"What would you do... if you knew?" he asked.
That was his greatest fear. That Shadow and Sunshine wouldn't be able to see past the mask and all the good he tried doing for the city. He was scared that they would arrest him the moment they knew. Granted, in asking, Shadow could still lie. But he wanted to trust the police officer. Maybe even hang up the mask one day. He couldn't spend the rest of his days leaping over rooftops. He also had to think of Yang. If anything happened to him, what would happen to her?

"...Tough one."
It was a tough one. Shadow had befriended so many people that were considered 'thugs' and 'abd i th city's eyes, and in the eyes of the law. If Chat's identity came out to him, it'd be a big moral question. Would he do what was right in the law and put a silver pair of cuffs to go with the catsuit or would he make up a lie to protect Chat? He had seen the good Chat did in the city, and better yet, Chat had proof to show his crimes were emant with the best intetions. Just like that old wives tale; the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
"Because we've seen you do a lot for the city, we'd back you up on that. It won't be much, but I know the truth as to why you, well, do what you do. It wouldn't be fair to just lock you up. But if I'm forced to...know that I take no pleasure in it."

"I guess I'll just have to not give you a reason."
Keep avoiding Shadow and Sunshine when he was himself it was. He couldn't tell them. They would be loyal to the badge and do their job. Even if as Shadow said, he wouldn't be happy about it. He had gone this far without Nevermore. As much as he hated to admit it, he didn't go in the same social circles as Sunshine or Shadow. He also didn't frequent the same places as they did. So avoidance wasn't entirely that difficult to maintain.

Shadow looked away from Chat. First heartbreak over Sunshine and then turmoil over how he felt if he knew the identity of the cat burglar he was starting to like. It was like the world was just taking one pile of dirt on him over and over. "It's been a rough couple of weeks," he mumbled heatedly.

"I'm sorry," he said sincerely.
He was sorry. He didn't want to force Shadow to choose between his job or his 'friend'. It was better this way, he decided. To keep the people who met Chat separate from the people who knew Adrien. If he were around Sunshine he'd be too tempted to call her 'My Lady' as if that weren't a dead give away. He was not going to let a name slip up be the thing that gave him away. Not only would it be embarrassing, they would never let him live it down if it was. Yang wouldn't anyways. At least that was one thing he could count on. It was for the best. After all, in the comic books, Jim Gordan - the police commissioner - never found out who Batman was. The character simply hadn't cared to.
"Is there anything I could do?" he asked.

"To be honest, I don't know." Shadow shook his head.
Chat was one of the most well-meaning kids in this entire city. That wasn't even counting Yang. Chat was protecting her, which was the biggest thing he could do for Shadow. If he were more touchy-feels, he'd ask Chat to stay and talk. Company was preferable to watching the news all alone...maybe thar was what he needed, just someone who wasn't Sunshine to talk to. He had Omar and Ralph, but conflirting schedules didn't make good hangout timings
"..So...any low crime get strung up by the lucky cat?"

Chat frowned. There had to be something he could do. He sighed and settled himself down to get comfortable. This was going to be a long talk. Obviously, he couldn't make Sunshine return Shadow's feelings if she had fallen for Riku, but distracting wasn't hard. Maybe he could leave him a bottle of liquor or something. Wouldn't be hard to find Shadow's favorite brand of alcohol. But that was later. This was now. So he would have to settle for just talking right now.
"Helped clean up after the prison riots." he said. "But I ran into another man in a mask. Calls himself Kid Flash. I think you'll like him. He's fast like you are.
Chat was going to leave out the bit about having Kid Flash and Shadow race to see who was faster. Though, it would have been very amusing. Granted, Shadow might not like him because the guy seemed to want to hit on the ladies in the BPD, but Shadow could tell him off if he crossed a line. Chat already warned the man about Sunshine's handy frying pan.

"Let me know if you are going on a crime spree with him. I'll 'get called to help the human unit.'" But the air quotes and trace of a smile hinted Shadow's piqued interest. There had only been one person that was Shadow's rival to speed, and that a solitary fae Vivia, who had quit the squad because catching crooks was too easy fo her. The only time Shadow had to leave the Others Unit crimes was if a human officer needed assistance in the case a crime became unsolvable by human needs. It was more common than people on the force realized.

"Actually, he's on the law-abiding side." Chat said. "He's just chasing after bad guys and tying them up with a big red bow for you."
Kid Flash was a good guy. Chat did not want his reputation as a thief to tarnish this man or get him caught up in anything. There was nothing illegal about what Kid Flash had been doing. He was protected by Good Samaritan acts and laws. He was just a good guy in the right place, making citizen arrests. He was just doing his job without getting paid. The guy was nice though.

"Oh, he was the one leaving us the presents?" Shadow asked. "I thought for sure that was you. But I guess every Robin Hood needs a Will Scarlet."
Hopefully Kid Flash didn't step too close into Chat's terriotry. There was a fine line between vigilante and being another one of the criminals. The Good Smaritan laws could only protect him from the interactions, not any collateral damage caused be it by him or the criminals. Plus, KID was a big hint this guy meant well, but had no idea what he was up against,

"Pretty sure it was him. I normally leave a calling card so everyone knows it was me." Chat shrugged. "He just wants to help."
Chat had watched him interact with criminals. He saved a woman from a mugging. No questions asked. Just knocked the guy out. No real injuries so the criminal couldn't play it up like he had been abused before his 'capture' and earn sympathy when he went to trial. Chat just liked to bury his 'victims' in evidence if they tried to fight back against him. Like a 'I'm watching you and I know you stole the last cookie from the cookie jar. Naughty' type of situation. He scared most of the people straight. Not Cinder though.

Shadow nodded solemnly "It's not fair; He shouldn't have to clean up the mess I made," he mumbled. The sky was red, demons were running wild in the streets, and now criminals were let loose. He had caused the Black War just by grieving over a girl. Here he was pining over one, but luckily no portals to hell were opening. Everything bad that happened in Bellerouge had happened because of him.

"Self loathing is really unbecoming of you, Shadow," Chat replied.
He might have been an artificial... creation from Disparion, but he hadn't chosen to be. He didn't make a mess or start the prison riots. He hadn't told Thrax to go and bust out the worst people. He hadn't done anything except try to keep people safe the only way he knew how. He thought he was doing the right thing. Chat couldn't blame him for that, but Shadow's self depreciating outlook on things was a bit of a mood killer.
"You can't control what other people do Shadow." he said. "Not me. Not Disparion. Not Sunshine. Not Thrax. None of this was your fault."

"You don't understand. I started the Black War. I let the demons that ruin this town in."
It was something that Disparion had given him, and...welll...it was true. Disparion's plan all along was for Shadow to be a kind of opener of hell as he couldn;t access a door outside of the domain. By unleashing a full blast when mourning Maria, Shadow had done just that. He had opened a rip that let demons come into Bellerouge, along with multiple other evils, and ruin the town.
But the Professor, and even Maria, had denied him that consciousness. The consciousness of being what Disparion wanted him to do.
"I just.." he sighed. "How is it after knowing what I am, you still tried to help?"

"You didn't do that on purpose."
Things with the Black War were complicated. However, Chat liked to believe he knew Shadow well enough to say that he didn't intentionally cause a war. He had just been in a really bad place. He had lost so much in the span of time the war broke out. There's no saying what anyone else would have done in that situation. Grief seemed to cling to the BPD officers. But the pain was like the pressure that either turned coal into diamonds or ground rocks into dust. This was one of those moments.
"Well, we're friends." Chat shrugged. "You didn't choose how you were made. A lot of this was forced on you, Shadow."
