Shadow had no comment. On the one hand, he really couldn't have controlled what he had been if the professor and Maria didn't want him to know about Disparion. They didn't know the Devil would try and get what he wanted through the deal. The professor's death was punishment for not following through on their deal. At least, that's what Shadow put it as being. Sure, the Devil didn't send the government to shut down the lab, but the line-up made sense to him. The portal hadn't been in purpose. Heck, at the time, he had been too grieved to even care all hell was raining to the world.
"At least you don't see me any different. It's the others I'm afraid about...I told Yang, but as of now you and her are the only ones who know. If I told Sunshine the truth, she'd probably never look at me the same."

"You're making an awful lot of decisions for them. Why don't you let them decide whether they look at you differently?" Chat asked.
Shadow let a lot of things hold him back. His fear that Sunshine would never love him back. He hadn't told her because he thought she would reject him outright due to his appearance. But now he was upset because she had found someone else. Now, he was pushing his friends away because he had already decided that they wouldn't like him due to things outside of his control or accidents his past had. If he kept it up, he would be old and alone because there was only so much pushing friends could take. Chat was lucky that Yang hadn't told him to piss off after he left her the way he had. Shadow might not be as lucky if he kept doing it.

Shadow flunked onto his couch with a groan. No exasperation, no disappointment. All he felt was a sense of dread and guilt. He was a monster, no matter what people told him. Yes, he didn't act the way they traditionally did, but it still weighed that he was originally created to bring on destruction of mankind. Yet people has shown him out of darkness and it made him want to fight back that destruction. He tried to do good, fight evil, but it had only been a matter of time for his true nature to come out...

"You're not giving them enough credit!" Chat insisted. "They all gathered together because they were worried about you!"
Anna and Sunshine had panicked when they thought he was bleeding. Elsa brought them information at risk of her own job. Omar was ready to fight an army of demons if he had to. The whole thing happened rather quickly for Chat, but he had been worried about Shadow as well. It's why he stopped by - to make sure that Shadow was okay. He had stopped in on Sunshine once before. It wasn't like he could make house calls as Adrien. He folded his arms across his chest in slight annoyance. Shadow was frustrating sometimes.

Shadow didn't even look at Chat. A kid, who was probably a few years older than Maria, was trying to help him out of this situation. But the message was getting too clear. No matter how hard he tried to tell them to stay out, they wouldn't. Why? Because they were concerned. They viewed him as a friend. Chat was here to make sure he was okay. The same reason Omar had wanted to help him, and Sunshine...and by shutting them out, it was going against what he promised Maria. That being friends to those he was helping...
"I guess there's no forcing you out of this...." he sighed with a small shake of his head.

"Now you get it!" Chat chirped happily. "You're stuck with us."
And here the thief thought he was going to have to spend his whole night fighting Shadow back and forth on the topic. At least they hadn't come to blows over it. Shadow was hurting more people than he was helping by trying to 'take this burden on his own' and keep everyone at arm's length. In his real life, Adrien would have given anything to have such kind and loyal friends. But now that Chat Noir was getting out more, his options were dwindling fast. At this rate, Chat and Adrien could not have the same friends because he wouldn't want to force them into making a decision between either of his alter egos. He offered Shadow a smile nevertheless.

"I'd make a 'curiosity killed the car' joke, but, well,"
The rarest thing Shadow did was a big shock to anyone who thought he was the 'always brooding loner' type. The white fur on his chest rose up and down. The corner of his mouth was turning up. The slightest quiet huff of air was getting a touch louder. He was actually laughing.
It was a joke Sunshine would have said, which was probably why he laughed more than he should have. Much like Maria, memories of her would suffice in her absence.

"Satisfaction brought it back," Chat reminded him gently.
But Shadow seemed to have made himself laugh over his little joke. A cat pun no less. Chat might have been proud of that. He offered a half smile in return. It was the first time he had ever heard Shadow laugh. Chat honestly thought that Shadow might have been incapable of doing so, but it seemed he was wrong. The thief was happy to be wrong. Besides, if Shadow was laughing, there was hope for him yet. He wouldn't let this devastate him. He would be able to move on and move past what had happened.

The small laugh quieted as Shadow let the feeling of depression lift off of his chest. Was this how it felt to be...well...enjoying himself? He kind of remembered that weight being lifted when he had been with Sunshine and Yang at Tony's. He felt traces of it when he talked with them still, but with Chat...somehow a cat burglar kid had gotten him to laugh.
"Don't get cocky," he said with a smirk.

"Cocky? Me? Never!" Chat dramatically lamented. "I'm offended you would even suggest such a thing!"
He knew he could be a bit of a show off when he wore the mask. He couldn't help himself. The mask gave him confidence he wasn't allowed to have without it. No one seemed to mind as long as no one got hurt in his antics, which he could proudly say never had happened and never would. He was happy to see that Shadow was finding some humor in something, even if it was laughing at him. He would take his victories where he got them. Plus, bragging rights on being the first person (aside from possibly Sunshine) to make Shadow laugh. That was enough to make the thief's day.

Shadow shook his head with a quiet chuckle. Leave it to overdramatics to make him feel better than usual. He would have arrested a burglar like Chat on the spot. But the comfort level he had with him allowed him to shed a small bit of his edge down.
"How is Yang, anyway? She got released before I did."
Chances were Chat was doing routine checkups on her since her arm was cut by Thrax.

"She's... doing the best she can given the circumstances." Chat said. "Grabbed her something to eat and dropped her off back at her place. Her house is nice. That was really nice of Lafayette to take care of her like that."
And if he were honest, he was probably a little jealous that Riku Lafayette bought Yang a house. Chat's more protective/territorial side wasn't showing though. He wanted to take care of Yang, provide for her if she needed to, be a companion that she asked him to be. He just had to realize, that she would get help and she would meet others who would do nice things for her. It was a good thing she had so many people who cared for her. She needed as much support as she could get because it would take a while for her to get her nerve back.

Shadow nodded with a small sigh of relief. Part of him had wanted to pick Yang up, but, well, timing was not on his side in regards to that. Chat looking out over her was a win-win situation; Yang liked him AND it was someone Shadow trusted; he wouldn't admit that he did, though.
"You know, he's the only Lafayette that gives the family a good name...no wonder Sunshine likes him."
Here he was thinking Riku was throwing his money being a rich guy. But the more he thought about it, the money throw out was a last minute resort. The house was bought for a girl without a home. He hadn't given Sunshine a hard time when she triggered Vanitas' curse. He should ask Aqua if she got a cure for the situation. Sunshine had said the faery had gotten family history for her, but she didn't go into further details as to how....
The depression came back, but not as prominent. Sunshine deserved Riku, not someone who was selfish.

"I - um, well, never met the guy."
Lies. He had met Riku. As both Adrien and Chat. Though, it was briefly in the passing when he was Adrien and when he was Chat, Riku was a rabbit. But being the 'only' LaFayette to bring a good name to the family was a bit strong. Weiss was a good young woman. A little critical and she might have come off a little strong, but she was a good young woman too. She was trying to change things so that she could have some say in the family. Unfortunately, her father was one of the worst people Adrien had ever met.
He almost felt disloyal for not defending Weiss from Shadow's harsh judgment. He wanted to defend her. But if he did, he would give something away. With a police officer, he had to mind his tongue, give half truths and partial lies. Most importantly of all, he had to keep his stories straight with everyone he spoke to. He offered a weak smile.

"Once you get past the emo boy-band look, he's...genuine."
That was the only word Shadow had to describe Riku. It was a word he didn't use often, but it was the truth. He would haev applied it to Chat, too, as the kid told the truth about his robberies' motives since day one, but there was the whole secret identity thing. An issue he still was conflicted about even after admitting what was going to happen if he did find out.
