Another shift at the bar. Axel snorted. Maybe Moses was right. He really should get out more, if he thought that the guy asking if he 'had a special someone' ended with Axel basically admitting he was married to his job first. But the bar needed him for now. The staff wasn't good enough for him to just leave them on their own. He had to train them up just a little bit more. But he had to keep up appearances for his regulars. Not like he had a social life to begin with anyways. He lived vicariously through the people that came in, telling him of their woes or of their triumphs. Like Shadow and his unrequited love or Adeline and her fear of demons. Or Moses and his apparently really good one night stand with a very frustrating guy.

Adeline wasn't sure what to do. She knew she had to find some way to convince Pitch that they could be friends, but she wasn't sure how. Part of her still wondered if she should try. Doubts lingered in her mind about the possibility of an ancient demon wanting to hang out with a teenage girl in his free time. It almost seemed silly. But, Adeline felt like she wanted to at least try. After all, for some reason, Pitch thought that just because she could handle things on her own meant that they shouldn't see each other anymore, and she thought that was a complete load of crap. But, endeavors like these were not her specialty. Plus, there was the fact that she liked him. Like, really liked him.
It was almost absurd. But whenever she tried picturing herself with anybody that was her age, it just didn't feel right. Pitch was the one she wanted to be with, even if he was leagues apart from her. Thoughts like these swirled in her mind constantly, until she felt like her head was about to explode. She came to the solution that maybe seeing a friend would cheer her up, or at least distract her for a bit. And there was only one that came to mind. That was what led her to walking into Bourbon Graisse, and looking around until she spotted a familiar red-head. "Hey Axel," she said, hopping up onto a chair at the bar top. "How's it going?"

"Well, if it isn't my favorite little rebel without a cause." Axel chuckled. "Didn't get in trouble over your late night ride, did you?"
He had seen the lights switch on as he pulled away. The last thing he wanted was to get the kid in trouble with her parents. Accepting rides home with strangers, a demon no less, was bound to get the girl a good lecture from her parents. She had obviously come back, not with the cops or with an angry shot gun wielding father so he assumed he was in the clear. The last thing he needed was to have some crazy over protective parent getting the police involved in his business when he was trying to rebuild the reputation of the bar.

"Nope. Although now I have your oversized jacket hiding in my closet," Adeline replied, smiling a little. It was humorous now, when she looked back on it, but at the time, she had felt a little guilty about lying where exactly she had gotten the jacket from. Luckily, her dad had bought her excuse of wanting to test some shrinking spells on it, and he hadn't brought it up since.

"Not like I need it. Hasn't anyone told you I'm hot?" Axel joked.
Fire demons ran hotter than humans did. The cold literally did not bother him unless it was a blizzard. Then he started to get bothered. Get it cold enough and he would freeze up, but down south, things weren't likely to get that cold. Though he did hear rumors about someone with ice powers, someone he wasn't exactly going to cross any time soon.
"So, another toddy kid?" he asked, "Or want me to surprise you with something?"

"Oh, ha ha," Adeline said sarcastically, although she still smiled. This was what she needed: just some light-hearted banter with a friend. "A toddy sounds great, actually," she replied. Tea was a favorite of hers, and she remembered liking Axel's virgin hot toddy a lot last time she was here.

"Got you to laugh. I'll count that as a victory." he told her. "But one toddy coming right up."
Axel set to work on her drink. The water boiled, literally just by him touching the iron kettle. He mixed her drink, dropping in the tea bag and the hot water. When he removed his hand from the kettle, it left a searing red hand print. Obviously hot if he could super heat iron like that. It helped him to use his powers, even if he wasn't making a raging inferno like the fire beneath his skin told him to. He shook that aside. He set the kettle aside where no one else would touch it until it cooled off.
"So what brings you in today?" Axel asked.

Just like that, Axel's question reminded Adeline of why she was here. She frowned, wondering how she should answer. Would Axel even understand what she was going through? Had he ever been in a serious relationship before? Could she even mention Pitch's name? Axel might find it weird that she liked an older guy, a much older guy. Maybe she could just be vague about it and see how he responded. "Well..." She hesitated for a moment, wondering how she should start this. Her hands clenched and unclenched before she asked "Have you ever...liked anyone? Like, really liked them?"

"So you're crushing on someone?" Axel guessed.
She wasn't asking just because she was curious. No one ever asked the bartender with hypothetical questions in mind. It was actually kind of cute to hear that Adeline was coming to him to talk about her 'love life'. Young puppy love. He felt the urge to just ruffle her hair and tease her but was able to bite it back. That did not stop the shit eating grin that spread across his face. Three people in the matter of his time there, all in different stages of passion. Shadow with his unrequited love. Moses with the boy toy with a soft spot. Now Adeline and her mystery guy. Seemed like Cupid was playing to win.
"Who's the lucky guy?"

Adeline's face turned red. This was so embarrassing. She couldn't believe she was spouting all this to Axel. In all the movies, when a girl was crushing on a guy, she would tell her girl friends all about it at a sleepover, and they would squeal and gush and talk endlessly about it through the night. But, this was anything but a movie, and Adeline didn't have any of those things. Instead, she was crushing on a demon, she was at a bar, talking about it with a bartender, who also happened to be a demon. It was practically the exact opposite of what girls usually did. And, of course, Axel asked who her crush was. "He's...a guy. An older guy," she replied, knowing that she sounded ridiculously vague. But what else could she say?

"At least he'll have experience." Axel shrugged.
He honestly didn't see why Adeline was so embarrassed about it. Older romantic partners were great. They already knew what they liked and disliked. They knew how to kiss (some even knew how to kiss well) and there was none of that shy stuff in bed. Granted, Axel had been around the block a few times. He tended to go after experienced partners. He was guessing - solely based off the way Adeline's face lit up - that she had not dated often. Probably her first crush ever. Made this a little more amusing for him.
"Does he like you back?" he asked.

Adeline bit her lip. She wasn't sure if she could assume that. Pitch was probably the least romantic person in the whole city. She couldn't picture him doing any of the sappy things that couples did, like going out to dinner or seeing a movie or holding hands. Of course, that knowledge hadn't stopped her from imagining them doing those sappy things together at one point. She had thought that, maybe, he was changing. He didn't seem so stiff with her as he used to be. At least, that was how she felt. "I don't know," she replied. "I mean, probably not. Maybe. Ugh, I don't know." She was more likely to figure out how a rock was feeling than Pitch. "I haven't...seen him in a while."

She was floundering. Axel was taking a sort of terrible pleasure out of that. It was always hilarious to watch those with the first crush stutter, stammer and try to explain themselves. They always seemed to have a hard time lining their thoughts up. At least Adeline could form coherent sentences. Even better, she wasn't getting progressively drunk and more ardent over her confession of this mystery man of hers. So of course the fire demon was amused beyond words, tickled that she would go to the bartender when she couldn't drink and probably had friends her age to talk to about this crush of hers.
"So why him?" Axel asked, "What is it about him that makes you like him?"

"Well..." Adeline paused for a moment before answering. "He gets me. He...understands what's going on, with me and the whole...Thrax thing." That was putting it lightly, but it was the truth. Who better to understand her demon side than a demon? Pitch had gotten that and understood all the anger and sadness and fear she was feeling. "He helped me a lot, with getting through it and stuff. But...he decided that I was strong enough to cope with it on my own. So, he doesn't feel the need to hang out with me anymore." She still couldn't believe that Pitch spent time with her just to teach her how to deal with her demon side. He didn't have to show her his scar and the promise he had made, but he did. He didn't have to console her after her encounter with Vanitas, but he had. Wasn't that proof enough that he trusted and cared about her, at least a little bit?

He was a little more doubtful than Adeline. It just sounded like this guy was trying to make sure that nothing bad happened to Adeline or maybe he had a bone to pick with Thrax. Or maybe he just friend-zoned the girl. She did say he was older. How much older did she mean? Hard to tell with that blush of hers. Axel leaned back against the bartop. Still, more interesting than talking to the drunks.
"How'd you meet?" he asked.
