Weiss wasn't sure if anyone had threatened the paparazzi, or if they were just being nice for once. But either way, they hadn't bothered her since her move to Riku's place. And she appreciated it. If any of them tried to bother her, Riku would probably hex them into next week. Or she might explode. Things were kept quiet and delicate around her. Her days moved slow, but she'd chosen to move at that pace right now. She just needed time to figure things out, get the right mind set for this new chapter in her life. Just because the literal demons in her life were gone didn't mean the metaphorical ones weren't, and they were tough to deal with. Weiss still felt like she could see her shadow spirits out of the corner in her eye, or hear them whispering in her head. A lot of magic was being done to help her move on, as well as therapy. But, on some days, she just had to feel better the old fashion way: going outside and getting some fresh air. Which was why she was seated in Raoul Park, really trying to focus on the soft breeze and the sun on her face. Anyone there didn't say anything to her, although she could feel some curious glances. That was to be expected. Yang had said the same thing had happened to her after she'd lost her arm. And if Yang could deal with that, Weiss felt like she could too.

Finally, it was sweater weather. Sunshine liked the fall for many reasons, and one of them was bundling herself up. Riku had insisted on buying her the pink and white bomber jacket she was wearing as she kicked leaves while walking down the path. The one thing she despised about fall had been the over abundance of pumpkin flavored everything. Now that November was around, it was time to make way for holiday flavors. Sunshine was sipping her favorite of the lineup, the butterscotch latte. She looked at the ring, unable to believe that this was all happening. Then speak of the devil, a flash of white hair caught her eye. It was Weiss Lafayette. Sunshine hadn't really talked to her since the first time, nor really since the whole shadow spirit thing. But, if they were going to be sisters-in-law, maybe getting off to a good foot would be a start. She waved in Weiss' direction with a friendly smile.

It took a moment for Weiss to notice that one person passing by wasn't just staring at her curiously, but was actually giving a friendly smile and waving. Despite meeting her only once, Weiss knew who it was: Sunshine, her brother's fiancee. Really, she was still kind of surprised that Riku had fallen head-over-heels enough to settle down with someone. She knew how closed off he could be. But, it looked like Sunshine had drawn him out of his shell. Riku had mentioned more than once how nice she was, and Weiss remembered her friendly demeanor the one time they'd met, even though she'd probably been a bitch at the time. Then again, she'd acted that way with a lot of people. It made her feel guilty, although Riku and her Aunt Sarah always assured her that that had just been the shadow spirits manipulating her. Regardless, she gave a wave and a little smile in return. "Hey Sunshine," she greeted.

Without the shadow spirits, Weiss' demeanor was much different. She didn't seem as closed off or stuffy. Truth be told, she was kind of pleasant. Riku had apologized on his sister's behalf for the first time they spoke, but Sunshine had reassured him that the girl didn't mean anything. Well, the cat was out of the bag, but she wasn't here to talk about gloom and doom topics. Now was the real chance to meet Weiss without demonic interference."How's it going, Weiss? Enjoying the rare non-humid day we have?"

"Yeah. People always say fresh air can cure a lot of things," Weiss said. "Figured I might as well suck some in." She knew Riku and Sarah would be paranoid anytime she went out on her own, and who could blame her? Something unexpected might happen. But, they knew that she needed space every so often, and they tried to give her it as much as possible. Sometimes, she just needed to be alone with her thoughts for a little while, take a mental breather from things like organizing her new room or Aunt Sarah delving into some healing voodoo magic to make sure any darkness left in her was under control. She noticed the engagement ring on Sunshine's finger, glittering like a star. "Looks my brother went all out on that," she said, pointing to it.

“Thank you. You know, it’s refreshing that he didn’t spend so much on diamonds or stupid embellishments. He knew my tastes without even dropping hints he was getting it.” She admired the ring. The simple purple stone sparkled. Even sweeter had been his knowledge of the Seddon family and its use of sun motifs. The sun was clear as day. In a strange way, it was like a dawn of a new life for both of them.

Weiss gave a little laugh. "Yeah, he's observant like that." Riku could be quiet sometimes and keep to himself, but that didn't mean he was ignorant of what was happening around him. She hesitated for a moment before speaking again. "Look, if I was bitchy in any way, whenever we met last...I'm sorry." Even before the shadow spirits had come around, being with her parents and feeling like Riku had abandoned her could make her act like a jerk towards people. Heck, she could even understand why Sunshine hadn't mentioned she was a cop when they had first met. Weiss hated the police for a while, feeling like they had taken Riku away from her. She probably would have lashed out at Sunshine if she had known.

Sunshine joined in with small laugh. The difference between Weiss talking to her now versus their first talk was so much more different. Weiss had been picking out kind things because of the shadow spirits. Now, the warmth was coming off naturally, meaning Sunshine could actually start being herself and not hold anything back. The cats were out of both of their bags, and from this, maybe they could find a better connection. Weiss apologized for her actions and Sunshine took a sip of latte, mulling how to answer this. Riku had told her everything about their shitty home life, and giving sympathy back would just make her seem shallow. "The past's in the past," she finally said with a small smile. "so apology accepted. At least now we can talk without any, um, interruptions."

Weiss gave a sigh of relief. Part of her had been afraid that Sunshine might be peeved at her for a while for how she'd acted. She'd grown up with people who didn't take slights against them lightly. But, Sunshine forgave her with hardly a thought. It was a new feeling, being forgiven so easily, and without being punished first. That was how her parents treated her, whenever she made a mistake. But not everyone was like her parents, and Sunshine especially wasn't so. Weiss could see why her brother fell for her. She was easy-going, and had an infectious cheerfulness. She seemed to make Weiss smile almost effortlessly. "Yeah, no interruptions," she agreed.

"So..." Sunshine played with a curled up leaf that had fallen nearly. The tips had gotten tight, like a burrito without any filling. The yellow-brown of the leaf crunched beneath her fingers. Outside of them having a distaste for mainstream young adult novels, she realized that she and Weiss didn't have much of a common ground. There was Riku, but she didn't want to be the girl who only talked about her fiance, especially not to his sister who had been his closest friend since day 1. "I heard you moved in with Riku. Did everything get out well?"

Weiss nodded. "Yeah. Couldn't take everything. It wouldn't have fit. I didn't need a whole lot of stuff though. A lot of it was just...trying to show off for the family." Being a LaFayette meant getting first dibs on everything, and Weiss's room had had a lot of stuff her parents had thrown on her to make sure that the whole family had the latest TV's, clothes, makeup, etc. At least now, she wouldn't have to worry about that anymore. "I've been learning how to do stuff on my own, since I don't have a full staff of servants anymore," she continued. "It's kind of cool, but...complicated too. I mean, I never knew making meals from scratch was so hard." She usually had to get Riku to help her. The first time she tried to saute some chicken on her own, the outside had turned black while the inside was still raw, thanks to her cranking up the heat as high as it would go. And she'd had no idea about putting vegetable oil in the pan first so the chicken didn't get stuck. She'd thought Riku would be mad, but apparently, he'd done something similar when moving out on his own for the first time. Not everyone started off as a five-star chef, and he and Weiss were no exceptions. They'd spent the night laughing about it and ordering some pizza instead.

"I'm your go-to person when it comes to cooking and baking. These," she flexed her arm and patted her bicep. It wasn't bodybuilder big, but a noticeable muscle was forming. Exercise in training for the police academy helped build up some strength, too, "came from learning how to knead bread. Sort of therapeutic. Sometimes when I get off of a case, I go into the kitchen of my loft or Nevermore and just knead." When she had started out at the police academy, she had literally made five loaves for Dutch bread. All because the yeast and blobs kept rising. "One time, I got so nervous with my baking I put sugar instead of salt into a loaf," she made a childish face. "My stepdad was nice about it, but oh my gosh, it was mortifying!" she laughed, remembering how John made a forced smile before spitting the loaf out.

Sunshine instantly got excited when the topic switched to cooking. Sure, Weiss knew that was her other job besides being a cop, but she seemed really passionate about it. And it apparently had some therapeutic benefits as well. Pounding out some bread dough might help Weiss feel better if she was having a bad day and needed to get her frustrations out in a healthy way. "You think you could teach me how to do that?" she asked, looking up at her. Weiss wasn't about to be a baker for a living, but learning how to make food yourself was a life skill she needed to learn, and Sunshine seemed like a good teacher for it. Not to mention, she'd get to know her better. Riku had talked about her a lot, but Weiss felt like there was a difference between hearing him talk about her and seeing her face-to-face.

“Absolutely,” Sunshine answered. An eagerness to learn a new task, no matter how daunting, reminder her of when Riku was under her wing. He had been asking so many questions, questions she knew his higher up parents would never answer or offer. Weiss must have gotten that from him, from all their voodoo regimes or trying to get away from hands that smacked them for getting an herb wrong in a Gris Gris. Just thinking of it made her blood boil.

Sunshine's response was warm and enthusiastic. It made Weiss smile. "Great. Looks like I'll be a professional in no time if you're helping me out," she joked. Maybe learning how to make something sweet like the stuff at the Nevermore Bakery would be cool. Granted, Weiss usually got coffee there more than anything else, but she always enjoyed the muffins and scones there. "Is it weird, being excited about little stuff like this?" she asked. Doing your own laundry, cooking your own meals, it was something any ordinary person could do. But for Weiss, it was entirely new, and while her voodoo studies were halted right now, she still had her desire to learn. That much about her hadn't changed.
