It took some negotiating. Yang was stubborn about Jane once again treating her to something, but it was obvious something was eating at the blonde when Jane got to the cafe. She put in an order for the both of them and told Mr. Seddon to keep the drinks and things coming because it would take some more time to get the details out of Yang. She smiled and gave the man her card so he could charge her after they left.
She cleared her throat before she joined Yang at the table. The blonde was distracted. She also looked like she hadn't had a solid night's sleep since the ball. Yang was lucky that Jane saw her first and not Omar. Her father had a protective streak about two miles wide. Yang happened to be one of the few humans that her father favored. Jane couldn't be happier that her father found Yang and that Yang had helped her father. She might not have realized it but by meeting Omar, Yang had given her father something more to focus on than his missing family. Yang also had someone she could trust and look out for her.
"Hey, Yang," Jane greeted. "Just put in our order. Hope you don't mind."

Yang was trying to be upbeat. She really was. But truthfully, she felt like her mind was getting overwhelmed by everything that had happened lately. She felt like her fight with Chat was being played on repeat in her head, no matter how much she tried to stop it, or at least pause it for a time. Thrax still lingered in the back of her mind, and she was growing worried that nobody had seen him since the ball. Where in the world could he be hiding? Then, there was Cinder, and her cronies. She kept assuring herself that she wouldn't come after her again, not when they were so scared of Pitch. But Yang still felt her stomach get nauseous any time she was near a body of water. She felt like she had been getting looks from Jane all day, and she was mad at herself for being so easy to read. It used to be easier, hiding what she was feeling. Then again, she didn't have as much to worry about before. Thoughts like these jumbled around in her head and it took her a moment to realize that Jane had spoken to her. "Hmm? Oh, that's fine. Thanks." She gave a smile.

Jane wasn't reassured by Yang's smile. It didn't quite reach the blonde's eyes. Jane felt horrible for not spending time with Yang as much after the Ball. She had just been working to make sure that everything was good between her and her father. She had even gotten to go through a few of her mother's old things. Her father kept quite a few things from her mother and brother. That had been an emotionally draining ordeal because she had never gotten to cope with her mother or brother's death, especially not with her father.
"Is... everything okay?" she asked. "You know you can tell me anything."
She bit her lip in worry. Yang had been quite all the way to the cafe. Normally she was happy and perky. She seemed to act that way but something was off. Jane couldn't make Yang talk if she didn't want to, but she did want to make sure that Yang was okay. The younger girl deserved a break after all she had been through.

"I'm okay. Just...stuff's been going on." It was a vague answer, but Yang wasn't sure how much she could say. If she talked about her and Chat's fight, it would involve mentioning what Cinder had done to her, and just thinking about the experience gave her goosebumps. Talking with Louie about it had helped, but it was still hard for her to shake off. She still couldn't over that, by pure coincidence, Cinder had chosen to kill her off using the thing she was afraid of most. Not to mention, the whole thing was making her parents pop into her head more often, which was never a good thing. Thinking about them still hurt.

"What's going on?" Jane asked. "Maybe I could help."
It was one of Yang's best and worst traits. She carried the weight of the world on her shoulders, a maturity that Jane hated seeing on others because it just proved that places like Bellarouge had no hearts for children. They would take children and eat them up, spitting out small bodied adults with young faces and eyes that were too wise. Yang and her kids were just fine examples of that. Jane just wanted to make sure they got the childhood she never got, at least to the best of her abilities. She certainly couldn't give the kids a mother figure when they had Yang, but she could at least pretend to play adoptive auntie. Even if Yang played foster mother, she was still young. She had troubles that no young woman should have. The least Jane could do was hear her out, try to talk her through whatever was bothering her.

Yang's hand clenched into a fist. Jane was reminding her of Chat. He had seen her bothered by something and had wanted to help her too. The result of that had been disastrous. His method of helping was to cut off all communication with her until Cinder was caught. "Last time I spouted my problems to someone, it didn't go over so well," she said. Common sense told her that Jane would never just abandon her by the wayside like Chat had, but it was still a new fear that Yang had.

"Did someone hurt you?" Jane asked.
That was Jane's utmost concern. If someone had, she would be breaking down someone's door and demanding apologies. Forget the fact she didn't quite have the record her father had, if someone hurt the blonde, Jane was likely to get herself arrested to make amends, even if it meant taking it out on whoever had hurt her. Trolls had a protective streak. It didn't just have to be a physical hurt. Yang's happiness was also something Jane was going to safeguard. She just looked so miserable it had to have been something big. Yang wasn't the type to let the little things bother her unless they piled up one after another until they made something big.
"Please, talk to me, Yang."

"No, no, nothing like that," Yang hurriedly assured Jane. Well, maybe that wasn't true. There was some emotional hurt going on. But Yang felt like she didn't want Jane getting all worked up about it. She gave a sigh. Maybe she could start off small, just give a little bit of information. If Jane took it okay, she could give out some of the not-so-nice details. If it looked like she was heading the same route as Chat, Yang would just end the conversation there. "Well...have you heard of a guy named Chat Noir?"

"Just what the papers write. He's a thief that-"
Jane paused. He was a thief who had been stealing from people all over the city, left and right his crimes were popping up. He took stuff of value. Jane didn't know where Yang lived. The blonde almost preferred it that way. Jane had to respect Yang's boundaries or her desire for the secrecy. But if some lowlife thief thought it was okay to steal from someone like Yang and her kids, then Jane was going to have problems with the guy. The papers wrote him off as some mysterious devil-may-care thrill seeker who was going to get his just deserts once the police caught up to him. If he had hurt Yang, Jane wanted him wearing the silver bracelets the officers would hand out.
"Did he steal something from you?" she asked in worry.

"No, no way, he'd never do something like that," Yang said, wanting to put that idea out of Jane's mind as fast as possible. "He's actually been...helping me get some stuff. He's not bad like the papers make him out to be, really. He's like a...modern Robin Hood." Yang felt like that was the best way to describe him. He stole from the rich to help those in need. What could be so wrong about that? At least, that was what she thought. "Anyway, we've been...hanging out a bit, and some bad guys noticed. Chat had stolen from them a while back, so they tried to get some information about him through me. Nothing...really bad happened. I mean, I'm still in one piece." Yang hoped she didn't sound too worried about that part. Any memories of getting tossed off the bridge and nearly drowning were quickly shut down. She couldn't start thinking about stuff like that now. "But Chat felt like it was his fault that I got tangled up with those guys in the first place. So...he wants to stay away from me until they're out of the picture." What worried Yang the most was that Chat had talked about going after Cinder himself. The thought of him getting hurt by her just because Yang couldn't keep her mouth shut scared her more than anything.

Jane raised a brow. A frown was deep set on her face. Yang was awful quick to defend the guy who had obviously hurt her. Almost like it was second nature to just defend him. However this Chat, leaving like that, with no explanation was selfish no matter what his choices for doing so were. Yang didn't talk much about the other people she knew. Naturally Jane worried she didn't have a lot of other friends. This guy had gone from friend to jerk in no time flat. He must have been 'some friend' if he could just drop Yang like that. The moment things got too tough for him to handle he bailed, leaving Yang to cope with the aftermath. Not exactly a real winner in Jane's book.
"Those people didn't hurt you did they?" Jane asked.
Yang's idea of 'not bad' and Jane's idea varied. She always tried to make as little fuss over something as possible. Like when they were shopping for dresses, or after the ball when she got hurt. She pretended like everything was okay, but really Yang was hurting. Just like how she was hurting over this no good thief who was only out for himself no matter who he stole the stuff for. Jane took a deep breath, tracing her thumb over the rim off a coffee cup.
"Yang, maybe it's better you don't see him. A guy like him is nothing but bad news."

"It was...it was nothing," Yang answered. Jane was already worried about her. Talking about exactly what Cinder had done would just make her more anxious. "I mean, I'm in fighting rings all the time. I'm used to stuff like that." Of course, that was a lie. Getting hit in the face or the stomach was one thing. Being tossed off the bridge had been something else entirely. She knew she would have been dead if Pitch hadn't shown up. When Jane suggested maybe it was best to stay away from Chat, her head shot up. How could she agree to such a thing? "No, I can't just forget about him," she protested. "You don't know what he's like. He's...different. He understands me, just like you do. He makes me feel...happier." It was difficult, trying to explain how she felt. How could she help Jane see that Chat was good to her? At least, he had been. "Jane, he was talking about going after those guys himself. And he was fine dying if that's what it took. Somebody who lives like that...they're not happy. He was lonely. I was his only friend. And now he's decided to just take everything on his shoulders. How can I let him do that?"

"That's the fight ring. Those people are criminals fighting criminals."
Jane sighed. Of course she'd brush it off. She didn't know why she had hoped Yang would do any differently. But Yang wouldn't open up. It hurt that Yang trusted this masked thug more than her, but she also could not make Yang talk if she did not want to. Yang wouldn't even name her attackers. Just referring to them as They or Them. Jane couldn't do anything to help. She doubted the police were capable enough to protect the young foster mother either.
Then there was the fact the guy made her feel 'special'. Guys were good at doing that. They knew how to get girls to swoon over their every word. Yang was young, the guy was at least attractive enough to flirt his way out of a few situations it seemed according to the papers. The few pictures had shown shaggy blonde hair and green eyes. Cute enough, Jane supposed. But he was a criminal. Despite whatever he was doing he was breaking the law and he didn't seem to care that innocent people like Yang had lives of their own to live. They would get stuck with the repercussions. The worst fear Jane had was that the guy left something valuable at Yang's place and the police would swoop in thinking she had taken it herself.
"Yang, sweetie, he's a guy in a mask. You can't trust him. Everything he said could have been lies." Jane insisted. "For all you know, he's working with the people who went after you."

"No way. He'd never do that," Yang protested. "Sunshine and Shadow have met him too. If he was a thug of any kind, he would have been arrested on the spot." Yang knew that Jane didn't put much faith in the BPD unit, but she knew she could trust Sunshine and Shadow. If Chat was part of some gang, they would have known. Heck, they even had some possible theories about who he might be. Of course, nothing could be proven yet, but it looked like to Yang that they were just as curious about Chat's true identity as she was. "If you could just meet him, you'd see," she said. "He flirts a lot, I'm not gonna lie. And he can get in way over his head sometimes. But...it's like he gets me, you know? He likes me for me. You two, and, like, maybe a handful of other people are the only ones who are like that." Sure, Yang had a lot of friends, but there were only a few that she really trusted. Those were the ones who knew she had done some shady things, who knew that she was living in an abandoned movie theater, who knew she had four kids under her wing. And they accepted her anyway. Jane was like that. So was Omar, and Sunshine, and Shadow. And Chat was too.

Jane wasn't convinced. The police weren't good at their jobs if demons and drugs were on the streets. She didn't put a grain of trust in anything they believed in. She just had to begrudgingly respect them for doing one of the most dangerous jobs out there. She didn't care who this guy thought he was, he was obviously a bad influence on Yang. What if her kids tried to take after him? They would get arrested in a heart beat. Yang would lose them to the system. She didn't want to have to pick up her best friend's heart after that. It would be too devastating.
"He lies for a living." Jane protested. "It's not like you're in love with the guy or anything! You don't need to protect him. He's not worth it. Trust me."
Jane just didn't want Yang giving her heart away to a guy who didn't deserve it. Least of all a criminal who was likely to get arrested an thrown in jail. Yang was too young for a jailbird for a lover. There was one of two ways Chat's fate was going to go. He was either going to get arrested or get killed. Either suicide by cops or by one of the other criminals he peeved off. It was not going to be a happily ever after for the two of them, no matter how much like 'Robin Hood' this Chat Noir fancied himself as.
"I just don't want you to get hurt."
