The police car was rushing off, sirens blaring. A crazy killer was in the back, waiting to be sent to jail. Sunshine was beaming as she Shadow skating alongside, directing traffic with his supersonic skating. She had the car to take up to prison, now restored after Thrax's stunt. This guy had been the one who raped/killed "the little mermaid", and she cou;ldn't wait to get him locked up. So, theysped off the hour drive to Angola, handing over their quarry and then taking the hour drive again to Nevermore. Her family and her boyfriend were chatting amiably. Sunshine had rushed up to hug all three members of her family and planting a kiss on Riku's cheek, making him turn bright pink.
"Sunshine, now that you're off duty," John asked, "care to get a head start on some Black Forest cookies?"
Sunshine beamed, rushing to the back. She had thrown open the doors, when she frowned. Someone was in the kitchen in a black cloak, their back to her. The baker tied her apron slowly, asking, "Um...can I...help you?"
"Yes. You can." The person wearing the cloak sneered. She flung off her hood, revealing a beautiful woman of Arabian descent. Her cat-slant eyes were gleaming a subtle red beneath brown. The grin was that of a cat who managed to corner a wounded bird. The cloak was dropped, exposing her incredibly toned body and fine silk harem girl outfit. Her black hair swished across her butt, not unlike Sunshine's. The girl smiled wickedly, her gait a sped up version of a sassy walk. "You can go ahead and drop dead for what you did to Jake."
Jasmine. The vampire who had kidnapped her all those years ago. Sunshine was petrified. She reached for her frying pan, but then remembered she had left it in the car. Keeping her cop training in mind, she reached for an unwashed table fork in the busboy's bin. She held it in front, blade sticking out. "Stay back, Jasmine!" she ordered.
The vampire chuckled and continued to saunter forward. By the time the knife was pointing at her belly...she just seemed to walk through it and not show any signs of bleeding. Her fangs bared open and she lunged. Sunshine gasped and ducked under the lunge. She ran for the kitchen door that led to the alley, but Jasmine just morphed in front. She ran for the main dining room door. Locked. She began pushing at it, crying out, "Shadow! Riku! Thomas! Someone, get the door...!"
A sensation not unlike burning began in her scalp. Sunshine knelt to the floor, wincing. Her hair's power usually didn't have this intense of a heat applied to it. Better yet, how could she have activated it without singing or being in direct sunlight? What she did know was, it was not pleasant. Her hair was yellow and blazing bright. Super Saiyan-y. Jasmine's laugh echoed from the kitchen, almost unphased by poure sunlight. But another laugh was echoing. Sunshine had heard the cold woman's voice before, but only when comanding the vamps.
"Looks like we found her, Mother Gothel..." Jasmine purred.
Gothel, the creepy lady Sunshine had never seen, cooed. "Wonderful! Now let's get our precious flower back to her tower...somewhere the damned police will never find her again!" And that was when Jasmine leapt forward again....
Sunshine gasped for breath, sitting upright, her hands upright. But now, those hands were covered in thick bandages. The white room she had woken up in was not the department, or her loft, or even the kitchen of Nevermore. It was a white hospital room. She was aching all over, and her head was throbbing from the pain.

Yang felt like all the bad stuff that happened to her friends always occurred while she was MIA. Shadow had had his whole "son of the devil" crisis while she'd been dealing with what Thrax had done. And now, upon returning from her mini vacation with Adrien, she'd found out that Sunshine was in the hospital. Details hadn't been given, and they didn't matter to Yang right now. Ever since she had taken a leap and confessed her feelings for Adrien, her earlier desire to not get involved with her friends' lives had pretty much eroded away. Making mistakes and screwing things up was something she still feared, but she could at least try to do some good. It was getting late by the time she got there, and some of the staff actually seemed surprised that she was visiting someone rather than seeing a doctor herself. But, she'd been directed to where Sunshine was staying without too much hassle. Yang tried not to think about the last time she'd had an extended stay here at the hospital. Those first few weeks after she'd lost her arm had been a dark time for her, and it was a time she didn't like to remember. By the time she got to Sunshine's room, she was feeling a bit calmer and she gave a knock at the door, "Sunshine? It's me, Yang," she said, hoping she wasn't intruding on anything.

A knock resounded on the door, and Sunshine stiffened. She reached for something, anything to defend herself. Her heart was hammering in her chest at a million miles and hour. If it was anyone who had come to take her, try and hurt her again, they would have another thing on their minds. But, wait, where was...oh, right. It had been on her desk when she had run to get the case files involving the latest supernatural murder. She had...Anna...Anna had been tainted by something and had attacked her. Dorian had saved her life...where was Dorian? Better yet, where was Anna? She had so many questions, and her hand faltered. Whoever wanted to visit her wasn't going to hurt her, or take advantage of her being burned or recovering from a nightmare. No, in fact, she was surprised to hear who it was behind the door. Adrien had said the weekend vacation would be quick, and it never occured to Sunshine how quick a weekend partook of. "Yang?" she asked in bewilderment.

Sunshine looked more than surprised to see Yang. Was she expecting somebody else? Yang had seen the fear in her eyes for a split second. Her brow furrowed in worry. What the heck had happened? The fear in Sunshine's eyes was bad enough, her hands were covered in bandages. That couldn't be good. But Yang felt like asking a billion questions wasn't the right way to start the conversation. She wanted to put Sunshine at ease first. "Surprise," she said, putting a comedic trill in her voice as she waved her hand in the "jazz hands" fashion. "Thought I would drop by, now that Adrien and I are back in town," she continued as she walked into the room. "How are you holding up?" Obviously, Sunshine wasn't 100% better, since she was still in the hospital. But still, it was a polite thing to ask.

Sunshine managed a smile, albeit a forced one through the pain in her face. The roles were definitely reversed. In a month ag, she had been the one cheering Yang up by drawing goofy shapes and joke battle strategies for getting big orders in the over using spilled flour. Now, she was sitting in a hospital bed with her friend asking how she was. A friend who had gotten back from a romantic rendezvous. Normally, Sunshine would be asking the girlie gossip questions, but she was not in any mood for it. Amid the smile, her face was feeling awful; she hadn't gotten the chance to look in a mirror and see how bad that glass rain had gotten her face. She was pretty sure...
"...Dorian..." she mumbled quietly, barely even making a sound. Wincing, she slumped back onto the pillow, a hand on her face. A shuddering breath escaped her throat.
Another knock came by. Sunshine weakly answered, "Come in."
The unmistakable clink, like a sheriff in a western movie, echoed on the tile floor. Shadow was walking in with a bouquet of red and yellow roses. A red ribbon with a corny 'Get Well Soon' tag kept them in place, and he set them on the table. "Oh. Hey Yang. You two got back from your...." he paused, silently looking at Sunshine, who was keeping her trembling lips up. Red and green eyes locked, and Sunshine whimpered,
"Dorian?"
"He's okay," Shadow promised. "He got hit, too, but he'll survive. And so will you."

Yang glanced up. She thought she heard a name, and it was one she didn't recognize. "Who now?" she asked. Right at that moment though, Shadow entered, complete with a bouquet and a get-well-card to boot. Yang made a mental note to get Sunshine something next time she saw her. She'd been in a rush to get to the hospital as quickly as possible. Most of that was due to her paranoia. She knew that if something really bad had happened to Sunshine, like if she had lost an arm, they'd probably let her know. She'd told herself over and over that it was probably just a standard injury and she'd be back on her feet in no time. Of course, logical reasoning like that wasn't of much use to paranoid thoughts about the number of horrible injuries Sunshine might have suffered. Yang almost felt relieved when the only thing Sunshine had on were bandages. Anything a bandage could help heal probably wasn't permanent. She'd be fine, and Shadow said as much. However, Dorian's name was mentioned again, and Yang wondered who he was. "So...who's this Dorian guy?" she asked.

"He's one of our other assistants," Shadow answered. Telling Yang about other people at work was like giving people a behind-the-scenes tour of the police department. The cops wee the stars, but they had other people to give credit where credit was due. Dorian was one of those select people, as was Elsa for keeping the law on their side. "Something went wrong in the labs. We're trying to piece together what happened...."
Sunshine nodded, her trembling lip gaping wide. Her eyes got glassy; betraying that more tears were going to fall. She was grateful her partner knew when to stop when it came to personal opinions. There was a reason he was her best friend. She should have been grateful that she didn't suffer anything big, and she felt guilty suddenly, remembering Yang and how the girl had her arm cut off just for trying to save a kid. Sunshine had gotten scratched and mauled by a psycho Anna. But Yang had gotten her life together, in a way. It wasn't fair to say the town went to shit. Again.
"I saw her again, Shadow," she openly sobbed. "I saw...Jasmine, and that bitch who ordered them to get me in here. Yang came in and they just...vanished...they just...ran, and I didn't know where they went..."
Shadow's red eyes widened. Jasmine? He didn't want to hear that name in a long while. How did a vampire sneak past security? Someone would have notified him that someone broke in and tried to attack a cop. He had got none of that. But the look in Sunshine's eyes showed that Jasmine was only in her mind.
"Sunshine," he said, "you're my partner, but more important than that is your my friend, and I love you. No one's going to get anywhere close to you, okay? You are safe." He brushed a hair from her eyes. "Yang and I are here. Riku is no doubt blowing up cars to get to you. You're safe."

So even Shadow didn't know exactly what happened. And Sunshine didn't seem to be in a great state to spill the details. Whoever this Jasmine person was, it seemed like Sunshine had just imagined her. Of course, that didn't make her any less real. Yang knew that first hand. When she woke up from a nightmare, she often felt like Thrax or Cinder were right in her room with her. It usually took her a while to calm down and remind herself that it had been a dream. And Shadow was doing that now, reassuring Sunshine that she was safe and that nobody could get to her. However, Yang didn't miss the "I love you" he slipped in there. She glanced at him, wondering if that was as close to a confession as he would get. But her curiosity about Jasmine felt more important at the moment. She had a pretty good idea of who she was, judging by how terrified Sunshine was. "Was Jasmine one of those...vampires?" she asked.

Shadow knew that look Yang was giving him. Yes, he said the three words, and quite frankly, he had meant them but knew Sunshine would take them as the second meaning he implied with them; loving her as his best friend. Regardless, saying them out loud had relieved the huge weight on his chest. No matter how he said them, he had gotten them out. And he did. The second step was actually giving her boyfriend his blessing. Sunshine tensed at the v-word, and he patted her shoulder. As Sunshine answered Yang's question with a silent, sad nod of her head, Shadow was relieved the topic was back to the...dreary, dark past that had brought the two together. "She was the only one we got the name of. We tried to track her down, but given all we had been through it was...well...not the top of our bucket list."

Yang just gave a nod. She could understand that. It was similar to her and Thrax. Finding him hadn't been a personal priority for her. All she wanted was for him to stay as far away from her as possible. Heck, she still wanted that. She didn't want to go near him with a ten foot pole. She may have made progress on some of her fears, but Thrax wasn't one of them. "So Sunshine, Dorian, was anyone else there when something wrong happened at the labs?" she asked. Shadow may not have the details on that, and Dorian was the only person Sunshine had asked about. Maybe it had been just the two of them. Maybe doing some science-y stuff for a case? Things like that tended to go over Yang's head. Looking at blood samples, DNA left at a crime scene, inspecting dead bodies, they sounded simple enough, but they were full of technicalities that Yang didn't understand.

"The only other person who could have been down there was An..."
But just before Shadow could finish saying her name, Sunshine made a noise somewhere between a gasp and a scream. He knew the look on her face well enough. It was the same look she had when they had first met. One thing about Sunshine's face, she was super expressive, unlike him who had just been known for having a perma-glare. Sunshine's green eyes were almost bugging out of her head, and even though he wasn't touching her, he knew she was shuddering. But why would saying Anna's name scare her? It wasn't like Anna was a demon or something.
"Anna?!" Sunshine cried out. "No...no...she...she can't be here! She can't hurt you two!"

Yang felt herself tense up. Shadow hadn't even finished saying Sunshine's name before her eyes went wide and she started shaking. It was a classic response to something that completely and utterly terrified you. But what the hell had happened? Sunshine seemed convinced that Anna was going to hurt them. Yang didn't know the woman well, but Anna was pretty nice, and awfully perky. It was odd, that Sunshine seemed so scared of her. But it was something Yang could relate to. The only problem was, could Sunshine calm down enough to explain what happened? Yang knew that when she got scared, speaking coherently was the last thing on her mind. Some of her friends had been witness to that. Could she and Shadow get Sunshine calm enough to talk? "Hey, hey, it's okay," Yang said, placing a gentle hand on Sunshine's knee. "She's not here. She's not gonna hurt us." She let out a breath, trying to get rid of any sensation of deja vu she was feeling. How many times had she been in Sunshine's position, scared out of her mind and feeling like someone she feared was going to burst through the door at any moment? "Look, did Anna do something at the lab? Was she...responsible for this?" She gestured to Sunshine's injuries. It seemed hard to believe, but if Anna caused these, and Dorian had a similar story, then something bad was going on.

Yang had the exact right idea. if this didn't work, Shadow had the means to go to plan B. Provided Riku was, well, actually on his way, too. Yang was up and comforting Sunshine, placing a consoling hand on Sunshine's knee. The minute Shadow placed his hand on Sunshine;s good shoulder, he felt everything from heat to sweat to chills. Someone who had been in that high state of fear was not in the right mindset to talk, let alone actually be able to explain what Anna had to do with any of this. The connections were vague, if anything. The most they could do right now is console her with soft words and gentle massages. Shadow made a mental note to talk to Dorian when the visit was said and done with. "You're okay," he murmured quietly. "You're safe."

Riku wasn't blowing up cars, but he wasn't using the subway to get there either. His family knew all sorts of tricks to get around quickly. He'd even gone and asked a friend to paint a music box for him in the style of one of Sunshine's paintings. The friend, Bobble, was a whiz at making gizmos, and had always helped Riku making personalized music boxes for his sister and mother. Now, one for sunshine. It was originally intended as a Christmas gift, but she would certainly need cheering up now. He also brought sushi from the place by his apartment. She'd liked that when they had had it during their one case together. He rushed into the room, followed by a mangled looking Dorian holding a drip stand with rollers and in a ragged old blue bathrobe, 1800's brown leather hunting boots, with a fur lining, and plaid pajama pants. His hair was out of the pony and around his shoulders and right side of his face, partially hiding the 'runny glass' look of his face on that side, his lips pulled into a permanent half-smirk and his right eye a milky grey-white. His wings were wrapped carefully in bandages.Riku saw Sunshine trembling in fear and was instantly by her side, holding her hand and putting the bag of present and food on the bedside table while Dorian stood by the door. "They're letting me walk around. Only my wings and face were burned. They can't fix my eye" he explained in a careful monotone as Riku tended to his girlfriend.

Well, ask and you shall be comforted or greeted by those who were being talked about apparently. The door opened in the midst of the comfort. Sunshine looked over Yang's shoulder and tried to force a smile. So he had come after all. And he had a huge box in his hands. She didn't a good look at it until he walked over. She was silent about it. The sweet-salty sushi rice smell enveloped her nose, and she became hungry again. Even better was how he had practically charged into the room and not managed to drop either the box or the sushi until it was by the bedside. That smile became sad as she saw Dorian enter the room. He was ten times worse than she was. Broken wings, which she could heal if she was in her more positive mood; the bandages on his hands from the chemicals and glass rain; the right eye and pernament half-smirk on his face, one eye never being able to work again. Her eyes began stinging and flooding with hot saltwater, even with Riku, Shadow and Yang by her side. She flumped back onto the pillows, a sob escaping her throat, a good long one. "I tried to stop her, Dorian...I really tried...had I not come in none of this would have happened and...I'm so sorry..."
Shadow had stepped aside the minute Riku arrived. She needed him most of all, and it was sheer gratitude that he gave the young Lafayette cop with. The box he had presented her was, well, it was gorgeous. The maker had designed it off od one o the sun motifs in Sunshine's paintings, and, well, it was a music box so of course the song was gorgeous. That looked fell when he looked at Dorian. At least this would change the plans of storming into the forensics room and demanding the truth by force. He folded his arms, and said. "Tell me what happened. But keep it quiet."
