"Can't...breathe..." Sunshine winced as the corsetiere finally put the last lace in. She was standing stock still in a white gown that, quite literally, formed her figure. The sleeves were elegant and bell shaped, draping to a point ad the edge of the skirt. She frowned at her reflection. The white was pretty, but too...bridal. Plus, with the catering, it was was bound to get covered in chocolate stains.
"Try the purple one again," Shadow pointed out. He already had his idea planned, and with some artistic help, the "armor" he would be doning at the LaFayette masquerade would be functional. He was admiring one of the swords at the medieval stall. The length was good, but the weight was too light, almost like it was made from Styrofoam or cardboard. Maybe it was. He pulled out another blade and tested the weight. The longsword was a good length this time, and even had the same dark gray tone the armor that was being made held, but something about it didn't seem quite right.
Sunshine took one quick gasp before folding her arms. "Fine. But only so I can get air back into my lungs."
Her partner let out a snicker as she toddled to behind the chaning room with the corsetiere clucking after her. So, while she was doing her girlie thing, he could admire the other weapons. One sword in particular got his attention. The metal was so dark it almost looked black. The hilt looked easy to carry. But the problem was...it was almost too thin and elegant. He tapped the glass, asking the smith, "Is there something similar to this but larger?" The smith held up a finger and ran to the back, and that meant the black hedgehog was just people watching, tapping his foot as watching people run through Magnolia Street.

Thanks to Jane, Yang now had a dress and shoes picked out for the ball. Now, she just needed a mask. She insisted on at least paying for one part of her outfit, since Jane had paid for the rest of it. Yang still felt a little guilty, asking her to do that. She knew her friend had basically offered to help her whenever she needed it, but that didn't mean it still nagged at her. Yang was a very prideful person. She felt like she was a burden when she asked people for help. But, she tried to get all melancholy about it. She had been brooding too much lately, and needed to stop worrying about little things like that. Besides, she was still excited about this ball. She couldn't remember the last time she had been to something like this. Her eyes roamed over the shops and stands on Magnolia Road, trying to see if any of them had masquerade masks for sale. However, a familiar face caught her eye, and she found herself coming to a halt.
Shadow. She hadn't talked to the guy since they had rescued that kid from the La Llorona. As far as she knew, he hadn't mentioned her name to anyone on the force, which was fine by her. She had a bad reputation with more than a few cops. She barely knew anything about him, but he seemed the dependable type, and hadn't asked her too many questions either. All in all, he was on her personal list of "cops that don't suck." She wondered if he was going to the ball too. Might as well ask, she thought as she headed over. "Hey Shadow," she said, giving a wave. "How's it going?"

Well, apparently you did run into friends in Magnolia Road. Or rather, in this case acquaintances. He returned the wave at the blonde young woman walking over. Good to see that she got through the La Llorona scare okay. Which meant her kids were okay.
"Hey, Yang," he greeted. The smallest trace of a smile was emerging, which for people other than Sunshine, was good. "Checking out the Magnolia wares, too?"

Yang nodded. "Yeah. Got caught up in all the fuss over that ball coming up, I guess," she said with a little laugh. Heck, it was hard not to be interested in it. The LaFayettes had never opened their doors to everybody before. This was probably the first time non-millionaires were allowed in there in, like, forever. Normally, Yang would hate going to a place with snobby rich people, but since nearly everybody else in town was going, she figured she might as well. Jenny and Penny were already talking about how they were hoping Yang would meet her Prince Charming like Cinderella did at the ball, which drove Louie and Cody crazy. Personally, Yang felt like the boys were hoping she would bring back some of the tasty food that was sure to be there. "Are you going too?" she asked.

"Would I be here if I wasn't?" Shadow teased. The vendor returned with a thick piece of velvet, so bulky it could have been a wad of fabric. He peeled it back and smile, genuinely this time. The dark gray metal curved in an elongated shape, the blade glinting a silver. A bronze Celtic knot was embedded in the center of the pointed part of the sword. Bronze stacked along the blunt edges in pointed layers. He pulled out his card and handed to the vendor. "Perfect. I'll take it" Despite its size, Shadow was able to pick it up. "A little accessory," he explained to Yang. "Nothing a little practice at the spectre to get me into character"
"Good, can I get out of this?" Sunshine called from behind the changing screen. She wasn't wincing as she had in the white dress, and she was admiring the lavender dress. Yep, perfect for the ball. "Also, hi, Yang. I'll be out when I'm decent!"

Yang whistled at the sword Shadow picked out. "Very fancy," she said. Shadow must have been going all out. Not that there was anything wrong with that. A lot of people were. Although Yang was a little surprised that Shadow, of all people, was into this. He seemed like the anti-social sort, who had to be dragged to parties. Maybe he had someone to go with him. And that someone might just be Sunshine, who happened to be nearby, trying on clothes. Yang jumped a little in surprise when the blonde poked her head out. She hadn't even known she was here. "Hey there," she said, giving a wave.

Sunshine waved backbto Yang, making a face in Shadow's direction. It was the face people made to be mad in a joking way. "You win. I'm getting this one. Just some artistic touches and it'll be good." And she ducked back behind the changing screen.
Shadow shook his head. Leave it to Sunshine to make everything all happy. "Her family's catering the ball. Just hope the rich folk aren't snobby about whatever the Seddons cook."

Yang gave a little laugh. Whatever alterations Sunshine made to her dress were sure to be brightly colored and peppy. Some might think the style immature, but Yang felt like it was right for someone with Sunshine's personality. After all, there was a reason she had that nickname. She was surprised to hear that her family was catering some food. She had half-expected them to get stuff from fancy-schmancy restaurants. Maybe it was another move on their attempt to include not just rich things this year. Yang wasn't sure why the LaFayettes had a sudden change of heart about their ball, but it got people excited at least. "Well, if they are, I guess I'll just have to eat everything she brings myself," she joked. She did agree with Shadow though. If anyone turned their noses at Sunshine's food without even tasting it, she would definitely lose her temper in a heartbeat. She had been around rich people long enough that any kind of behavior like that just made her seethe with anger.

Shadow folded his arms. He didn't laugh like Yang did, but the cliche of the twinkle of the eye was evident. Sunshine had a knack for taking something that was already well made into something extradordinary. There was also something about Yang he liked. Was it her enthusiasm being similar to Sunshine? Was it that she was a girl who broke the mold? Har to say, but getting to know her in the city was putting him less in a tense state like he normally was. He looked at Yang as she vowed to eat Nevermore's delectables if no one else would. "Looks like I have some competition, and a backup to defend the Nevermore reputation."
Sunshine walked back out with the lavender dress looped over one arm. 'You two better not start a food fight. My mom and dad paid a lot of money to actually get into the ball It's not like we're going to Elsa's house where she doesn't care if you drop a sugar cube on the ground."
"Don't give us any ideas," Shadow warned. "But I have to admit," he looked thoughtful for a bit, "hit on the head by a cupcake would be an interesting way to stun a runner."

Yang laughed. "It would be Cupcake Wars, literally," she joked. It looked like she and Shadow were pretty similar in that they both got a little crazy when they were mad. No doubt Shadow's friends had to hold him back as much as Yang's friends had to with her. "Elsa? Isn't she one of the uppity lawyers?" she asked. Most lawyers were fancy-schmancy, and Elsa was no exception. Although she had heard that her cold powers weren't necessarily a reflection of her personality. Yang had never met her in person, though.

Sunshine made a "mhm" sound. The dress was sold for her, and she took the bag with glee, staring at the lavender sleeve, half in reality and half in artsy land. "She invites us over for brunch every Sunday. It's the only time we get to go to the heights without thinking about a dead body or suspects or whatever."
"Anyways..." Before Sunshine could accidentally slip confidential information, Shadow cut her off. Lord forbid they get Yang tangled I another investigation. "are you looking for any final touches, Yang?"

Yang made a "bleh" face. She had seen her fair share of dead bodies after living on the streets for so long, but they still grossed her out a little bit. Talking about them was one thing, actually seeing them was a whole other story. Shadow soon changed the subject back to the ball though, and Yang figured she should roll with it. "Just a mask," she replied. "I've got my dress and shoes picked out already and stuff. Jane helped me out."

"Oh. Well, you're on the ball faster than we are." Sunshine's voice may have been chipper, but deep down she felt a little left out. She didn't have a whole lot of friends outside the police department and the bakery, and Yang was probably one of the closest she felt to being normal. But at the same time, she chose to be a cop which are a lot of time.
She was the first to step away from the medieval kiosk out to the streets of Magnolia Road, where vendors and tourists roamed. "Uh...first, there's all this." It was like something out of a twilight zone movie. Almost every vendor had masks out. Colors and spangles swirled, shapes became identical...
"Boy, they're taking this open house seriously," Shadow remarked.
Sunshine rolled her eyes. "You're the one who suggested the Lancelot Elaine combo, Mr. Prickly."

Yang just gave a little shrug. "Eh, I wanted to get a jump-start on things. Otherwise, I'd be fighting the crowds to get something. I bet this place is gonna be like Black Friday the day before the party." No doubt there would be tons of people trying to buy things last minute, and shop-keepers would definitely take advantage of that. She glanced behind her to see quite a couple of stands with masks. Shadow was right. People were definitely taking advantage of this. She had to snicker at Sunshine's nickname for Shadow, though. "Well, at least you guys have a cool theme going on," she said. "I'm was just planning on slapping some stuff together." As long as she had a mask that matched her outfit, that was good enough for her. But Sunshine and Shadow did seem to be having fun with the Lancelot/Elaine thing.

"Oh, back off, Blondie." Seeing Sunshine's face redden at her own embarrassing nickname, Shadow smirked. "The last thing we want is my weakness for old literature to leak out." It had been his love before he became a cop, old books. He had lived in a dump before he had earned enough money to get his apartment, and somehow the library's donation had ended up next to his place. He read pretty much anything slipped there, and even had old books in his apartment.
Sunshine made an exaggerated scoff at the nickname. Yang mentioned Black Friday, and immediately she began having flashbacks of Nevermore during that time. "Never in my life has I seen people fight over beignets so ruthlessly."
"She's having flashbacks," Shadow explained to Yang. "Black Friday's miserable on all ends. One time during that year, I stopped someone from trying to rip a washing machine out of the wall."
