"But you don't like him? Because Sunshine likes him?" Chat asked.
He did seem rather bitter about the whole, Sunshine liking the 'exiled LaFayette' as Shadow put it. Avoiding his name like it was a plague was not a good sign. Chat bit the inside of his cheek. He had a chance to tell Sunshine how Shadow felt, but he stopped himself because it wasn't his secret to tell. He had tried to let it remain something special for Shadow to reveal, but in his absence, Riku must have stepped up and comforted Sunshine. Shadow had waited too long. By doing so, he was late. Chat frowned. He didn't know what he would have done if he was 'too late' to tell Yang how he felt.

"It's complicated."
That was the only way Shadow knew how to put it. To not like someone because they stole someone you loved was selfish. That ed to a road of darkness, and a road he wanted to avoid at any given cost. Now that he knew that his father was the lord of all evil, it was even worse. Besides, the stuff he did see Riku do in the department was admirable. To not like someone who had a lot of potential...that was unfair as well. As for not liking him because Sunshine liked him...that was immature as immature could get.

"Story for another time?" Chat guessed.
He gave Shadow a meek smile. It was easy to like and dislike someone at the same time. Adrien loved and hated his father. But he didn't want to come off too strong for the officer, smothering him in concern or forcing him to deal with things he wasn't ready to deal with. Shadow was alive. That's what mattered most. He might have been rather battered confidence wise, but that was outside of Chat's hands to fix, or Adrien's hands. Things were hard enough as it was. He didn't want to add to Shadow's stresses or his burdens. The guy needed time to pull himself together before he had to face the world.

"Yeah, you could say that."
The biggest kicker was, in truth, getting to know Riku more. Perhaps by doing that, it would decrease the saltiness. That would require Shadow swallowing his pride. He had done it when confronting Pitch, and he hated that nasty aftertaste. Talking with Chat about it was making the salty taste go away, though.

"Yeah... sorry..." Chat mumbled.
What Shadow was going through was tough. Chat wasn't sure what he would do if things had turned sour for him and Yang. It was hard enough as it was dealing with her injury. Knowing she hated him for leaving her alone, would have been agony. Especially since she knew him as Adrien and Chat Noir. being unable to help her or be near her. That would be a torture he wouldn't wish on anyone. But he didn't know how to help Shadow. Or if he even was helping.

Just talking about the turmoil was loosening the edge. Shadow had always kept his feelings bottled since his anger had destroyed all the city, but to be spilling everything out to Chat...he forgot that it could be therapeutic. Chat might not have been, say, stealing a plate of coins meant for charity, but having someone he trusted besides Sunshine was enough. He ws helping, just by sitting and listening to him act and behave like some pining, grieving person that he normally would be annoyed by.

"It gets better you know..." he said. "Just give it some time."
He knew loss. He lost his mother when he was a little boy. His father might have still been alive, but he may as well as have died too. It stung at first. All he wanted was his mother. He turned to his father for some help, to get through it, but the man had withdrawn into his work. It took him until now, to don a mask and make friends of his own. Shadow, Sunshine, Yang, Weiss. They were all his friends. They made things easier. He only hoped he was doing the same for Shadow and Sunshine.

"If I seem ungrateful, it's because I'm not used to all this." Well, the truth was there.
Shadow never had, well, a young man express concern. Heck, to have an army of people show that he cared. It wasn't that he wasn't relieved that people wanted to see him come out okay, butvrather what did one do? He had always been the one to come to the rescue. The other way around? It was news.

"That takes time too." Chat shrugged.
He didn't exactly think that his closest friends would be cops, or that he had to hide apart of himself from them in order to protect them from losing their jobs, but that's how things turned out. That took time for him to get used to. Shadow would eventually come to terms with what happened. But it was partially good since he wasn't going to try to force Sunshine to return his feelings. Some people went over the deep in like that. Shadow was an easy to like sort of guy. He would find someone else.

Enough with the sobbing and self-pity. Shadow stood up from the couch with a new light in his eyes. So what if Sunshine didn;t recooperate his feelings? It was his own fault for not saying so. She didn't turn him away when he had come back with the intense news of his teue heritage. Turning her away, and turning Chat away, was only giving into what Disparion wanted. He would have to fight through that crippling pain. Chat had done it, and that meant he'd have to follow suit.
"So..." he mused, "enough with listening to me whine."

"And here I thought you were going to send me out to find a cheese pairing for the wine," Chat laughed.
He didn't mind that Shadow was 'whining' as the man put it. He was allowed to be upset with how things turned out. After all, it was less than ideal. That was just how things were. Shadow seemed like he was doing better, however temporarily that was. He managed a smile. Here had been, bragging how he had finally got the girl (though bragging may have been a strong word) when Shadow hadn't. He resolved to keep his talks about Yang a little more professional at least until Shadow found someone else in his life that he could share it with.

Shadow returned the laugh. "Yeah, especially since I'm more a beer Black Russian sort." Wait, was talking about alcohol to a minor allowed? Not that Chat wasn't the type, but he didn't reek of alcohol like some of the criminals they bagged. Combine that with the rancid smell of carnage from vampires and weres, and it was a stench no one forgot easily

"I'll remember that for next time. We can swap stories over drinks." he said.
He might not have looked it, but he was of legal drinking age. His father said it was good he looked as young as he did. It would help him 'keep his career' longer. Adrien didn't care about his career as a model. Naturally, his father did. His youthful appearance kept money coming into the family business and the family bank account. Adrien didn't drink often, but he could make an exception for a friend.

"I take it White Russians are too cliched?" Shadow joked.
Well this was new Chat must have had that rare moment in which she was looking younger than he actually was. He couldn't have been a demon...but it would explain how he hid in darkness so well. But, deducing the kid's identity wasn't fair, especially since they agreed it'd be best to be quiet about it; especially when the moment of truth was revealed at the wrong moment.
"So...Sunshine's birthday is in a week."
Well, dropped the ball pretty heavily on that. He had plans of what he wanted to do fro her for a while. A small gathering of close friends; of course, her stepfamily was in on the game, too. It would, naturally, be a surprise. "Any...reminders of her while you were out?"

"Ha ha." Chat said dryly. "I'm pawful surprised you even know that."
Shadow was making a recovery, if he was able to laugh and make jokes. That put Chat in a better mood. He sat down and got a little more comfortable. Odd for a thief to be comfortable with a cop. What a world they lived in. Under normal circumstances it just shouldn't have worked. Yet there they were, talking about having drinks together. He would laugh about it later. When Shadow wasn't there to make fun of him for the irony.
"Oh."
He wouldn't be able to go. Adrien didn't know Sunshine. And there was no way he would be able to slip away during the day time as Chat Noir. Birthday gifts were customary between friends, right? He didn't want her to think he didn't care. But he had options to get her something and her still know it was from Chat Noir. Couriers and delivery boys. Kids were easy to pay off for that sort of work. A good twenty and they would be ready to start egging cop cars. Granted he wouldn't have them do that. He could find someone to drop off something for Sunshine. The cake was already going to be ready.
"Reminders? No. I haven't seen her since the graveyard incident..."
