It wasn't uncommon for April rains. But it was uncommon for them to get colder near the Crispin Manor. Elsa was in her parlor, sipping tea brought by her kind-hearted maid. The Others Unit were reacting violently to the leaving of the La Llorona Killer case, and she had the suspicion it didn't quite seem right. A file was open in front of her as she scrutinized the file, wondering what exactly led the police to call her clients off the trail. She was studying the pictures of the cases, looking for something, when she heard a knock on her front door.
"See who it is, Ella," Elsa called to the pretty blonde girl that was checking on the blue curtains.

Riku looked around as he walked into the nicest part of town in the rain. He remembered playing in this area, growing up here. It filled him with both sadness and resolution. He had left this cushy lifestyle for a reason and maybe sometimes he missed it but overall he was happy with the choice he had made. However, he had a mission today. To formally introduce himself to the woman that represented the cops in court; Elsa. He felt it only right. So, taking a deep breath he knocked on the door and waited for someone to open it. When the maid did he gave her his most charming smile. “Officer Riku LaFayette to see Elsa” he said.

The arrival was someone the lawyer had never met before. He was young, maybe around her age. He had striking green eyes under his silver hair. No doubt there was a train of admirers for him. "You must be new to the office, then," she responded, "make yourself comfortable. Coming in from a rainstorm is never pleasant."

He nodded and came into the home of Elsa. He realized he was dripping wet and so continued standing just in the entrance of the home. He didn't want to drip all over the carpets or something. He didn't have the kind of money to easily replace something like that anymore if carpets got ruined by his dripping water all over it. "I don't mind the rain so much, just being cold after I get out of the rain" He chuckled and shrugged. "Anyway, I'm here to introduce myself. Everyone said you were the one that represented the BPD in court and I wanted to meet you, in case you someday represent me in court"

"I can try and get some heat in here," Elsa offered. It wouldn't be much, but a controlled environment would prevent her house from melting off the frost that made the Crispin Mansion unique to begin with. She rushed to grab a lighter while turning on the gas for the fireplace, backing up as the tongues of flame started licking the makeshift logs placed within. "There we go. That should keep things warm. So," she set the lighter down, looking back at her visitor, "I have to admit, it's not often new arrivals just arrive on my doorstep. But, it saves me the trouble of playing email tag with the commissioner."

"Oh, no that's not-" But she had lit the fire and he sighed, smiling slightly. She was a very kind person. He could tell already. "Thank you" He said and waited for the heat to reach him. It helped. "Well, I used to live in this area, so I figured it would be easier to just walk to your home" He explained after a moment's hesitation. "It's sort of like going back home. So it was easier for me to come here instead of having the commissioner e-mail you"

"By chance were you close to...to any Ombres?" Elsa asked. The dark parts of town were super prominent here. The anger of the past and the elegance of the present made it popular among demons and dark mages. "Oh, forgive me that was rude," she cleared her throat. "Anyways, yes, I'm the prime defense for the Others Unit." She snapped her fingers, showing a crystallization in the air. The six spikes branches into one another, coming to form a perfect, palm sized snowflake. "Takes one to help one."

He thought for a long moment before shaking his head. "My parents might have but I don't remember any Ombres. Why?" Now she had peaked his interest. He shrugged. "I didn't think it rude at all" He assured her. He watched her little display of power with interest. It was impressive and more than a little cool. "I deal in voodoo magic" Riku told her. "It's nice meeting someone else with unusual powers" He hoped she didn't find that rude at all.

"I was just...curious as to what got you into the force is all," Elsa answered, settling back into the chair where her teacup sat still steaming. "Most people come in due to losing loved ones from being too close to an Ombre." The mentuon of voodoo magic was what made her stop talking. Voodoo was on the same coin as hoodoo, the latter was not as common. If used in the wrong hands, it could be an incredibly dangerous magic. Elsa knew the judgment all too well. Her own ice powers could be dangerous if she willed them to be. "And thank you," she looked upward, smiling at the glittering frost she had designed to give the mansion some sparkle, "I always wanted to use my magic for good as opposed for evil. Breaks the mold."

He smiled faintly. "I was enamored by the police as a child. They worked so hard through so much to make this town even moderately safe. And they did it with little thanks. It really impressed me and when I was young I wanted to do the same job and make the city even slightly better, even if I didn't get a thank you. That's why I'm a cop" He smiled at the glittering frost all around and nodded. "It looks lovely" he complimented. "Voodoo is usually used for good. It's shadow voodoo that gets all the attention and gives normal voodoo priests and priestesses the bad rap" He felt like explaining, slightly bitterly. "I know all to well what 'breaking the mold' with example feels like"

Elsa picked up her tea, sipping it while listening to the motive of Riku joining the force. With the mint tickling her throat, the only indication she gave to show she was listening were nods of her head. She set her cup down to finally speak. "Ah, yes. Shadow voodoo. They're some of the causes for creating Ombres. But the irony is, the voodoo you practice is what seals them. I suppose having you on the force is an asset."

He nodded towards her. "My family is...a powerful voodoo family" He said with some hesitation. "We deal in light voodoo only as far as I'm aware, But we-they-rule the voodoo scene" He nodded to her last statement, smiling faintly. He was very proud he was a voodoo priest on the force. He could be doubly useful in doing his job. "What got you interested in becoming a lawyer, if I might return the question?"

What a question. It was rare she got asked it, but she wouldn't turn down anything from the BPD. Call it a habit. She looked up at an old painting of a couple. The woman had the same blue eyes as the platinum blonde lawyer, while her father had a prominent nose. "I came from a line of slavery, believe it or not. Those are my great great great grandparents. They came to America from Norway as part of the slave trade. They escaped, coming to Bellerouge..." She sighed sadly, the cup of her tea frosting, "...history neglects the abuse of white slaves. They were free, but succumbed to their wounds. I became a lawyer to make sure nothing like what happened to them ever happens again. Slavery may be over, but in Bellerouge, we have a new prejudice; a prejudice against Others"

Ah. Voodoo had come from African slaves. Riku's ancestry was white and entitled for the most part. He was a quarter African American from his great-great-great grandfather sleeping with a maid, a voodoo queen, and having the audacity to name the resulting child his heir. Riku and his sister were both pale, but his father was not. "My great-great-great grandmother was a slave" He stated, looking up at the picture of the couple. They were striking. "It's why voodoo runs in the family" He nodded at the statement that there was prejudice against others. It was true, there was a lot of prejudice. Tourists crossed the street when an obvious Other came by, and some fellow humans reacted hostilely when they learned Riku could do voodoo magic.

"Yes, the practices of religion coming overseas to meet and making the magic we know today." Elsa glanced over at the library in her study. One shelf was entirely dedicated to the art of voodooism. The books ranged from modern and paperback to old and bound in cloth, still smelling of old glue and worn pages. "It's funny how cultures merging can create something entirely new, isn't it?"
