Shadow shook his head with a quiet laugh. Cat puns. Why did he have to bring up cat puns? They could be going on all night of quoting the book. Provided the book of puns had been written, surprisingly not by Chat.
The laughter quickly turned to awkwardness. That 'Oh' made Shadow realize what he had implied. Chat wouldn't be able to go because, well, his true identity didn't know Sunshine. That and her family would no doubt disapprove of a masked cat burglar walking into Sunshine's house. The only "valuables" in Sunshine's house were paintings that went to silent auctions and those varied from person to person based on who wanted them for a high price.
"Oh. I'm trying to think of gift ideas. And...well...as you can tell, the graveyard incident's far out of her mind. She always found some joy after a crisis..."

"And you're asking me for ideas?" Chat teased.
He smiled. He actually liked the fact Shadow was going to him for advice. It meant that Shadow trusted him to notice little things about his partner. Little ticks and things that Sunshine liked. There was a few times she had paint flecks in her nail beds. Or that frying pan he was sure she would have threatened him with at one point or another.
"Hmm... If it were me, I'd get something I know she would use. Something she likes. You could never go wrong with jewelry. She strikes me as a gold type. Silver clashes." Chat said. "Get something with an emerald and you could say it's for protection against demons like Thrax or Vanitas."

"Well, Jim and Dimitri down the hall had...other implications with their ideas."
Mostly because Dimitri was better at getting girls into bed with him. Or rather, he'd like to think that, when all he got was a slap in the face and a scowl from Shadow and Jim. He had suggested getting some kind of artisan bustier. Yes, Sunshine was a bohemian dresser, but a bustier was where she drew the line. Plus, none of the designs in Magnolia Road were quite right for her.
The idea of emeralds on gold was...actually a good one. With her blonde hair and green eyes, she already had the setup for it. Plus, the cover story of it being for defensive measures...it was believable.
"Let's just hope she hasn't started trying to make emerald jewelry. Or pouring crumbled crystals into her paint..."

"Yeah, I'm probably better off not knowing."
He didn't want a reason to hate someone without meeting them. If Shadow was hinting at what Chat feared he was. Sunshine was a classy girl. She deserved better than treating her like she was some easy to win over trollop. It only depended on how nice the gift was. If Shadow continued to strive to win Sunshine back from Riku, it might drive a rift between the three of them and no one would end up happy. He didn't want to see that either.
"She probably hasn't. Emeralds aren't cheap these days since a lot of people are getting them for protection. Crushing them is hard too." Chat shrugged. "Or you could get her a new apron? Something you make yourself. It shows you're thoughtful."

"I already got her enough baking supplies to sink s ship. That little cast iron she carries? Yours truly got it for her when she graduated the police academy. Sort of her...lucky rabbit's..."
Shadow trailed off. Lucky rabbits foot. Riku had become s rabbit. Aqua had found the cure when visiting the Seelie library. Maybe breaking the cure would be a present. He could give her a leg up in her relationship and get over her at the same time. Nah. A bit too far. Especially since he hadn't gotten the cure himself.
"Anyways, emeralds it is....speaking of which, what happened to that jewel we found you with when we first met "

"She'll like whatever you get her because it came from you."
That explained it. Shadow was a gifter. It was easier for him to show his affection for someone through thoughtful and meaningful than he could say verbally. Those were all personal things. Things that there was no doubt in Chat's mind that Sunshine would like, enjoy and use. They were things he knew were special to her. Though, baking supplies expired, it seemed like Sunshine was always well stocked despite it.
"I had it checked out for legitimacy and damage." Chat said. "And returned it to the couple that guy cheated. What ended up happening to him?"

"Got his license revoked. Disappeared. Not murdered, just slunk into the city with a criminal stain on his permanent record."
Normally, Shadow would be extra secretive of confidential information. But, Chat had done his homework on the criminal, so no point in being the "good cop". Besides, if stealing a family heirloom to display on a museum with consent wasn't a crime, he'd have to turn in his badge. The best part was? The jewel was rightfully returned. The good guys won tha day

"That won't do. That won't do at all."
The guy had to be punished for what he did. If he just disappeared, then he could do the exact same thing to someone else in some other city. It was now personal and Chat was going to have to take care of things himself. It wasn't the victory that Chat wanted, but what else could the police do? The guy was gone. Well, from the circles they could search. Money talks. Chat Noir could buy information easily with the money he made as Adrien Agreste.

Shadow glared at Chat. No, it wasn't what he wanted, but his hands were tied. This was something lawyers had to dispute. A cat burglar who caught him red handed coming in as a witness was bad for his identity. That, and if this guy found out who Chat was and that he was the one who got his license revoked, Shadiw didn't want the kid getting hurt.
"Don't even THINK about going after him. He has no chances of finding a job. Not after the media went nuts in reporting the incident."
There had newspaper articles, a small segment on TV, even some officers were interviewed. Human officers, not the Others Unit, as apparently supernatural displays weren't "to be trifled with"

"Sure, not legally but you have to scour the black market!" Chat said passionately.
He grimaced. He had the means to go after the man. But no power to actually have any sway behind that. Unless, he gave the information over to the police. All of it. All of his connections. All of his programs. Everything. He might have to stop stealing things from the rich. But was that really so bad? He could still deliver goods to people. And stealing from Cinder was what got Yang hurt in the first place. No, he would have to turn over a new leaf so to speak. Maybe a file would have to make its way to Shadow's desk.

"Chat. That's just one scum over.." he counted on his fingers, then gave up, "the 225,000 people in this city. Most of them are going to need you, too. Especially in a town where most of the city hates us."
It was a fact that burned him to the core. Hated by the people they swore to protect, and also hated by the humans they agreed to work with. There was no happy in between. If it weren't for them, the city would have been literally sucked dry. Eaten by demons. All of the lovely apocalyptic visions put in every horror story written by man. Shadow was tired of it. Maybe that was also why he had left; Deep down, he wanted to see the city burn

"You're never going to make the entire city like you," Chat pointed out. "You can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time."
He had learned that through his father. For years, Adrien had tried and tried to do whatever he could to be a 'good' son, but it was never enough for the man. One day, Adrien just realized, it wasn't worth it. He wasn't making himself happy that way. Granted, he still did what his father asked, but it was only the bare minimum of what his father wanted. His father wanted a lot of things from Adrien, just not things that Adrien was willing to give him.
"Maybe I'll get the new guy on it. He's pretty fast." he teased.
Kid Flash would be happy for a chance to prove himself.

"Well, he'll have to catch me first," Shadow teased in return. He had taught Chat the in-out of working with police. This new kid will have to learn again. First lesson; never challenge a cop capable at skating up to super sonic speeds.
Just as he was about to make another quip after his chuckle, an electric guitar riff echoed nearby, followed by vibrations; his phone. The caller ID was the emergency hotline. His face fell as he reluctantly walked over and picked it up. So much for chatting with a friend.
"Griffiths," he answered in the usual rough but tough voice he maintained on the job. He listened, nodding, and answering, "Understood. I'll be there in a minute."
He hung up and cast Chat Noir a regretful look of literally running off. "Got a bit-and-run off Silver and Coal, so duty calls. Thanks for the chat." That was the last thing he said before hurdling off the balcony, tuck-rolling to land on his feet, and gliding off to meet with the police to check out the damage. A glimmer of renewed faith was there. He'd find a way to thank Chat later. Maybe actually letting him in on a crime... ((End thread))
