Weiss gave a little laugh. "Yeah," she agreed. She could actually have a say in things now, and have a different opinion from those around her. She'd spent so many years just going along with what her parents wanted, until she barely had any thoughts of her own. This sensation of being independent was sort of nerve-wracking, but also exciting. She felt like being alone and wanting to be on her own were very different things. With the former, she felt isolated and lonely. With the latter, she could go about her day as she wanted, and ask for help if she needed it. "You know, when I was little, I always used to wonder what it would be like to have a sister," she said. "Looks like having a sister-in-law is the closest I can get to that. And...I'm glad it's you. Honestly." She hoped Sunshine could understand that she was speaking from the heart. Riku chose to marry someone that was kind and positive and had a way of making everyone around her feel happy. Weiss felt like he had chosen well, and she totally approved of them getting together. She felt like Sunshine could maybe fill the void that her parents had left her, and give her the warmth that she'd desperately needed these last few years.

Sunshine felt her face heat up. Weiss had never given her a compliment the first time they talked, or even in any mother encounters. Well, she complimented her family's cooking and pastries, but that was different. It was also incredibly relieving to hear at least one Lafayette approved of her relationship with Riku. Better yet, it the one member of the family she wanted to get the biggest yes from. With Weiss having been his support for so many years, Sunshine didn't want Weiss to think she was butting in on shared time. But no, it seemed like Weiss was already accepting her as a sister in law. "Thanks, Weiss. That...that really means a lot." She gave a half-hearted laugh, "I've had a stepbrother ever since I was eight. I mean I love Thomas, but it's not the same as having someone be with you through thick and thin."

"Yeah, well, if I've learned anything, it's that your family doesn't have to be just the people you're related to, you know?" Weiss said. "They can be anybody." She'd been trying to please her parents for so long, but there was no point in pouring all her effort and devotion to a pair of people that couldn't care less about her. She had to focus on the people who did care about her, and that included friends like Adrien and Elsa, and family like Riku and Aunt Sarah. And now, Sunshine would be a part of that family too. "What's your family like?" she asked. "Riku's mentioned them a little bit and said they were nice and stuff." She figured they had to be, considering that Sunshine was nice and kind herself. But since it looked like the Seddons were becoming joined with the LaFayettes, Weiss figured she might as well try to get to know Sunshine's family.

Sunshine giggled. "Ain't that the truth. Some of my closest friends ahve become like family. Yang and I could have been twin sisters separated at birth...uh...at least you can tell us apart? I'm not just talking about the arm." Yang had been the more enthusiastic and tougher of the duo. It took a lot to get Sunshine pissed off, as opposed to Yang who got mad when just a touch happened. Weiss asked about her family, and she looked upward. "Hmm...well...my mom's always trying to find the light in the worst scenarios, even when you don't realize you need it. She also doesn't take no when she sees you need help. John's the adventurous type. He's always making sure Thomas and I aren't always cooped indoors."

Weiss laughed. "Yeah, you guys are a bit different," she agreed. Yang was brave almost to the point of recklessness. Who else would take on Thrax single-handedly like she had? Sunshine seemed a bit more mellow than that. Still, she could see how the two of them became friends. Both of them were definitely more optimistic about things, and had an easier time making friends. Weiss had already seen how Yang had a way of making those around her smile, just like Sunshine could. And it seemed her mom was much the same, when Sunshine described her. And John was the more outdoors-y type. Weiss wondered if getting to know him would involve lots of camping trips or bonfires. "John...he's your step-dad, right?" she asked. She remembered Riku saying as much. If he knew what happened to Sunshine's actual father, he hadn't said, and Weiss hadn't asked. If it was a touchy subject, she hadn't wanted to bring it up.

“Yeah. But having known him since I was eight, the ‘step’ part sort of went away.” She had John as a stepfather for as long as she could actually remember. She had only learned about Joaquin, her biological father, by mistake. Wendy and John had broken the news to her when she asked. But after hearing the news, she had accepted that John was ‘Dad’. He had been the guy who picked her up from school, who helped her with homework when Mom was busy at the bakery.

Weiss nodded in understanding. At least Sunshine had parents who loved her and didn't try to control every aspect of her life. She'd had it lucky in that retrospect. At least Weiss still had Riku, and all her aunts and cousins who felt that Jacques and Ciri were finally getting their just desserts. Not every LaFayette in the world was a jerk, and it was high time Weiss got to know them better. "Hopefully, some of the nice members of my family show up," she said. "Aunt Sarah's been hanging around for a while, helping Riku make sure I get back on my feet and stuff. She's nice, although if you mention my parents, she'll go on an hour-long rant about how sucky they are." Weiss had to admire that her Aunt Sarah told her parents exactly what she thought of them. Not everyone was so blunt with her mom and dad, and it was kind of refreshing.

"Oooh, first time I've ever heard of Aunt Sarah. And from what you're telling me, I like her already. Reminds me of Elsa." There were no relatives on Sunshine's side of the family. There was Grandpa John Seddon, who had pretty much been adamant about not paying for a big wedding. Lucky for him, Sunshine had told him there would be no worries on being spendy. It would be a very LaFayette...the non snobby Lafayette kind...registered affair. But at least she had sent out a few save the dates to some of her friends. She even had asked Yang to be her maid of honor, though a small register of guilt came through about not asking Weiss to be in that role.

Weiss gave a little laugh. "Yeah, once they get mad, there's no stopping them. For a while, at least." It took a little more for Elsa to lose her temper than Aunt Sarah. But, Weiss being treated so horribly by her parents had both set them off. Sarah was determined to make sure they didn't come near Weiss right now, and Elsa wanted to make sure that they atoned for every crime they committed. "Mom and Dad kind of shut her out. Her and other family members that aren't as stuck up as they are. So, I never saw her that much when I was younger. Now that I'm away from them though, I finally get to spend time with this...whole other side of the family that hasn't sold their souls to money." Granted, most LaFayettes still had fat wallets, but there was a difference between having a lot of cash and constantly striving to get more. Her parents were the latter. Elsa and Adrien were prime examples of the former. Sure, they were wealthy, but getting more money wasn't a prime motivator for them. It was why Weiss had become friends with them in the first place.

Sunshine smiled, and although she didn't laugh, a glint in her green eyes showed that she had the same schadenfreude as Weiss on the whole issue involving Elsa and a pissed off aunt ratting on the seemingly untouchable family (wow, that sentence had like three Germanic words lol). They were going to get their just desserts, and not the kind that they cruelly snubbed at the party. "You know what they say, the more the merrier," she swallowed, realizing that these relatives would also be her in-laws. She hadn't met them, but would they like her? Some girl with the blessings of both sides of the Fae court, usually known just for being Rapunzel with a gun?

"Yeah, it feels good, knowing that I'm...not alone in all this stuff," Weiss said. She'd been afraid that Riku and her friends would have to fight the battle themselves, but she had a good number of other relatives that were willing to help. Some had actual legal advice they could lend. Others just wanted to send Ciri and Jacques hate mail or be there for Weiss when she needed it. Having this many people care about her, it was almost overwhelming. It was almost hard to believe that the shadow spirits had practically cut her off from everyone and made her believe that not one of them cared about her. But, they'd been skilled manipulators, and slowly wearing Weiss down until she believed anything they said was a specialty of theirs.

“When I joined the force, I felt the same way. It was sort of overwhelming, being around everyone who knew all this supernatural crime and how to stop it.” She had been someone who had gotten lucky to escape vampires. Had Shadow not been liocked up with her, she would have been eaten alive. Would her sun hair had helped? Probably. But even then, she had been self conscious about them. It had been Shadow that got her confidence boosted.

"Seems like you guys are one big family, honestly," Weiss said. A lot of the officers seemed pretty close with each other. Maybe Riku had found some comfort in that, after being shunned by his actual family. Weiss still felt bad about how she'd acted, and she wasn't sure if she could ever make up for it. Riku had said a million times that he forgave her, but anytime she remembered how she'd treated him, she'd feel a surge of guilt. She wasn't sure if that would go away with time or not. She'd have to wait and see.

Sunshine smiled. In a way, all of them were family. Jim and Dimitri were brothers by blood, but the extended arm to her and the other cops had brought them together. They shared meals...if you counted takeout and bags of chips...while sharing ideas about crimes. It was like playing a more realistic version of the game Clue...just without the dice and actual lives were being played for and the candlestick was replaced with an enchanted dagger.

Weiss smiled back, until her phone buzzed with a text notification. She glanced at it before turning back to Sunshine. "I should get going. I've got some...light voodoo magic stuff to do." Granted, her Aunt Sarah did more of the magic than she did, but light was the best way to counter darkness after all. Aunt Sarah knew a lot about the healing aspect of voodoo, and her talents were a real benefit to someone who's mind had been tainted by darkness like Weiss's had. "I'll see you around," she promised. She and Sunshine may have gotten off to an awkward start, but at least they were getting closer now. And Weiss liked the idea of having a sister, even if it was technically a sister-in-law.
