"Oh, and don;t worry about paying out the whazoo for coffee," Sunshine chimed in now sitting fully upright. The Nevermore kiosk would be in full bloody swing with people getting their caffeine fixes. Maybe, if she asked sweetly, she could get coffee pulsed directly into her and Yang's bloodstreams. But would that affect the metal arm? Yeah, never mind, best not to risk it. But she could make the promise she could keep. "I'll make sure we get monster tanks refilled. On me. No charge to the police department." She took another sip of hazelhut coffe and slammed down, doing her best Viking accent by crying, "Another!"

Yang snickered at Sunshine's Viking impersonation. She could always count on her friend's funny personality to bring her out of whatever gloomy thoughts were circling in her head. Yang just hoped that she was helping Sunshine feel better too. The blonde had been looking pretty morose when she'd first walked through the door. Maybe if they were cheered up a bit, they could tackle the danger looming over them with a bit more drive. "Nothing like coffee to get us through the apocalypse," she said. "And attempting to look on the bright side of things." Her finger idly traced a circle against the table as she spoke. "I know some people may think it's a dumb mental state to have, since it's the end of the world and all. But if don't have even some hope, we're not gonna be able to fix what's happened."

“Speaking of hope, is the gang okay?” By gang, Sunshine meant the kids her friend had been driven to protect. They had reunited parents and lost children, and some were adopted by kind families. The end of world probably put a damper in some of the family lives. The kids needed to be okay, and hopefully Yang was still in contact with the adults. Hope was something everyone needed, and who was more hopeful for the future than children? No matter how jaded they would seem.

"They were hanging in there, last I checked," Yang replied. "Louie's family has seen a few monsters, but they haven't tried to get into the house yet. I told them to head to Adrien's place if they needed too. Jenny's doing okay, although her mom says she's been trying to pick up stray animals so they don't get eaten or anything." That had made Yang laugh a little bit. In a way, she probably should have expected Jenny to try and save what animals she could. She still remembered her making deals with the mice living in the old movie theater, promising to give them some snacks every so often if they didn't steal the rest of the food Yang had stashed away. "I haven't had a chance to talk to Cody and Penny yet. I'm not sure if I should. I mean, they're way over in New Orleans. It's not like they can help much right now." If worst came to worst and the monsters started to spread out, she'd probably give Cody and Penny's grandma a heads-up so they could evacuate. But in the meantime, she didn't want them to worry.

Sunshine was relieved. Kids were the path to the future, and if the world was in an end, the last place she wanted them to be was an environment full of monsters. New Orleans had been one of the lucky cities, according to police reports; the spread of evil hadn't gotten to them. It meant Cody and Penny were probably safe. The river city had been set as an evacuation point for people from Bellerouge. Sunshine had seen many a bus go down the freeway filled with people who lost their homes. "Jenny's a brave girl. We need to trust our lot animals to someone."

Yang laughed. "She certainly has a way with them. Although being able to talk with them certainly helps." Having a power like that was always a bonus, but Yang liked to think that it was Jenny's kind nature that attracted animals to her, not just her ability to communicate with them. "I just hope Louis doesn't get overwhelmed by all the emotions that are running high right now. Being an empath during a crisis probably isn't fun." She remembered Louis acting pretty concerned whenever he sensed her sadness. She couldn't imagine what it was like to feel all the fear and panic that was running through everyone. Hopefully, Anita and Roger would make sure he was alright.

Sunshine managed a smile. "I have to say, I'm jealous of that ability; the animal speaking, not the empathy, I mean poor Louie. I've always wanted to know what animals would say if they could speak." Part of her had been tempted to ask Riku for a pet of their own, but did voodoos require familiars? It wasn't like average witchcraft like she had seen other people in Bellerouge had asked of. This town was not Salem, but some people considered it second best in regards to witchcraft. What would she even have as a familiar?

"It would be pretty interesting," Yang agreed. "I think I'll just stick with making fireballs though. One superpower is enough for me." She was kind of lucky, in that regard. Some half-breeds had a whole slew of powers that were jumbled inside them and made things pretty confusing. She couldn't imagine what it'd be like if she was something like a werewolf/phoenix hybrid. Shooting fireballs and turning into a wolf under the full moon? It'd probably be crazy as hell. Of course, some were better at handling it than others. Adeline had witch and demon stuff going on, but she seemed to have a pretty good handle on it, most of the time.

"Weird questions coming your way, and uh, don't be offended by them." When it came to discussing supernatural people, there were some ground rules. [rimary examples were don't ask a werewolf to bone you if they were going to turn. That had been one of her most awkward cases when she was still a rookie on the force. Shadow had laughed to the bank when he heard what she had to do. She cleared her throat; they were all adults. "Since phoenixes are traditionally birds, how were you...um...conceived?"

"Eh, weird questions I can deal with," Yang replied as she folded her hands behind her head. However, once Sunshine actually asked her "weird question" she blinked in surprise. She hadn't exactly expected that. Then again, she could see why Sunshine would be curious. "I didn't hatch out of an egg, if that's what you're wondering," she said with a grin. "My mom had a human form, so she used that to give birth to me." She paused for a moment before adding "She was in her human form most of the time, as far as I remember. Made it a little easier to do day-to-day things in than if she was a flame-covered bird." Looking like a human just made it a little easier to do stuff like go to work, head to the grocery store, pick Yang up from school. Yang had seen her mother's bird form a few times though, and it had always been amazing to watch. She had looked so graceful and strong, it was no wonder why her father had fallen so hard for her.

"Okay, good, I never took your mom as a 'Leda and the Swan' types." Granted Sunshine never had the chance to meet Yang's parents. But hearing the story of how people in this town met when they were supernatural always astounded her. She had always read about the stuff in books or fairy tales. It took being literally kidnapped by vampires for her to see the truth about it. Her mom sounded like a person she would have liked; having so much power but had chosen to keep it on the DL so as to avoid people getting hurt. "Did you inherit stuff like healing tears? Just curious? Super Saiyan hair is just one aspect," she laughed.

Yang had to snicker at that. "Thank God my parents' relationship wasn't quite as dramatic as Greek myths," she said. There was no forbidden romance, no wondering about whether them being different species could cause complications. Their relationship just sort of...happened. At Sunshine's other question though, she shook her head. "Just the fire powers," she replied. Although, if she was honest, she'd admit that she'd wondered more than once if her mom's "immortality" had ever played a role in her life. She highly doubted she could be reborn from ashes or anything, but some people had wondered if it was her phoenix blood that had helped her survive after her arm had been cut off. Maybe instead of being immortal, she was just hard to kill. Of course, that could have also been luck. Tons of people had survived losing a limb without being part phoenix. And she didn't exactly want to test how much she could survive before finally kicking the bucket.

Sunshine laughed. Greek mythology, or any mythology in that matter, tended to go to the wayward. She and Riku had many a conversation about the truth of some myths qwhen they were home. It made dinner conversations vary from talking about border patrol by the darkness to how kids of a deity inherited certain powers. It was the first time she was talking to one of her best friends about this. Her friend who had blood based on a bird that gave itself a life-death cycle when it felt sick. Yang hadn't done that. but she had come out of the ashes figuratively. Her arm had been severed and she should have died of blood loss. Instead, she was fine. Or was it luck. Eh, it didn't matter, she was still the same Yang. "Fire powers that did awesome in keeping hot chocolate hot. I always had wondered if my sun powers influenced heat. Never experimented,"

"It is nice to have if our flashlights don't work," Yang joked. Still, at least Sunshine's powers weren't explosive, literally. Yang had lost all control only once, and the results had been pretty catastrophic. She didn't want to repeat it a second time. Heck, she didn't want to even think about what might even trigger a second time. Maybe if she lost someone else close to her. If they didn't reach Shadow in time...Yang let out a sigh. It'd be like losing her parents all over again. She didn't want that to happen. And while she may not be the best at solving this puzzle he left behind, she could at least make the apocalypse a little more bearable until Sunshine or someone else did. "I should probably head back out," she said as she stood up. "Maybe check the next block over. God forbid these monsters destroy ever department store in the area or something." She looked back at Sunshine. "Get some food in you. Can't find Shadow on an empty stomach, you know." She gave a little smile.

'Talk about promoting solar power," Sunshine said with a laugh. Her green eyes locked onto Yang's lavender ones, and the familiarity and kindredness billowed in her heart. It was as warm as a phoenix's fire. Yang was one of the few people that had been comforting and warm to her. The other had been Riku, and then her mother. She had all this support and she had taken it all for granted. Guilt was settling in. She had to get them back somehow. Yang said she had to get back to work, and Sunshine remembered, she had a very important phone call to make. "I'll catch up with you, maybe buy you a pastry as a thanks for cheering me up. I've got someone to contact." She sat up and went to the back room, dialing a number she had only used once on her wedding planning. "Hey, Red? It's Rachel Seddon..." ((End thread))
