Riku's reaction to her father up and leaving reminded her of how Shadow reacted. Well, minus the throwing a chaos spear at a trash can and scaring a stray cat. He had said if Joaquin ever showed his face in Bellerouge, he'd kick his ass. Riku would probably not be far behind now. She sighed wistfully as he put his hands over her, actually looking up into his blue eyes.
He had said that he used the aloof card against girls he didn't find interesting. That look? Far from aloof. He was worried and sympathetic. Sunshine usually hated people looking at her like that, seeing her as the ditzy blonde girl who just got onto the force because the ultimate cop approved. Riku wasn't looking at her that way, and it made her glad. She hid the picture back behind her cards.
"Mom married John when I was still a kid. I was too young to really understand what was going on between them, you know? Because next thing you know, John is taking me to the back room and showing me and Thomas how to properly hand knead bread."

"It's good you have a good father figure to look up to, instead of that bum that you have for a real dad. No offense meant. It's just dads who abandon their kids really bother me, along with abuse. I can't stand it. It's not fair to anybody" He smiled. "You have a good family now, that's all that you need to focus on. It's better to forget your dad who abandoned you right?"

"...Sorry if I made you think of your own dysfunctional family stuff..." Sunshine apologized. She wasn;t in on the whole Lafayette famiyl drama, but from what she understood from rich clients, Riku gave up the title to voodoo king to become a cop, therefore handing the title over to Weiss. The good news? Weiss had a good voodoo role model. The bad news? The Lafayettes' reputation was pretty much turned to mulch. "...Um..." Embarrassed, she picked up the wine menu, prentending to be engrossed but really, she was struggling to pronounce some of the names. "What kind of name is Zinfandel? It sounds like a reject wizard."

Riku shook his head. "It's nothing to worry about. I'm always thinking about my family to be honest. I'm worried about my sister, and disgusted with my parents. They could have done so much, but instead they're just going to lose their children. If I have my way, if I can talk to Weiss, my parents will never be able to get their hands on my sister again" Riku picked up his own drink menu and looked it over. He put a hand over his mouth to keep from laughing at Sunshine's comment. He grinned at her. "Maybe a reject wizard went into the business of making wine grapes after his other career failed. But it's a bold wine. For lamb you want a softer ,more fruity wine. I suggest a Merlot/Cabernet mix or Chianti Classico. Both are quite soft fruity flavors. I suggest the Merlot. It's personally a preferred wine"

"Key-on-tea?" Sunshine asked. So that what the nice wine that movie maniac liked to drink. She had always assumed he wanted a nice "candy". But nope, it was wine. Well that made sense. As she set it down, she figured with the prices, it wouldn't be fair to pick at Riku's lined pockets like his doting admirers had done; that wasn't fair. "I think I'll just stick to ménage a trois; red blend, easier to pronounce, and well, my family drinks it all the time because it's not that expensive." She set the wine menu down.

"Yes. It's a good wine" he set his menu down and looked at her. "I don't mind spending a little extra for you" he told her gently. "Get whatever wine you want, don't be afraid of the price. I'm splurging on you because I want to" He blushed underneath his fur and looked down. "You're worth splurging on. Besides, I'm mostly careful with my money. I have more than enough to spare on dinner" Just then their dinner and a handbasket of wines to choose from were brought up the stairs. Riku was given all his dishes and Sunshine was given hers. Riku picked his wine from the basket and smiled at Sunshine. "Pick whatever you want" he told her again.

Sunshine opened her mouth to object, to say that it was okay, she was just trying to understand the basics of fancy places. That really, wine was something she chose to drink when she was...well, technically this was a celebration. That thought cut her off, and she shut her mouth. He said she was worth splurging money on. Her cheeks reddened. Instead of objecting, she twiddled her thumbs and ducked her eyes down to them.
"And to be fair, utilities plus rent is like bottles times three," she joked.
The steaming plates were brought out, along with the bottles of wine. Riku told her to pick what she wanted. Her eyes scanned the selection, and finally, she beamed as she grabbed the blend labeled 'Silk'. It looked similar to the bottles she had. The waiter popped it open and poured out the crimson drink the faint scent of cherries reminding Sunshine that, no, that wasn't blood being poured out.

She looked embarrassed and pleased with his comment and that made him feel better. Knowing she was happy with him and his actions felt really good. This wasn't at all like romancing other girls. It wasn't tedious and boring. He was honestly invested in the happiness and well-being of Sunshine and really didn't mind splurging on her. He watched her pick out her wine and watched it being poured into her glass. He was very happy. "Bon appetite" he said as the waiter left them alone once more. Riku began eating, remembering his training for proper manners. "How do you like it?" he asked after a few minutes.

"Wait, the wine or the food?"
The waiter had left Sunshine and Riku alone. She had nothing to hide behind, nothing that would shield her from the giddiness. His etiquette lessons were shown in eating, and she struggled to remember what was the proper utensil. She sufficed with grabbing the largest fork and sharpened knife, carefully cutting into her lamb. The gamey flavor was still there, along with the brightness of the asparagus. She swallowed, replying with,
"Not bad. No, wait, better than that."

He chuckled. "Both I guess. It's all one meal after all. It's really good here so I was wondering what you thought" He hoped that didn't sound weird. It probably sounded weird. He grinned when she said the food was better than not bad. "Worth its stars then?" he asked before biting into his own food and pausing to chew and swallow the bit. "So, thanks for being there during the case. You provided a lot of insight into the case I wouldn't have been able to see on my own. I'm really grateful"

Sunshine laughed. Just because Riku worded something weird didn't mean she got the meaning of it. It came with the job territory, both being a cop and a baker; if someone said something sort of jumbled, they probably meant something simpler, so it was best to think of it that way. "I'd add an extra star, both for the food and...well, for the company." She was about to poke into her lamb again when Riku thanked her for the help. It made her realize that outside of Shadow, she was never really thanked for her input. He had been the only cop to make her feel like she had done something right. Hearing it from Riku...well, it just made her smile wider until it looked dopey. "I remember my first case. Shadow and I were called to check out a werewolf. I..." she laughed, "I threw a doggie toy at it. Much to our shock, it worked. It was so fixated on it to fight off Shadow's tranquilizer shot."

Riku blushed at the compliment and looked down. "The company alone makes it worth five stars" he said, a little shyly. He'd felt a fluttery feeling at her compliment. It was wonderful. He grinned when she did, probably mirroring her dopey smile. "You threw a doggy toy? That's actually pretty hilarious. I mean, great that it worked but it's just really funny. Some of the things that work, right? Like in voodoo. You'd never believe some of the things that work.Like smearing honey on voodoo dolls to entice spirits to help work the magic. I use it for benevolent uses like protection, though I know voodoo dolls can be used harmfully"

A tint of color appeared near Riku's cheeks. So it was true; anthromorphs COULD blush! Well, Shadow wasn't an athromorph, but she had never seen him turn red from embarrasment or flattery; not counting the fur when he got intensely angry. "What can I say? I was a rookie. Back then, I only knew about werewolves and I put two and two together." Riku went out to describe some voodoo rituals, and immediately she became enticed. Honey on a voodoo doll to help? That was a new ritual. "What other voodoo rituals get the job done well?" she asked.

"Coulda used 'sit' and glared and he probably would have sat" Riku said with a chuckle. He scratched his chin and shrugged. "We-ell...there's binding spells or banishing spells that magically push people away. But my specialty has always been protection spells. Like the Witch Bottle. It supposedly protected a house from any sort of curse or demon magic. Ironically, we didn't have any buried by our doors. Perhaps that would have kept demons from busting up the house..."

"Or maybe it got broken during the party. You know crazy drunkards are. Even the richest folks can't take alcohol." Ironically, Sunshine had sipped her wine with that comment. Well, she must have chosen right because the sweetness-tart combo matched her meal. If she ever took cooking classes besides stovetop popcorn or microwaving leftovers, she would have to try and copy this.
