar. Regardless, the smile he gave was enough to ease Adeline's worries, for now. If Pitch was confident that he could do this, then she wanted to support him and not be such a downer. "Okay. Thank you." She gave him a smile in return.

Pitch knew Adeline was still concerned but was glad to see she wasn't so worried she couldn't manage a smile. He was about to say something more when the relative quiet of their surroundings was interrupted by a buzzing sound.
Slowly, Pitch's small smile turned into a frown as he reached into the pocket of his robe and pulled out a BPD-issued cellphone. He pressed a button on the screen and the buzzing stopped as a message appeared. His eyes quickly scanned the message and his demeanor darkened. Once he was finished, he put the phone back in his pocket before looking back at Adeline as he rose effortlessly to his feet.
"I have to go. The BPD just received some information that might help us in locating Thrax."

The peaceful moment between Adeline and Pitch halted once his phone went off. Adeline figured that could only mean one thing. Pitch didn't exactly receive social calls. It was probably related to the police. Sure enough, he said they had found some info that could lead to catching Thrax. Adeline hoped it could actually help. It seemed like lately, there were rumors flying around everywhere, and it was hard to determine which ones could actually lead to the capture of a criminal. It looked like the police would have to investigate every lead if there was even the slightest chance that it could lead to something good. However, before Pitch left, she wanted to do one thing. "Could I have your phone number?" she asked, pulling out her own cell phone. "I mean, it'd be nice if I could text you once in a while, or something." Really, Adeline had no other way of contacting Pitch besides calling the police department, or actually going to his place. She doubted anyone was going to monitor his phone. He was a police officer, after all.

"That reminds me."
Pitch reached into the pocket opposite the one that held his cell phone and produced a folded piece of paper. He handed it to the young woman where she sat. Written in elegant handwriting on the inside was a single phone number.
"I meant to give this to you beforehand. Should you ever find yourself in need of me, call this. However, don't share this number with anyone else."

Pitch seemed to be one step ahead of her and already had his phone number written out for Adeline. She quickly set him up in her Contacts list before tucking the piece of paper in her pocket. Pitch seemed to be a little protective of his phone number, so she made a mental note to throw the paper away once she got home. Still, it felt nice to have his number now. Knowing that she could talk to him with just a few clicks of a button made her feel a little safer, and happier. "Thanks. Good luck with work," she said. She gave him a smile before heading off. However, it occurred to her that while she had Pitch's number, he didn't have hers. Luckily, he could set her up as a contact if she sent him a text. She pulled out her phone and was about to send a generic text message when something else came to mind. She smiled as she texted "Love you" and hit the send button. After that, she pocketed her phone and continued on her way.

Pitch merely gave a nod of his head before saying his own farewell.
"Goodbye, Adeline."
With that they both went their separate ways. While part of him desperately wanted more, he knew that for her own safety he could not display his feelings for Adeline, not out in the open. No, he had to use the utmost restraint in public and could only be truly open with her in private. This was the cost of loving Adeline.
Slowly, he walked along a paved path that lead towards the north entrance of the graveyard and would take him in the direction of the BPD. However, a moment later his phone once again buzzed and he pulled it out to see that Adeline had sent him a message consisting of only two words.
Love you.
He paused for a moment as he looked down at the message before slowly putting it away. And while he appeared his normal self, cool and emotionless, as he headed on his way, anyone who knew him well would have noticed how the very tips of his lips were curved up ever so slightly.
