"If you hadn't noticed. I'm not human. We're not all saints." he said. "Besides, it was back during the war. Loads of people were trying to survive back then."
He hurt a lot of people. He had nearly killed one. He fought and was wild and savage as they came. Almost as mindless as one of the dogs on Cruella's leashes. A click of her fingers and she had her own walking inferno at her beck and call. Worst of all, he liked it. He wanted to hurt people. He enjoyed watching them suffer for the things they did. Because let's face it, they weren't exactly the best society had to offer either. But when he almost went too far, he realized the sort of monster he had become. It shocked him out of that life style like a jolt of electricity to the body.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean..." Adeline hadn't meant to sound judgmental or anything. It was just surprising. One look at someone like Axel and you couldn't really see all the bad stuff he had done. He just seemed like a friendly guy. Heck, if Axel hadn't admitted to doing all this stuff, Adeline might not have believed it. She was quiet for a moment before she asked "Do you think she wants you back?" If she had a demon like him that could make flames appear instantly, she knew she'd be reluctant to let him go. Any criminal could see the value in Axel's power. And while he may have cut ties with Cruella, Adeline felt like that didn't mean she didn't want him back. Was she trying to get him to come back and work for her again?

"Adeline, it's fine. I don't hide from what I did." he reassured her.
She looked so concerned that she had offended him. It was sweet. Very thoughtful even. But he had done awful things. He couldn't hide from that. He had a record after all. He nearly killed someone. Only that sent him reeling back. He couldn't let himself become a monster for the sake of someone who only saw him as a tool. Cruella never truly cared for him. Just what he could do to protect her little pack.
"No way. She considers me a traitor for leaving her little... pack. The only thing she wants from me is my head on a silver plate."
She wouldn't drink his blood. He probably tasted like ash anyways or charcoal. Either way, his death would be a waste.

Axel's reassurances made Adeline feel a little better. He was just laying everything out as he saw fight, nothing more. And when it came to wondering if Cruella wanted him back, Axel responded in the negative almost immediately. Although Adeline wasn't sure if wanting his head on a silver platter was any better. Maybe in Axel's case, it was. Better to be dead than work for Cruella again. Adeline felt like she had the same relationship with Thrax. He didn't care for her as much as he used to, and even blamed her for his current situation. He probably wouldn't object to her head being presented on a silver platter either. "When you say pack, do you mean...literally?" she asked. Is that what groups of vampires were called these days? Or did she have some people on board who could turn into dogs or wolves? She'd heard stories of a vampire or two that would use werewolves as guard dogs. She didn't know if they were true, but if Cruella followed that same mindset, then she really was a force to be reckoned with.

"Pack, kin, clan, group, family, cult, whatever floats your boat. There's a lot of them." Axel dismissed.
She was rebuilding a clan so to speak. She barely cared that one of her girls nearly sizzled into a crisp at his bar because she failed to tell the poor girl that sunlight would kill her. They got her back inside, but still, it had nearly been an accidental murder when they were trying to kick patrons out after last call. He knew that he would not let Cruella add Adeline to the 'family'. Not as a food, not as a bouncer and not as 'kin'. The girl didn't deserve that life.
"But I digress," Axel sighed. "Whatever happened to that guy of yours. Mr. Too-Old-For-You?"

"Oh." That was a little disconcerting. But Axel seemed to ready to change the subject, and Adeline went with it. She'd asked enough questions about his past and Cruella. She had plenty to think about now. As she sipped her tea, Axel ended up asking about her love life and she ended up choking on her tea for a second. She'd nearly forgotten that she had come to Axel with her romance problems, even if she'd never actually said who she was crushing on. Her face flushed with embarrassment as she remembered taking Axel's advice and practically storming into Pitch's apartment after the jail break. It wasn't literally what he'd said to do, but his advice of "Don't think, just act" had stuck with her, and she had decided to act on it when she had gotten pissed off at Pitch. It had all worked out in the end though, so maybe it had been good advice. "Well..." She brushed her hair out of her face before continuing. "I guess you could say the 'don't think, just act' advice worked." She knew she was being vague, but she wasn't sure how many details Axel wanted.

Judging by the way she nearly spluttered her tea all over him, he finally had a success story. That was great. He grinned at her while she tried to recollect herself, blushing and coughing on the tea that went down the wrong way. But he managed to keep from laughing at her. She didn't need that in her life. He was just glad she listened. Most people didn't and then came back to him wailing about how he was right and they should have made a move or they blamed him because the person didn't return their feelings. As if they could force emotion.
"Did you kiss him?" he teased.

"Maybe," Adeline replied, her face half hidden behind her mug. Heck, by this point, she and Pitch had kissed each other several times, although that wasn't really the basis of their relationship. Theirs was more quiet than others. Even when they were alone, they didn't say a whole lot, and were content to just be near each other. It was an interesting kind of quiet that Adeline had never experienced before. In the past, it was usually associated with her loneliness. Now, it was fonder, since she felt like she and Pitch could say a lot just with a glance, or the way their hands would brush up against each other. It was different from the romances she'd seen in movies or books. Then again, people probably felt like their romantic endeavors were always different from the stuff media portrayed.

"Liar," Axel laughed.
He grinned. All shy and embarrassed from just a few kisses. That was too cute. From the way she was avoiding him, he was certain she had kissed the guy. A lot more than once. He didn't have to know who the guy was or what she had done to finally win him over. He could be happy that she took his advice at all. He was getting tired of the people who came into his bar, whined and cried and asked for advice, but didn't use it. Some of them would even double back and blame him. As if it was his fault they chickened out.
"Does he make you happy?" he asked.

Adeline's face just got more red, although when Axel asked if her mystery guy made her happy, she nodded. "Yeah, he does. He just...gets me, you know? He understands me. And we don't even have to talk that much when we're together. Just...being near each other is enough." That was really what Adeline liked best about her relationship with Pitch. He understood her demon side best, and could often tell what was on her mind just by looking at her. Of course, he couldn't read everything. He had been oblivious to the fact that she had fallen for him before they had finally confessed their feelings to each other. But still, he was pretty close to reading her mind. Adeline paused before asking Axel "Have you ever felt like that with someone?" She wasn't sure if Axel had had any serious romantic endeavors in the past, but he did seem to have a lot of advice concerning them, so maybe he had an inkling of what she was talking about.

"I..."
He thought that Anna understood. While he worked she would come into the bar, they'd chat a bit and when they weren't talking he would do his other work, but she had become a regular. She was after all the first human who didn't recoil on instinct after figuring out what he was. She didn't shy away. She didn't even bat an eye when he was literally on fire in front of her, ready to burn a man's face off. But all because he saw the harm her science experiment could bring and he disagreed with her, she blew up in his face and called him a rotten friend. Made him wonder if he could trust someone like that. Someone so easy to turn on him just because he disagreed.
"I don't think so. No."

Adeline's brow furrowed. Axel seemed hesitant while answering, and sad. It made her wonder if there was more to the story than he was telling. Was it part of his bad week that he had mentioned earlier? Or was it from a long time ago, when he had worked with Cruella? She wasn't sure if she should ask, especially when she had practically probed him for info on Cruella a few minutes ago. Still, she couldn't help but wonder. Maybe Axel's backstory was another one she'd have to unravel someday, along with Pitch's. At least Namine wasn't this complicated. She'd escaped from an abusive father and was having trouble figuring out her powers. It was putting it simply, sure, but at least it was easy to understand, and Adeline hadn't had to jump through too many hurdles in order to figure it out. Axel and Pitch probably wouldn't be so open about their pasts. She sipped her tea before saying "I guess I'm one of your few patrons who actually have something positive to say about their love life, am I right?" She remembered Axel complaining more than once how people liked to vent about their problems, but didn't seem to do much about them. At least Adeline had taken some initiative.

"I get a few braggers, but mostly it's broken hearts trying to drown their sorrows in alcohol." Axel said. "The life of me."
It didn't sound appealing when he spoke like that. He didn't mind it really. He enjoyed his job. He liked running his own business. Being the bartender certainly was better than being the bouncer after all. He listened to people's sorrows and gave advice. That simply was what a bartender did. He didn't see himself doing anything else. Not like a demon could do anything else. Going to school for anything different was hard. No one wanted a demon doctor. That would be enough to send humans running for the hills. He didn't like school anyways.
"But you're the only recent happily ever after, yes."

"You think they'd find better ways to cope or something," Adeline said. She'd been lucky, in regards to that. Getting paranoid and depressed after she had summoned Thrax had never driven her to get a hold of alcohol or drugs or anything else that teenagers loved to turn to when they were troubled. Although, if she was honest, she wasn't sure if her coping methods were any better. Becoming a recluse and shutting herself away wasn't very good for her either. But at least she could bounce back from those more quickly than before, now that she had friends to talk to. "Good thing I've got a friend to give me all the romantic advice I need," she said with a smile.

"For some people, booze makes things better." Axel shrugged.
But some people were self destructive about it. Nothing he could do to stop them aside from kick them out of his bar. That only sent them somewhere else to get their fix. It was a mess. But he made sure there were drink limits in place and that his wait staff no longer served after a few drinks. Or if the patron was already drunk their drink was watered down. Or swapped with something else because they're too drunk to realize it's not alcoholic. Wouldn't be the first time he swapped something with sparkling cider.
"What me? Or do you mean one of your little gal pals?" he asked.
