"Mostly it's to give the serum a time limit. The problem with Vampire and Were blood is that it often turns humans permanently into Others. Agents in their body fluids act like an infection when introduced into the bloodstream of a non-Other person. My serum is meant to only give Other-like abilities for a specific length of time and then become inactive before passing out of the body."
Anna said all of this as she carefully examined the blood samples she already had. She had to preserve each sample at a controlled temperature to keep them as fresh as possible. It had already taken a great deal of time, effort and energy to procure what she had. If she lost any of the samples, it would set her back a long way.
"I've already run some tests on human blood samples and if the agents from vampire and were blood aren't made inactive after a certain period of time, they immediately spread like wildfire to transform the host into an Other."
Anna didn't add the other possible outcome. She didn't tell Dorian or Weiss that the infection could also result in death.

"Unseelie are immortal. And if we decide to make a human faery-like, it's usually forever. Unless someone somehow breaks that spell, but it's only absolute true love that does that. Might be careful to make your formula kiss proof" his mouth quirked into a smirk. "Have you tried mixing a silver agent or a wolfsbane agent to the preparations? That calms the were disease and makes it go slower, giving you time to properly neutralize it" he suggested.

So, therein lied the problem. If things went wrong, a human looking for a temporary fix could permanently change into an Other. Weiss didn't have to say how much of a disaster that would be. Humans always freaked out a bit when they changed into another species, like a vampire or a ghost, and they'd probably react the same if it was done this way too. Dorian's suggestion of using silver to neutralize any were genes seemed decent enough, but Weiss had a question about that. "Do you think there'll be enough were genes in the person for silver to affect them?" she asked. "I mean, if it's just a temporary boost, then it's just a little bit of an Other inside a human, right? Could whatever hurts Others, like silver or sunlight or holy water, still affect them?" It was something to think about. If a human had a boost from some werewolf genes, could silver still hurt them? Or would there be too much human in them for it to affect them?

"It might slow down the were blood agents, but it doesn't do anything for the vampire side. Plus, silver reacts oddly with some of the other samples I've been trying to add in."
Satisfied that all her samples were still in good condition, Anna reached up and once again closed the fume hood before placing a lock on it. Even though Dorian was in on her experiment now and wouldn't report her, she had to keep her supplies and samples under lock and key. It was the only way to make sure that no one accidentally came across what she was doing down in the BPD labs at night.
"That's something I was able to weed out pretty early on, actually. Hopefully when I'm finished with this all, I'll have created a substance that can give a human the temporary traits from several others but with none of the weaknesses! Timing is the biggest issue of course but once I've tinkered around a bit more with the several prototype serums I have, they'll only give a human powers for a brief time. Enough to heal a grievous wound or run out of a dangerous situation or subdue an adversary..... but no longer then that."
As Anna said this last part, a large yawn escaped her and she put a hand up to her mouth to try and stifle it. It was starting to get late and she had already spent several nights in a row working on her experiment well after midnight. She knew she needed to rest but her drive and passion to see her serum finished pushed her to keep working until she was about to fall asleep at the beakers.

"Wolfsbane has the same properties as silver, with none of the side-effects to other blood types" Dorian suggested thoughtfully. "I've seen it used many times in my life. It's used to sedate werewolves and give them sanity while in wolf state so they don't eat people. But really, the lore has been mostly lost so many weres don't know that's an option nowadays. Pity" When Anna started yawning Dorian gently pulled her away from her work and lightly pushed her towards the door. "Young lady, you need to sleep. Let me finish my work and tomorrow you'll be rested enough to look at your little project with new eyes. How does that sound?"

While Anna didn't exactly have a solution to Weiss's problem, she did admit she was working on it. Weiss figured she'd have to be satisfied with that. It'd probably be no easy task, trying to develop a serum that could give a human all the benefits of an Other, but none of the weaknesses. Each race had something that could be used against them. Werewolves had silver, some faeries hated iron. Weiss felt that if she had to name a weakness of witchdoctors, it was that they practiced an art that blurred the line between dark and light magic. This made it easy for so many of them to fall down the wrong path. They ended up using their powers for evil, and could be possessed by harmful spirits. But, was what she was doing really so different from what Anna was doing? Anna's experiments were questionable, but they were for a good cause, and she had good intentions. Weiss's plan was to help herself more than others, but it would at least be better in the long run. Things would get better for her once she was in charge, and if she had her shadow spirits beside her, nobody would question her power. At that point however, Anna gave a yawn. She looked like how Weiss felt after pouring over ancient voodoo tomes all night. "Yeah. Rest is needed if you two are going to work on this thing," she added. She wasn't sure if she'd actively participate in this, but she'd keep Anna's secret. Besides, she had her own project to worry about, and unlike Anna, she wasn't sure if she could get someone like Dorian to help her. This was something she needed to do on her own.

When Dorian lightly pushed her towards the door and told her she needed to get some rest, Anna gave him a slightly annoyed look. She wasn't a child to be sent to bed when they had stayed up past their curfew. However, Weiss quickly jumped in and agreed that if they were to work on the project, she would need to get some sleep.
Anna might have argued but her words were drown out by yet another, smaller yawn. Once that had passed, she thought over what both of them had said and realized they were right.
"....I guess so. I have been going almost nonstop since I started on this project. And a good night's sleep would go a long way."
She mused quietly to herself before giving a small nod and looking back towards the Unseelie and the Voodoo girl.
"Alright. You can look over the notes and see if you find anything useful, Dorian. As for you, Weiss, you might want to head on out. Civilians aren't generally allowed into the labs here. Might raise some uncomfortable questions, but Riku should be at his apartment by now. You could catch him there."
Anna pulled off her lab coat and gathered up her personal possessions as she prepared to leave. However, before she walked out the pink double doors, she turned back and gave another smile.
"I'll be back bright and early tomorrow. See you then!"
And with that, she disappeared behind the swinging door.
