Ever since the attack, Sunshine had been weary of what Jasmine has said. Weight gain? It hadn’t been possible. But then she had only one conclusion. There had been no protection one night during the apocalypse. It only meant...and a trip to the drug store confirmed it.
She was no longer wearing a bulletproof corset. Instead, her “beer belly”, as Thomas joked, was hanging loose. It meant no happy hour, at least not at the bourbon. And now that the baby was growing, she took her cop duties off the streets and in the Nevermore kiosk, punching in orders quickly.

If Yang was honest, she'd admit that, for a while now, things had kind of been on the low-down for her. Her relationship with Adrien was doing fine, despite the little setback of his powers finally being revealed to her. So far, she hadn't noticed anything with Pitch since he came back to work, although Adeline still seemed a bit worried about him. And her social life was still going good. She'd visited Weiss not too long after she'd been announced as a candidate for the Voodoo Queen, and Yang had assured her that she'd kick everyone's butts. Next to Riku, Weiss was the best witch doctor Yang knew. She was confident that her friend would do just fine. As she headed into work, she figured getting a hot cop of coffee could only improve her already good mood. As she headed to the kiosk, she wasn't surprised to see Sunshine already there. Despite her belly being a bit larger than it used to be, she could still whip up coffee and pastries just fine. Yang just hoped her friend didn't get bored. Getting involved in car chases or going after deadly criminals was a no-go when you were pregnant. "Hey," she greeted, giving a wave and a smile. "How's it hanging?"

One coffee was finished and another was on the way. Sunshine was manning the second stream of hazelnut brew when she heard an All too familiar voice. Yang was strutting down as cool and collected as she could. Once she actually gave birth, she’s be strutting with her in their cool police uniforms soon. Shadow was up top, wrapping up reports of sexual harassment he had been called to investigate. Small reports would be all Sunshine could do, which bummed her out slightly. At least people like Yang were around to keep her pregnant gloom away. “What’s new, fellow Blondie?”

Sunshine seemed to perk up once Yang walked into the room. Maybe her pregnancy wasn't bogging her down too much. First pregnancies always brought about tons of worry and anxiety, from what Yang saw at least. "Figured I'd treat myself today," she replied. "I could use a latte right now." Usually, Yang went with just straight-up coffee, but something a little sweeter sounded good right now. And there would still be enough a kick to get her a little energized. She glanced at Sunshine's protruding belly before asking "How's the baby bump doing?"

Lattes were a drink she could do in her sleep. The weird part was, the coffee, depending on the type of latte she was cooking, was what made her slightly nauseous. Food cravings were slowly creeping up, too. Apparently she was constantly needing to fill up on hot dogs dipped in milkshakes. She had addressed it to her family, which was odd. Yang asked about the baby bump as she started steaming the milk, and on instinct, her hand fell over the bump. "I need to go to the ultrasound, and see what the final call is. Riku and I have picked out names, both for sentimental reasons. For a boy, we were thinking Terrance, and for a girl Maria."

So, it was still up in the air whether the baby would be a boy or a girl. Yang felt like either would be cute, and she smiled at the names Sunshine mentioned. "I wonder if it'll give any hints as to what kind of powers the baby might have," she mused. Would it have sunny/healing powers like Sunshine? Or witch doctor stuff like Riku? Or maybe even a bit of both? Kids who had parents that had different powers or were different species could be a bit of a wild card.

Sunshine's eyes lost a bit of their gleam. "Don't think ultrasounds have gotten that much tech yet," she said with a weak laugh. The power of the Seddon family was hereditary, so it was possible the baby could have it. If not for Gothel's kidnapping. She said she had done something with the sun lily's power. Sunshine hadn't told anyone about her ambush by vampires yet. The last thing the needed was worrying about her more than they already were.

Yang glanced up at Sunshine's weak-hearted laugh. She looked a little troubled for some reason. "You doing okay?" Yang asked, concerned. Sunshine seemed worried about something. Or maybe it was just the usual "expectant first-time mother" worries. Yang always had a feeling that Sunshine would make a great parent, but maybe her friend had a hard time believing that herself. Heck, Yang thought the same thing about Adrien, and he was a little skeptical of the idea as well.

The last pump of sugar was added to the latte and she capped it and slid on the warmth sleeve before handing over to Yang. Her hand fell to the back of her neck on instinct, where the tiny snip of hair, a snip Wendy had addressed now when Sunshine told her the attack, and she exhaled. "It's..." Well, she couldn't lie to one of her best friends. "A few days ago, I got snatched up by the vampires that attacked me. They didn't do anything...or at least, I don't think they did..."

Sunshine was quiet for a moment as she handed Yang her latte. For a moment, she almost thought she wouldn't answer. But as she started sipping her drink, Sunshine dropped the ball and said that the same vampires that had attacked her way back had actually kidnapped her recently. Yang spat out her drink in surprise and exclaimed "What!?" Why the heck hadn't Sunshine mentioned this earlier? Sure, she said they didn't do anything to her, but still. And even then, she seemed a little doubtful of it. "Why didn't you say anything?" she asked. "We should get an investigation going, try to track them down, or something!" The idea of anyone hurting Sunshine was enough to make her blood boil. And she felt bad for not even noticing that something had happened to her friend.

"I didn't need you guys worrying about me more than you already were!" Sunshine's voice cracked slightly as she admitted why she withheld such important information. In retrospect, it was stupid of her for not bringing any of this up. Shadow and Yang were her best friends, and instead, she chose the happy side of what was going on, her pregnancy, and announced that to them. The guilt was stabbing her deeper than, well, the stake that should have been going into Jasmine's chest. She picked up a napkin to help clean up the spittle. "I can...at least start writing a report, to save you guys time. That way I'm still involved but not technically on the field."

Yang heard the crack in Sunshine's voice as she responded that she didn't want everyone worrying about her anymore than they already were. That made Yang stop for a second. She knew more than anyone about pretending things were okay so the people you loved didn't worry about you. And the guilt you felt when they did. She let out a breath. "I'm sorry," she said. "I just...I wish I could have protected you." More than anything, Yang hated feeling like she wasn't there for her loved ones when they needed her. It had been a problem for her ever since her parents had been killed, and while she'd made some significant strides in not feeling guilty every time her friends got hurt when she wasn't around, old habits died hard. And Yang hated to think about what would have happened if these vampires actually decided to hurt Sunshine.

"Kentucky fried vampires. Don't think I'll be serving those at the Nevermore any time soon," Sunshine was able to crack a not as forced smile along with her quip. Pretending that things were okay when the truth was that they weren't had been a lesson she had started to put up as a survival means. Both at the hands of killers like Gothel and Jasmine, but also real life. It was easier to go through life with a smile and a little laugh, putting the ache below. Yet, as Sunshine was looking at her friend's earnest face, she knew acting that way was not going to fly around Yang. Yes, she was smiling, but it was still scary.

Normally, the phrase "Kentucky Fried Vampires" might have made Yang laugh. But she could see that Sunshine was trying to lighten the mood, and Yang didn't want her to feel like she had to hide whatever she was feeling. "If they come near you again, they'll be burnt Kentucky Fried Vampires," she muttered. "But why did they even take you in the first place? What did they want?" It seemed strange that they would go through the trouble of nabbing Sunshine, and then just letting her go. What was their motive?

Sunshine's hand instinctively went to the back of her head. Very slowly, she parted some of the hair. At the nape of her neck, one strand of hair was not like the rest of her golden tresses. This lock was curled slightly and a mousy color. "Gothel is obsessed with the power of the sun in my hair. When she first kidnapped me, it was hinted they wanted to take the power for themselves. Mom said that when I was a baby she stole some of it. She was able to stop her...but well, eighteen years later, she's gotten a coven together and got the jump on me." She shivered, still remembering Thorn Manor. How they teased and tortured her. They only gave her food and water just to sustain the sun's power, like sticking a cut flower in a vase.
