"Marriage seems to be a common topic recently," Yang commented. She'd talked about it with both Aqua and Adrien over the past few weeks. Lucky for her, Adrien had reassured her that they'd do it when they were ready, and that made her feel a little better about it. If there was one thing Adrien would never do, it was pressure her into doing something she didn't want to do. At Shadow's suggestion about inviting some of her other friends over, she said "I'll think about it. But I wouldn't mind a quiet evening with just us. It's been too long." She knew Shadow had at least gotten to a somewhat better place when it came to his feelings for Sunshine and her upcoming marriage with Riku. But he'd always been the loner sort and she worried about him being alone too much. She didn't want him feeling like the third wheel all the time.

An eyebrow was raised in her direction. She had been discussing marriage, too? But instead of talking it to the ground, Shadow chose to leave it alone. Everyone had a right to talk to getting with their love interest. He would never have that chance, so to be condescending about it wasn’t fair. He swallowed his mouthful, forcing back every negative thought he had. He was here to chat with Yang, not wallow in self pity. That got pushed aside to surprise when Yang said she was fine hanging out with just the two of them. “Thanks.”

Yang saw Shadow's raised eyebrow and immediately said "Relax, me and Adrien aren't gonna, like, elope over the weekend or something. We're taking our sweet time." Shadow would be lucky if he could get through Sunshine and Riku's wedding in one piece. Or, without drowning himself in alcohol. Yang didn't even want to think about him suffering through hers and Adrien's. He'd probably feel he permanently belonged in the "singles" group forever. She wondered if maybe Jane could help him deal with that. They were hanging out a bit lately, and Jane was one of the few friends Yang had that was still single. He seemed surprised when she said she wouldn't mind just the two of them hanging out, and she gave a smile after he thanked her. "No problem," she said. "After all, what kind of girlfriend would I be if I just pushed all my friends by the wayside?" She'd seen some girls do that: throw away all their friends and just hang out with their guy exclusively. Yang had never seen the point in that. She felt like she'd found a healthy balance between the two.

An approving nod came from Shadow. Good. Yang was mature enough to know her limits. Besides, he was happy for both her and Adrien. They deserved each other. He wasn’t going to let his self pity get in the way of others happiness. And he wasn’t used to someone calling him a friend. Ally, yes. Partner, yes. The last person who said he was his friend was Omar. Sunshine had said it, too. Yang was putting herself in there?

Shadow was quiet, but Yang knew he'd taken her words to heart. She and her friends had been through so much, especially in the past year. Didn't they all deserve a little happiness? She wasn't sure how much she could do when it came to helping Shadow feel happy, but she'd try her best. She didn't want anyone falling into that awful spiraling depressing she'd felt after first losing her arm. She'd felt like everything was so hopeless, and she'd had little to no faith in herself. It had taken her a long time to get where she was today. And she knew she'd be recovering from her loss for the rest of her life. But she felt like she could handle it if she had her friends with her. She finished off the last of her pizza, giving a contented sigh. "I know pizza's bad for you and everything, but man, does it feel good," she said with a grin.

Well, apparently Yang's appetite was bigger than Shadow's, because her slice was gone in a matter of seconds. He still had his at the quarter mark, and that wasn't counting the crust. She lamented the unhealthiness of pizza and he followed suit. The ravenous bite betrayed his lack of eating, even with Jane's help. "Tell me about it. Jane may have gotten some Thai in me, but I needed a bit more...fat so to speak." He had noticed the weight loss recently. Given his small stature, it was hard to miss, but he could tell there was something up from his extreme fights. He was getting some muscle back from training yard exercises, but it wasn't his best shape.

"Honestly, the fact that Jane's become friends with you still boggles my mind," Yang said. "I mean, she hated cops even more than I did." Of course, Jane did have a pretty good reason for hating them. A mistake on their part had kept her away from her dad for years. That was almost as bad as what Yang had gone through. And Jane had held onto her grudge far longer than Yang had. If they weren't already close friends, she might have had more of a problem with Yang becoming an officer. But now here she was, hanging out with Shadow on a semi-regular basis. Yang was glad that Jane was coming around, if only slightly. And she was happy that Shadow had found another friend.

"Oh, she still hates them. According to her, I'm the only one she likes, well besides you." He was blunt about it, but it was true. He set his crumb-laden plate aside, happy that something heavy was starting to settle in his stomach. Besides, the reason for her hatred was understandable. Shadow had started hunting for the one who abused his priveleges and stripped the LaRues apart. He argued it had been a crime that went unnoticed for a while and while the tracks were covered well, he was getting enough information to bring the guy in. "I should introduce her to Sunshine. If they don't get along, then I've lost the bet on her befriending most of whom she meets."

Shadow did have a point. Yang doubted Jane was going to become friends with any other of the Others Unit members right now, like Dimitri or Pitch. Although, if anyone on the team could be friends with her, it would be Sunshine. The blonde had a way of easily making friends, mainly due to her infectious happy nature. It was just hard not to smile when she was around. "Sunshine would probably be the only other person getting through Jane's grudge right now," she agreed. "Although at this rate, Jane might get convinced that we're trying to get her to be pals with the whole Unit," she added jokingly. Of course, that wasn't really what was going on, but Yang felt like she might get along with some of the other members once she got past the fact that they were cops. Dimitri was easy-going and laid-back, especially compared to his brother. Aqua and Riku were nice once they let their barriers down. Although Aqua was a whole other kettle of fish when it came to Jane. Not only was the fairy a cop, she was dating Jane's dad. No doubt that was doubly awkward. "Do you know how she's dealing with...you know, the whole Aqua and Omar thing?" she asked. Yang hadn't questioned her friend too deeply about it, mainly because she wanted to avoid any arguments about it. Yang would defend Aqua's character to the end, but if Jane wasn't willing to see the best in her right now, it could lead to some conflict between them.

Shadow snickered. Jane with everyone who she had declared her worst enemies. That would be a great irony. But, if she could see past the badge, maybe Jane would find some great friends. The last thing he needed was for Jane to become a hermit and only go out to hunt or help the kids learn. But there was another hurdle to get over, and it was a hurdle Yang brought up. Right. Aqua and Omar were an item, and considering Omar nearly got beaten to a pulp by the Seelies, there was some...well...unpleasant thoughts for them in Jane's head. Shadow slouched, tracing a ring of condensationt hat had dripped onto the table. "Let's just say she's keeping her mouth shut about it for Omar's sake, but she's clearly not happy. I didn't push it."

Yang sighed. "I guess I shouldn't have expected her to be 100% cool with it," she said. "I guess I just kind of naively wish that all my friends can get along." She doubted it would ever happen though. Just because a friend of Yang's liked her didn't mean that they'd like everyone she hung out with. Jane and Aqua were prime examples of that. Heck, even before that, there was all the tension between Shadow and Pitch. Yang didn't know if that could ever be fixed. Shadow wasn't the forgiving sort, and Pitch didn't seem to be the type either. But, they both had connections to Yang now, and that meant interacting with each other every now and again on the job. She was quiet for a moment before she tentatively asked "Is it ever awkward being friends with me sometimes? Now that I'm...Pitch's partner and all?"

Shadow looked at Yang wistfully. "You and Sunshine have that in common, you know." He had been realistic about relationships and how people viewed each other. How past hurts could affect what people thought. He hated reporters because someone twisted his actions or misspoke truths. He hated mankind because of what they did to Maria. But Sunshine had been more the optimist, praying people would get along with each other. He realized, it was what Maria had wanted too. But the naivety of a twelve year old girl was different than the dreams and ideas of someone older. Yang was hesitant to ask about what he thought of her being Pitch's partner, and he answered, "To be honest, when I'm hanging out with you, I push all thoughts of Pitch out of my mind. So no, it's never awkward being friends with you. Even before you joined the force, I looked past your record and wanted to look at you as the person you were. I'd rather focus on our friendship then connections." He was civil to Pitch despite his dislike of the Demon, both for Yang's sake and because it was the right thing to do.

"I guess her optimism's rubbed off on me," Yang said, smiling a little. In a perfect world, all her friends would get along. But, the world would never be perfect, so she'd just have to change what she could and accept that the rest was out of her hands. If her friends had grudges against each other, she couldn't fix them on her own. They had to want to change too. Some people hit that point, others never did. Shadow's response to her question gave her some relief, although she still wondered if him and Pitch could ever move on from what happened in the past. "He's not too bad, you know," she said, gazing thoughtfully up at him. "A little stiff and somber sometimes, but not horrible." Pitch was good at what he did. He could get inside criminals' minds, and he had the power to take them down. The commissioner had thought to combine that power with Yang's, to make a formidable duo out of the two of them.

Shadow glared at the water drops. He knew what Yang was trying to do. She was trying to have him see the good in her partner. He just said he disconnected every thought of him away when they were hanging out, so why bring him up? He was no longer looking at her and holding back that intense anger he had. Pitch had ruined his life just like the humans did. Why did Yang have to defend him? Stiff and somber was all he ever would be. He could try to change, say he had 'reformed', but until he openly gave Shadow back his memories - CLEANED - then there was no positivity. He grabbed a napkin to mop it up, choosing to use the frustration to fuel that. Taking his anger out on Pitch's partner, who also happened to be one of Shadow's few friends, was unwarranted. Worse, his anger would get Disparion back on his tail and into his head. Yang didn't deserve any of that.

Shadow didn't say anything, but Yang could see the change in his demeanor. Even the most oblivious person could see the anger in his eyes, in his movements. His hatred towards Pitch hadn't diminished one bit, and Yang knew she had crossed a line. She knew Shadow wasn't necessarily mad at her, but arms still curled reflexively around herself, as they tended to do when she felt nervous. She knew how fierce Shadow's angry side could be, and she didn't want to be on the receiving end of it. "I'm...sorry," she said, her voice quiet. "I won't bring it up again."
