There was never a better smell in the entire world than the smell of a fresh pizza being brought out. Between the herbs in the sauce and the molten cheese, still bubbling like some kind of milky lava, his stomach gurgled. Jane let go of his hands, suggesting they dig in. He picked up the server and attempted to scoop one slice out. Much to his dismay, the piece split completely in half as he lifted it with the crust end winding up on his plate and the goopy triangular point of the slice hovering at a tantalizing reach.

Jane's expression softened. She unrolled her cutlery and with her fresh fork, scooped up Shadow's lost toppings. She placed them onto his plate. She was a little more careful when bringing her pizza slice to her plate. She brought her plate to the platter and brought it over. Her napkin was placed in her lap. The wafting scent of cheese and garlic swirled around them. Pizza like this should be illegal it was so good.
"At least we know it's fresh," she said, trying to make light.

"True," the chuckle he emitted was weak, but it was a start.
This was exactly how Sunshine talked to him. Trying to make a situation light after incredible dire cases. He would attempt to imitate the method, but it didn't seem as natural coming from him. Jane was doing it...naturally like it was no big deal. The napkin rolled like a broken sushi roll on her side and looked at her quizzically
"Don't tell me you're a knife and fork pizza eater.."

"As if!" she scoffed, as if offended.
She picked up her pizza slice and took a hearty bite, nearly burning her tongue for her bravado but making her point. She was not one of those types of people. Still, the taste of the hot greasy pizza was almost enough to make her groan in delight and her eyes roll back in her head. Almost. She did remember Shadow was right there and it was undignified to just succumb to caveman talk just because Tony's made some kick ass pizza.
"You already passed the 'weird topping test'," she teased.

Shadow's laugh was louder and far more genuine than the deadpan chuckle that he had been uttering at things that were making him laugh before. The blob of cheese and toppings were practically glued to her slice. A string from his attempt to pick up the slice, with pepperoni bits strung like a necklace, taunted him. He unapologetically snagged it and slurped it. Well, so long as she didn't mind having unladylike behaviors around jhim, he might as well follow suit.
"Sunshine loves Hawaiian. She gets teased a lot for it...I...tend to do the most."

"Hey!" she half heartedly protested when he snagged some straggling cheese bit. "Get your own!"
She waved her hand at him as if to brush him aside. There was more than plenty to go around, but she was just giving him a hard time. She liked hearing Shadow laugh. More than she should probably care to admit. He hadn't exactly shown any interest in her. They were just... casual friends? Right? They ran into each other more often than not. Most of their run-ins weren't even planned. The small town syndrome except it was quite a large city.
"You two are really close," she commented.

"Geez, just because my basis is a rodent doesn't mean you have to treat me like one," he retorted, triumphantly holding up the remnant of cheese.
Just what he needed. A sarcastic duel, and this time with someone other than demons that wanted to eat his face. And an unexpected run-in with someone that he kept seeing. Bellerouge wasn't as big as New Orleans or Baton Rouge, but the size was roughly the same as some of the smaller towns in Texas. And the last time he was there had been to study a chupacabra attack. Or at least, an assumed one.
"She's my best friend," he said bluntly. "Like the sister I never had."

"I'm protective of my food!" she replied.
There was plenty of food. She didn't have to hoard what she had, but, it was the fact that Shadow felt comfortable to steal what was almost on her plate. It was an intimate thing that her parents used to do. Teasing glances, flirty comments that used to make Jane and her brother pretend to wretch and those loving looks. She wondered if her mother had ever felt this way when her father looked at her. She supposed she'd never get to ask now.
"A sister?" she inquired.

"News flash: You're protective of everything!" he retorted. He softened, "but you have good reason."
They had only taken two out of the eight slices that made up the pie, plenty for them all. This didn't count the cheese he had unapologetically stolen...off her plate. When did he gather this boldness when it came to, well, flirting? Was that what he was doing? Flirting? Dimitri had always said he was a bad flirt, but what would he say seeing this now? He swallowed his bite, letting the spice roll up his throat, and answered Jane's obvious inquiry.
"She reminded me so much of Maria when we first met. But then as I got to know her, we sort of forged this connection, and I saw her as the feisty optimist she is. I..." he looked down at a pepperoni, oddly shaped like a heart, "I'd be lying if I didn't say I fell for her at one point, but we both agreed that we were better off friends."

"It's mostly just people," Jane admitted.
She would do anything for the important people of her life. Namine was one of them. As was her father. She supposed Aqua and Adrien had become close too. And Yang. Then there was Shadow. There was something different when it came to him. She certainly didn't want to delve deeper because then she might start getting ideas or thinking things that just weren't true.
"And you're okay that she's married now?"

"People who are important to you. I've seen you go ape when someone dares insult Omar's music," he pointed out.
The saying 'if mom's not happy, no one's happy' went the extra mile with Jane. Not only were people not happy, but they were downright peeing their pants or feeling sorry for themselves. There would be the occasional jackass who felt nothing when she got on them, but it was rare. He pulled out another slice and plopped it onto his plate.
"Riku's a good man. He'll protect her. Plus the upside to being a cop, discrete background checks," he snickered.

"That's because they have no taste in music!" Jane protested.
She might have gone a little overboard that time, but the guy had been extremely rude for no reason. Her dad had been right that he hadn't been worth her time to yell at but... still, it was her dad. She only wanted the best for the man. Even if he did on occasion act like a child and make her want to scream. She loved her father as most children did their fathers. Save for two little blonds she knew.
"Hey... Can I cash in a favor when Namine starts dating?" she joked.

Shadow held up his hands with a defensive back off. Jane defended her father with so much love and passion, and a part of him felt jealous. There was no family for him to defend by blood. Jane asked if he could look at Namime's potential beaus, and as an answer, he shot her a discerning wink.
"You didn't hear any gossip from me," he joked.

Jane smiled. She could count on Shadow. He was good on his word and had always pulled through for her. She just... never imagined that she would rely on a cop before. But Shadow was different compared to the others. He didn't put up with her bullshit and he helped her. She felt her throat tighten. An emotional wave washed over her. She bit her lip to try and keep from laughing.
"She doesn't have anyone looking at her, but... She's such a sweet girl. I'd hate for anyone to try to take advantage of her."

"She has a whole army looking after her behind the scenes. Sunshine likes her."
If he said that Namine was the spitting image of Maria, and that was why he was liking her, he would have sounded like an absolute freak. Besides, he liked Namine as a person, not as someone he wanted to take to dinner. Which...he and Jane had been doing unintentionally. He had also been bad at spying on Jane while he was trapped in purgatory with Maria. How would he have sounded if he admitted that? Like a stalker?
