Surprise attacks had ranged from were assaults to demons surrendering and springing a trap. Sunshine was used to those kinds of maneuvers when chasing a crook. In fact, the closest to criminal chase training she had with Shadow were races, in which he had cooled his regular running speed to match hers. How come tag hadn’t been an option. She was swept high up by arms, spinning her. She laughed, letting the joy come out.

This was probably the happiest day of his life. He kept thinking it but it was true. He set her down and made a faint move to get her before hanging back, a big stupid grin on his face. "Want to keep playing, Mrs. Lafayette?" he asked teasingly. "We can do something else to, like swimming or something. I'm not sure what all there is to do at the beach"

“It’s our day off, Mr. Lafayette,” Sunshine grinned widely. “We can do whatever we want. I suggest getting in the water before it gets cold.” Sure, in Louisiana the humidity made that impossible, but the chill from cold water wasn’t pleasant. “You do know other things to do, right?” Maybe being in a voodoo community has sheltered him from the joy.

"Water it is then" he walked to the water once more and looked back at Sunshine. "How deep do you want to go? I'm fine with whatever" He didn't know how good a swimmer she was. He'd developed a strong swimming ability, just because he had to pick a sport in school and voodoo was not a sport. His parents hadn't been pleased per se, but they agreed swimming was a good skill to have. "Well...my family hardly went to the beach" he said with a sigh. "They were busy making us look good, so my parents hardly had time to let us just relax"

"Wow. And I thought reality shows taking place in island environments were shallow." She was rushing behind him to greet him. Her denim shorts were going to get heavy with seawater, but at least they weren't so big they'd drown her. The reputation of the Lafayette family being all about appearances still disgusted her, and it was nice to hear her fiance felt sick of the selfish preening, too. She adjusted the ring on her finger. God forbid she lose it while they were swimming and then he would have wasted gosh knows how much money on her.

He smiled thinly. "You haven't met my father or uncle. My mom...gave up and went with it after a while" There was a hard edge in his voice. No, he couldn't forgive his father for breaking his mother, in more ways than one. It made him sad to think about it. He took Sunshine's hand. "My family wasn't so high and mighty in the beginning. Seven generations back, we lived in the swamp. I don't want to live in the swamp, but I want to go back to that simplicity. With you, with my sister. I just...want to be someone who doesn't care about blood ties or anything" just worship his spirits in peace and live his life as a cop.

He was right. Seeing them from afar was different than engaging in conversation. he couldn't even remember if any of the Lafayettes ever thanked her and her family. Riku was right; to them, they were just the help. Even the anger, which made her flinch slightly as she had never seen him upset, spelled it out. The only Lafayette who thanked them was Weiss, and well...Sunshine didn't know what was going on inside her head but it wasn't fair to pry. Not even the excuse of being on the police covered that. He took her hand and declared he wanted to return to his roots of simplicity. "Be prepared for a lot of grunt work. Your spirits may help, but I don't think they know how to properly measure flour."

He noticed her flinch and felt bad. She'd never seen him really angry about anything. Even when he was turned into a rabbit he had control over his emotions. But this, this he couldn't help but feel angry over. His family was so high and mighty, and they didn't used to be. Once upon a time a voodoo queen had married a lowly Japanese man and then brought their family to fame by creating the famous Moss Gown, a powerful voodoo artifact that had been given to Camille, the bonafied real Cinderella. Camille's descendants had that dress to this day and Riku was glad of it. It showed his family wasn't always the stuck up assholes they were now. Once, they had given a magic dress to a homeless girl to give her a chance to win the heart of the man she loved. He smiled at his own Cinderella. "I can cook reasonably well, I had to learn to live on my own"

Sunshine giggled. At this point, she had waded to where the water was up to her waist. If the water had been cold, she wasn't getting any sort of feelings from that. She swiped a hair from her eyes and looked at Riku quizzically. "I know that smile, Riku. You're thinking about something other than southern comfort British hybrids."

"Well..." he paused and shrugged. "I was thinking of Moss Gown and how similar you and Camille are. You were both seen as servants, both loved a rich man, and both will get a fairytale wedding. The only difference is you didn't have a magic dress to help you and I didn't give you trinkets so I'd know who you were" he gave a little laugh. "That's how my family became famous, being kind enough to give a girl another chance at being happy" he smiled again. "I'm just thinking about the parallels and how happy I am that you said yes" he couldn't get over that. he was voodoo king fairy godfather and prince all in one.

Sunshine had no clue who Moss Gown was. But from what he was describing, she got a vague idea that it was one of the thousand versions of 'Cinderella' that was about the world. In place of a glass slipper, the prince in this version seemed smarter. Good, because the last thing she needed was to find out he was dumb as a rock, and that was not the case. But then the ball got dropped again. The Lafayettes had gained notoriety for being the family who helped her out. This was not unlike her family, who received power from saving a Seelie. "Geez, next you'll be telling me that your great great great great grandmother was Sleeping Beauty," she joked.

Riku smiled faintly. "Probably not. But maybe there's someone here in town who is related to her, you never know" He walked to where she was, the water a bit lower on him since he was taller. "I think most if not all the stories that are fairytales existed in real life to some extent. The famous story Peer Gynt is supposedly based off a real Peer. I don't know how much of the story is true, but it's certainly entertaining"

Sunshine dragged a hand through the water. The cold saltiness clung to her hand and the vortex that was weak in creation but would have been stronger because of the current, made small motions. Something told her in the back of her mind that she'd be doing something similar when it came time to actually working with voodoo potions. She shook the water off, the tiny droplets catching the light, and giggled, "Yeah and apparently I come from a long line of Rapunzels. Explains the hair." Speaking of hair, standing around hearing exposition was getting boring. She was here to have fun with her fiance, so she took a breath and dove under, the length of yellow almost imitating strands of seaweed.

He laughed. "It does" she dove underwater suddenly. Probably bored of talking, and he dove after her, his hair shimmering in the greenish water like fish scales. He opened his eyes in the water despite the stinging and swam after the gold color shimmering in the shifting light of sun through the water. He reached one hand out and the gold hair slipped through his fingers like water weeds. He broke water for a breath of air and a burst of laughter. The water was cold but not too bad. This was fun!

For a while, the blue green void was all she saw. Would he take the hint and go after her? Well, much to her delight, it did. The green filter made the whole place seem Ethereal. How would it look with her hair glowing? She would have to test it later. He touched some of her hair and she teasingly waved it...only for her foot to get tangled in seaweed to which she burst up for air and let out a disgusted cry that turned into laughter.
“And you said you couldn’t have fun here,” she said as he resurfaced with his own laugh.
“I remember coming here with my small group of friends after school. We weren’t popular kids...Merida was rumored to be a lesbian, Hiccup was only popular for homework help, Jack was laughed at as opposed to with, and well, I sat in the back and drew pictures on my notes. This place...it was where we kind of,..cane together. Traditions never die, I guess.”
Realizing she was rambling, she cleared her throat. “I guess...why me?”
