Through the curtain of her chocolate brown hair, he saw the slight trace of pink appear on her cheeks. Not counting the red face she got from when they drank together, Shadow had never seen Jane blush before. He also hated how this scene must have looked. A schoolteacher sitting across from...well, a creature made from different borrowed parts. Society called them homunculus, but he was pretty sure another word was going to get lumped in there.
"Yeah, well the world needs more teachers like you. Not every teacher would pull out a gun to blow away monsters. It's, no, you're...amazing."

Jane wasn't used to people giving her praise. Normally they scolded her for her temper or her otherwise bad attitude towards anyone that wasn't under the age of 18. She dared a glance up at him and squirmed when she realized he was being dead serious. While her actions might have earned respect from the parents who sent their children to her, there were plenty more who never wanted their sons or daughters to grow up to be like her. She was far too wild. Far too unruly. She was standoffish and difficult.

He was starting to like this softer side to Jane that he was seeing. Yes, he liked the tough girl who wasn't afraid to shoot a rampaging alligator monster, but he also really liked this shyer side. No doubt, there had been some crying children who had gone for her to comfort them whenever the makeshift classroom shifted from an attack going on outside. One kid that had been safe in her eyes may grow up to aspire to be a protector like her.

"Did you get hit on the head when you were away?" she asked. "Because I'm pretty sure I'm not a good role model."
She tried to smile, trying to tease about it. Shadow was probably just confused. She was just doing her job. With Shadow going on about what a good person she was, it made her feel like she really wasn't. She had been harsh and unforgiving at times. Not to mention her own prejudices that she tried not to pass onto her students. But sometimes it wasn't as easy. It was why she had asked Shadow to come in and talk to the students. So they could see not all cops were big and bad and scary.

That didn’t change his earliest statement at all. Hard knocks were always difficult to go through, and he wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Else in the world. Jane has been through enough from both her heritage and the power hungry dick who ripped her away from her family. She hadn’t used the hard upbringing as an excuse either.

Shadow could't have meant what he said. This was the guy who was in love with Sunshine after all. And who wouldn't when she was so bright and... welcoming. Jane was the opposite of that. So Shadow really had to be mixed up if he thought Jane was anything like Sunshine. She wasn't even blonde. So clearly, Shadow was confused and wasn't thinking straight.

He frowned deeper. The last thing he needed was making her feel worse. Even when they were literally eating a meal together that would constitute sharing. This wasn't a date, though, since Jane did pay, But she paid for them both, so...was this a date? Shadow was trying not to go that mindset, but the thing was...he liked it.

Jane scrubbed a hand over her face. Things were... weird between them now that Shadow had started flirting but that was only because Jane herself was confused about her feelings for him and his feelings for her. If there was one thing Jane disliked it was being uncertain of herself. If she were honest, she liked Shadow. It's why she was more than a little happy to see him after all this time. However, she wasn't sure how to feel because after he came back, he didn't come to see her himself. Not that she was the most personable around police officers.
"Shadow... what are we doing?" she asked.

“Making up for things left unsaid, I think...”
That was the only answer Shadow had. There as the guilt he hadn’t gone to her before he brought about the end of the world. Now here he was flirting with her. He was growing to like the half troll. Was it bad to say she was helping him move on from Sunshine? Even hearing his partner and former crush was pregnant hadn’t hurt him.
“I’m sorry I didn’t come find you when I came back...I’m sorry I wasn’t there to protect you. You needed me and I disappeared. There’s no excuse.”

Jane knew she was probably staring at him open mouthed in dumbfounded shock. No one protected her. She was tough and could stand on her own so she didn't need anyone to. Or so everyone thought. Shadow was cutting past every defense she put up to keep others out - to keep them from hurting her. And yet he saw through her as if there weren't walls around her and there weren't her defenses. She shivered.

He couldn’t help his physical appearance. Even with sapien, he was aware of how he looked.

She wouldn't look at him. Looking directly at him would probably cause her face to spontaneously combust from sheer embarrassment. Yes, she had been a real hard ass on him at first. She had been mean and bitter and cruel to any cop that had the unfortunate luck to cross her path. But then her dad started dating Aqua and Yang became a cop. She started to spend more time around Shadow... Things were different from then versus now. These police officers never would have shoved an unfortunate little girl into the system just so they didn't have to do paperwork.

Shadow's cheeks flamed. How did he look blushing while stuck in his humanoid appearance? Scary? The heat he felt was not unpleasant, rather he felt...was timid the right word choice? Jane was pointedly looking away from him, which gave him another chance to snag another slice. Half of the pizza was consumed by them, and the garlic knots had a reasonably sized dent in them. He'd be working out for a good long while to burn off all of the carbs.

She felt like such a child. Of course he didn't dislike her. He was eating with her wasn't he? It's not like he didn't have his own job and was just tolerating her for free food. And of course flirting. Was it possible for your brain to melt out of your head because of blushing? She hoped not. It would be a very embarrassing way to go. One that should be reserved for her dad's girlfriend. Or... flirt? Fling?

Shit. Did he just ask Jane out? Like on a date date? What was going on with him?! He had been through the literal bowels of purgatory picking through darkness and death, and now he was asking a girl that he...didn't necessarily hate out. He had told Jenna that he didn't feel anything for her...was it because he was starting to feel something for Jane?
