Riku shrugged. He honestly didn't know. "I've gotten used to the red sky. Hardly remember blue anymore. But it would be nice to see. I'm not sure when it'll turn back though, the red might be here to stay" The waitress came back and handed them each a menu before setting two wine glasses down beside them.
"I'll take your orders and then give a list of drink options to match your food" she said with a polite smile before leaving to let them decide on their food. Riku looked over his menu with a critical eye, looking for anything that jumped out at him. The crab stuffed mushrooms drizzled in sweet red port wine was fantastic if he remembered correctly. And of course lamb was good...there were so many choices. He looked over at Sunshine.
"What are you thinking on getting? I'm considering a strawberry and pecan salad and either bacon wrapped pork filets or an ahi fish steak. With a side of pan-roasted asparagus. And maybe crab-stuffed mushrooms because I am hungry and it might be expensive but it's all good"

Sunshine said nothing. Maybe the red sky had been normal for people that looked on it with indifference. Sunshine had tried to do that, but she still wanted that blue sky to return. To, well, give back the light to the city.
The menu and wine glasses snapped her out of daydreaming. The menu could have been a weapon of self defense it looked so thick and elegant. Was that faux leather with embroidered letters? She had only eaten at restaurants with plastic casings or laminated papers held together by staples or rings. She flipped open the menu was immediately overwhelmed. Not because of the prices, but because of the options. Half of these dishes she hadn't even tried yet.
"Um..." she looked for any kind of familiar name, any familair entree. The waitress looked patient enough, too, so her nerves came back to calm. "...I have to admit, it's um, pretty tricky considering this is my first time. Which would you recommend?" She asked this to the waitress.
"Well, I do know our lamb is pretty good," the waitress suggested.
Sunshine smiled. Whew, help. "Okay, then I'll go with the port wine lamb with the pine-nut lemon rice." Ordering from someplace fancy. People would kill to eat at a place like this. She handed back the menu to the waitress with a "Thank you" added to her grin.

Riku tried not to laugh at Sunshine's dilemma. He felt kind of bad but he didn't know how to help. Just as he was about to suggest something to her, she got some help from the waitress and settled on one of the better dishes. "Their lamb is one of their specialties, good choice" He handed his own menu back with a thank you as well and looked over at Sunshine. "I'm really glad you decided to come with me today" He said with a smile.

Sunshine ducked her eyes down, looking instead at the wine glass being filled with water from a maitre'd. Oh, what could she say now? The last thing she wanted to do was end up turning into a girl from a Garry Marshall film who spoke too loudly or broke a wine glass just by touching it. At least Riku was approving of her order. Or was he just being nice because it was her first time being...not just out at a fancy venue, but on a real date? She had crushes before, yes, but never had gone out with any of them. Not even prom, in which she just chose to be on the decorating committee.
"To be honest, I'm....sort of nervous," she admitted. "I've never actually been out somewhere like this. I mean, Shadow and I go on coffee dates or donut runs, but...this...I'll have to tell my family about this place. They'd like the charm."

He watched her act shyly and smiled at her. "Would it be weird to say I actually find that a bit charming? I've been expected to go on dates with prospective young women and act charming my whole life as a LaFayette. I'm used to places like this. But you-well ,it's so new to you and probably exciting. I love watching you experience this for the first time. And for the first time, I'm not pretending about anything. I genuinely am having a good time" He grinned. "I think taking your family here would be a great idea. I'm sure they'd love it here"

"If this is you naturally, I'd hate to see the facade," Sunshine huffed. Talking with an uppercrust member of society, only to find he didn't like that lifestyle, surprised her. But maybe that was what she was liking about Riku; he surprised her with every action, every word. She drank idly, reflecting on what her mom would say, "Mom would make jabs about British food, Thomas wouldn't be talking and John...I mean Dad...he'd probably demand recipes."

"The facade is more...detached. Charming but not engaged. I knew how to make girls like me but I wasn't interested in any of them. It infuriated my parents. I got branded 'The Playboy' by the media because of it" he gave a short laugh. "I'm more open around people I enjoy talking to. You, Aqua, my sister once..." he shook himself out of his little funk and smiled again. "Why wouldn't Thomas be talking? Shy? busy eating food or just not talkative? And I could probably see if we could get recipes of anything you like. I might be a rabbit but I'm still charming" he wiggled his nose at her, hoping it would make her laugh.

"Better than the Bachelor. How many roses do you think you snubbed?" Sunshine was trying to make light of the Playboy nickname. In truth, knowing how he looked before the curse made her realize he did have that 'rebel bad boy' vibe a lot of girls crushed on. She was one of those flocks probably. She giggled as his nose twitch, realizing that it was ironic the most sought after guy was now a giant rabbit and she was out with him. This was like something out of a little kid's storybook. Hevk, she kind of felt like a little kid. "Speaking of your sister, I...ran into her at the park. I avoided talking about you like the plague. I feel bad for her; beneath those layers, she seems...friendly."

He laughed. "More than I bothered counting. I broke a lot of hearts. People wanted part of the LaFayette empire. People set their hearts on me and I couldn't reciprocate anything. It was kind of bad" he smiled when she giggled. Mission accomplished. His happy look fell slightly when she mentioned meeting Weiss. "She wasn't mean to you was she? I'd feel terrible if she was snubbing you or something" He paused when Sunshine said Weiss was almost friendly and his mouth twitched upward slightly. "She used to be a lot happier. Before I left. We were each other's best friend. We could talk to each other about pretty much anything. I'm...really glad she wasn't totally mean to you"

"There's a fine line between mean not the talkative type; I should know, I have Mr. Prickly as a partner," Sunshine pointed out. Shadow's aloofness hadn't been in the same vein as Weiss, but time with him had taught her cues of ha fling situations. Plus, over time Shadow had let his walls down. Sunshine figured with Weiss' upbringing, the same would happen. She started drawing on the perspiration of her glass. She had nothing interesting in her family. Well, except for the very thing she had poured out to Weiss but to Riku? He'd probably find her bubbiness a mask for what happened

He smiled. "Shadow is a little different from my sister I think. Weiss acts out because we were all but powerless in our lives. Our parents controlled every aspect of who we were. Or tried to, anyway. I wish I could take Weiss away from my family. It's not good for her" His hand clenched on the table and he grit his teeth, remembering snippets of his childhood. The pain, the pressure, the terror to disappoint and the crippling need to please everyone. To not screw anything up. Finally he'd snapped under pressure and decided to do his own thing and damn the consequences. "But I'm glad to hear she's doing okay"

Sunshine nodded. Well, it explained a lot of the Lafayette heritage. Not counting Riku, who wanted out because of the history of scrambling to the top, the Lafayettes were...almost arrogant. Or that was the vibe she got from the ball. "At least you still had your parents," she hedged around the topic carefully. Well, that cat was out of the bag.

"You lost your parents?" Riku guessed. Now he felt bad. Complaining about his dysfunctional family life when Sunshine had lost one or both of her parents. That sucked. "My parents were...less than desirable" he said a little uncomfortably. "Except mom but mom became detached after a bit. Life was...lonely. Friends secretly hated me because they wanted to be me, my parents were strict and detached, and I was a desirable catch because of money and prestige. My only friend was Weiss"

"Oh, no no, I didn't lose them both." Sunshine shook her hands quickly. Well, that escalated quickly. She took a shuddering breath and pulled out her flowery clutch. Inside the credit card slip was a picture beginning to show a folded corner. Shadow carried one of Maria, and Sunshine had her own variation. She pulled out the picture carefully, pressing down to smooth out the creases. The picture she unfolded was of a muscular man with dark brown hair styled into a combdown, a mustache on his upper lip, and piercing green eyes. Scribbled underneath was, with hearts over the 'i's,
"To: Rachel, my Sunshine With Love: Joaquin"
She was trying so hard not to puke at it. A bit bitter, but it was how she felt looking at it when she was older. It looked less like a momento and more like something a sixteen year old would hang on their wall.
"That's my father. He left when I was still a kid. No death, no divorce, just...up and left. This is...all I have left of him."

"Oh, oh good. Sorry" She probably thought he was horrible for jumping to that conclusion. He leaned forward to look at the picture. The man in the picture was handsome, that was quite apparent. Sunshine had his piercing green eyes. It looked like a picture a football jock would give his girlfriend to put on her vanity. He glanced up at Sunshine, who seemed a mix of angry and regretful. He put his hand on hers. "I'm sorry. There's a lot I could say about it but it won't change what happened and it won't bring him back. I never had to deal with that, But in a way I did lose both my parents, and my sister. You still have your mom and family, so there's that" he tried to smile at her but his eyes were still worried.
