"Yay, girls day out!" Jenny cheered as she raced ahead of Yang and Penny, eager to explore what the park had to offer.
"Don't wander off too far," Yang called after her. Even though it was broad daylight, the La Llorona killer was always lurking in the back of her mind. Despite her earlier efforts to catch the guy, or girl, it looked like she was getting no where. She should have expected as much. She was a seventeen year old girl. What chance did she really have of catching a murderer all by herself? But, she tried not to think about that, or her recent run-in with Pitch, for that matter. She was here to enjoy an outing with Penny and Jenny. She would have taken the boys with her as well, but Cody and Louie had been itching to spend some money at the arcade for a while, and Yang figured she should let them since she had the extra cash.
"You go on with Jenny," Yang said as she settled onto a park bench. "I'm just gonna chill here."
Penny nodded before running off to join Jenny. She had always been the quietest out of the four kids, and Yang worried about her sometimes. But, she was always more open when she was with her, or any of the other kids for that matter. They looked out for her, just like Yang looked out for all of them. She was glad to see them already trying to be kind people. She let out a long breath, lacing her hands behind her head as she looked up at the sky. It was a bright blue color today, with hardly any clouds. She felt like, despite her worries, it would actually be a good day today.

Jane took to exploring the city after she and Omar parted ways. Dressed in one of her mother's old sundresses and her heels from the night before, Jane felt like an entirely new woman outside of her club clothes. Technically, as a troll, being out during the day was burning the midnight oil. She hadn't slept since the day before. She stopped at a Nevermore Kiosk to get her cup of get-up-and-go expresso.
She wasn't too far from the park. Her father used to take her all the time when she was little. She wandered into the playground area, wondering how much had changed in ten years. Much to her surprise, she spotted a familiar figure on one of the park benches. The young woman smiled and walked over.
"Hey Yang," Jane greeted.

Yang heard a familiar voice greet her and she looked up to see that it belonged to Jane. She gave a smile. "Heya Jane," she replied. "How's it going?" She noticed Penny and Jenny stop in the middle of their playing, obviously curious as to who was talking to their caregiver. But Yang just gave them a smile and a wave and they went right back to playing. If Yang was fine, then they had nothing to worry about.

Jane smiled when the kids looked to Yang. They must be some of the kids she mentioned taking care of. She never would have thought Yang the type to take in other needy children, but it seemed the blonde had a big heart. It was always nice to see the people who took you by surprise. She wondered if her dad met the kids yet, or if he just assisted Yang on the side. The blonde was quite proud and probably had a heart time asking for help.
"I'm doing great. What about you?" Jane said.

Yang smiled, glad to hear that Jane was doing well. She probably was, after reuniting with the father she had lost so long ago. No doubt they wanted to do everything they could to make up for lost time. Yang was happy for them. "Eh, the usual," she replied. "Never a dull moment in the life of Yang."

Jane could easily said my she was happy to hear it. If there was anyone that Jane wanted to see do well, it was Yang. The girl had done so much for her and asked so little in return. She barely knew Jane and she went out of her way to help her.
"You don't say?" Jane asked. "Are those two girls yours?"
She gestured to the two younger girls playing in the park. They looked to be having fun.

Yang nodded. "Yup. Technically, we're not related, but I guess I got into the habit of calling them my kids. They don't seem to mind." She gave a smile. "I've got two other ones down at the arcade right now. Typical boy stuff, you know?"

Jane smiled. The kids seemed happy. It said a lot about Yang as a person to have taken in the orphans. Some of them may have made it well through foster care like Jane, but others, could have ended up in bad homes, fighting just to make it through the day all because of a broken system that only worked half of the time.
"They look like they're having fun." Jane said. "Are you taking a break?"
It must have been hard to keep up with four children. It probably ate up a lot of time that Yang had to make sure the kids were getting everything they needed, food, education, a warm building, clothes. Jane's heart went out to the blonde. She had no idea how the woman was balancing it all but she was doing it nevertheless. Without being asked.

Yang shrugged. "I guess. I had some extra money, so I figured I'd let them treat themselves to what they wanted. Louie and Cody chose arcade games, Penny and Jenny chose ice cream and a trip to the park." She glanced back at Jane, wondering what she thought about all this, and how she felt. It was probably a little disheartening for her and Omar, to know that he had missed raising her and watching her grow. But, at least now they had all the time in the world to make up for it. "So, how are you and Omar doing?" she asked. "Got any plans or are you just hanging out and catching up on things?"

"Good choices." Jane said.
She smiled as she watched the two little girls chasing one another about. At one point, that would have been her and Mikey playing in the park. Watching the two girls made her miss her brother deeply. At least he hadn't suffered. She wondered what kind of person he would have been if he had gotten a chance to grow up. He was such an adventurous spirit. Much like their father, though more aligned morally than their father and didn't start fights just because.
"We stayed up late last night." she said. "Talking. I haven't technically gone to bed yet. But I went home so he could sleep before his next set."

"Hey, I don't want you getting bags under your eyes," Yang said teasingly. Although she was glad to hear that Omar and Jane were enjoying their time together. "Is he still bitter about what the police did?" she asked. Omar had seemed pretty pissed that the cops had taken Jane away without a second thought and put her in a foster home, leaving him to think that she had been dead all these years. Yang could understand his anger, though. She felt the exact same way about cops.

"I'll get my beauty sleep later." Jane said dismissively, but her smile faded a little. "I'm still mad. Why wouldn't he be? They didn't listen no matter how much I kicked and screamed."
The officer had done what he did, to protect her, he had said when she was nine. She had no family, he argued, and the city was in chaos so she was better off growing up away from that. It was a big fat lie. She missed her father so much. When she tried to run away, she was moved further and further away from the city from preventing it from happening again. For a while, everyone understood why the little girl was angry, but after a while, they wanted the little angry girl to do something she couldn't do - forget about her past. They stopped understanding.

Jane's answer was as Yang expected. Heck, even Jane seemed pretty mad about the whole thing, too. And she had good reason. "Yeah, seems like only a handful of the cops around here are actually good," she said. "Everyone else can go suck it."

"I don't want to talk about the cops right now," Jane said.
Otherwise she would get steaming mad, perhaps go on a rant about how inefficient the officers of the city were and then she would get worked up to do something rash. Not a lot of people understood her deep seeded hatred for police officers. Her father knew. Yang knew. But that was about it. Her foster parents certainly hadn't understood. They had tried to tell her that if she were ever in trouble she should go to a police officer for assistance. Instead, Jane went to the sketchy individuals of the streets for her help.
"Tell me about your kids," Jane requested.

Jane wanted to change the subject, and Yang was willing to go along with it. What was the point of talking about something that was going to upset them both? Instead, Jane asked about her kids. "Well, they all have sad stories, in a way," she said. "Otherwise, they wouldn't have ended up with me. But, I guess you can sort of relate to that." She shifted slightly in her seat. "Louie was the first kid I got, about two years ago. He's an empath. He ended up running away from the orphanage he was in, said nobody would want a kid like him. I actually found him half water-logged near the river. He can be a real piece of work, but he's a tough kid. Doesn't get fazed easily. I guess you could say he's my second-in-command. When I'm away, he's in charge." She ran a hand through her hair before continuing.
"Jenny came along about a year later. She can talk to animals. Her dad treated her pretty badly, so she came to me. She's one of the nicest kids I've ever met. I swear, she can win the heart of any person or animal she talks to." She gave a laugh. "As for Penny and Cody, Omar actually found them not too long ago and handed them over to me. It's kind of a thing we do. They're the only regular humans I have. They're kind of the same boat as Jenny with the 'rotten parents' thing. I think they were the alcoholic sort or something. Cody's the adventurous type, always looking for something interesting. He wants me to teach him how to fight so bad. Penny's kind of quiet, but she's sweet once you get to know her." She gave a smile. "And that's pretty much it. Now you know the members of my 'kid gang.'" She made air quotes with her fingers.
