"This guy seriously hasn't even hinted?" Jane asked, somewhat surprised.
She would have thought a thief like him would have gloated his way into a jail cell, or talked himself up. Slipped and given a finger print? Something. If he was able to skate by so long without getting caught, it was a scary thought. What if someone else started doing what he did? But they were someone dangerous? Still... She would have thought he'd want to have at least one person who knew his little secret. Then again, a criminal gang just went after Yang to try to find out who he was.

"Well, he did talk a little bit about his daytime life," Yang admitted. "He said it was really lonely, and that it was pretty restrictive. He sounded like a bird trapped in a cage." Yang may not have known what class Chat was in, but she did know that when he wasn't cat burgarling, his life was pretty sad. He had sounded so depressed talking about it. Yang kind of wished she knew who he was just so she could help him. Then again, maybe he didn't want her around. She didn't know. It felt like her mind was going in circles when she thought about stuff like that.

To Jane that just sounded like an excuse, or rather a lie to make Yang feel sorry for him. Yang sincerely sounded sorry for him whereas Jane held no sympathy. But she had already put her foot in her mouth a few times during the entire conversation. She did promise to hold back reservations until she at least met the guy. She was going to keep her mouth shut on that matter to prevent further conflict of interest. She couldn't offer much in the means of insight on who this guy was after all.
"That's... not much to go on," she said softly. "Maybe your cop friends can get some better leads."

"Yeah. Although with this whole Sapien drug problem, I think Chat is the least of their worries," Yang said. And that was understandable, in her opinion. Making sure these people didn't stay human forever was a bigger priority than finding out the identity of some random cat burglar. Yang just hoped they could figure out what to do soon. People in this city were getting worried, fearful that they might loose their supernatural powers and end up human.

"Yeah," Jane breathed.
It would just be weird for her to just become human. The one thing her foster parents tried to make her when she wasn't. They tried to make her act 'lady-like' and dainty but she wasn't. She had too many of her natural instincts left from her parents and no one to guide her through that. It was a rough few years before she managed to leave them. She couldn't imagine just suddenly becoming human. She knew one thing for sure, she would be furious about it.
"How are they holding up?"

Yang shrugged. "Okay, I guess. I took Sunshine and Shadow to a pizza place and an arcade last week. They seemed a little perked up by the time I left, but I don't know how long that'll last." Sure, pizza and arcade games could cheer anybody up, but that was more like treating the symptoms and not the cause. It might cheer Sunshine and Shadow up, but it didn't change the fact that they were human, and the whole experience was probably baffling to them.

"Weren't they the two officers from the ball?" Jane asked.
The one who had carried Yang out after she got hurt and the one who had let Thrax get away. A pang of guilt struck the half troll girl. How many of Yang's friends did she not like? Apparently quite a few of them. She disliked two of them because they were cops and the other because of his lifestyle habits and his creepy manner of leaving 'gifts' for the younger girl. Granted, Jane herself only had Yang to count as a friend so it probably said something about the older woman's social levels too. She smiled a little sheepishly.
"And you didn't take the kids? I bet they were hurt." she teased.

Yang nodded. "Yeah. They were there." And she was glad they had been. Thrax had really taken a toll on her. If Shadow hadn't been there to help her out, or if Sunshine hadn't been there to heal her, she might have ended up with more than a few bumps and bruises. She gave a little laugh at Jane's teasing. "It was kind of a spur of the moment thing," she said. "Not much time for planning. But I like stuff like that. Sometimes, you just gotta spontaneously change plans and do something fun." Yang didn't mind unexpected things too much. If there was one thing she was good at, it was going with the flow. To an extent, at least.

It was probably one of the two officers she berated when she was there. Again a flash of guilt. Jane managed to keep it off her face though. She was good at pretending over things like that. But it made sense, Yang's impromptu plans to cheer up the two depressed officers. Jane herself had tried to find Yang and when she did, she dragged the other girl to the café so they could talk over their now cold coffees and sweets. But there was boy talk afoot. Of course the coffee would go cold in those situations.
"Guess you'll have to see if your cat boy will take you and the kids out to dinner," Jane couldn't help but say.

"That would be something," Yang agreed. Heck, she and Chat had even talked about introducing the kids to him in the future. It looked like he had wanted to meet them, seeing as how they were such a big part of her life. But it looked like that was off the table. "I don't know what I'd do though, if I saw him again. Half of me wants to punch him. The other half wants to hug him." Sure, she missed Chat a lot, but there was still that resentment towards him for ditching her in the first place. She knew it had been to protect her, but still. He hadn't given her any say in the matter. And losing him brought back old feelings of losing loved ones in the past. She didn't like that at all.

"Do both." Jane said dismissively. "Sounds like he deserves it. It's how my dad met my mom. He catcalled her. She punched him. Love at first fight."
Granted, her father was immortal and her mother wasn't. So even despite their love, it was already doomed to be tragic even with her mother and brother's murder. For all they knew, Yang's thief boy was the same. Maybe it was good the kids hadn't met him yet. They would have been just as crushed as Yang to know that he just walked out of their lives without a second thought. She had been upset with everyone after what happened to her when she was a kid. It was outside of anyone's control but she had been young and angry with the world.

Yang laughed. "That sounds like Omar all right." Still, if Omar and Jane's mom could start off on rocky territory and still love each other, maybe Yang and Chat could do the same. Maybe. It was hard for her to even begin to predict what might happen between them. Until she could find a way to get a hold of him, it looked like the two of them were going to stay apart.

"See? If an old grump like my dad can win someone over like that, then you could too." Jane teased.
Her father was a gruff sort of guy, but a romantic deep at heart. Deep deep at heart. She did worry about how Yang and Chat would turn out, but it wasn't her life. Yang was allowed to go and decide whoever she dated/saw. Jane smiled fondly. She couldn't stop Yang from making risky decisions like trusting a criminal. All she could do was give her advice, encourage her the best she could, depending on if things went good or bad, Jane would be there to help Yang. Someone had to be in her corner, even if Chat Noir wasn't.

Yang smiled. "Thanks Jane," she said. And she did mean it. She knew that Jane didn't totally approve of Chat, but at least she was willing to let Yang try and get in touch with him again. Yang knew she could depend on her if things got really bad. Hopefully, someday, Jane could find somebody to love too. Yang wanted to be there for that.

"Isn't that what friends are for?" Jane asked.
At the end of the day, that's what it boiled down to. Yang needed her to be a good friend. Really, Yang was Jane's only friend and she didn't want to lose that just because she didn't like some guy that Yang fancied. That was a stupid thing to throw out a friendship over. Besides, worst come to worst, Jane would set him straight. Yang would move on. There were after all better fish in the sea or in this case, she supposed, better cats on the streets.
