Sunshine was relieved at Weiss’ smile. Apparently getting out of the Lafayette Manor was making her all the more better. Who woukdn’t be happy living with the very person who fought so hard to get her out? Who had gone through so much darkness to make sure she would be okay. Weiss asked if excitement over independence, and she nodded. “When I moved out of my parents’ place, it was super exciting. Sure, some things sucked, but for the most part, it was a big step.”

That made Weiss feel a little better. So, she wasn't acting weird. Then again, was anybody in this city really normal? It had fairies, gargoyles, humans, and many more living side by side, each person with their own little quirks and traits. And that didn't even cover all the combinations of creatures that lived here. Half-breeds could be a messy business, with no way of knowing how two creatures genetics would mix. It made Weiss think of Dorian, and his interest in that subject. To be honest, it'd been a while since she'd even thought of the guy, as well as Anna. Last she'd seen them, they'd been working together on Anna's experiment, thinking they might be able to create a medicine that could temporarily give humans an Others' powers. Weiss hadn't seen them since, although she'd heard about the fiasco that had terminated the experiment completely. She hadn't spoken to anyone about it, mainly because she felt guilty about not telling anyone what Anna had been doing. She knew that it was dangerous, but she felt it would have been hypocritical of her to criticize her friend for what she was doing, when Weiss had been doing some dangerous things herself. "So, um, how's everyone else in the Others Unit doing?" she asked, failing in her attempt at sounding casual. "I ran into Anna and Dorian ages ago, but I haven't seen them in a long time. Are they doing okay?"

“After the whole ‘reverse Sapien’ experiment fiasco, things got quiet with them....I got caught in the middle of it...” Her hands shook just remembering all of it. How she had gone in and witnessed the experiment warp Anna into something inhuman. How Dorian and her both paid physical injuries - his worse than hers - in making sure the other was safe. Then how Dorian gave her the gift of harnessing moonlight...it had been so much. She sipped her latte, the butterscotch taste easing the nerves. “Anna’s better, Dorian’s too. Aqua’s got an admirer, Jim and Dimitri are the same old tight knit duo. Yang is kicking butt like I knew she would. Shadow, my partner, has been up and down,” she sighed, “truth is, I’m kind of worried.”

"I'm sorry. I...didn't know." All Weiss had heard was that an officer had gotten caught in the crossfire, sort of. She hadn't known it was Sunshine. She wasn't sure if she wanted to know the details, or if Sunshine even wanted to tell them. Her hands shook slightly just barely mentioning it. Weiss could understand that though. And Sunshine's worries didn't seem to just be about Anna and Dorian. They were about Shadow too, which took Weiss a moment to remember. "He's the hedgehog-looking guy, right?" she asked. She hadn't spent too much time with him personally. She'd only been told that he could be closed off, but was a good cop, especially when he and Sunshine were teamed up.

Sunshine smiled wistfully. She had been through heck and back regarding it. Anna had felt so guilty for what she did, and the cop realized while being stuck in treatment it had been stupid on her own part. Dorian had confided that she had ended up saving him, but it sure didn’t feel heroic. Not a lot of things cops did were. Weiss confirmed her partner’s appearance, and she nodded. “Once you get past the literal and figurative prickles, he’s actually not a bad person.”

"Sounds like an interesting guy," Weiss said. She wondered how someone like Shadow had ended up on the Others Unit. Maybe because he automatically looked like one of the "Bad Cops"? She'd have to ask that another time, as well as how he'd ended up being partnered with Sunshine. The two seemed like they wouldn't get along well at all, what with practically being polar opposites. Yet, they somehow did. "Have you and Riku made any...official wedding plans yet?" she asked. So far, all she knew was that the two were getting married. She didn't know when, or where, or if any specifics had been talked about yet. Granted, they had plenty of time to figure that out, but Weiss wasn't sure how far along they were with wedding stuff yet.

Well, back to the girlie topic. Sunshine guess it was only fair, and the truth was she and Riku had talked a minimum about the wedding and what they wanted to do. They decided no grandoise affairs that would cost 20,000 or however much crazy venues were. Even tehn, the fancy venues seemed more appropriate for vampire weddings, not the simple nature-based voodoo ceremony they had agreed on. "We've really only decided on a couple of things. We were thinking having a natural venue...making gris gris at the ceremony...keep the voodoo traditions as the base, you know."

It was as Weiss figured. Only a few things had been planned so far. But Sunshine and Riku had plenty of time. Why rush things? You really only got one shot at a wedding to make it perfect. It had to be planned carefully. But, Weiss had a feeling that it would be different from other weddings she'd been to in the past. "At least it won't be one of those grand affairs where practically every important person ever is invited," she said. "I've had enough of those." Any weddings she'd gone to had been within her parents' social circle, and those tended to have a lot of pomp and circumstance. Heck, it was almost ridiculous. Luckily, Sunshine and Riku seemed to be staying away from that sort of thing, which Weiss appreciated.

Sunshine made a face. Not just for empathy in Weiss being involved in so many of those affairs, but because her opinion of being sidesaddled in them would have driven her insane. "If I had to look at china patterns that were almost exactly the same for three whole days, I'd scream. Either that or I'd use some more...colorful language that'd make the planners blush." Her time with Shadow had made her bolder. She had started out so timid, too afraid to even shoot a gun. But with each monster death and arrest of a crazy criminal, it had gotten her out of her shell.

Weiss gave a laugh. "Now that'd be something I'd like to see," she said. It almost reminded her of how her Aunt Sarah could act sometimes. She was as sweet as pie most of the time, but when she flew off the handle, she really flew off. Just mentioning Weiss's parents these days could send her into an hour-long rant about how despicable they were and how they should never be allowed to raise kids ever again. Weiss always found that amusing. Heck, Elsa was like that too when it came to her parents. Weiss had a feeling that maybe she was acting out of a sense of guilt, even though none of this was her fault, but regardless of the reason, she was taking Weiss's parents head-on in the legal sense. People were always talking about it, like it was a TV show drama. Weiss wasn't sure how to feel about that, or even how Elsa felt about it. They'd only talked briefly since she'd woken up in the hospital.

Well, at least Weiss laugh sounded natural and not as wooden. Sunshine felt herself laughing, too. The china would have probably been shattered like a jigsaw puzzle made from ceramic if she had stared long enough. Besides, she still had the heirlooms from Nana Minerva, the Seddon before Wendy and had come to America from England to escape Other haters to protect her daughter. Funny how the family circle came about that way. "I've actually never done any voodoo rituals, to be honest. Riku tells me that I'm going to have to learn if I....you know.." she frowned. The touchy subject of Jacques and Ciri was never fun to think about. Heck, she had only ever seen the family at a distance and had given a disapproving frown at the treatment of the kids.

Weiss looked up. Sunshine looked wary, and for good reason. Voodoo was a touchy subject for Weiss right now. She hadn't done much of it since she'd gone to live with Riku. The only exception was when her Aunt Sarah was teaching her techniques that were more on the lighter side, to balance out the darkness in her. It didn't make it disappear, but it certainly helped it feel farther away. But she hadn't tackled it with the same zeal that she used to. She felt like getting wrapped up in it again would bring out her old vices, at least for right now. Maybe in the future, she could think about getting back into it fully. She felt like she couldn't abandon it altogether. It was a part of who she was. She ran a hand through her hair, trying to appear casual. "The basic stuff isn't too hard," she said. "A simple potion, a charm to help boost a friend's confidence, that's usually the first stuff you learn. Once things start getting more powerful though, that's where it gets complicated."

“Okay, good.” The concern and anxiety fell from Sunshine’s face. Weiss was the perfect person to talk to about it. Riku had dropped the hints and had shown his parlor tricks with dolls. He had surprised her with a doll bringing her a coffee from the kiosk...her favorite blend, too. Little things like that made her happy. Potions and charms were doable. That and with the Lafayette siblings both watching, it would probably be less intimidating.

Sunshine seemed more relieved after Weiss's reassurances. It was an odd feeling. She was still used to most people getting mad when she talked, or worried. Granted, "worried" was still an emotion a lot of people felt when spending time with her, but at least it was balanced out with kindness and caring. Her parents usually didn't care about what she had to say, or they got upset when she said something they didn't like. Knowing that she actually made someone feel better just by saying something, it was a thing most people took for granted, but she actually felt some pride in it. "It's weird. Having civil conversations with people is almost...a new experience," she said. "Either I was flipping out, or people like my parents shut me down. Having someone actually listen is...refreshing."

“Civil on your terms, too.” She didn’t want to assume, but probably most of Weiss’ conversations had been controlled by her parents. Some topics she couldn’t even touch or were forbidden to speak out. Had the shadows done the same thing? Nah. Best not to ask. She wiggled her lavender high tops, the two white toe sections meeting. It was weird for her, too. She was talking with a girl about girlie things. Aqua and Yang were her friends and they had talked about boys, but it had been to break up a tense investigation. Back when she and Merida were friends, all the redhead wanted to talk about had been survival in the bayou. Sunshine found this talk with Weiss...nice.
