Omar walked in the light of day down the street, careful to stay with the crowds. Puck had basically said they'd leave him alone for a while, but he couldn't be too sure or careful. Held in his hand was a large wicker basket, covered over with a white cloth with purple flowers stitched on. He didn't mind if it was 'girly' it was a remainder of a daughter that had gotten ill and died some centuries back. So sue him, he was sentimental about his kids. He shuffled into the bakery and waved at anyone and everyone. The heavy basket was a thank you for Sunshine, but if she wasn't there he'd leave it with her family. They could always use the rare Bereckzi Quince fruit from his little trees just outside of town. Yes, he owned an acre of garden land to just putt around in and feel like an old man for a little while. Because he really was old. But he had too many in crop this year to not share so here he was. He hoped Sunshine would appreciate the welcome change from the ever apple and pumpkin that cropped up every October. Plus, this was the best place to find at least a few friends and he could show the friends here he was doing okay.

Another long shift. This time she had to catch up on paperwork. The bane of every cop's existence. She had to file her reports about what happened with the Weiss case and what happened with Thrax and her involvement with Cinder. Which wasn't admittedly much but since she worked the case along the rest of the unit she was required to submit something. As a reward for making it through a grueling week, she decided to go to Nevermore. For a while, she had been feeling good. They solved Weiss' case. Riku's sister was back home (although not safe considering their parents). And then there was the whole Omar thing.
The girl's night had given her the courage to try to go with things, but that was before Omar got snatched away by her own kin. Nothing was much of a confidence sinker like knowing that her species was the reason her kin decided to torture him. Then there were his injuries. She had stolen Sunshine's report (putting it back before anyone knew) and she had seen the extent of the damages. And they didn't even have a lead on how to catch the faeries who had a hand in his torment. She didn't dare try to appeal to the Queen for justice. Her idea of justice might as well as be plucking Aqua's wings from her back and laughing.
Only it didn't seem she could avoid him, seeing as she had walked into Nevermore and there he was. Battered, beaten but still smiling. She didn't know how he could do that. Pretend like everything was okay and he hadn't been through Hell. She felt herself swallowing back emotion. She didn't do that to him, she had to remind herself. Yes, but she was the cause. The dark niggling thought wouldn't leave her alone. She might have been frozen in the doorway had another customer not brushed past her. The door closed before she could make her escape.

The bell ringed to admit a regular customer. regular who had just gotten back from the ten-minute jog which was transferring a prisoner to Angora. A convicted vampire rapist, no less. Putting him behind bars where he would be on death row was a success in Shadow's opinion. But the need for coffee, and checking in on Sunshine after her field trip was kicking in. He could spare a few minutes, knowing Sunshine was on her shift down at Nevermore. The smell of fresh pumpkin bread told him he was jogging in the right direction.
He tuned down the jets in his skates with an inhale, resuming a walking position. The lunch crowd was clearing out so it was still busy, but there were still a small group. He also brushed past another customer,
"Excuse me,"
The person he brushed past was Aqua. She looked petrified, and he followed her gaze. A basket with purple-embroidered flowers was at the table he was passing. The holder of the basket, which he did not expect to see, was Omar.
He looked like he had been through hell and back.

Omar turned when the sound of Shadow came and he smiled at him, and then noticed Aqua. She looked terrified. He looked down at the fading bruises on his arms and bandaged hands and then back up at them. He set the basket down and took a few steps to his friend and Aqua. "You look like you guys just witnessed a car crash" he said lightly, though huskily. "I'm fine, it's okay. I came to say thank you to Sunshine actually. My quince trees bore too much fruit for just me to use, so I brought a few pounds for her" he gave a light hearted smile he hoped was reassuring and looked at the quince basket. "Used to be one of my favorite fruits so, I figured that she'd appreciate the gesture. Maybe she can make some quince jam for people to use on their breads, or bake a few pies. I would totally buy some" he laughed, winced, and stopped. "Aqua...are you going to be okay?" he asked gently.

She started when Shadow came into the shop behind her. Suddenly remembering where she was and forcing back the knee jerk reaction of tears and weeping. She had to swallow a thick lump in her throat, raw and heavy with the sudden guilt and sadness. Words were beyond her. Her mouth opened to say something but not a sound came out. She could feel her hands twitch at her side. She wanted to check his injuries. The same way she had for Terra when he had been hurt on duty. To check over each mark and each bruise and do what she could to help the healing.
She couldn't look him in the eyes. Her hands clenched at her sides. She couldn't control what those other faeries did, but if she had just stayed away from the courts no one would have given a flying fuck who she saw. Her parents had worked so hard to keep her away from the rotten and miserable excuses of kin that she had. With good reason, she now understood completely.
"Am I okay?" she asked. "Look at what they did to you!"

Coming into the open completely beat up from ambush all to give a baker a bag of quince? Certainly a strange gratitude. Then again, Shadow was used to crayon drawings from kids he rescued from burning buildings or baked goods from grateful wives - or husbands - that he thought didn't hold a candle to Nevermore but were good nonetheless. Shadow gave Omar credit, the troll had a massively strong will to come out and try to make light of a heavy issue.
He folded his arms and looked at the troll up and down. Aqua was holding in emotions, and he had mixed thoughts. He got that this was revenge for the whole open confession of a Seelie, heck Jane had called him to try and find him, and the person who came through was Sunshine. Sunshine, who had been spirited away by Dorian and when both of them had come back with a rescued Omar, the broken look in his partner's eyes had shaken him.
"Should I...give you two some privacy?" he pointed between the two of them.

Omar opened his mouth and paused. He shook his head at Shadow's offer. "I'd rather have someone here" he said carefully. Just in case Aqua was just that good of an actress. He knew logically she was just a good person, but the doubt still niggled. He left the quince at the table and walked towards Aqua. "Aqua, please. It's okay. I'm okay. I called Jane and let her know I'd be here, so people know my location now" He rubbed the back of his head. "I wanted to talk to you sooner, actually. About the concert" he put his hands gently on her shoulders. "I really like you. I knew this was probably going to happen and I did it anyway. Because you are worth it" he looked at Shadow. "I didn't expect you guys to help me, what with me being such an ass for so long. So I'm extremely grateful. Thank you"

"I... I wanted to say yes." she told him, "But now..."
The tears spilled down her cheeks before she could stop them, she turned and hastily wiped at her eyes, but despite her attempts to stem the flow, the tears kept coming. His kidnapping had cut her deeply. Almost as deeply as Terra's had. But with Terra, at least his death had been quick and painless. Terra had been dead three years before she even knew. In that way, she felt that Vanitas had some mercy within him. With Omar, she wouldn't have known where to find him. Worse yet, he had suffered for it.
"I didn't even know you were gone!" she protested, her voice soft and agonized. "If Jane hadn't said something..."
She didn't think she was strong enough to go through exactly what had happened to Terra all over again. The parallels were terrifying. Only a few days ago, she had been giggling and blushing over Omar's confession. It had been undeniably romantic. She had spent a night or two sleepless and pondering over her response, but then the Weiss case showed up. Aqua had to put those thoughts on the shelf for Riku's sake. And for the sake of the young girl who had come to her to get reunited with her brother.

Omar wanted him to stay? He understood why he wanted Aqua around, but him? It was..well, he wasn't exactly a moral support kind of person. He stood back and let Aqua do the emotional talking. And emotions she showed with tears streaming down her cheeks. They fell onto the table, and the most Shadow felt he could do for support was collect some napkins and bring them back over to the table so she could dry her eyes.
It almost cut him how he would never get the chance to have this opportunity. To go up to someone and confess that they cared and get the feedback that they felt the same. Almost. He'd have to talk to the Colts about dating advice so he wouldn't turn into a recluse.
Omar then turned and thanked Shadow. The red and black hedgehog shrugged, "Our job is to protect everyone from supernatural threats. If a troll was being bullied by Unseelie, even a troll who is a self-proclaimed ass to our department, then we were going to get you out. Leaving you there wasn't an option."

Omar's face took on a troubled expression and he went to touch Aqua's shoulder, not daring to hug her. She might push him away. "Please still say yes" he said, just as agonized sounding as her. "I couldn't have survived alright if it wasn't for me thinking of you" she had been his salvation, her and Jane and Namine had been the things keeping him going. He shrugged offhandedly. "I disappear for days at a time sometimes. But never more than four days. And I was trying to give you your space, it's not like I really made it easy for anyone to know there was something wrong" He looked at Shadow, visibly shocked. "Most people don't bother with trolls" he admitted finally. "It's hard getting into the mindset people actually care here"

"Thank you." she said as she took the napkins from Shadow.
She dabbed her eyes, doing what she could to ebb the flow. It was embarrassing for her to be so emotional but she had been absolutely broken over what happened. Omar could have died, exactly the same as Terra. That's what scared her the most, the moment she started to have any sort of fond attachment or even romantic inclination towards someone they died. It frightened her to need someone in her life so much because he was almost taken away. She was afraid to say yes. Because who knew what even talking to her right now was going to do later down the line.
"I care," she told him but then hastily amended. "We care."
The BPD was there to protect anyone who needed it. Omar might not have believed it, but he had friends who cared. Shadow was just one example of those friends. But she could admit to the worry that had struck her to the core. Her helplessness when Dorian refused her help for the sake of avoiding a fey war. She hesitated before she wrapped her arms around him, hugging him as if he would vanish if she let go. It was her way of confirming he really was there. Solid. There. Real. Alive.

Shadow's red eyes made an unreadable expression. Aqua's reactions were understandable. Having lost Terra, the difficulty of accepting she had feelings for someone else...only for that someone to nearly die as well...was enough to warrant it. He could also detect fear in the way her voice wavered. Fear of a repeat happening. Fear of not being able to help because of...some fey bullshit he didn't need to get wrapped up in, but poor Sunshine was.
Omar's comment was also one he understood. He had spent ten years living in a fog, never knowing what he was. All he knew was hatred and disdain. A life of insults that had left him literally camping out in a box in Garcon Perdu until fate gave him a chance to fight. But even with a badge he still got hate. Now it wasn't just for what he was, it was because he was working in the law. No matter how many times he tried to bend the rules, it was never enough for the people. A hatred for being known was something he would rather have. Being hated as something unknown, or rarely heard of with his realization of what he really was, was worse.
"Trust is something I don't give that easily," he said, "Some days, I don't even trust myself. It took a blonde who didn't want to die at a bloodsucker's hand that taught me the lives considered the weakest are the ones worth fighting for."

He wrapped his arms around her tightly as soon as she hugged him. "I know you care" he said quietly, "I know you all care. Thank you" He let go of her and nodded in Shadow's direction. "It took being saved by an unseelie to realize I was worth something, even If I was often treated like I wasn't. And it took being tortured the first time to realize these fey were not people I wanted to be like. Er, no offense Aqua. You're about as far from a normal fey as someone could possibly get" he smiled at Shadow. "I thank you for your trust. I hope it won't be misplaced. I want to live up to your trust right now"

"It's okay. I don't want to be like the court faeries either."
She was glad she wasn't like the court faeries. That her parents abandoned that life and kept her from it as long as they had. She wouldn't have liked the person she would have been had they stayed. She wouldn't recognize herself. That's perhaps the worst part. She would have been made to think all of her current friends were inferior and that they were nothing more than scum. Thankfully, she only had a few more weeks left of reporting back to the horrible Queen. Just vague messages about crime (completely omitting what happened to Omar) and that would be that. She could then try to avoid the court with a passion.
"You haven't done anything for us to ever distrust you." she said.
This was the same man who walked Namine home the nights she worked late and later adopted the same young woman. The same guy who after she buried Terra, asked if she needed more time to reschedule a dinner (date?) because of her own heartache. The guy who had been broken up and terrified when Vanitas had kidnapped Namine and Jane. The guy who, despite her arresting him once, was sweet and thoughtful. No. Omar was a good guy. His species had nothing to do with it. And she had no idea how after he was hurt not once but twice by the same species he could even consider looking at her the way he did. If anyone should be asking for his trust, it should have been her.

Shadow nodded in agreement with Aqua. Even when there had been a confusion arrest, Omar had done everything a true citizen would do. He told the truth, and for Shadow, that was the biggest difference between Omar and other trolls.
