Yang was quiet for a moment as she concentrated on the game. Sunshine was pretty decent, considering that she didn't look to be a hardcore-gamer. She finally asked "Any other interesting investigations going on?" she asked. Sunshine and Shadow probably couldn't give her too many details, since she wasn't on the force, but she figured she might as well ask. They did seem to like talking about the quirkier aspects of work.

Despite the confidentiality that was with most cases, the cops were eager to talk about their work without any strange looks. Yang was not only someone who understood this, being a half Phoenix, but both Shadow and Sunshine trusted her. For the more stoic cop to openly admit trustworthiness, it wasn't easy.
"Well, we had a couple of interesting cases. We were looking at a potential shapeshifter murderer in an old shaft," the male cop answered. "That, and a large crocodile man hanging out near the bayou."
"And several arson cases. It's the only time we get to help with the...non Other cases," Sunshine added. Arson was a hit-miss thing when it came to Others. Some were caused by irritable Others or gifted humans, others were caused by humans planning to set things on fire. Elsa has recently defended a cop who has been accused of being tied, but had no part in the buntings.

"Sounds like you guys have been busy," Yang said with a laugh. A crocodile man sounded like something that would pop up on a late-night TV special or something. Then again, when it came to the supernatural, anything was possible. There were all sorts hanging around this town. And when half-breeds got involved, that was something new entirely. Zombies and demons, mermaids and vampires, wizards and nymphs, there were quite a few combinations. "Let's hope the arson cases calm down a bit before Mardi Gras rolls around," she commented, "or things might get really crazy." Sure, Mardi Gras was still a few months away, but this was Louisiana. Mardi Gras was one of the prime holidays around here. Although Bellerouge was a little more tame compared to New Orleans.

"In the Others Unit, there's never a dull moment," Sunshine chuckled, "it's like Halloween all year round." Speaking of Halloween, the fighting stage had a major transfer when the characters knocked one so far off, they transferred to a stage that looked like an abandoned asylum. There were had been many a solved case by the Others Unit, and some had gone from the whodunit with a Gothic twist to fighting creatures out of horror movies to just absolutely absurd killings. She still didn't forget the killer clown mage who lived in the sewer.
"Ugh, Mardi Gras," Shadow shuddered. Apart from Halloween, that was one time of year where people got tangled with the Others Unit. Vampires could prowl, as could the occasional were, because the people were too drunk or in a rush for their own good.

Yang had to laugh at that. "Halloween all year round" was a pretty accurate way of describing Bellerouge in general. Who needed to dress up as vampires or mummies or zombies when you could see one every day walking down the street? Still, Yang's kids always attempted to dress up as something when the holiday rolled around, if only because a costume might up their chances of getting more candy. Sure, they might be more home-made than store-bought, but it was fun for them all the same. Shadow didn't seem too enthusiastic about Mardi Gras, which Yang could understand. Things could get a little crazy whenever everyone was throwing out beaded necklaces every two minutes and running around with drinks in their hands. Although, since it was a major holiday, a lot of the businesses tended to have sales, which Yang appreciated. Anytime she could score a deal, she considered it a good day.

The other two cops joined in with their takes on laughter. Shadow's laugh was more subdued and husky, a bit more of a sly chuckle. Sunshine's was the slightly louder, bubblier and, well, girlier, giggle. Now that the La Llorona Killer was off the streets, it meant that more kids could safely go out and go trick or treating. "The offer still stands for your kids to come by the complex, Yang," Shadow offered as he continued to watch the virtual fight. "Ever saince Jack moved out, it's kind of lonely,"
"Oh, he moved out?" Sunshine asked. "I did always like him...and...well...I'd be lying if I said I thought he was cute."
Shadow rolled his eyes. "Girls. Go fig." He picked up Sunshine's ticket hoard and began leafing through it. She must have had luck on her side, because the reams went on way beyond 500, whch eant she had enough to get a few big prizes, "so...what were you going to cash these in on?"
Sunshine shrugged, still tapping combos, "Well, I may get some candy, maybe a few things for Yang's kids...AHA!" Her green eyes widened in delight as the combo she struck did the biggest amount of damage she had seen thus far. That meant...the match was hers. Shadow had lost but she had won. Sort of an ironic twist.

"I think they'd like that," Yang said. The kids had had a ball at Jane's place. They'd probably like Shadow's as well, although some of them might be antsy about going into a cop's house. Yang might have to go with them the first few times, just to ease their worries. She wanted them to know that while most police officers should be avoided, Shadow was definitely one to be trusted. And Sunshine as well. Speaking of which, her friend managed to hit a winning combo, draining the last of Yang's character's health. "Oh, what the heck?" she griped. Maybe she had gotten too distracted by the conversation. Or maybe Sunshine had a hidden talent for gaming. Either way, it was enough for her to win. "Looks like I need to practice a little bit more," she said with a grin.

"Oh, come on, you beat 'the ultimate cop'" Sunshine emphasized her point with high exaggerated air quotes. People jokingly called Shadow 'the ultimate cop' because, from the surface, he was what most people saw in TV and movies; the tough, stoic, no-nonsense, can kick across the bar and splinter the stools damaging, kind of cop. Yes, he had all that power, but really, he only showed it if the situation called ofr it. Besides, he had his softer moments, too, "that alone is worth something."
Shadow sulked. But beneath his gruff reply, there was a hint of teasing. 'Not funny." He picked up the tickets, tossing them to the girls. "Well, while that catfight was entertaining, how about we get some goods for some well-earned tickets?"

Yang's grin broadened at that name. "Ultimate cop, huh?" she said. "Does that mean you're the bad cop when things get serious?" That was always the joke made in shows and movies. There was a good cop, and a bad cop. One who took things lightly, and then another one who was called in when things weren't so light-hearted anymore. Sunshine and Shadow did seem to fit that stereotype. Shadow soon changed the subject to getting some prizes though, and Yang was willing to oblige that much. Getting some goodies was the last step in cheering up her friends, after all.

Shadow chuckled. The good cop, bad cop thing was always something to come up in the offices. These ranged from actually comparing a duo to water cooler talk joking about cop stereotypes. "Depends on my mood."
The tickets were lazily dumped out in a tangled heap of paper. As they were counted and divvied, Sunshine was the prize picker. Feeling generous, her prize were jack o lantern bags that she filled with candy. She handed one to her partner, kept one for herself, and handed five to Yang. "One for you, and one for each of your kiddos. Now they have something to put their candy in."

Yang gave a smile as Sunshine picked out prizes with the tickets. She seemed to go the sweet-tooth route and filled jack o' lantern bags with candy. Although Yang was surprise when Sunshine handed five of them to her, one for each of her kids and herself. "Oh, you don't have to do that," she said. "This outing was for you guys." She liked gifts sure, but she felt like the whole point was to cheer Shadow and Sunshine up. Maybe buying people stuff made Sunshine happy sometimes.

Sunshine looked at Yang quizzically. The putting had been for them? It...actually touched her a bit. And to be fair, she did need something to lighten her up. The pizza and arcade did just that, "well consider these a thank you for getting us out of a rut."
Shadowcwas also looking at Yang quizzically. She had done so much for those kids, she needed something that she didn't to pay for to give them. He partially understood the guilt of accepting something generous without giving back something in return, but Yang had given them a day out of misery. Not even money could buy that. "I hate to admit it, but...slowing down and shooting shit is kind of fun."
"Let's not make a habit of it," Sunshine teased.

Yang gave a little shrug. She supposed she could accept that. Thank-you presents were fine in her book. "Well, tonight's certainly going to be sugar-filled once my kiddos dive into these," she said with a laugh. They could get pretty hyper after eating a bunch of candy, but Yang felt like she could do with some liveliness right now. It would perk her up a little bit.

"Just tell them Nevermore will have to wait. You don't need caffeine plus a sugar rush," Sunshine added with a cheeky smile of her own.
As the two girls were exchanging giggles, Shadow reclined against the counter. To see his partner slash friend actually talking with someone who he was considering close to a friend was actually perking her up a bit. That, and since he had told Yang the truth about his past, which he rarely did to anyone, it was even more of a hint that she was becomign a friend. It didn't matter if she lived on the streets, he'd be there for her. ((end thread))
