Aqua sighed to herself. She was on hold at the cafe now. The former witness had been less than compliant but said that Omar threw the first punch. Aqua quietly waited, trying to be civil about this. The only reason Nevermore staff was even trying to get Omar's band to talk to her was because Sunshine's family owned the place. As she waited, she tapped her pencil along to the on hold music. Her gaze drifted to the window. It was already so late. She hoped it wouldn't be dawn by the time this was sorted out.
Namine had been delivering her sketches to Aqua's desk in regards to the recent child victims. She had redrawn the children so they no longer bore the injuries their bodies had sustained in death so the families could identify them. A startled gasp left her lips and she quickly cast a glance to Aqua. The blue haired officer hadn't heard her. Tentatively Namine stepped over to the holding cells. Her heart sank. It was the man who walked her home.
"Omar," she breathed.
Vanitas fought to reign in his annoyance at no response from Pitch. He was good at getting responses over the things he said. The Halfling and the Troll were good examples of that. He got his fight out of both of them, even if one had a party chicken out and the other was interrupted before the fun started, he got what he wanted in the end. Vanitas just couldn't catch a break. Not getting a rise out of Officer Black didn't annoy him. No! Not one bit. He grit his teeth before smiling again.
"I can talk. That's fine!" He said. "So the Faery? You partnering up for good? I'd watch out for her if I were you. She has a thing for men in power and bad things tend to happen to her partners. I'd say go talk to her last partner but left, didn't he? Maybe the nightlife was too much for them, if you know what I mean."

Omar waited patiently in his cell, considering his options as he sat there. He was probably going to get this on his permanent record. Funny how it was only in the past ten years he had actually become someone who caused bar fights and other issues for the cops. Ten years ago he had been the type of troll who kept his head down and stayed out of trouble as much as was possible for a troll. He looked at the concrete between his shoes and hummed as he waited for the verdict on what was going to happen to him. He hoped it wouldn't take all night. And then he heard someone familiar and his head shot up, wide eyed. "Namine?!"

Ah, there it is.
Although Pitch had appeared to be doing nothing but sitting perfectly still, his powers had been busy at work seeping into Vanitas and seeking out his fear. And he had quickly found it amongst the dark thoughts of his fellow demon.
Although the ability was not outwardly impressive, his power over sensing fear was beyond anything that anyone in the BPD knew of. Not only was it effective against humans and many Others, it also worked on demons. This fact alone truly displayed how strong Pitch's affinity for fear was and how easily he could even effect his own kind.
Rumor had it that this power over fear was the reason he had come to rise so quickly and hold onto his position as a member of the Loa of Bellrouge.
Of course, those were just unconfirmed rumors.....
Vanitas suddenly began to speak, breaking the silence that Pitch had produced as if it annoyed him. Again, Pitch did nothing but turn his eyes slightly away from Vanitas as if he wasn't really interesting enough to keep his attention.

Aqua sighed. They sure were taking their time deciding. This was their boss! Their co-worker! Their friend! In jail because he clashed with a demons. If it had been one of her friends... Actually, now that she thought of it, her ex-partner and ex-boyfriend had scared off most of her old friends. Aqua only had the department - her job. But even then, at the end of the day, she didn't go home for drinks with these people. She kept them at arms length. Unable to go on her internal conflict, she heard the line click as someone picked up.
"Ah, yes! Officer Malone here, please, all I need to know is what happened at the bar tonight." Aqua said.
"W-Why are you-?" Namine stopped short.
She wasn't supposed to talk to suspects. It was against protocol. Not to mention if they confessed anything to her, evidence was then inadmissible at court because Namine wasn't an officer. They could get off on charges. She didn't want to see Omar go to jail. He seemed nice. Namine stopped just short of the bars. Her hands clasped together and began to twist rather worryingly. Her gaze went to the floor. She looked like she was the one being scolded for bad behavior.
Vanitas twitched. Still nothing. Not a single response from Black about his partner of the night, granted, Vanitas realized he should have expected this. It wasn't like a demon to come to the rise of some person. Nevertheless, his hands clenched underneath the desk. Something else, he had to think of something else to get at him. This wolf in sheep's clothing was going to show his true colors, Vanitas wanted him to! Black was going to show the others in the BPD he was no better than any street demon.
"Unless you're into that sort of thing? Are you going to break her in for her new partner?" Vanitas mocked. "Standard procedure for people like us, right?"

Omar bit his lip and looked away from Namine, shrugging as he did so. "Got in a bar fight" he muttered and sighed. "Might have to put those plans to make an album cover on hold" he told her gloomily. Things were not looking up at all. He hesitated for all of three seconds before touching her shoulder through the bars. "Thanks. For caring" he told her seriously. He meant it too, he was really glad somebody, even a near stranger, cared about him at all. He somehow doubted that his band did all that much.

Pitch finally broke from his statue-like state to offer a single response to Vanitas's words and actions. He yawned.
His hand covered his mouth as he let the yawn last for a few moments before returning to his previous posture, nothing having changed outwardly for the demon.
However, mentally he knew exactly what he was doing and how it would drive Vanitas insane. He hadn't missed the tension in his fellow demon's posture or the way he seemed to be struggling more and more to fill the silence that he himself refused to break.
He knew how effective this was because he had seen it in Vanitas mind, in his fears. The demon might first appear to have no fears but Pitch knew better. Everything, every single living thing that possessed some form of thought, knew fear. And demons were no exception to the rule. Even he, Pitch, the Master of Fear, had his own, although it had been so long since he had turned so deeply inward that he could understand what that fear even was.

Aqua sighed after she got off the phone with Omar's band. They had been less than willing to cooperate, but had insisted (if only to get her off their backs) that Vanitas had started the fight. While he may not have thrown the first punch, he had mocked the band and then the singer's family, which according to Omar’s bandmates, was an absolute no-go conversation for the troll. She was about to pick up the phone to call the bartender when a man in a suit stepped through the doors of the office. Her eyes widened. Pressed suit, brief case, too smug of a look on his face. She sharply turned her head towards the room where Vanitas and Pitch were talking. She hadn’t given either Vanitas or Omar a phone call but somehow word had gotten out about their arrest? It had only been a few hours! And yet, here a lawyer was, magically appearing as if summoned.
Namine jumped a little when he touched her shoulder. Her eyes flickered down to his arm. A flicker of a familiar fear trickling through her being as she did so, but it stopped short when she saw the bandages that laced up and down his forearms. She could tell by the wrap job that Aqua had tended to these injuries, as Namine had been on the receiving end of them not so long ago.
"You're hurt!" Namine gasped.
Vanitas nearly screamed in rage. Again there was no response. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and ran a hand through his hair. So Vanitas couldn’t get by on insulting this demon’s supposedly reformed morals. Still… the yawn had frustrated Vanitas to the core. It made him want to bash the officer’s head against the table, but he was still lucid enough despite his growing anger to know that would only get him arrested for real. This interview was just a formality.
"You're an awful excuse for a cop," Vanitas sighed. "You know that, right?"

Omar looked down at his arms and removed his hand from her shoulder rather hastily. She had flinched too so obviously she didn't like people touching her. He shouldn't have been so presumptuous. "Oh, yea. I got hurt in a barfight with a demon. He's in the room next door..." Omar looked past her and saw the guy standing by the door. How the hell had he appeared? was he a demon too? from his dress he looked like a lawyer. That'd be fitting actually. a demonic lawyer. Omar looked back at Namine, knowing the lawyer wasn't for him and feeling a sense of defeat. He was in big trouble if Vanitas had a lawyer. "I'm in big trouble Namine" he sighed.

Pitch finally turned his gaze back to Vanitas, but the look was one that didn't care in the slightest that the demon was even present, let alone his words. And as he looked at him across the table, Pitch smiled. It was the kind of smile a person might give looking down at a worm, the kind of smile that seemed to scream aloud how Pitch thought Vanitas was a worm himself, perhaps less, something to just ignore and overlook because it really mattered little to nothing in the end.
The smile seemed so natural but inside Pitch only had one thing on his mind. Now that he had tasted Vanitas fear, he could mold it and shape it and, if he were careful enough and given enough time, could even lead his fellow demon into confessing on one of his more recent crimes. The fight with Omar would never stick, that much he knew, but if he were pushed into blabbing on a crime that hadn't overrun its time limit....

"Miss Malone?" the man asked. "I'm here for my client. Vanitas. He'll be leaving with me."
"You can't do that! He's -"
The lawyer thrust a bundle of papers into Aqua's chest. She slowly reached down to take them and glance them over. As the disbelief made itself known on her face, the lawyer smirked. Papers from someone in city hall, excusing Vanitas for what he's done because he had helped in a past investigation with drug dealers. Immunity? This demon had immunity from minor crimes because of his involvement with cases as an information broker. City hall would rather to keep him on the streets than lose what information he could give. There was so much he could get away with... It made Aqua's head spin and she felt rather ill.
"You'll find that I can." he said.
Namine glanced over her shoulder to see Aqua with the lawyer. The blue faery looked rather upset. The little blonde shifted a little in her spot. She wanted to help Omar, but she didn't know how. She wrung her hands in front of her chest, feeling rather helpless in the wake of the situation.
"W-What can I do?" Namine asked him softly.
Vanitas glowered at Pitch. That infuriating smile Pitch gave him made his skin crawl. His hands ached with the desire to beat the smile off the officer. The idea was starting to look more and more appealing as time passed. He took another shaky breath, trying to reign in his growing anger.
"Moron." he uttered.

Omar smiled at Namine and shrugged. "I don't really know. I guess...stay with me? I guess? It would be nice to have someone who I know and can sympathize while I'm in here. I hate being in the police station" Though he was in here so often he might as well call it a second home. "I don't want to be alone right now"

Pitch just offered a small chuckle at Vanitas words. However, he suddenly paused as he realized Aqua hadn't joined him yet in the interrogation. After all, she had taken Omar's side of the incident and would most likely want to compare Vanitas' account to it to try and find any inconsistencies. However, she hadn't come and Pitch had a feeling that something else was going on right now to keep her occupied.
With this in mind, Pitch suddenly rose from his seat across from the other demon and looked down at him for a moment, the amused expression still on his features despite his mind being elsewhere. Without a word, he turned on his heel and headed to the door, walking out of the interrogation room as it locked behind him and once more entering the holding block.
A man with the baring of someone who always gets what they want and wearing a suit that probably cost somewhere in the quadruple digits was speaking to Aqua, and the expression on his coworker's face told him all he needed to know about his man in a split second.
"Let me guess, you're Vanitas' lawyer here to collect him."

"Hey, you can't just leave me in here!" Vanitas protested though his cries landed on deaf ears since Pitch shut the door behind him.
Aqua's hands clenched around the paper, slightly wrinkling it in her grip. She let out a slow breath when Pitch stepped up behind her. She offered the paper to Pitch so he could see for himself what was on the paper. This was just one frustrating case. It seems like she had a string of bad cases, one after another. She couldn't get matching statements from anyone. People had been less than cooperative. Now they had this lawyer butting in and making things even more difficult. She looked up at the other officer, wearily. She was getting tired of cases like this. First the La Llorona killer and now this one? City hall had way too much power.
"It would seem, that city hall wants to keep Vanitas on the streets because he helps in high profile cases." Aqua said, fighting back the anger in her voice. "Regardless of how the events of tonight happened."
Namine's eyes widened in surprise. She wasn't sure what she expected in his request. She was used to being a little errand girl in the office. Go get the officers coffee, get donuts, draw the suspect, draw the victims, take this paperwork to filing or archives. It was slightly demeaning but it was work all the same. She nodded all the same and stepped closer to the bars. She let her hands relax.
"I'll stay," she said softly.

Omar smiled gratefully at Namine and reached out through the bars to grip her hand, if she'd let him. "Thank you so much" he told her, before looking past Namine to the little drama going on behind her. The smarmy gentleman was talking to the demon and the blue haired girl and it seemed really like bad news, judging from the looks on their faces. Omar gripped the bars with one hand. "Hey! can I leave now or what?" he called out loud enough to get their attentions.

Pitch listened to Aqua as she spoke while reading through the papers that Vanitas' lawyer had brought. It was clear from a glance that someone high up didn't like the idea of Vanitas being behind bars or charged with a crime and had worked the system in such a way so that he would get off scotch free while everything fell on Omar.
Speaking of the troll, he yelled into the silence and demanded to know when he could leave. Pitch leveled his gaze at the troll and, with the barest movement, shook his head. It was subtle and might be missed easily but the demon hoped Omar was smart enough to catch the warning. He needed to be silence while he dealt with this mess.
"Well, it seems as though this paperwork is all in order and that I and Detective Malone will be required to release Vanitas from our custody with no charges held."
He folded the papers meticulously in half in his pale hands, his golden eyes taking in every aspect of this lawyer. It was clear from one good look that this was the kind of man who was used to getting everything he wanted in a split second, that he liked to keep his schedule as neat and orderly as his suit and that little annoyances could easily ruffle him. With all this taken into account, Pitch smiled before handing the papers back to the slimy gentleman.
"Unfortunately, Vanitas will not be able to leave until we have taken his account down for our records. While no charges will be placed against him, we still need his testimony in dealing with the other party involved in the incident."
To anyone listening it might have sounded as if Pitch was selling out Omar for Vantias, but it was in fact the complete opposite.
"Vanitas is obviously distressed over this occurrence and hasn't been able to provide his account at this time, so he will need to remain here at the BPD until we are finished. It might take quite some time given his current emotional state. In fact, it might take the remainder of the night for him to calm enough for us to receive his testimony, but as his lawyer I'm sure you're willing to wait as long as it takes to see justice done."
Pitch paused, letting the rather stunned silence fill the space. It was clear the lawyer hadn't expected any resistance in retrieving Vanitas and now Pitch had caught him in his own loophole, holding onto the other demon for a length of time until he could cool his heels enough to say anything besides insults. And the likelihood of that happening anytime that night was slim.
"It simple is too bad that the charges against Omar weren't dropped. After all, if he wasn't being charged for assault by Vanitas then we wouldn't even need his account and you could leave with your client as of now. Oh well, I'm sure you don't mind waiting."
