Yang had to laugh at Sunshine's reaction to Shadow's question. The idea of her hating pumpkin-flavored things was almost sacrilegious. "I gotta get me some pumpkin pie before fall's over. After that, everyone's gonna start selling peppermint-flavored stuff." The two just naturally went together. Fall and pumpkin, winter and peppermint, it was practically tradition by now. However, the conversation soon changed to something a bit more serious: Shadow's memory problems. Yang remembered him mentioning something like that some time ago, but she didn't really know the details, or how much he had found out. He soon gave a brief overview of what he had uncovered so far. Yang listened intently, but his story was cut off by the dinging of a bell, signaling that their pizza was ready. The sound made Yang jump a little. She had been so engrossed in Shadow's story, she had practically ignored everything else that was going wrong. "I'll be right back," she said as she hurried to get the pizza. She was eager to hear the end of Shadow's story. By the way he was telling it though, she wasn't sure if it would have a happy ending.

Sunshine smiled with a bit of a weak laugh. Pumpkin in the fall, peppermint in the winter, and strawberry slash lemon in the summer. Those seemed to be the flavors she could never escape from. Poor spring had no distinct flavor profiles. "We have so many pie demands, it's not even funny. We're lucky if people want pecan or sweet potato, hell, even apple I've mastered. Then again, I have memorized so many pie recipes I can't count them with two hands."
"That's what toes are for." Shadow muttered.
Sunshine looked at her partner with an eye roll. Once that was done, she looked one hundred percent serious. "Shadow...something's up and you're not telling me. You had something bad to say."
The red and black cop sighed. Yang was off getting the pizza, and while he trusted her, he knew how protective she was. If anyone she cared about was in trouble, she'd fly in headfirst. He looked at the checkered tablecloth, finding it difficult to word it.
"I know who took my memories. It was Pitch."
Sunshine stifled her gasp. Pitch? What could Pitch want with Shadow's memories? Nothing good. The demon had good intents, but she never fully got behind him. "Who told you this?"
"It was more a show and tell." Shadow answered. "Before we were called to the Sapien assault, I...I followed a creature who knew my name. He led me to this...high security prison. He wanted me to unleash all those things in there. Instead, I chose to attack them. I looked up his signature..." he sighed heavily. Well, best tell the truth now. "...and now I'm connected to the devil. I mean legitimate devil. Destroyer of worlds, badder than Thrax....I don't want you getting hurt."

Yang had to smile at Sunshine's comment about pie recipes. But by the time she got back to the table with the pizza, both she and Shadow were looking pretty serious. She glanced back and forth between the two of them. Had she missed something while she had been away from the table? She decided not to worry about it for now. She was eager to hear Shadow finish talking about the memories he had regained. "Okay, so, back to where you were," she said, grabbing a slice of pizza and munching on it, almost like she was watching a thriller movie and was snacking away at some popcorn. "Maria was sending you down to Bellerouge. What happened after that?"

Sunshine just looked at Shadow with her eyes talking for her. What he was doing could get people hurt whether he liked it or not. A whiff of melted cheese and cooked meat caught her nose and Yang's voice brought her back. The pizza was right incro t her and Yang was digging in right away.
The pizza was delivered, and that meant Yang was back. As he served himself a slice, Shadow decided to continue. "...A guard came in...and he..." he looked down as the oily cheese ran into a puddle on his plate. "They shot her. She asked me to promise her something...that's where the memory stops."

Yang had a feeling that Shadow's story wasn't going to end happy, and it was confirmed when he said that Maria was shot. She swallowed her bite of pizza before saying "Jeez." Shadow had had it rough, and he hadn't even known about it until know. It was one thing to have bad memories and be sad about them, but to not have them entirely and be unaware of how they shaped you? Yang didn't know which one was worse, and she had plenty of bad memories to deal with. "Think you'll get the rest of your memories back?" she asked. "I mean, whatever promise you made, it was probably important."

Shadow took a bite with a thoughtful expression. He had gotten these memories for helping the devil. If he continued this, there would be a lot more trouble on the horizon for other people, not just him. "I'm not sure," he answered with a swallow. "Maria's the reason I became a cop; if she wanted me to help people, then I'm doing that."

"I guess," Yang replied. Shadow did have a point there. But she felt like it was important, to get all his memories back. They made up who he was, shouldn't he remember them, even if they were bad? "Well, at least you got a good chunk of them. That's better than nothing, right?" she said, trying to be optimistic. Shadow probably had a much better idea of who he was, now that some of his past had been recovered. That had to count for something.

Normally, Sunshine would have been the one to give Shadow that sense of optimism and good view of memory chunk. He had devoured his slice through this. Next to him, Sunshine had barely touched her Hawaiian. Only half of a dice had been devoured. As she washed a bite down, she was able to ask, "How's thev nestvdoung? You know, your kids?"

Yang wasn't sure if her hopeful attitude was rubbing off on Shadow and Sunshine, as the subject was switched to her kids instead. Hopefully, something good would come out of this mess that they were in. "Oh, the usual," she replied. "A little messing around every now and then, but they're still getting along." That seemed typical of kids. Sometimes fights would break out, like who got the last bite of ice cream or what story should be read before bedtime. But Yang's kids were as tightly knit as any family, which she appreciated. They were always the rock that kept her steady.

"They need a good mother figure in their lives," Sunshine replied. Her appetite had finally come to her, and she was ravenously attacking two slices of pizza at the same time. The sweetness of ham and pineapple was what she needed. A piece fell from her hand, and she grabbed it quickly.'
Shadow chuckled. "Nice reflexes. Maybe you should join the fighting rings."
"Me? Nah, I'd break my fist from one punch," Sunshine replied. "I'll stick to cheering on the sides and supplying in between snacks. You need carbs after all."
Shadow took a swig of his water. Finally Sunshine was acting more like herself. So, Hawaiian pizza and chocolate croissants were her cure for happiness. "We should meet your kids some time, let them know not all cops are bad."

Yang just gave a little shrug. Mother, father, she kind of had to fill in for both. But the last thing she wanted was to dominate her kids' lives. She always said that they could stay with her as long as they wanted. Some kids she took in were like that. They only stayed for a little while, then moved on. But the four she had right now seemed content to stay for a very long time, which Yang kind of appreciated. "We'll have to get you pom-poms or something. That'll complete the cheerleader look," she joked before munching on her pizza some more. It was delicious, just like every other pizza she had had at Tony's. It never let her down. Shadow suggested Yang introducing her kids to him and Sunshine in the future, and she liked the sound of that idea. "Don't worry, they know you're on the list of good cops around here," she said. While most police officers were a no-go, mainly because Yang didn't know them or they had tumbled with her in the past, there were some that she had told her kids they could trust. Sunshine and Shadow were on there, as well as Moses and Esmeralda.

Sunshine elbowed her partner with a playful smile. "You hear that, Shad? We're on somebody's good list." She slurped a thick strand of cheese like a spaghetti noodle, adding on, "that's a first." Ever since her time on the force, only a select few has really considered her a decent cop. She was always the baker of cookies, not so much the vampire slayer the others were. But she had made a vampire blow up just by stabbing it with a table knife, so there was that.
The only response Shadow could echo in a positive light was a grunt of agreement. The only remains of Tony's were bits of crust, puddles of grease, and a wrinkled mushroom that had fallen. He must not have realized how hungry he had been. "Yeah, but we're also not the basic Bellerouge Police."
"Nope. We kill monsters, protect the innocent, team up with a cat burglar who..Ow!" Sunshine winced as aight kick from Shadow cut her off. He may not have had his chaos powers, but he still had those jet skates, and they hurt when kicked directly.

"True," Yang admitted. The BPD were a whole other league. Although she had a feeling people considered it the unit where the "weirdos" went. It looked like they accepted all sorts. In another time, in another place, Yang might have wanted to join it. But dreams like that had been long gone for her. She didn't even consider it as a possibility now. However, her head shot up at the mention of a cat burglar. Yang blinked for a second. Not only had Chat jumped in on that Sapien business, he had also teamed up with the cops? That was an interesting development, in her opinion. Yeah, she knew that Chat was different from other burglars around here, like Odette, but the idea of him actually working with the BPD sounded too good to be true. She remembered lamenting to Chat how she wished the authorities could see that he stole for a good reason: to help others. Had Shadow and Sunshine see that? "A cat burglar?" she asked. "You mean...Chat Noir?" The thought of trying to be a little more inconspicuous about her interest in Chat's affairs didn't cross her mind. In truth, she knew very little about him. If she had a chance to get some more info on him, she was going to take it.

"Yeah, that's him," Shadow answered. "He has good intentions, so Sunshine and I have kept our mouths shut about him around the other cops. He lassoed us into looking into a scam. Of course, I was skeptical, so Chat and us made a deal; if every one of his claims were true, then he could return the stolen item we caught him with."
"And if you thought juggling a demon, gangs of Others, and now this drug ring were tough enough," Sunshine winced. She was grateful her partner had left out the part of him hitting on her. But that left a question. Did he hit on Yang, too?
"He also helped our unit during the assault," Shadow added. "If it weren't for him, we'd be history." That admittance was as reluctant to say as cutting off one's arm. Chat may have been a minor annoyance, but his assistance had been more than welcome at that turn of the tide. Besides, it didn't surprise him that Yang knew who he was.

Yang was relieved to hear that Shadow and Sunshine hadn't told any other cops about Chat. Sure, maybe some of them could be trusted, but Yang felt like if she was in Chat's position, she'd want to keep the number of officers she was involved with to the minimum. Not all of them were as understanding as Shadow and Sunshine, and some might try to turn Chat in, despite the good he was doing. "Yeah, he's like that," she said. "He always seems to show up when you need him to." Yang felt Chat had an uncanny ability for that. When she was needing some supplies, or just needed someone to talk, he showed up. Yang trusted him, even if she still kept things from him sometimes.
