Riku watched his partner storm off and winced. Hopefully when this was all done he could go find her and calm her down. The problem was he didn't know whose side to be on; Shadow and Sunshine's or Aqua's. "Well if it doesn't work I'll just get some herbs I was preparing so it can heal in half the time of normal recovery" he said cheerfully. When she began to sing something felt...wrong. He'd never been a recipiant of Sunshine's healing before but he was pretty sure healing didn't feel this way. The heat in his arm was hot to almost the point of searing. He knew it was working, could feel the bone healing, but the heat...it was engulfing the rest of his body. When Sunshine neared the end of her song he couldn't take it anymore and wrested his arm from her grip with a pained yell, which continiued as the heat intensified. Riku squeezed his eyes shut and dropped to his knees as a blackish red light engulfed him. When it vanished, in Riku's place was a massive rabbit. Riku opened his eyes and yelled again, seeing his hands. "No!" he shouted, panicked.

Aqua almost made it to the chief's office when she heard a cry of pain. She turned sharply gasping in horror when she realized it was Riku who was hurting. A healing shouldn't have acted like that. She left the chief's doorway and with a flit of her wings, she was across the room, beside Riku and Sunshine. Terra's badge had been dropped in between her desk and Riku's. She hadn't even thought about anything other than Riku being hurt. She had to take a step back when the black light consumed her partner. She couldn't get close. It felt like the darkness was almost tangible, but not only that, it would hurt her too.
"What's going on?" she uttered.

"Vanitas must have planted a curse," Sunshine answered Aqua, standing up with a look of fear in her eyes. The black-red clouds were fanning through the office, making her cough. A blur rushed through to open a window, which was Shadow. He was running in a circle, wind whipping through to become a small funnel to suck the energy blow out. The blackness cleared, revealing...
a rabbit.
"...Reverse Sapien?" Sunshine guessed. The piercing blue eyes of the rabbit still showed signs of it being Riku.

Riku ripped off the cast, he must have gotten stronger with the growth spurt and the species change and flexed his arm. At least that worked. He scowled at the mention of Vanitas and a curse. "Not only does he decide to break my arm, he decides to plant a curse too?!" He was trying to keep calm but it was pretty hard. His clothes were mostly ripped because he was so much bigger and no longer human shaped. "Is reverse Sapien even possible and if it were why of all things a rabbit?" Riku asked and ran a hand over his ears, which were pinned back to his head because of his panic. "I'm going to have to resize all my gear and ask for a special uniform and possibly a new gun. One to fit my hand" he mused.

Aqua frowned. Now was not the time to sulk and hurt, despite the fact she felt her trust was betrayed. Again. She hadn't told Shadow what she did so he could take matters into his own hands. It was her sign of trust. No time for that. She had to focus on Riku. Her partner was the one who was truly in any trouble. Even as a large rabbit he towered over her. What did Vanitas do to him? Why a rabbit of all things? Would this be Riku if he had truly been born an Other? Not just a gifted human? Would he be able to use his magic?
"We should talk to the chief. We need to put a manhunt out for Vanitas. Maybe he'll know how to reverse this." Aqua said. "And... Riku, I'm sorry but I think resizing your gear and uniform is the least of your concerns right now."
She reached out to try to put a hand on his shoulder but stopped short. She didn't want to cross some sort of boundary or make him feel uncomfortable. She bit her lip, withdrawing her hand. This new shape was different for the human. It would probably take some getting used to. Sharper senses, different length limbs, particularly his feet, not to mention the fur. After her wings were singed, she took time off. Maybe Riku should do the same. She would vouch for her partner.

"I agree with Aqua. The sooner we get cops out for Vanitas, the more focus we can have on what just happened." A hand was already on the receptor, and Shadow was dialing. He felt terrible for having pried too deep, but fighting over it was childish; there was a common enemy and that was important. He dialed the commissioner, "Commisioner, this is Detective Shadow Griffiths. We've filed a potential suspect. One of our detectives just turned into a rabbit...Don't you laugh at me! A large rabbit from demon magic potentially caused by tainted Sapien. Add Vanitas to list of Grey Dawn accomplices. Do we have permission to file an arrest warrant?...Yes, again...Yes, we'll be prepared....immediately. That's all. Out."
As Ahadow shut the receiver down, Sunshine filled in the blanks. "We found Sapien crates on Vanitas' lair. Why he was buying them is...sort of up in the air. Point is, him holding Sapien is bad news."

Riku raised an eyebrow at his partner and wobbly got to his feet. "No. Resizing my gear and getting used to moving are my biggest concerns. I'm not letting this keep me from my job" when she hesitated putting a hand on his shoulder he picked her up in a hug. Carefully. He didn't want to crush his tea cop. "Thanks for the concern Aqua, truly. But all I need is a crash coarse in fighting as an anthromorph, a larger gun that won't burn you, and a uniform change" The hug made him feel better and he set her down after a long moment. He overheard the conversation Shadow was having on the phone and his cheeks burned, though he doubted anyone could see his embarrassment through his fur. This was funny on one aspect he supposed, but on another he was terrified. It was serious business, being cursed! He turned to Sunshine. "He may have doctored it, but he didn't blow anything into my face. Could it have been administered another way if you know, it's really the cause of..." he gestured up and down at himself "...this"

At least in this state, Riku was unrecognizable, Aqua mused. His sister would have a field day, not to mention the media would eat this up considering (despite the fact he was disowned) he was still a LaFayette. A lot of scrutiny was hitting the Others' Unit because of what happened with the Sapien. There was panic in the streets because of what the drug did to Others. How the group Gray Dawn had used magic, the one thing they abhorred, to make the drug extremely potent. Still, seeing how embarrassed Riku was getting over Shadow's call, the droopy ears might just be the death of her yet if this Terra business didn't get her first.
"You stubborn-"
And he was hugging her. Everyone was just getting touchy feely with her today. First Sunshine with her hair (though required to do a healing) and now Riku and his... fur. She gave him an awkward pat, considering her arms were pinned to her sides and a meek smile. She could not win today. First the news about Terra possibly... Shadow and Sunshine digging into her past... Now Riku getting turned into a rabbit. Though if anyone got the short stick, it was Riku. Then there was the fact that even as a rabbit, Riku towered over her. The ears gave him an unfair height advantage. Dumb, stubborn tall people and their pride.
"What if it isn't reverse Sapien?" Aqua asked. "It could just be a spell. Those usually have a limited casting time or... a limited time to find a cure. It reacted to Sunshine's magic."
Aqua was thinking spell, not Sapien. Magic often reacted to magic. But if it was a spell, she was worried about if there was a limited timeframe to find a cure for their hairy situation. In her expertise/experience, the cure was something difficult to obtain, like tears of a mermaid, feather of a phoenix, claws from a sphinx or dragon scales.

Both cops looked at one another. The one thing that really was in sync right now was that their heads were trying to comprehend what had happened. Roku had made Vanitas mad, it resulted in Riku turning into a rabbit when Sunshine tried to heal him. Aqua was probably in the worst of it, having been given bac the badge of her deceased partner after worrying about him for years and accusing them of intense digging when all they did was make sure the badge they found wasn't fake. But one, problem at the time. The focus needed to be on what made this reaction.
"A spell is a possibility, too," Sunshine noted. "But the problem is that's not the nromal anti-reaction to sun-based magic." The worst her magic did was give people an intense burn, not...turn them into a rabbit.
"Wait. Vanitas had stores of Sapien in his lair.." Shadow went back to his desk and began riffling through some Sapien case files. He flipped through the files, looking for the photographs. Once he found the picture of the sapien crates found in the lair, he brought them up for the others. "Maybe he was selling it to the Gray Dawn."
'But what;s that have to do with...Harvey here." Realizing it was a bad joke no one would get, she cleared her throat. "I mean, turning your biggest threats into rabbits? That's a little...silly."
"Sunshine, most of us were affected for three weeks...that's more than ten times the effects Sapien normally lasts," Shadow argued. "The point is Vanitas might have been the one selling the Gray Dawn the tainted Sapien. The limited time casing..." His eye fell onto the ripped cast Riku had managed to weasel out of. "We should take the cast down to the evidence lab, maybe there's something we aren't seeing."

"It could have been the shadow energy stuff that wrapped around my arm and broke it" Riku said thoughtfully. "I mean, I've heard of trick curses that wait for a specific requirement to be fulfilled. Look at the story of Sleeping Beauty. That curse exists, though not as extreme as in the fairy tale. It just waited for her to prick her finger at sixteen, but she was cursed when she was a baby. But the thing is, these curses are rather hard to do and thus rather rare. You think it was one of those, and the requirement was my arm getting healed? It's a long shot but I know ways to test for them" he sighed heavily. "I'm just going to have to go to my sister. She was better at detecting bad magic than I was. Besides, it kind of makes more sense than doctored Sapien, even if it is a long shot" Riku looked down at the cast on the ground and nodded. If it did turn out to be Sapien, he wanted to know for sure before he went to Weiss.

"One way or another, we need to figure out something to get Riku back to himself. I'm not about to stand around all day and argue about what it is or isn't." Aqua said. "So we divide the work. You two can focus on it from a tampered Sapien point. I'll look at spells. I guess... Riku, you can still try potions?"
She doubted this was anything like Sleeping Beauty. True love's kiss wasn't going to wake anyone up. Or if following the brother's Grimm logic, there was a 'poisoned needle' in his metaphorical finger. She needed some distance from this Sapien thing. Especially if they thought Vanitas was involved with it. She glanced over to see the evidence bag on the floor next to her desk. She paused, walked over, picked it up and clutched it tight. Things were so messed up.
"Your sister did want to see you." Aqua continued. "She's... cross with you."
Cross was putting it lightly. Weiss felt like Riku was replacing her entirely with Aqua and the rest of the BPD. She had gotten hurt at the ball but Riku hadn't contacted her. Their childhood home was destroyed by Thrax but Riku never rang her up to see how she was. His focus on work was admirable at times, but he had a life before he became a police officer.

Both Shadow and Sunshine nodded. Divide and conquer was a safe way to go. Besides, they were a team unit, and a team had to break up every so often. Riku and Aqua had helped them when they arrested the La Llorona Killer, so, in a strange way, looking at the tampered Sapien to get less stress off was their way or thanking them for their help. The Sleeping Beauty metaphor was a bit weak. Ifdf anything, this was more like a Snow White effect; a dormant power that could be activated with just a little nudge. But this wasn't a fairy tale...at least, not the type read to children.
Sunshine was standing as Shadow went back to his desk to start studying cargo numbers. Her hands folded on themselves, inclining her head to look at Riku and Aqua. Apparently his sister was mad at him, and well, she got why the girl felt that way. Riku hadn't been at the ball, which had made Sunshine sad, too; she had deep down wanted to at least dance with him. But now his home was ripped apart by a demon, figuratively and literally; the figurative part had been bad before, but now...
She cast her eyes down. "...If your sister knows a thing or two...then...yeah." Her eyes welled up a bit. It was her fault all of this was happening. Had she not offered to heal Riku, he'd be okay. The one time he was able to talk to someone she had a crush on and he was now a large furry animal.

Riku sighed at the thing about his sister. Of course she was probably furious with him. "I got a letter from my mother basically telling me if I went to the party I wasn't leaving" he confided. "And then the demon destroyed everything I both loved and hated about the place. I figured it would be prudent to keep my distance for awhile. And then last time Weiss and I spoke she made it very clear she didn't want to talk to me" he shrugged. Sunshine seemed close to crying so he shakily and clumsily made his way to her and patted her on her back, gently so he wouldn't bowl her over.

"I only know what she has told me."
Aqua wasn't about to devulge more of Riku and Weiss' personal matters, mostly out of respect but partially out of the face Sunshine and Shadow were already involved enough. It was personal. Plus, Riku had been through enough the the last hour alone. She was just emotionally drained from everything. Between Riku and Terra, she needed the 'personal' day for sure.
"Sunshine," Aqua said gently. "How were you supposed to know Vanitas cursed him?"

Sunshine's sobbing had made Shadow pause his search. Just hearing her cry made him think of when they had been locked up in Thorn Manor. She had cried on and off the whole time, even when trying to be sunny. It had miserable for them to be beaten up by vampires, but mostly for her because she had no means of defending herself whenever they came to pick on them. He was about to go over and pat her, but Riku had beaten him to it. He lowered his hand down, cast his gaze down and went back to his desk. He had done enough for today.
Sunshine clenched her eyes to precent any tears from falling. The ones that did were just droplets. A paw touched her back. She knew from the fur that it wasn't Shadow patting her. It was Riku. In normal circumstances, she'd be cstatic. But now, she was too ashamed t feel it. All she did in response to Aqua's gentle voice was a feeble nod.
