"Or someone stole it. Regardless, Demons went rampant at my family's party, and maybe they wouldn't have been able to if the Witch Bottle had been there. Or a blessed Yew Tree, which can literally eat any evil that tries to pass through the doors. We didn't have one because they're known for eating even benign voodoo spells. Stupid tree" he grinned at her. "But I'm probably boring you with talk of voodoo. It's pretty common in Louisiana anyway"

"Correction, Riku," Sunshine shot him a quizzical look to counteract his grin. Her fork dinged lightly as he missed a grain of rice from her fork, "tourist-y voodoo is common in Louisiana. Stuff we use on the police force or stuff I didn't even think about, that's all news to me." She pushed some into her mouth. Around mid-chew, she swallowed, asking, "So...I've learned plenty about you that isn't corrupted by the tabloids, what would you like to know about little old me?"

"Oh, I forget. To you, all you'd know is the tourist stuff ,not the real stuff. The real stuff is pretty common here too. Maybe not as 'pure' as the stuff in Africa but it's pretty prevalent. At least, for me as a practitioner" He had to remember Sunshine wasn't like him. Voodoo hadn't been her entire life like it had been his. He paused and considered. "Well, I've heard rumors about how you and Shadow met but I guess if it's not too much could you tell me the story of how you decided to be a cop yourself?"

At that request, all light and giddiness drained from Sunshine's face. The sallow nature was even grimmer than when she talked about Joaquin. She sighed hollowly. "I thought it'd be easier to talk about over time." She looked down at her 75% demolished plate. A stain of red remained from where the lamb was leaking. The rice was scattered about. She took one last shuddering breath, and started her story;
'I had been minding my own business. Friday the 13th. No bad luck all day. I had been closing up the bakery when they jumped me. I never heard or saw them coming. Vampires."
She remembered the waking up in chains. The evil grins of Jasmine, that weird giggler vampire who was now long dead, and that other vampire who...well...she didn't get a good look at his face. She remembered how the giggler inappropriately touched her, how Jasmine stroked her hair. How they would threaten to bite her while she sat doing nothing as the sun hadn't gotten high or she had absorbed its power.
"Three days later, their hideout was found by the cops. I couldn't call for help because I was scared of what they'd do. I faked sleep. I woke up and there was, well, Shadow. I didn't trust him at first because of his coloration...kind of...shallow of me, I admit. We bonded through a shared imprisonment. The way he talked about his powers, how he wanted to clean the streets, it was...inspiring. He made me realize maybe using my hair just to heal burns was stupid. So, I tapped into every ounce of what I remembered. My sun power got us out, oh, and Shadow's speed made a quick getaway for the both of us. Flash forward a couple weeks later and he comes into Nevermore saying his partners had bailed. He said ti was a crazy idea, but with my sun powers, it'd be a great asset to weed out crimes at night. Between his points and, well, wanting to find out what happened to Dad, I...sort of found it a cool idea. Shadow taught me everything I knew; he got me signed up for thw twelve-week tuition at the academy. Next thing I know, I'm in a blue uniform getting my Others Unit badge and Shadow smiling - yeah, he smiles - as I shake his hand to be his partner."

Riku winced as she told her story. Maybe he should have asked what else was on his mind; what growing up in a family like hers was even like. "I'm...really sorry that happened. That must have been really awful. But at least you got a happy ending with Shadow as your partner" he smiled and then lowered his eyes and toyed with his fork. "When I was growing up, the pressure to be Voodoo King was enormous. Almost from the time Weiss and I could put correct shapes in the right pegs, and were toddling, we were expected to organize ingredients correctly. I learned to read by reading spellbooks. My dad...whenever I didn't get a spell right, even the smallest mistake he'd..." Riku closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"He'd hit me and Weiss. Sometimes mom would get in the way and try to protect us. She did everything to make it bearable, but..." Riku shrugged. "One day I'd gotten a witch jar wrong and instead of repelling evil it attracted it. Dad was so angry he came at me with a cane. I fell down in fear and mom...mom blocked the blow and got a massive scar on her cheek make-up couldn't hide. She died that day. On the inside. Never tried to protect us again"
Riku ran a hand over his ears and looked up at Sunshine. "It was that day that made me want to be a cop. Nobody made any comment about the scar or mom's sudden distance. They just took it in stride. I wanted to protect families from what I went through, I wanted to make people notice that this happened and how awful it was. I just...wanted to do right and protect because I couldn't protect my mom then, you know?"

Sunshine's green eyes got wider at Riku's story. Being kidnapped by evil was one thing, but to be succumbed to child abuse. She remembered Weiss's scar but at the time didn't bother to ask. Had their father given it to her? Had Riku been trying to keep her out since their mother chose to walk away? She shook her head sadly. No tears fell but they might as well have. She leaned across the table and patted his hand.
"I'm so sorry."
What else could be said?

"I'm sorry for what happened to you, too" he said and held her hand. "But the events brought about help to the force, so there's that" he smiled at her. "I'm fine, though. And I protected Weiss as much as I could. But I had to be strong, be noble. I had to become the black sheep of the family so I could pursue my dreams. All I regret is I'm not there to continue to protect Weiss. I feel rotten but.." he shrugged helplessly. "Thanks for listening Sunshine. You're...literally the only one who even knows"

"You mean you never told Aqua?"
Probably because of the extremity of the situation. That and, apart from the Colt Brothers, Sunshine never talked with duos on the force. She and Shadow had been partners through thick and thin, and at this point, there wasn't a thing he didn't know about her. He'd be spilling his heart now that 'Disparion' had his memories returned.

He shifted a bit uncomfortably. "Well...She never really explained much about Terra and...I mean, she's great but I don't want her trying to actively kill my dad, ya know?" he said in a weak attempt at a joke. He sighed. "Aqua and I are still learning about each other. It's going to take time for me to trust her. I don't really trust anyone. Except maybe Weiss. And you for some reason. I just...I really trust you, Sun. You make telling this almost easy"

"No one's...ever called me Sun before. Call me Sunny and," she impaled her fork on the last bite of lamb. It was her attempt at making a joke just as much as he was making the joke of Aqua killing his abusive father. The fork stuck straight u and she giggled nervously, popping the last bite into her mouth with a nervous giggle. The waiter returned with the check. Hesitantly, she reached for her clutch to grab a few bills, sliding them under the now empty wine bottles. "Don't worry, this is just the tip," she explained. "Kind of a...mutual respect for waiters habit."

"Do you...want me to call you Sunny? Because I can if that's what you prefer!" Riku said anxiously. Their dinner devolved into an anxious silence broken by Sunshine's giggling, which didn't annoy Riku but made him wonder if he had really ruined his chances with her that badly. He smiled as she slipped the money under the wine glasses and fumbled out his wallet and paid in cash the 85 dollar check.
"Thank you for the tip miss, and you both for your patronage" said the waiter with a smile.

Sunshine flipped a hair out of her eyes. With it, she flashed him a cheeky smile. "Sunny is the one nickname I despise. It's about as lazy as lazy can get. But, Sun," the cheekiness became more genuine, "I like that more." The check was paid, but that didn't mean the dinner date had to end. She looked out at the river view once again, just soaking in the atmosphere. The old-school lamplights were being brought out, making it look like a Gothic Thomas Kinkade painting. Fireflies were dotting the sky in the distance, looking brighter against the blood colored night. She'd have to find a way to capture that in a painting later.

He gave relieved laughter. "Then Sun it is" he said, feeling incredibly relieved at the information. Good, he hadn't done something incredibly stupid and ruined his chances of getting to know her more. He followed her line of vision and looked at the view. It was lovely. The fireflies looked like ghostlights against the red of the sky and the lamplights flickered against the reflection in the water. It looked almost ghostly and he liked it, but maybe that was just the mystic in him.

Sunshine quietly joined the laughing. Sun. It was something she'd be hearing him call her in her mind, even when this was over. When Aqua came back with the cure to return him to his human form, they would have to do this again. Sure, Riku was a giant bunny, but that would go away. Besides, he still had those blue eyes that radiated with knowledge of voodoo mastery. She looked back at him with a smile.,
"Riku...I needed this...so...thanks." ((end thread))
