Jane smiled at the mere thought of how many people that Namine had in her corner. She had been through enough on her own. It was nice to know she had people who loved her enough to look out for her. Better yet for Jane to know that Shadow was willing to look out for the meek little blonde. Namine had made leaps and bounds in the confidence department, however, she was still not bold enough to stand up for herself the way her old cop coworkers did.
"Oh, if Sunshine likes her then Namine must be on her way to sainthood," Jane teased.

“Sunshine is nowhere near a god, but good to know people think she is. Hopefully, it doesn’t go to her head.”
He tossed aside a crust. If it weren’t greased where it shone like a runway model, he would have devoured it. But as is, the pretzel rolls at Nevermore were a more promising carb intake. God, it was funny how looking at stuff in the depths of the underworld made someone look at things in the realm of light differently

"Um, half the town is practically wrapped around her little finger. It's hard not to like her." Jane said.
Though she never personally met Sunshine, she only heard good things about the woman. The ambitious baker-cop had left her students impressed. Declaring that some day they would be ballerina-astronauts or doctor-wizards. And with someone who inspired the kids, it was hard not to like them. It didn't matter that Jane had never met her. Jane dunked her garlic knot in marinara sauce before popping it in her mouth and chewing thoughtfully.

"Oh, there a few people that don't. Bloodsuckers have her as enemy number one. Especially one of them."
When Sunshine told him that she was being stalked by a vampire named Jasmine, who was mad that she killed her mate, his instant protective senses went into overdrive. It had been years since the vampire abduction, but she still carried the fear within her. Out of respect, he always turned down vampire-slaying missions the Others Unit assigned them. He picked up a garlic knot and pulled at it, watching the butter-garlic painted dough pull apart seductively. Food porn at its finest.

"There are very few good vampires," Jane pointed out.
Some vampires were decent folks. They went on and became doctors and studied blood, despite the fact it was technically food to them, but improper blood transfusions were now a thing of the past. Most vampires didn't even drink blood without permission these days. But there were those who... were less inclined to follow 'human rules' and polite society. They did what they wanted, where they wanted and drank however much they wanted, even if it killed their victims. Those were the vampires that made it hard for the good folk to head out and live normal lives.

"Save for those abstinent whiny vegetarians," Shadow huffed.
Those types of vampires were common in the northern part of the United States. One had come to Bellerouge, and was only discovered after trail upon trail of crocodiles were drained of their blood. The news covered the story up by saying it was a python with an eating disorder, but the good news was the others Unit did get off the hook for the time.

"Clearly we're not."
She gestured to the pizza that had a bit of everything on it. She was trying to get him to lighten up a bit. No one liked talking about the elephant in the room that was vampires. She didn't want Shadow to stress. Judging by the look on his face, he had done plenty of that before they ran into each other. It only made sense. He blamed himself for the actions of his father. Which was ridiculous because he had nothing to do with it. But that was Shadow. He took a lot of weight on his shoulders and took each offense to his friends personally.

The laugh that came out of Shadow's didn't even sound like a laugh. What was that weird noise he just let fly from his throat? Was it a snort? A bizarre combination of a bark and a snort? It didn't matter in the long run, because he knew he was making it as an attempt to laugh. Jane had been the one to get it out of him, which was a record not many could say they could get out. The last person to make him do anything strange out of joy was Sunshine.
"Their loss."

Jane had to struggle to keep a straight face when she heard the strangled laugh that escaped Shadow. It was nice to hear him relaxed enough to laugh. Or rather, it was nice to hear him laugh at all. For the longest time, she hadn't thought him capable. Then again, when she first met him she had yelled at him for not doing his job and the time after that, she had been a hostage of a psychotic demon. So who was she to say what was normal?
"Yeah, their loss," she said, a little dazed, because of how happy he had been and how deliriously happy that made her.

Shadow raised a brow bone at her. He had been used to her using her "teacher voice" to get across what she wanted to say. This tone of voice was almost wistful. She was trying hard not to laugh at his awkward laugh, which made him want to sink into the cushions and get eaten. But this wasn't about him
"You doing okay? You sound out of it..."

"Huh? Uh, yeah, just... been a long week, that's all," she tried to reassure him.
She desperately hoped he'd believe her. She didn't want to say that talking to him made her feel like she was going to burst. That wasn't a normal reaction to seeing someone. She knew what she was feeling, she just didn't want to admit it just yet. There was no way that Shadow thought that something like that was even remotely possible. Besides, she was known as a cop hater...

"Mhm. And while I was gone, you got yourself into some stress," he murmured.
He didn't want to probe past her comfort level. Yet whenever they started to speak since the Lilith incident, he had noticed a change in the half troll. She was still known for her hatred of cops, yet that bitterness was starting to go away. Was it because most f the cops she knew were close friends of hers? If there were any feelings, why him? He was probably the biggest person she should hate as he represented everything that she was against, yet here they were sharing a pizza.

"Oh not nearly as much as Agreste. He had turned his father's study into a classroom for us and the kids... It was... almost normal." she said. "Despite everything."
Please, anything but feelings. She had to steer the topic away because with Shadow... She might just blurt out everything if only he asked. And that was a dangerous thought. To be so open and free of speech with him. He'd hate her for sure if she said something. Or it would ruin a perfectly good friendship. There was no point in that. She actually like spending time with Shadow. He wasn't half bad for a cop.

"He's a good kid. I trust him a lot to do good for the city. And keeping your pretty face out of harm's way."
Well, shit. He admitted what he thought about her. This time there was no booze for him to blame it on. Or stress. Well, he let the cat out of the bag to it before. He swallowed the bite of pizza, its heaviness weighing a lot more as he swallowed. He could handle a tiny bit of rejection. The only crimes he committed, besides accidental manslaughter, were his honest opinions and honest statements.
"Jane..." he said slowly, "when I was stuck in purgatory, you were one of the driving forces in getting back home. There was this...area where I could see what was going on, and, well, I sort of watched you. It was...amazing watching your eyes light up as you taught those kids, even with the tough situations."

Her mouth opened but her breath hitched, chewing through any words that might have escaped her. She counted herself lucky she had just set her glass down and swallowed before he said that. She would want to crawl into a hole and die if she did spit take on Shadow. She hastily looked away so she didn't have to meet his gaze. Her 'pretty' face might not be so pretty when she was blushing nearly as much as the faery did when her dad flirted. And that thought made her stomach squirm. Flirting... Shadow was flirting. It took a moment for her brain to kick back into gear and work out a response.
"I'm a teacher... It's what I do." she mumbled.
