He almost spat out his wine right then and there. She had to have had too much. Once he got over the shock of what she said, he would insist the stay the night. Not with him personally, but where he could keep her safe. He sipped his wine again, letting the thoughts of being told she liked him sink in. Jane liked him. Shadow had no one tell them to his face that they liked him. He looked at her flushed face. She was honestly kind of cute with how she was trying to hide her embarrassment. Any time she lowered her defenses, it made her...
"Well, has anyone told you that you're beautiful when you aren't putting up a front?"

"I..."
That had caught her off guard completely. She truly hadn't expected that. But honestly, it shouldn't have surprised her. Shadow was good at doing things to things that she least expected. She looked at the last of the wine in her cup. Then she decided to finish her drink and put her glass aside. No more tonight. Otherwise she would make an even bigger fool of herself than she already had.
"No one has ever called me beautiful." she admitted.

"It's the truth."
Well, he would have to use it more often then. Because the more he put Sunshine out of his mind, the more he could look at other girls. Jane was actually very attractive with her dark hair and light eyes. At least she was putting down the wine bottle. Good. Because if she had drunk anymore he would have had to call an Uber. Or he could have just dropped her off at her house. He did have her address after all. He stacked some of the empty Thai boxes and tossed them in the trash.

"Maybe we both had too much wine," Jane deflected.
Her face felt far too hot and her head was swimming. She was blaming it on the wine, not the fact she was probably blushing because Shadow was flirting. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to do in this situation. She had been flirting back before. But now that he was clearly and obviously flirting with her, it made her realize she liked him. Perhaps more than she had originally thought. His flirting (even though it lacked tact and grace) left her innards writhing with nerves.

"No, you've had enough. Any more and I may go Magic Mike," Shadow fought back.
Well he hadn't been able to throw the card before he had the Sapien rings, but it just shot out. That one he would try to blame on the booze. But he blamed the fact that, well, he actually was starting to like her. She had been flirting with him, and he in return was firing back flirtations. Nothing in the bullshit department either. He was combining flirts with truths. True-flirting? He didn't know.

"What do you know? Dinner and a show," Jane said.
She wanted to scream at herself. That was a bad idea, very bad idea. School teachers did not go around encouraging cops to drink and strip. She certainly had too much to drink if she was actually entertaining the idea. Though it seemed like her entire evening had been littered with bad ideas from tracking down Shadow's address, to showing up unannounced, to bribing him with food and booze. There was no doubt in her mind that he likely had better things to do than to keep her from going on a bender.

Shadow laughed. “Teachers have to have something to think about besides grades.”
Jane had a rough week. Seeing her smile was worth it. She wasn’t like Sunshine who would grin and find the bright light in every detail. He found getting a smile a challenge. She knew by now he never said no to a challenge. If it was a serial killer taunting the public or getting someone to lighten up, he never backed from a challenge. Chivalry may have been dead, but Shadow never disrespected those who were hurting.

"You're the worst," she complained.
She didn't mean it. Still, it colored her cheeks and made her question herself all over again. She scrubbed a hand over her face. They were drunk and both proposing crazy things because they were under the influence, right? It was just the booze talking. She was overly imagining this. That had to be it. She was just confused or... was it that she was just too drunk? It wouldn't be the first time. Shadow wasn't flirting, right? Her head throbbed in response as if to tell her that wasn't the case.
"I... should probably get home." she said.

“Not with your head as foggy as it is now,” Shadow insisted. “Getting drunk in front of a cop? Then suggesting you drive? No. The good news is I’m not on duty to force fines. The better news is I’ll take care of you.”
As he said this, he was fishing out the blanket that he often had wrapped himself in if he couldn’t sleep in the bed. Jane was not in the right mind to get home. The flirts were coming to a stop, replaced by a chivalrous desire to ensure she was comfortable. He arranged it around her, walking to rinse out her glass and fill it with water. It would prevent a hangover.

"I didn't say anything about driving," she said.
And yet, Shadow was already taking her glass and wrapping her up like some fragile glass doll. The blanket he draped over her smelled dizzyingly like him. Her hands went around the fabric and she held it a little closer. She took the glass back, looking down at the water that now filled the cup. Even though she had been nothing but a burden this evening, he was still trying to take care of her. She wasn't sure how to feel about that. She was so used to standing on her own two feet and taking care of herself. Of being the responsible one.
"I can't stay here tonight," she tried to protest.

“Jane. Humor me?”
She was an adult, but sometimes adults needed to be supported and cared for. Shadow admired her resolve, but her stubbornness was going to get her hurt. He wasn’t planning anything funny. All he wanted was for her to be safe. He compiled one box of Thai for her, storing it in the fridge while putting his share in the vegetable drawer.
“I don’t want other things taking advantage of you. Lilith did once already.”

With a reason like that, it was hard to say no. She didn't want to run into Lilith again on the streets. The woman already singled her out once, what if the second time was to finish the job? Either way, she found herself relaxing. Still, she felt a pang of guilt for taking advantage of his hospitality like that. He already opened his home to her. He humored her by letting her rant about students and fights and temper tantrums. Then there were the mixed feelings she had for him, the fact she 'shouldn't' like him but she did. Perhaps more than she was willing to admit but it was clear in her alcohol fogged brain.
"Okay..." she relented.

Well, it seemed he had gotten to her logical side. Shadow was relieved she had a logical side with the wine she had drunk. He hadn't forgotten she admitted that she liked him. He liked her, too, now that he gotten to know her as a stubborn woman that would put her life on the line to protect children. He adjusted the blanket so she was comfortable. The thought of Lilith hurting her scared him as well. Yes, he was able to protect Jane from drunkards and other monsters, but a demon that could bend reality, he didn't want to admit it, but not even he could stand up to that.

She felt like glass, some porcelain doll, that Shadow was tending to in order to make sure she didn't break. She felt her throat tighten up. No one treated her that way. Her over abundant confidence and rude mouth often kept others away. And yet, Shadow stayed. It was all so overwhelming. She would have no time to think this over, especially if she was going to be staying at his place tonight.
"I can crash on the couch." she told him. "I should have been watching how much I drank..."

"I'm partially to blame, too. In the future, I'll be looking out around that bottle."
Note to self, keep a lock and key on his booze. He had cut back his drinking habits ever since he had been forced to open the gates of hell by the beginning of summer. He had to keep his mind sharp and not clouded with the effects of booze. Especially when there were people he was trying to protect. In his widest dreams, he had never expected Jane to have been one of them.
"And hey, don't be afraid to help yourself to food or whatever. If you need anything just holler."
